The armed forces have played a pivotal role in Hampton Roads, a nautical term meaning protected anchorage or safe harbor, since the English set foot here in 1607. The Soldiers who accompanied the first settlers are the predecessors of the thousands of men and women who have donned uniforms to protect the U.S. The region is proud to house bases associated with each branch of the military, including: Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Monroe, Coast Guard Station Portsmouth and numerous Navy bases – including Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana, Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story. With so much presence in the area, the Navy is the heart of the region. With more than 95,000 uniformed men and women currently stationed here, the Navy has had undeniable impact on the region’s history, economy and culture. More than 300,000 residents are part of the Navy family, plus an overwhelming number of retired or separated Sailors who choose to remain here. With a list of Navy resources, childcare options, community information, and a recently added section on local public school programs, this special section is intended to help make the transition to Hampton Roads a little easier and a little more enjoyable while getting to know the Navy and civilian communities! NORFOLK INTERNATIONAL Norfolk International Airport provides an information booth from 8 a.m. - 10:30 p.m., seven days a week. Uniformed personnel have information about Hampton Roads bases, transportation and telephone numbers for duty offices, ombudsmen and emergency assistance. PERSONNEL SUPPORT ACTIVITY The Personnel Support Activity located on Naval Station Norfolk provides one-stop service to personnel reporting to or departing from commands in this area. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE
STRESS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS
FFSC offers one-on-one consultation from experienced relocation counselors – including extensive information and referral services. FFSC provides information about housing, child care, schools and local resources, including Welcome Aboard packets and information about bases worldwide. For those with household goods in transit, the FFSC Lending Locker offers short-term loans of basic furniture and kitchen items, such as air mattresses, cribs, strollers, kitchen utensils, folding tables and chairs. There are a variety of workshops offered by each office, including Welcome to Hampton Roads. FFSC can also help foreign-born spouses acclimate to the area and provide audio and video language tapes. FFSC offers stress management workshops for active duty or family members, as well as programs to help reduce the stress of deployments and parenting.

PARENTING WORKSHOPS Learn and grow with strategies from today’s leading experts in childrearing. The centers’ parenting workshops make expert advice easily available. Parenting workshops include Parenting in a Military Family, Dads and Discipline, Enhancing Stepfamilies, Single Parenting in the Military and others.
TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Transition Goals, Plans, Success is a five-day course that covers resume writing, interviewing skills, salary negotiations, military benefits and many other topics to help smooth the transition from military to civilian life. For service members who are still unsure about separation or retirement, FFSC offers Career Options Navy Skills and Evaluation Program.
EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM Identifying resources to meet the special needs of family members can be overwhelming while moving. Special needs consist of ongoing requirements for medical treatment, psychological services or special education. FFSC can assist families with the Exceptional Family Member Program enrollment process and find suitable resources for care and information.
SPONSOR TRAINING This single-session training teaches command personnel to serve as sponsors. Topics include ways to be an effective sponsor, duties and responsibilities, military and community sources and FFSC relocation assistance. NAVY LODGES Hampton Roads offers three convenient Navy Lodge locations: Naval Station Norfolk, JEB Little Creek and Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic, Dam Neck. The Norfolk Lodge provides 292 rooms, including eight suites; Little Creek offers 100 rooms; and Dam Neck offers 50 rooms. These modern, comfortable rooms provide more conveniences to their guests than one might expect from a commercial chain of hotels. Cribs are available upon request, as well as irons and ironing boards. Personnel can make reservations anytime in advance. Orders must be presented at check-in along with a valid military identiďŹ cation. Reservations are held up to 6 p.m. without deposit. Check-in time is 3 p.m., but early arrivals will be accommodated according to room availability. Due to base restrictions, not all Navy Lodges are pet friendly. counselors qualify members for PPV Housing. Housing counselors will process housing applications for referral to PPV housing. Lincoln Military Housing is the housing partner who managers the PPV homes. Members are also counseled on lease agreements, sales contracts, tenant and landlord issues and other housing concerns. Service members can rent apartments, condominiums, town homes and houses through the Rental Partnership Program (RPP). Properties extend from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg. The RPP provides affordable housing at a discounted rate. Military members agree to a one-year lease and pay rent by allotment. Details are available at the Navy Housing Welcome Center. The Navy Housing Welcome Center maintains a large data base of community rental and sales listings to suit every need. Services are customized to assist in locating living accommodations and to familiarize customers with the Hampton Roads area. It provides home buying, selling and property management workshops each month. The instructors are Realty specialists who provide information about the home buying process, how to determine the sales price, selecting a real estate agent and real estate closing details. Housing information for outbound families is available in the departure library. Plan for your new duty station by visiting the Navy Housing Welcome Center where you can access information on all military bases worldwide. PENINSULA – The portion of Hampton Roads bounded by the James River, York River, Hampton Roads Bay and Chesapeake Bay. This includes the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Yorktown, Poquoson and Williamsburg. SOUTHSIDE – Located in the southeastern part of Hampton Roads and includes the cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk. HRBT – Abbreviation for the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel which connects Hampton and Norfolk through a 3.5-mile long crossing for I-64 and U.S. Route 60. MMMBT – Abbreviation for the MonitorMerrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel which connects Newport News and Suffolk through a 4.6 mile long crossing for I-664.
THE TIDE – Light rail system in Norfolk that runs from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center complex to Newtown Road at the border with Virginia Beach. SEVEN CITIES – Slang for the seven independent cities that make up Hampton Roads. They are: Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Suffolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach. TIDEWATER – Along with being an older slang term for the Hampton Roads region, “tidewater” refers to the fact that water levels in the area are affected by tides. BRIDGE TUNNEL/BAY BRIDGE TUNNEL – Slang for the Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel, a 23-mile fixed link crossing at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay that connects the Delmarva Peninsula with Virginia Beach.
CHESAPEAKE ne of the newest cities in Hampton Roads, Chesapeake was formed in 1963 by a political consolidation of the City of South Norfolk with the former Norfolk County, which dated to 1691. Beginning in the late 1980s and accelerating in the 1990s, Chesapeake saw significant growth, attracting numerous industries and businesses to its borders.

Today, the business community includes more than 80 foreign-based companies from 19 different countries. This economic development and the attractive residential properties have created a population boom.
Chesapeake has grown from 78,000 at its inception to an estimated 222,209 in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Chesapeake has been nationally recognized by outlets from USA Today to WalletHub as a model city. The city has been named one of the top 100 cities for millenials, one the top 50 cities in which to live, one of the safest cities in America and the 2014 Small Business Community of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. beautiful parks, lakes and rivers. The city has more miles of deepwater canals than any other in the country. The Dismal Swamp Canal runs through Chesapeake as well. It is the oldest continuously used man-made canal in the United States today and has been in service for over 230 years. Chesapeake is home to Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress, a Navy facility under Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.

NEWPORT NEWS ewport News, formally organized in 1896, is named for Christopher Newport, captain of the Susan Constant, the lead ship of the three-ship fleet that carried the Jamestown settlers to the New World in 1607. Since the turn of the 19th century, Newport News has been known as the provider of the nation's military ships thanks to the Newport News Shipyard. Now known as Northrop

Grumman Newport News, the shipyard, chartered in 1886, has built aircraft carriers for the Navy since the 1930s, including the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise (CVN 65), and is today the sole builder of the Navy’s carriers. The city has a wide array of activities for people of all ages. History buffs can stroll through Civil War battlefields and 1862 Peninsula Campaign sites or peruse the exhibits at The Mariner’s Museum, which records 3,000 years of maritime history. Children of all ages love the Virginia Living Museum where exhibits depict Virginia’s natural heritage from the mountains to the sea and introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia. The city also boasts more than 20 public parks, as well as public boat ramps and recreation facilities.

stablished in 1624, Norfolk was the colony’s most prosperous town by 1775. The city’s port facilities and waterfront made it an important military town as well. By 1917, as the U.S. built up to enter WWI, Naval Air Station Hampton Roads had been constructed. Now home to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest Navy base in the world, it is impossible to miss the imprint of the Navy at work and at play.

PORTSMOUTH ortsmouth was founded in 1752 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on behalf of Col. William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner, who dedicated the four corners of High and Court Streets for a church, a market, a courthouse and a jail. Today, Portsmouth is much more than that.

Residents and visitors alike can amble along the famous Seawall and take in the annual art show. Children of all ages can stand inside a giant soap bubble at the largest children’s museum in the state, The Children’s Museum of Virginia. Sports enthusiasts will love the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
