MILITARY SPOUSES HONORED AT HEROES AT HOME LUNCHEON BY MC1 (SW/AW) MOLLY A. BURGESS The Flagship The Hampton Roads community and The Flagship, Inc. celebrated the 10th annual Heroes at Home: Military Spouse Awards, May 8, at the Founder’s Inn in Virginia Beach. “Our military spouses have long gone unrecognized for everything they do behind the scenes in support of our armed services,” said Adair Wells, sales development manager and founder of the event.“This regional event rec-

ognizes spouses from all branches for their strength, extraordinary personal sacrifices, their support of other military families and their commitment to our Hampton Roads community. These spouses go above and beyond on a daily basis.” In 2005, The Flagship and Military Newspapers of Virginia (publisher of the Jet Observer), launched Heroes at Home: Military Spouse Award, which gave military and civilian communities in Hampton Roads an opportunity to say “thank you” and to recognize

military spouses for the challenges they overcome every day.The event is held in conjunction with the national Military Spouse Appreciation Day, celebrated each May, and is the only regional event in the country that honors military spouses from all branches of the armed services. A judges’ committee consisting of members of the Hampton Roads business community, as well as the armed services, reviewed more than 100 nomination packages and selected 10 finalists, one of whom was chosen as the overall winner based on the following criteria: exceptional volunteer work accomplishments, fortitude during lengthy deployments and separation, and support for our military spouses and their families.
