Norfolk International Airport provides an information booth from 8 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Uniformed personnel have information about Hampton Roads bases, transportation and telephone numbers for duty offices, ombudsmen and emergency assistance. The booth may be reached by calling 444-3040.

In an effort to make moving a little bit easier for you, the US Department of Defense (DoD) United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) and the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) developed the Defense Personal Property Program, or DP3. As part of the DP3 mission, an internet-based system to manage DoD household goods moves was created. It’s called the Defense Personal Property System (DPS).Through DPS and the DP3 initiative, you will have the ability to selfcounsel and submit your application online, track your shipment through DPS or Interactive Voice Response (IVR), have the option to file a claim online, and to settle directly with your moving company as well as Full Replacement Value (FRV) of lost and damaged goods.

Household Goods The Consolidated Personal Property Shipping Offices (CPPSO) in Norfolk and at Joint Base Langley-Eustis has a full range of services available including storage of household goods, baggage and vehicles. Contact the CPPSO upon arrival even if the delivery address is unknown. For those who plan to live on the Southside, call 443-3700 and follow the prompts. For those who plan to live on the Peninsula, call 764-2045. Before signing delivery documents, note all known loss or damage sustained to the shipment. Navy Lodges Hampton Roads offers three convenient Navy Lodge locations at Naval Station Norfolk, JEB Little Creek and Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic, Dam Neck. The Norfolk Lodge provides 292 rooms, including eight suites; Little Creek offers 100 rooms and Dam Neck offers 50 rooms. These modern, comfortable rooms provide more conveniences to their guests than one might expect from a commercial chain of hotels. Cribs are available upon request, as well as irons and ironing boards. Personnel can make reservations anytime in advance. Orders must be presented at check-in along with a valid military identiﬁcation. Reservations are held up to 6 p.m. without deposit. Check-in time is 3 p.m., but early arrivals will be accommodated according to room availability. For Public Private Venture (PPV) housing, Navy Housing counselors qualify members for PPV Housing. Housing counselors will process housing applications for referral to PPV housing. Lincoln Military Housing is the housing partner who managers the PPV homes. Members are also counseled on lease agreements, sales contracts, tenant and landlord issues and other housing concerns. Service members can rent apartments, condominiums, town homes and houses through the Rental Partnership Program (RPP). Properties extend from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg. The RPP provides affordable housing at a discounted rate. Military members agree to a one-year ease and pay rent by allotment. Other savings for civilian property managers and owners include reduced turnovers, operations and maintenance costs. Details are available at the Navy Housing Welcome Center. The Navy Housing Welcome Center maintains a large data base of community rental and sales listings to suit every need. Services are customized to assist in locating living accommodations and to familiarize customers with the Hampton Roads area. It provides home buying, selling and property management workshops each month. The instructors are Realty specialists who provide information about the home buying process, how to determine the sales price, selecting a real estate agent and real estate closing details. Housing information for outbound families is available in the departure library. Plan for your new duty station by visiting the Navy Housing Welcome Center where you can access information on all military bases worldwide. Treasure Shop Naval Station Norfolk’s Treasure Shop is located in the former Immaculate Conception Chapel. Founded in 1973, The Treasure Shop is a nonproﬁt consignment shop operated by military and civilian volunteers. All Treasure Shop proceeds go to local charities. Chesapeake was formed in 1963 by a political consolidation of the City of South Norfolk with the former Norfolk County, which dated to 1691. The new city joined the ranks of the current Seven Cities of Hampton Roads which are linked by the circumferential Hampton Roads Beltway. Chesapeake is a vibrant community that enjoys the best of two worlds – one of urban variety, culture and excitement and another of rural landscapes and relaxed country living. It is host to many culturally-diverse events and is home to many beautiful parks, lakes and rivers. The city has more miles of deepwater canals than any other in the country. The Dismal Swamp Canal runs through Chesapeake as well. It is the oldest continuously used man-made canal in the United States today and has been in service for over 230 years. Chesapeake is home to Naval Auxiliary Landing Field Fentress, a Navy facility under Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.

Hampton is one of America’s oldest cities and with a proud and rich history and is one of the fastest growing cities in the region. James City County began as the roots of our nation’s heritage spread from Jamestown. For thousands of years, migratory hunters lived along the Chesapeake Bay.

The County was formally created in 1634 as James City Shire by order of King Charles I. James City County is considered one of only eight original shires of Virginia to still be in existence today in essentially the same political form. World War I brought the twentieth century to James City County’s doorstep. The peninsula became a center for troop training and embarkation, munitions manufacturing, and supply storage. By the 1920s, automobile travel had begun to revolutionize the economy. The restoration of the old capital of Williamsburg was a vital factor in minimizing the effect of the 1930s depression, helping spur the local economy until the beginning of World War II. The county is home to the Busch Gardens Europe theme park, the massive Kingsmill Resort, and the Williamsburg Pottery Factory. The Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement attractions combine with Colonial Williamsburg, and are linked to Yorktown by the National Park Service’s bucolic Colonial Parkway, for worldwide tourism to the Historic Triangle.

Newport News was named for Christopher Newport, captain of the Susan Constant, the lead ship of the three ship ďŹ‚eet that carried the Jamestown settlers to the new world in 1607.

The City of Newport News was formally organized and became independent of Warwick County in 1896. It was essentially founded by Collis P. Huntington. Huntington, a Northern railroad tycoon from Connecticut, brought two magnet industries to Newport News: the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Now known as Northrop Grumman Newport News, the shipyard, chartered in 1886, has built aircraft carriers for the Navy since the 1930s, including the ďŹ rst nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and is today the sole builder of the Navyâ€™s carriers. The ďŹ rst vessel built by the yard was the tugboat Dorothy. Newport News is also home to the Armyâ€™s Fort Eustis, home of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps and to the U.S. Army Transportation Museum, featuring traditional and experimental devices like the Avro-Car which resembles a ďŹ‚ying saucer. History buffs can stroll through Civil War battleďŹ elds and 1862 Peninsula Campaign sites or peruse the exhibits at The Marinerâ€™s Museum, which records 3,000 years of maritime history. Children of all ages love the Virginia Living Museum where exhibits depict Virginiaâ€™s natural heritage from the mountains to the sea and introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia.

Norfolk is home to the world’s largest naval base and the North American Headquarters for NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization).

Established in 1624, Norfolk was the colony’s most prosperous town by 1775. It was an important port for exporting goods to the British Isles and beyond. But on New Year’s Day 1776, during the three-day siege of the Revolutionary War, most of Norfolk’s early structures were destroyed. In the spring of 1862, the Battle of Hampton Roads took place off the northwest shore of the city’s Sewell’s Point Peninsula, marking the ﬁrst ﬁght between two ironclads, USS Monitor and CSS Virginia. 1907 brought both the Virginian Railway and the Jamestown Exposition to Sewell’s Point. The large naval Review at the exposition demonstrated the Peninsula’s favorable location and laid the groundwork for the world’s largest Naval base. By 1917, as the United States built up to enter World War I, Naval Air Station Hampton Roads had been constructed. Now home to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest Navy base in the world, it is impossible to miss the imprint of the Navy at work and at play. Norfolk’s easily-walked downtown waterfront boasts attractions such as the battleship USS Wisconsin and Nauticus, The National Maritime Center, an interactive science and technology. Tugboats and visiting cruise ships share the waters with sailboats and merchant ships. Other treasures include The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk Botanical Gardens and the Virginia Zoological Park. The place now known as Poquoson was inhabited by Native Americans. They used the term “pocosin” to describe this area. The word loosely translates into “great marsh” or “ﬂat land.” The city’s name is said to be derived from this word. - citytowninfo.com

Poquoson is an independent city located on the Virginia Peninsula, and is the oldest continuously named city in Virginia. It is also one of the few to retain a name which derived from the Native Americans who inhabited the area before colonization by the English began in the 17th century. The ﬁrst mention of Poquoson was in Captain Christopher Calthrope land grant issued by a court in Elizabeth City on April 26, 1631. Three years later the Poquoson Parish was named as a beneﬁciary in the will of Benjamin Symms for “a free school to educate and teach the children of Elizabeth City and Poquoson.” This New Poquoson Parish originally included the areas known today as Poquoson, Tabb, Grafton, Dare and Seaford. Poquoson, which was formerly part of York County, became an incorporated town in 1952 and an independent city in 1975. However, the ties remain close. Over 30 years after Poquoson became a politically independent entity, some constitutional services such as the courts, sheriff and jail continue to be shared with neighboring York County.

PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth, named for Portsmouth, England, is the smallest in Hampton Roads. It was founded in 1752 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on behalf of Col. William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner, who dedicated the four corners of High and Court Streets for a church, a market, a courthouse and a jail. Portsmouth is also home to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Established in the 1830s, the facility is the Navy’s oldest continuously operating medical hospital. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, the oldest shipyard in the country – actually located in Portsmouth despite the name – is a historic and active U.S. Navy facility that builds, remodels and repairs all classes of Navy ships. Portsmouth is also headquarters to the Coast Guard’s Fifth District and the Coast Guard’s Integrated Support Command. Many of Portsmouth’s attractions are clustered within easy walking distance of each other, making it the perfect place to spend a day. And with its central location, it’s easy to get to – just a quick ferry ride from downtown Norfolk, a 20-minute drive from Virginia Beach and less than an hour from Colonial Williamsburg. The Children’s Museum of Virginia is the state’s largest children’s museum. Sports enthusiasts will love the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, which honors Virginia sports ﬁgures.

Of all the Hampton Roads communities, Suffolk offers the greatest opportunity for a little extra acreage for real country living. Suffolk was founded by English colonists in 1742 as a port town on the Nansemond River as part of the Virginia Colony. On April 26, 1607, after a long journey across the treacherous Atlantic Ocean, the famous pioneer John Smith and his crew stepped ashore the sands of Virginia Beach and spent several days scouting the area before heading north to colonize Jamestown.

The most populous city in Virginia, it began as a small resort area in Princess Anne County after the 1888 arrival of rail service and electricity and the opening of the original Princess Anne Hotel at the oceanfront near the tiny community of Seatack. The growing resort of Virginia Beach became an incorporated town in 1906 and an incorporated city in 1952. Virginia Beach is a resort city with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels and restaurants along its oceanfront. The city features 79 miles of scenic waterway, 60 miles of bike paths, 38 miles of shoreline and 28 miles of public beach. The Contemporary Art Museum of Virginia features internationally renowned artists, as well as regional and local favorites. Animal lovers should not miss the Virginia Aquarium. The American Music Festival, the Virginia Beach Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend, and the NAS Oceana Air Show are just a few of the city’s festivals and events not to be missed. Although Virginia Beach is best known for its tourism, the military and agribusiness sectors contribute considerably to the city’s economy. Virginia Beach is home to three military installations – Naval Air Station Oceana, NAS Oceana Dam Neck Annex and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

Williamsburg became one of America’s ﬁrst planned cities. Laid out in 1699 under the supervision of Gov. Francis Nicholson, it was to be a “new and well-ordered city” suitable for the capital of the largest and most populous of the British colonies in America. Williamsburg also became a center of learning. Famous political leaders emerged from the College of William and Mary, (which had been founded in 1693), such as Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler. General George Washington assembled the Continental Army in Williamsburg in 1781 for the siege of nearby Yorktown and the winning of American independence. The Capital was again moved in 1780, this time up the James River to Richmond, where it remains today. With Williamsburg known internationally as the premier center for the preservation and interpretation of American colonial history, the Historic Triangle of Virginia, which also includes Jamestown and Yorktown, is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. York County is home to several large and important military facilities of the United States. Located along the York River, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown was originally established during World War I by order of President Woodrow Wilson, and now includes the formerly separate Cheatham Annex Supply Complex. Camp Peary was established during World War II as a Seabee Training Base and is currently referred to as the Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity. Yorktown played a role in not only the American Revolution but also during the Civil War. In 1862 it was the site of the ﬁrst siege operations of the Civil War. In May 1862 Confederates abandoned Yorktown and Union troops occupied it for the remainder of the war.

York County stretches 27 miles between Williamsburg and Hampton and is part of the “Historic Triangle” of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Yorktown, which hosts millions of tourists each year, especially during the 400th anniversary of the 1607 founding of Jamestown in 2007. During its 350-year history, the County of York has ﬁgured prominently in both the political and economic history of the Virginia Peninsula, the Commonwealth, and the Nation. Yorktown also ﬁgured prominently in the Civil War, serving as a major port to supply both northern and southern towns, depending on who held Yorktown at the time.
