SERVING NAVAL AIR STATION OCEANA, DAM NECK ANNEX, AND NALF FENTRESS DENIM DAY HM2 Patricia Baker, a coordinator of the event, was among the many personnel at NAS Oceana who participated in the 2nd annual Denim Day Walk, April 23, which takes a stand against sexual assault and violence. Everyone was encouraged to wear denim jeans and red shirts and participate throughout the day in the walk from the Aviation Historical Park to the chapel. National Denim Day was initiated as a response to a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. Wearing jeans on Denim Day and supporting events on this day has become a symbol of protest against destructive attitudes, not only about sexual assault, but violence against women.

All hands turn out for Clean the Base Day BY CATHY HEIMER Jet Observer The Clean the Base Day at NAS Oceana and Dam Neck Annex, April 28, was an all-hands effort as everyone from commanding officers to the most junior airmen and seamen took a break from their normal routine to do a little spring cleaning across both bases. The event was coordinated by NAS Oceana Executive Officer Capt. Louis Schager. With a

limited number of Sailors in the Oceana 1st Lieutenant and attached to Oceana, he said squadron and tenant command participation was the key to getting the cleanup accomplished. “It’s a great opportunity for the whole Oceana–Dam Neck Annex team to get out … We had a great turnout, of all the tenants, both at Oceana and Dam Neck. It was great to see. We picked up a lot of areas, we spruced up a lot of areas,” said Schager.“It worked well and

I was very happy.” “I think everyone has a lot of pride in Oceana … This is an opportunity for all the squadrons, tenant commands to demonstrate that pride,” said Schager. All he had to do was get the word out and commands were eager to assist, which “goes to the mettle and level of cooperation we get here,” Schager explained. Because of Oceana’s flightline and the hundreds of aircraft that use the runways annually, the cleanup also was important in preventing foreign object debris (FOD) from damaging aircraft.“As we approach hurricane season, all of these attention-to-detail things during the year really pay off,” he said. Schager also said the cleanup provided an opportunity for commands to actually take a — See Cleanup, page 9
