BY KIARA DAVIS Seizing an opportunity to recognize the tireless efforts of military spouses in Hampton Roads, The Flagship and Military Newspapers of Virginia founded Heroes at Home in 2005. Now in its 13TH year, the annual award celebrates the people who hold down the homefront while making an impact on the community. The Heroes at Home Military Spouse of the Year is chosen from a large group of nominees provided by active duty personnel from all branches of the military, spouse support groups, charitable organizations, friends and family. Many of our nominees and honorees throughout the years have been entrepreneurs or work full-time jobs while going above and beyond the call of duty. Some have developed organizations to help the needy, such as Jennifer Coble’s One Corner at a Time; or volunteer through church groups, like Erin Owens, who helps homeless teenagers in the area. Others have gone on to write military children’s books. They face hardships and challenges – all while keeping a smile on their face. At the age of 24, Sierra Branum was diagnosed with a medical condition that required two brain surgeries. While being hospitalized from brain surgery complications, she accepted her first role as an FRG President with the USS Shreveport, an Austin-class American amphibious transport dock. Military spouses never give up and always rise to the occasion no matter the obstacles they face. We often find them in plain sight, pouring their hearts into the community. They are special people who reflect the nation’s compassion, selflessness, and patience. They radiate strength, courage, and resilience and we are proud to honor them at the 2019 Heroes at Home Military Spouse Awards.

ierra has been a military spouse for 18 years and has dedicated herself to helping other military spouses thrive in the difficult circumstances of military life. Sierra first started her volunteer work by becoming the FRG president for the USS Shreveport in 2004 while being hospitalized from complications from brain surgery. From there she served as the USS Barry FRG president from 2012 to 2015 and now is currently serving as the family ombudsman for the USS Ramage. In 2012 Sierra started volunteering for Compass Norfolk where she taught Navy spouses how to understand, experience, and meet the challenges of the military lifestyle. In 2015 Sierra became the team lead for Compass Norfolk where she now coordinates all classes, curriculum, and enlists new mentors. Since her start as team lead, Compass has mentored over 400 military spouses. Aside from her volunteer work for the military community, she has volunteered has an awards coordinator for Cub Scouts, fundraiser committee for her son’s baseball team and currently serving as team mom for her son’s high school basketball team. She serves on the director’s board for Ruff Road Pet Rescue where they have saved over 560 animals. She collects Christmas cards every year to send to deployed sailors and their families. Sierra not only volunteers her time but also encourages her family to volunteer feeding the homeless, gathering essentials for non-charitable organizations, and assisting during adoption events for Ruff Road Pet Rescue. FUN FACTS ABOUT SIERRA: When I was 24, I was diagnosed with a medical condition that required me to have two brain surgeries and a VP Shunt placed. Most people are shocked when they find out because I am always on the go and never give up. When I accepted my first role as an FRG President I was in a hospital bed due to post-surgical complications. I love to be outdoors! I could camp year-round if the weather would allow and of course my family. I am a spontaneous person. On an outing with other military spouses, we randomly found a creek in the mountains and worked our way down to the creek to go wade in the water just because it looked so peaceful and fun!

ennifer is always putting others ahead of herself. When it comes to her family, she makes sure to be involved in her husband’s world by serving as one of the Ombudsman for the USS Bataan, she volunteers her time as a mentor for the New Military Spouse Network (MSAN), and she is certified in the SAPR and Suicide prevention programs for military personnel. Jennifer aided in assisting her neighbor to find the strength and come forward when it came to reporting getting raped. She spent countless nights holding her friend, distracting her, watching her children and losing sleep. Jennifer suffers from debilitating PTSD with severe short term memory loss, social anxiety and fibromyalgia. She feels that her experiences in her life give her the ability to help others, that’s how she helps herself. Jennifer is a two time Base military spouse of the year in Pensacola FL for her efforts in creating a non-profit that aided in placing homeless veteran’s in finding jobs, making and selling products to raise money, feeding and clothing for a week and protection from spousal and or judicial abuse. Jennifer is currently working on creating a young military advocacy network which allows current children of military personnel whom are PCSing, to have contact with other students in the same area, a friend, knowledge about schools, activities, programs and someone to walk into school the first day with ease. FUN FACTS ABOUT JENNIFER: I have been married to my husband for 15 years and we focus on our Grandparents marriages to guide us through tough times (military families who are still married). I am obsessed with horror movies! I challenge these movies to actually try to scare me and if it does I will email the production company with a GOOD JOB!!! I have a degree in Behavioral Psychology. I wrote my dissertation about my teenage son and pathological lying, which took me a year, and I didn’t tell him about it until he moved out.

FUN FACTS ABOUT MARY: I grew up in a dual military family and until I married my husband I had never left the Hampton Roads area. I have a Masters in Human Services with a specialization in Social and Community Services. I am living out my dream job at Fleet and Family Support Center as a Deployment Specialist. I love running and hanging out with my friends. I am a neat freak and having kids does not always make that easy.

ary has been an outstanding military spouse and mentor for seven years. During the last seven years, she has volunteered as the command Ombudsman for three commands, to include Echelon 3 and 2 commands! Her determination as an Ombudsman can be seen through her nomination as Ombudsman of the Year for MPT&E! Mary also volunteered to lead Blue Angel Elementary Parent Teacher Association. Her time as PTA President, she ensured Blue Angel Elementary was a cohesive unit between parents and teachers. Also, Mary coordinated with BAE Military School Liaison to construct an area for military children to video chat military parents while deployed! After arriving in Norfolk, Mary saw the need to establish USS Gettysburg’s Family Readiness Group. Not only has she built a board of members, she has updated the by-laws, bank accounts, and online presence to ensure families are well connected with their Sailors. To continue her commitment to military families, Mary was recently hired by Fleet and Family Support Center to be a Deployment Specialist. As a Deployment Specialist, she will prepare military families for the hardships of upcoming deployments. Also, she will fly to ships returning from deployments to assist Sailors with their transition back home.

USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) transited the Elizabeth River and entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Nov. 5 to begin its carrier incremental availability.
Capt. Bob Roth, Truman’s commanding officer, expressed the pride he has in the work Truman Sailors completed while preparing to begin the maintenance availability at NNSY. “I’m very pleased with our preparations and am confident we will meet any challenges that lay ahead with utmost determination and professionalism,” said Roth. “This crew’s dedication and
passion to serve is incredible. We will continue with the spirit of ownership that led to our success on deployment and know that it will ensure our success here at NNSY.” The transition to NNSY will be a stark change in working and living environments for Truman Sailors, many

U.S. Navy and Mexican Sailors conducted a maritime interdiction operation (MIO) during exercise Bold Alligator 2014 (BA 14), an amphibious exercise consisting of 19 coalition partners performing crisis response operations, Oct. 31. Mexican sailors from the Armada Republic of Mexico (ARM) Baja California (PO-162); a patrol vessel that normally conducts drug enforcement countermeasures, MIO and
visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) operations in and around the coast of Mexico; boarded U.S. training vessel USNS Apache (T-ATF 172). MIO provides the capability to deter activities that impede freedom of the seas to include piracy and the illegal transport of people and goods. Methods of deterrence include distraction, delay and detainment. MIO also provides aide to legitimate mariners in distress. “The goal is to come on board safely, check the ship’s documentation and check the health and well being of the crew and vessel,” said Cmdr. Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician(AW/SW/EXW/IDW) Carl M. Thompson of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington’s Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department could not have even dreamed that he would receive an award for simply living his life. But that is what happened when he was nominated and then selected to receive the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award. This prestigious award was established by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Foundation in 2013 and is intended to recognize one active Major League Baseball (MLB) player, one National Baseball Hall of Fame (NBHOF) member and one chief petty officer in the Navy to represent three critical areas of Feller’s life: his MLB career, his enshrinement in the NBHOF and his service in the Navy as a chief petty officer. “This is a tremendous honor and such a humbling experience,” said Thompson. “I am overwhelmed and extremely excited at the same time. I am extremely grateful for all the teachers, mentors and community leaders who I have learned from.” Recipients are chosen based on their professional performance, community leadership through volunteer service, and living the Navy core values of honor, courage and commitment. “Throughout my career, I have volunteered my time and services to the communities I have been part of,” said Thompson. “I’ve always tried to make myself and those around me better, personally and professionally, to strengthen not only each individual Sailor, but the command and the Navy as a whole. It’s pretty amazing how even little actions can make a positive impacts in people’s lives.”

A growing concern of long deployments and the impact on families was a common topic. “I know that long deployments are a concern for many of you,” said Moran. “As long as we have commitments in the Middle East and around the world, coupled with a backlog of ship maintenance, we will have eight or nine month deployments, but we’re making real progress on shortening them. As we catch up on the maintenance we should see most ships return to traditional deployment lengths in the next year or so.”

arai has been supporting the military and military families longer than the 9 years we have been married. She has held the home front together for our family of 9 enduring lengthy deployments, a 21-month independent tour in Cuba, a 15-month independent tour to Bahrain, multiple Ship Availabilities and 36-month PCS to Guam aboard the USS Frank Cable AS-40, as well as recently PCSing to USS Whidbey Island LSD 41 and our current duty station the USS Gerald R. Ford CVN 78, in Norfolk, VA. Throughout 2018 she has served as a mentor for Military Spouse Advocacy Network where she currently guides 4 military spouses out of state, assisting them with their PCS’s while encouraging them to be active in their communities. In 2018 as a COMPASS Mentor she facilitated multiple courses to assist local spouses in acquiring the tools to pilot a successful Naval Career for their sponsor and family. She represented the Hampton Roads C.O.R.E as an ambassador for newly Selected Chief spouses mentoring and helping navigate them through season. Sarai also was voted by her peers as the VP for the Hampton Roads Chief Spouse Association, an accolade I know she was excited and humble to receive. Sarai served as an FRG President and Vice President for the USS Frank Cable AS-40. She has represented 3 bases over the last four years as a Compass mentor. Active Volunteer at the USO in Guam.
She received the Presidential Volunteer Award in 2012 for coordinating and assisting numerous volunteer activities to include being a key player in raising over a quarter of a million dollars over a three-year period providing Christmas gifts and food to Military families through Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton Adopt-a-Snow person program. She organized Marine and Navy Care package drives; during Operation Enduring Freedom as well bringing organizations together to support expecting military spouses. FUN FACTS ABOUT SARAI: Somehow, I have found a way to spend the last 12 years of my free time volunteering in support of the military and military families, I don’t have a bone on my left index finger, it is cartilage, and I was also diagnosed with skin cancer when I was 18 years old.

mily volunteered as USS GONZALEZ (DDG-66) Command Ombudsman and assisted countless families on September 11, 2001, as news broke of the attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania and, Washington, DC. Emily also served as the Family Readiness Group President for the USS NORMANDY (CG-60) and worked to bring families together to successfully face the challenges of deployment. Emily held the positions of PTA Vice-President and President at the local level and, then held the position of Principles of American Citizenship Chairman and Recording Secretary with Virginia Beach Council of PTAs. She also volunteered as PTA President at the middle school level and, was preparing to accept the nomination for VBPTAs President but declined the nomination due to illness. At the conclusion of her volunteer service with Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Emily had given 10 consecutive years of her time as a parent volunteer. Emily became active with CORE of Hampton Roads and, quickly became involved with social media on behalf of the group. She was thrilled to learn of the annual CPO Selectee Spouse Conference and delights in being able to help with the annual event. Her work with CORE continues today. Shortly after starting her work with CORE of Hampton Roads, she began volunteering with for Naval Services Family Line at the Washington Navy Yard. In 2018, she assisted with the revision of the Guidelines booklet, “Guidelines for the Spouses of Chief Petty Officers”. Working with spouses
Go Navy! Beat Army!” stationed all over the world, Emily collected suggestions, images, feedback, quotes and, provided countless edits in an effort to update the outdated booklet. In the Spring of 2018, Emily became actively involved with the Hampton Roads Chief Petty Officer Spouse Association as Charities and Fundraising Chairman. Overseeing two largescale fundraisers on behalf of the newly formed group, Emily was able to help raise much needed funding for the association’s efforts within the local area. In the summer of 2018, Emily began her own business, Seaport Sweetheart. She now donates 10% of all sales to Wreaths Across America to help purchase fresh wreaths to help cover local Veteran cemeteries in Hampton Roads. She also created a Facebook group for CPO Selectee spouses in Hampton Roads and, with the help of two additional Chief’s spouses, offered aroundthe-clock support and advice. The group grew to over 200 local spouses. The group was of no affiliation with any command or organization but is representative of Emily’s desire to help. rin has served as the Command Team Advisor for US Marine Corps Forces Command. In this capacity, she has acted as lead volunteer for the command Family Readiness Program. With Command permission, she established a unit spousal Facebook page for all Marine Corps units in the Hampton Roads area, which has become the go to place for spouses looking for advice during deployments, a solid resource for inbound families, and meeting place for more seasoned families to help our junior families that hesitate to approach the Command directly. She monitors the page daily to direct issues, provide helpful links, and add to members to grow the effectiveness of the page. Erin has become an irreplaceable resource for the families of MARFORCOM. Erin spends countless hours at night and on weekends connecting wives, mothers, fathers, and even a grandmother to resources to help Marines and their families in times of financial and emotional distress. Whether she was setting up meal sign-ups for families in need or visiting sick family members, Erin reaches out to support the command family when life is rough. In addition, Erin has volunteered to lead the unit family outreach effort. Quarterly, Erin plans and helps execute 2 different events. The first event is family centered, i.e. cookout, trunk or treat, etc. These events have grown dramatically over the past two years and have served as a great place to build unit cohesion and community spirit for a unit with Marines spread out across the Hampton Roads area. The second quarterly event focuses on the single Marines of the Command. Erin has coordinated numerous barracks cookouts/ dinners to ensure younger Marines feel supported and loved by the families of the units. Finally, Erin has been the voice of the families to the command by serving on the command family readiness team. She takes the concerns of the families to both the Commander, MARFORCOM, Lt Gen Mark Brilakis and Commanding Officer, H&S Bn, Col Thomas Campbell. She been able to use this forum to make positive changes to the way the command communicates with the families and how it conducts events. FUN FACTS ABOUT ERIN: I love life! I love my large loud family! I am very active in our church. I LOVE puzzles, I love to craft, I love love love music, all kinds. Playing the piano brings a calm to my spirit. I love to sing. I have been in some musical theatre productions. I am seriously afraid of frogs, like heart-stops-beating afraid, lol….no joke... I love to feed people. I LOVE to bake but not a fan of sweets myself. he results of Melody’s many years of volunteer service have achieved spectacular results; ranging from serving as a Room Parent to Auction Committee Chair where she helped bring in over $300,000 to being appointed as the Director of Finance for the Virginia Association of Colleges and Employers, a non-profit organization to being appointed as the Command Family Ombudsman of HSC-7, where he husband, Robert is currently station along with 275 other sailors and their families. Over the years, Melody has inspired and educated countless other volunteers to donate their time and efforts to causes that are near to them. She has brought her skills as an educator to her volunteer work, patiently guiding others. Her ability to motivate and organize others has had a lasting effect on her community and families she interacts with. In Melody’s Ombudsman role, she would often time put the needs of other military families before hers just to ensure they had the resources and support that they needed especially during long deployments. Melody champions several committees at work too. At ODU, she serves as a First Generation Mentor to first-generation college students, is a Safe Space faculty member for the LGBTQIA community and sits on the Professional Development Committee for her division. Recently, she was also selected as the Mid-Level Manager for the Year for her division.

tacy took on PTA president at her daughters school, took in her 3 year old nephew so his mother could get through Navy boot camp and then on top of all of that got pregnant only 3 months after her surgery it was a high risk pregnancy because of that, found out that the baby had teratoma tumors and P5minsu genetic defect, during all of this her husband was sent TAD to a carrier in California due to manning shortages he was gone six weeks (all of the time the nephew was there), she has 3 daughters 8, 6, and 5 the oldest is Autistic and ADHD. Every year even this year despite all that was going on in her family put together 50 Mother’s Day bags for the Her Shelter and will be making up 100 bags this year for the NICU nurses at VCU which is where she had her daughter, Sophie Jean on Jan 15th at 32 weeks who only lived 36 hours. Even in this tragedy she allowed an autopsy of her daughter to hopefully help other families in the future.
She created a Facebook page ‘Baby B’s journey to this world’ during her pregnancy to allow other people to follow the story and she has received countless posts from other women who have struggled with a high risk pregnancy and loss of a child giving them courage and strength to go on. elanie is a military spouse of 25 years and counting. She loves the role of military spouse and she is always looking for opportunities to serve her fellow spouse community. She currently serves an Ombudsman for her husband’s ship/command; she works in a job where she coaches military spouses to prepare for employment, training, and networking. Melanie hosts various events for military spouses including raising $25,000 in scholarships for military spouses and children to attend college. She also served as a provider for the Homeless Service project reaching out to military veterans living on the streets and providing information and resources. Melanie also created a Military Spouse Mentoring Initiative where she is providing guidance to military spouses in the areas of military life, moving stressors, family/life balance, and military social etiquette.
FUN FACTS ABOUT STACY: I love fancy tea parties. In fact, I host them several times a year as part of a military spouse mentoring opportunity. I even wear my tiara! I enjoy hiking and kayaking also.

ilitary life is very familiar to Jennifer, who comes from a long line of military family members. Her father served 40 years in the Army and was a pastor. Her siblings, both of her grandfathers, three uncles, two aunts, and eight cousins have also served. She began her a life as a military spouse when she married her husband, who was a single military father of 4. Jennifer has earned two Associate degrees, a Bachelor’s degree and two certifications, but she found her true calling was helping
others. She assists the USO with multiple events throughout the year and she is the current PTA treasurer. Jennifer also works as the Ombudsman for the USS Dwight D Eisenhower assisting sailors with their every changing need on a daily basis. She is always on call to help families onboard the ship no matter the time or day. She packages meals for through the Food Bank of Virginia and Troopster’s. During our recent government shut down, Jennifer stepped in to help our Coast Guard families in need by sorting food, picking up donations and handing out feed. Jennifer is a true hero at home because she is willing, caring and compassionate.
