NORFOLK

Aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) returned to its homeport, Naval Station Norfolk, Aug. 29, after conducting sea trials following an extensive four-year refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). Sea trials are a multi-day underway period to test the carrier’s systems and overall mission readiness. Theodore Roosevelt conducted sea trials after departing from Huntington Ingalls Industries - Newport News Shipbuilding (HII-NNS) shipyard at Newport News.

Navy releases AFTT final Environmental Impact Statement

Representatives from Navy Personnel Command’s (NPC) fleet engagement team visited Naval Station (NAVSTA) Norfolk to meet with Sailors and discuss the latest personnel policies and initiatives impacting the fleet, Aug. 28.

VAW-125 beautifies “Adopt A Spot” on NAVSTA Norfolk Sailors and Officers of VAW-125 dedicated time on to beautify their adopted spot aboard Naval Station Norfolk, Aug. 16. The command gathered at the start of the work day to ensure that the area along Bellinger Blvd. on the bay and across the street from LP-34 was cleaned and presentable. They walked the seawall searching for trash and debris that tends to collect there due to wind and the proximity to Bellinger Blvd. Approximately two trash bags full of debris were collected, greatly improving the appearance of the area.

The U.S. Navy has prepared and released to the public a Final Environmental Impact Statement/Overseas Environmental Impact Statement (EIS/OEIS) for training and testing activities conducted in the Atlantic Fleet Training and Testing (AFTT) Study Area. The AFTT region covers approximately 2.6 million square-nautical miles and encompasses the at-sea portions of Navy training range complexes and research, development, testing and evaluation ranges along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. The AFTT EIS/OEIS updates the science and analyses of environmental studies that were completed in 2009. This environmental analysis will enable at-sea testing and training so the U.S. Navy can effectively prepare forces to meet national requirements. The results of this study, which incorporates the best available science, coupled with Navy’s demonstrated track record (60-plus years) of similar training and testing with minimal environmental impacts,
