Members of the Hampton Roads community gathered to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor during a memorial service, Dec. 7, at Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story. Seven survivors of the attack were present to honor the sacrifices of their fallen comrades and the survivors who have passed since. “I brought my 9-year-old son today because it’s important to remember the past,” said Jeff Taylor, grandson of Frank Chebetar, former president of the Tidewater Chapter of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association. “If you don't learn from it, you will not know what to do or who to turn to for your future.” After opening remarks, each of the seven survivors in attendance “called-out,” stating his name and command. “These survivors remind us that we must remain vigilant, dedicated and courageous in our fight to eliminate terrorism and those that would do us harm,” said U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Stephen Metruck, Commander, Fifth Coast Guard District. “Although the attack on Pearl Harbor was devastating, it revealed the resiliency of the U.S. military and brought to light the character of the survivors and the character of the many from that great generation who are no longer with us.” During the attack on Pearl Harbor, 2,335 service members were killed, more than 1,100 wounded and 16 ships were either sunk or damaged. “We have a duty to bridge the generations and keep that legacy of service, and the foundation of honor, courage and commitment,” said JEB Little Creek-Fort Story’s commanding officer Capt. Frank Hughlett. “You cannot personify our core values any better than what our Pearl Harbor survivors have done for us.” The ceremony concluded with a 21-gun salute, the placing of a commemorative wreath, and the survivors leading all in attendance in singing “God Bless America.”

An addition to this year’s event was the USO Show Troup who sang the National Anthem and other holiday songs. They even tested their dance talents with the kids as the DJ played holiday music and line dance songs. However, the real star of the show was Santa Claus who made an appearance to collect Christmas wishes from the children in attendance. ~JEBLCFS Public Affairs
