accompanied the first settlers are the predecessors of the thousands of men and women who have donned uniforms to protect the United States. The region is proud to house bases associated with each branch of the military, including: Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Fort Monroe, Coast Guard Station Portsmouth and numerous Navy bases – including Naval Station Norfolk, Naval Air Station Oceana, Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story. With so much presence in the area, the Navy is the heart of the region. With more than 95,000 uniformed men and women currently stationed here, the Navy has had undeniable impact on the region’s history, economy and culture. More than 300,000 residents are part of the Navy family, plus an overwhelming number of retired or separated Sailors who choose to remain here. Naval Station Norfolk is the world’s largest naval base. More than 60,000 military and 10,000 civilian personnel work on the base, which homeports more than 80 Atlantic Fleet ships and 16 squadrons. The world’s largest amphibious base – formerly Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek and now part of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story – is the homeport for 30 amphibious ships, including patrol aircraft and salvage ships. About 80 tenant commands are based at JEB-Little Creek, including Naval Special Warfare Group II, East Coast-based SEALs and the Armed Forces School of Music.
The Armed Forces have played a pivotal role in Hampton Roads, a nautical term meaning protected anchorage or safe harbor, since the English set foot here in 1607.

JEB-Fort Story is home to the 11th Transportation Battalion, which conducts amphibious operations. It is the Army’s only saltwater-purification training site. The site offers amphibious training for all branches, including explosive ordnance disposal Sailors and Navy SEALs. Naval Air Station Oceana is the most sophisticated and critically important air station in the Navy, with collectively almost 20 squadrons and almost 300 aircraft stationed there. The base employs 10,500 military and 2,340 civilian personnel. Dam Neck Annex, also part of NAS Oceana, hosts the Fleet Combat Training Center, which trains more than 1,000 students each month. Dam Neck employs another 2,412 military and 1,080 civilian personnel. Naval Weapons Station Yorktown is the Navy’s premiere weapons facility. More than 3,000 military and civilian personnel work on the 11,500-acre base, maintaining missiles and other ordnance for the Atlantic Fleet. Chesapeake’s history goes far back into Virginia’s colonial roots. On the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, which passes through Chesapeake, lays the site of the Battle of Great Bridge. On Dec. 9, 1775, the red coats and colonists clashed in the Battle of Great Bridge when the American rebels defeated the British and drove them from nearby Norfolk. Today, the municipal center complex rests a few hundred yards from that historic spot. Until the late 1980s and early 1990s, much of Chesapeake was either suburban or rural, serving as a bedroom community for the cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach with residents commuting to these locations. Beginning in the late 1980s and accelerating in the 1990s, however, Chesapeake saw significant growth, attracting numerous industries and businesses of its own. The business community includes more than 80 foreign-based companies from 19 different countries. This economic development and the attractive residential properties have created a population boom. Chesapeake has grown from 78,000 at its inception to an estimated 222,209 in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Today, Chesapeake is a vibrant community that enjoys the best of two worlds – one of urban variety, culture and excitement and another of rural landscapes and relaxed country living. The city has more miles of deepwater canals than any other in the country. The Dismal Swamp Canal runs through Chesapeake as well. It is the oldest continuously used man-made canal in the United States today and has been in service for over 230 years.

was formally organized and became independent of Warwick County in 1896 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly. It was one of only a few cities in Virginia to be newly established without earlier incorporation as a town. Newport News is currently ranked as Virginia’s ďŹ fth largest incorporated city by population and is located at the southwestern end of the Virginia Peninsula on the north shore of the James River, thus playing a huge role in the maritime industry. The City of Newport News was essentially founded by Collis P. Huntington. Huntington, a Northern railroad tycoon from Connecticut, brought two magnet industries to Newport News: the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Now known as Northrop Grumman Newport News, the shipyard, chartered in 1886, has built aircraft carriers for the Navy since the 1930s, including the ďŹ rst nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and is today the sole builder of the Navy’s carriers. The ďŹ rst vessel built by the yard was the tugboat Dorothy. Newport News is also home to the Army’s Fort Eustis, home of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps and to the U.S. Army Transportation Museum, featuring traditional and experimental devices like the Avro-Car which resembles a ying saucer. The city provides residents and visitors with plenty to do. History buffs can stroll through Civil War battleďŹ elds and 1862 Peninsula Campaign sites or peruse the exhibits at The Mariner’s Museum, which records 3,000 years of maritime history. Children of all ages love the Virginia Living Museum where exhibits depict Virginia’s natural heritage from the mountains to the sea and introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia through discovery centers and interactive hands-on exhibits.

32482621 is an independent city located on the Virginia Peninsula, and is the oldest continuously named city in Virginia. It is also one of the few to retain a name which derived from the Native Americans who inhabited the area before colonization by the English began in the 17th century. The term “poquoson” was used to describe a boundary line between two elevated tracts of land. Such a boundary contained a stream, river, or creek with its adjoining marsh which lay between two tracts of higher ground. Poquoson was used as a common noun and is found in many deeds along the eastern seaboard. Through the years the term became a proper noun for the land that lies between two such Poquoson’s – the Old Poquoson River and the New Poquoson River. The first mention of Poquoson was in Captain Christopher Calthrope land grant issued by a court in Elizabeth City on April 26, 1631. Three years later the Poquoson Parish was named as a beneficiary in the will of Benjamin Symms for “a free school to educate and teach the children of Elizabeth City and Poquoson.” This New Poquoson Parish originally included the areas known today as Poquoson, Tabb, Grafton, Dare and Seaford. The southern portion of the Poquoson District in York County was incorporated in 1952 to retain control over its schools.
The city form of government was adopted in 1975. Poquoson, which was formerly part of York County, became an incorporated town in 1952 and an independent city in 1975. However, the ties remain close. Over 30 years after Poquoson became a politically independent entity, some constitutional services such as the courts, sheriff and jail continue to be shared with neighboring York County.

It is home to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area Command, 5th District Command, Integrated Support Command and Sector Hampton Roads. These facilities employ nearly 20,000 servicemen and women, almost one third of all jobs in the city. By virtue of central location and convenient water crossings, Portsmouth is within an easy commute of all area military installations, beaches, shopping, cultural and historical attractions. The downtown area boasts more than 40 shops and restaurants, the Children’s Museum of Virginia, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, a waterfront amphitheater, and year round festivals and special events. Portsmouth has seven historic districts including Old Towne, the largest collection of historic homes between Alexandria, Va. and Charleston, S.C., and many other neighborhoods featuring single family homes for every budget. Recent construction brought new apartment developments to the city with modern amenities and catering to military personnel. Public safety and education are two top local priorities. City schools are accredited, modern and safe. There are plenty of affordable private schools available too. Neighborhoods have impact officers so the police can play active and visible roles in keeping the community safe by partnering with residents and civic leagues. Many teachers and public safety professionals are former military or military spouses.

9,5*,1,$ %($&+ the most populous city in Virginia, began as a small resort area in Princess Anne County after the 1888 arrival of rail service and electricity and the opening of the original Princess Anne Hotel at the oceanfront near the tiny community of Seatack. The growing resort of Virginia Beach became an incorporated town in 1906 and an incorporated city in 1952. Although the resort was initially dependent upon railroad and electric trolley service, the completion of Virginia Beach Blvd. in 1922, which extended from Norfolk to the oceanfront, opened the way for automobiles, buses, trucks and passenger rail service, the latter of which was eventually discontinued. Virginia Beach is a resort city with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels and restaurants along its oceanfront. Every year the city hosts the East Coast SurďŹ ng Championship as well as the North American Sand Soccer Championship. It was renamed Williamsburg after the capital of the Virginia Colony was moved there from Jamestown in 1698. The new city was renamed in honor of England’s reigning monarch, King William III. Williamsburg became one of America’s ďŹ rst planned cities. Laid out in 1699 under the supervision of Gov. Francis Nicholson, it was to be a “new and well-ordered cityâ€? suitable for the capital of the largest and most populous of the British colonies in America. A succession of beautiful capitol buildings became home to the oldest legislative assembly in the New World. The town received a royal charter as a city in 1722. The young city grew quickly into the center of political, religious, economic and social life in Virginia leading to the American Revolution. Williamsburg also became a center of learning. Famous political leaders emerged from the College of William and Mary, (which had been founded in 1693), such as Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler. The ďŹ rst hospital established in America for the care and treatment of mental illness was founded in Williamsburg in 1773. General George Washington assembled the Continental Army in Williamsburg in 1781 for the siege of nearby Yorktown and the winning of American independence. The Capital was again moved in 1780, this time up the James River to Richmond, where it remains today. With Williamsburg known internationally as the premier center for the preservation and interpretation of American colonial history, the Historic Triangle of Virginia, which also includes Jamestown and Yorktown, is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The three are linked by the National Park Service’s rural Colonial Parkway, a 23-mile-long National Scenic Byway which is carefully shielded from views of commercial development.

RICHMOND Curving around a bend in the James River, Richmond, Virginia’s state capital, is a many-faceted city. Burned and rebuilt twice (Revolutionary and Civil Wars respectively) and once the headquarters of the Confederacy, this historic urban center is now home to major universities and Fortune 500 companies as well as expansive parks. While there is plenty of suburban sprawl at its edges (as well as the Richmond International Raceway and an international airport) and a good bit of the city fringe that ranges towards the ramshackle, the aged heart of Richmond is ostensibly atmospheric, dotted with cultural sights and framed for blocks by historic buildings (there are over 20 national and state historic districts in the downtown area alone).

$5281' +$03721 52$'6 CHARLOTTESVILLE/ PRESIDENTIAL HOMES Charlottesville, a charming little city surrounded by the hazy Blue Ridge Mountains and acres of rolling farmland, bears the mark of Thomas Jefferson. The third president built his home in the hills nearby and founded the University of Virginia located here, which has continued to flourish over the intervening centuries. Most tourists come to the area to visit three presidential homes. Located three miles southeast of town, Thomas Jefferson’s former home, Monticello is set on 1,000 acres of restored gardens and is open daily (guided tours only of the house itself). Montpelier, one-time home of third president James Madison is located just south of the town of Orange (the residence itself recently restored), while Ash Lawn-Highland, the home of James Monroe, is located near Monticello and Michie Tavern, built in 1784.
