Bishop visits Oceana during Holy Week

BY MC3 KAYLA KING NAS Oceana Public Affairs Bishop Robert Coyle, the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese for Military Services (AMS), visited NAS Oceana April 2 during Holy Week. During his time on base, Coyle met with Oceana Commanding Officer Capt. Louis Schager and Father Joseph Tran, a Roman Catholic priest for Oceana, to celebrate Holy Week at Oceana’s Chapel of the Good Shepherd. Coyle was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1988 and served 24 and 1/2 years on active and reserve duty before his retirement from the Naval Reserve in 2013. He continues to minister to Sailors around the world as a auxiliary bishop of the AMS. “Tonight is very special. We gather at the Lord’s table and recall what the Lord instituted tonight … the Holy Ghost and the Passover meal that he shared with his family,” said Coyle. During his visit, Coyle conducted the ritual washing of the feet during Mass. In the Roman Catholic Church, the ritual celebrates in a special way the Last Supper of Jesus, before which he washed the feet of his 12 apostles. “He seems to come here twice a year to come to teach and read the Passover to active Sailors, Marines, Air Force. He comes out to visit to maintain the presence of the church,” said Tran. AMS is the only Catholic jurisdiction responsible for endorsing and granting faculties for priests to serve as chaplains in the U.S. military. Tran said the bishop’s visit and

RED SEA (NNS) -- The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) arrived in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations (AOO) following a routine transit of the Suez Canal, April 6. While in the U.S. 5th Fleet AOO, TRCSG will provide a range of flexible and adaptable capabilities in order to conduct theater security cooperation efforts, maritime security operations and provide crisis response. Commanded by Rear Adm. Andrew Lewis, TRCSG is composed of the flagship aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Strike Group 12, Carrier Air Wing 1, Destroyer

Squadron 2 staff, the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) and the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Farragut (DDG 90) and USS Forrest Sherman (DDG 98). “The mission of the carrier strike group includes all maritime missions, from maritime security operations, strike warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare,” said Lewis. “These capabilities provided by the carrier, its air wing, the cruiser and destroyers within the strike group ensure the United States has the ability to support regional and coalition partners to meet operational requirements.”
