This yearâs Fleet Fest at Naval Station Norfolk closed out Fleet Week Hampton Roads and a series of Navy Birthday events with a resounding success, Oct. 19 â 21. The event opened on Friday, Oct. 19th, to 5th graders at Norfolk schools for STEM exhibits, ship tours and static displays. Later that evening there was a free concert to kick off the event. The concert was opened by U.S. Fleet Forces Brass Band and the headliner was 3 Doors Down. The concert was attended by more than 3,850 people and was open to the general public. On Saturday Naval Station Norfolk gates opened at 11 a.m. to the general public who were able to participate in ship tours, booths from local programs and organizations, a chili-cook off, a car show, a kidâs area with bounce houses, games and activities, military static displays and interactive stations, local food trucks, multiple breweries and entertainment. This yearâs entertainers included Hampton Roadâs popular 80âs cover band, The Deloreans, magicians, stilt walkers and more. Throughout the two days, this yearâs Fleet Fest saw 9,850 guests. The base is hoping to see just as many or more next year.

Harry S. Truman Strike Group enters Arctic Circle, prepares for NATO Exercise From Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group Public Affairs ARCTIC CIRCLE
For the ďŹrst time in nearly 30 years, a U.S. aircraft carrier entered the Arctic Circle Oct. 19 to conduct operations in the Norwegian Sea. Accompanied by select ships from Carrier Strike Group Eight (CSG-8), the Nimitzclass aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) traveled north to demonstrate the ďŹexibility and toughness of U.S. naval forces
through high-end warfare training with regional allies and partners. USS America (CV 66) was the last ship to operate in the area, participating in NATO exercise North Star in September 1991. âWe are unbelievably excited to be operating in the Norwegian Sea,â said Harry S. Truman Commanding OfďŹcer, Capt. Nick Dienna. âIt has been over three decades since carrier aviation has been tested by this environment, and, despite the arduous weather and sea conditions, these men and women are demonstrating this ship can bring a full-spectrum of capabilities to bear anywhere in the world.â The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG) will expand its compliment of capabilities off the coast of Norway, performing air, surface and subsurface operations while being confronted by the trio of freezing temperatures, ďŹerce winds, and unpredictable seas.
