Oceana teen program teaches etiquette

STORY/PHOTO BY MC2 TONY ROSA From NAS Oceana Public Affairs NAS Oceana Child & Youth Programs (CYP) hosted an etiquette class and luncheon Aug. 25 and 26, as part of the teen summer program. The class and luncheon were facilitated by Paullette Diaz-Reed, a certified social etiquette and protocol trainer and former social and diplomatic ambassador in Senegal. “These kids really impressed me,” said Diaz-Reed.“We had only two days together and the students learned a plethora of information about proper dining etiquette, both continental and western styles.” Not only did the students learn about dining etiquette, but they also learned about proper greeting protocol, departure protocol and even the ins and outs of the proper handshake. “I think the most important thing for these kids, especially because they are military children and they may be overseas with their parents, is that they can now be in a foreign country and go sit at a dinner table with dignitaries and eat a meal and represent well,” said Mel Edwards, a recreation specialist at NAS Oceana CYP. As part of the teen summer program that CYP offers, the kids participate in several different theme weeks that provide students with much more than cooking skills and dinner etiquette. “This week was foodie week so the kids have been cooking all week long,
