NEX hosts Luke Bryan Country Music star Luke Bryan stopped at the NEX at Oceana to meet with fans and sign autographs before his concert May 17 at Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach. Bryan personally presented Navy spouse Jessica Dean two free tickets to his concert that she won in the drawing sponsored by the NEX. Helping present the tickets is NAS Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Bob Geis. Following photos and autographs with military fans, Bryan also made time to meet with wounded warriors from Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, before heading to his concert.

BY KAREN PARRISH American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Sexual assault in the military is a crime and a problem that all military members at all levels will have to fight together, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said May 17. “This is going to take all of us,” Hagel said during a joint Pentagon news conference with Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff. Hagel noted he and Dempsey, along with the service secretaries and chiefs of staff, attended an “important, productive”White House meeting May 16 with President Barack Obama to address the situation, which Dempsey has termed a “crisis.” The meeting was important, Hagel said, because “It gave the president an opportunity to ask questions directly, and get the sense of this huge problem, serious problem in our military.” — See Preventing sexual assault Page 13
Rewarding Sailors for responsible choices — KWYE Campaign coming to NAS Oceana with an event today May 23 BY MC1(SW/AW) MOLLY A. BURGESS The Flagship On April 1, a year-round campaign was implemented throughout the Navy as part of an ongoing initiative designed to encourage Sailors to make smart choices and help them to keep what they have successfully earned during their naval career. The “Keep What You’ve Earned” (KWYE) campaign is a continuing effort to encourage responsible drinking habits by focusing on achievements through recognition for dedication and hard work in hopes that Sailors will realize how much they can lose if they make poor choices in regards to alcohol. According to Fleet Master Chief April D. Beldo, Manpower Personnel Training and Education, although the rates of Navy alcohol-related incidents (ARI) and driving under the influence (DUI) have decreased,one incident is too many. “This campaign is updated to reach out in a personal way to all Sailors, particularly those under 25, who have had 60 percent of the alcohol-related incidents,” said Beldo.“Over the last five years, the number of ARIs has been reduced by almost half.
