'HIHQVH 3HUVRQDO 3URSHUW\ '36 0RYH PLO In an effort to make moving a little bit easier for you, the US Department of Defense (DoD) United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) and the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) developed the Defense Personal Property Program, or DP3. As part of the DP3 mission, an internet-based system to manage DoD household goods moves was created. It’s called the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). Through DPS and the DP3 initiative, you will have the ability to self-counsel and submit your application online, track your shipment through DPS or Interactive Voice Response (IVR), have the option to ﬁle a claim online, and to settle directly with your moving company as well as Full Replacement Value (FRV) of lost and damaged goods.

Service members can rent apartments, condominiums, town homes and houses through the Rental Partnership Program (RPP). Properties extend from Virginia Beach to Williamsburg. Chesapeake is a vibrant community that enjoys the best of two worlds â€“ one of urban variety, culture and excitement and another of rural landscapes and relaxed country living. It is host to many culturally-diverse events and is home to many beautiful parks, lakes and rivers. The city has more miles of deepwater canals than any other in the country. The Dismal Swamp Canal runs through Chesapeake as well. It is the oldest continuously used man-made canal in the United States today and has been in service for over 230 years. The County was formally created in 1634 as James City Shire by order of King Charles I. James City County is considered one of only eight original shires of Virginia to still be in existence today in essentially the same political form.

World War I brought the twentieth century to James City Countyâ€™s doorstep. The peninsula became a center for troop training and embarkation, munitions manufacturing, and supply storage. By the 1920s, automobile travel had begun to revolutionize the economy. The restoration of the old capital of Williamsburg was a vital factor in minimizing the effect of the 1930s depression, helping spur the local economy until the beginning of World War II. The county is home to the Busch Gardens Europe theme park, the massive Kingsmill Resort, and the Williamsburg Pottery Factory. The Historic Jamestowne and Jamestown Settlement attractions combine with Colonial Williamsburg, and are linked to Yorktown by the National Park Serviceâ€™s bucolic Colonial Parkway, to make worldwide tourism to the Historic Triangle a major economic activity for the county.

1HZSRUW 1HZV The City of Newport News was formally organized and became independent of Warwick County in 1896. It was essentially founded by Collis P. Huntington. Huntington, a Northern railroad tycoon from Connecti&,7< ,1)2 cut, brought two magnet industries to ZZZ QQJRY FRP Newport News: the Chesapeake and Ohio VER QQ N YD XV Railroad and Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Now known as Northrop Grumman Newport News, the shipyard, chartered in 1886, has built aircraft carriers for the Navy since the 1930s, including the ďŹ rst nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise and is today the sole builder of the Navyâ€™s carriers. The ďŹ rst vessel built by the yard was the tugboat Dorothy. Newport News is also home to the Armyâ€™s Fort Eustis, home of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps and to the U.S. Army Transportation Museum, featuring traditional and experimental devices like the Avro-Car which resembles a ďŹ‚ying saucer. The city provides residents and visitors with plenty to do. History buffs can stroll through Civil War battleďŹ elds and 1862 Peninsula Campaign sites or peruse the exhibits at The Marinerâ€™s Museum, which records 3,000 years of maritime history. Children of all ages love the Virginia Living Museum where exhibits depict Virginiaâ€™s natural heritage from the mountains to the sea and introduces visitors to more than 250 living species native to Virginia through discovery centers and interactive hands-on exhibits.

1RUIRON Established in 1624, Norfolk was the colonyâ€™s most prosperous town by 1775. (67 It was an important port for exporting goods to the British Isles and beyond. But on New Yearâ€™s Day 1776, &,7< ,1)2 during the three-day siege of the ZZZ QRUIRON JRY Revolutionary War, most of Norfolkâ€™s QSV N YD XV early structures were destroyed. In the spring of 1862, the Battle of Hampton Roads took place off the northwest shore of the cityâ€™s Sewellâ€™s Point Peninsula, marking the ďŹ rst ďŹ ght between two ironclads, USS Monitor and CSS Virginia.

1907 brought both the Virginian Railway and the Jamestown Exposition to Sewellâ€™s Point. The large naval Review at the exposition demonstrated the Peninsulaâ€™s favorable location and laid the groundwork for the worldâ€™s largest Naval base. By 1917, as the United States built up to enter World War I, Naval Air Station Hampton Roads had been constructed. Now home to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest Navy base in the world, it is impossible to miss the imprint of the Navy at work and at play. Norfolkâ€™s easily-walked downtown waterfront boasts attractions such as the battleship USS Wisconsin and Nauticus, The National Maritime Center, an interactive science and technology. Tugboats and visiting cruise ships share the waters with sailboats and merchant ships. Other treasures include The Chrysler Museum, Norfolk Botanical Gardens and the Virginia Zoological Park. Norfolk serves as home to the two highest level professional franchises in the state of Virginia, the Norfolk Tides baseball team and the Norfolk Admirals hockey team.

3RTXRVRQ Poquoson is an independent city lo(67 cated on the Virginia Peninsula, and is the oldest continuously named city in Virginia. It is also one of the few to retain a name which derived &,7< ,1)2 FL SRTXRVRQ YD XV from the Native Americans who SRTXRVRQ N YD XV inhabited the area before colonization by the English began in the 17th century. The ďŹ rst mention of Poquoson was in Captain Christopher Calthrope land grant issued by a court in Elizabeth City on April 26, 1631. Three years later the Poquoson Parish was named as a beneďŹ ciary in the will of Benjamin Symms for â€œa free school to educate and teach the children of Elizabeth City and Poquoson.â€? This New Poquoson Parish originally included the areas known today as Poquoson, Tabb, Grafton, Dare and Seaford.

The place now known as Poquoson was inhabited by Native Americans. They used the term "pocosin" to describe this area. The word loosely translates into "great marsh" or "flat land." The cityâ€™s name is said to be derived from this word. - citytowninfo.com

Poquoson, which was formerly part of York County, became an incorporated town in 1952 and an independent city in 1975. However, the ties remain close. Over 30 years after Poquoson became a politically independent entity, some constitutional services such as the courts, sheriff and jail continue to be shared with neighboring York County.

Portsmouth, named for Portsmouth, England, is the smallest in Hampton Roads. It was founded in 1752 by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on behalf of Col. William Crawford, a wealthy merchant and ship owner, who dedicated the four corners of High and Court Streets for a church, a market, a courthouse and a jail.

Portsmouth is also home to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Established in the 1830s, the facility is the Navyâ€™s oldest continuously operating medical hospital. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, the oldest shipyard in the country â€“ actually located in Portsmouth despite the name â€“ is a historic and active U.S. Navy facility that builds, remodels and repairs all classes of Navy ships. Portsmouth is also headquarters to the Coast Guardâ€™s Fifth District and the Coast Guardâ€™s Integrated Support Command. Many of Portsmouthâ€™s attractions are clustered within easy walking distance of each other, making it the perfect place to spend a day. And with its central location, itâ€™s easy to get to â€“ just a quick ferry ride from downtown Norfolk, a 20-minute drive from Virginia Beach and less than an hour from Colonial Williamsburg. The Childrenâ€™s Museum of Virginia is the stateâ€™s largest childrenâ€™s museum. Sports enthusiasts will love the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, which honors Virginia sports ďŹ gures.

6XIIRON Of all the Hampton Roads communities, (67 Suffolk offers the greatest opportunity for a little extra acreage for real country living. Geographically, Suffolk is the largest independent city in land area &,7< ,1)2 in the entire Commonwealth. Though it VXIIRON YD XV ZZZ VSVN QHW is the largest of the cities in Hampton Roads, it has the smallest population. Course admission is subject to the policies of each school division and space availability in the class.
