The guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG 67) departed Naval Station Norfolk Aug. 22, on a deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. After transiting the Atlantic Ocean, Cole will enter the Mediterranean Sea and surrounding waters to conduct maritime operations and strengthen partner nations’ maritime capabilities, promoting a secure maritime environment. “It is an honor to command Cole as we set sail,” said Cmdr. Dennis Farrell, the ship’s commanding officer. “The men and women who make up the crew of Cole are this nation’s best and brightest, and they have answered the call to serve America, protect the nation’s security, and carry out the maritime strategy.”

Smith, who served at the helm of CNSWG-2 since Aug. 2012. Rear Adm. Brian Losey, Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. “The change of command ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition, all hands would muster on deck and witness the formal transfer of authority from one commander to another,” said Losey. Losey spoke to an audience of more than 350 Naval Special Warfare (NSW) personnel, family, and friends about the accomplishments of CNSWG-2 and the forward deployed forces during Smith’s tenure as well as the shift in direction that he directly supported during his tour. “He’s done a tremendous job in realizing the vision of the continent of Africa,” said Losey. “Capt. Smith not only postured there from a command and control standpoint but coordinated with the State Department in each of the countries to remain postured to respond to U.S. unilateral interest if, and when necessary.”

Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) took part in a command motorcycle ride that began in Portsmouth, Va., and continued into North Carolina, passing through the border station in Moyock, N.C.,before returning to the Hampton Roads area Aug. 15. The ride served the dual purpose of building camaraderie and giving some of the less experienced riders the opportunity to learn valuable lessons from those who have been riding much longer. “It gives the riders a chance to come out and enjoy the open road with each other,” said Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate Thomas C. Austin, road king and ride coordinator. “[The ride] also provides training for the junior riders who can watch the others and gain knowledge that will help keep them safe.” More than 25 riders began with breakfast at 5:00 a.m. After breakfast the riders conducted inspections to ensure everyone riding would have a safe journey. Once it was determined
everyone was good to go, it was time to hit the road. “It’s nice that we can hold group rides like this,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class David Link, a rider in the event. “It helps to raise crew morale while [increasing] motorcycle safety awareness.” The endless highway, rolling hillsides and crisp air welcomed the riders with open arms. As the line of bikes approached the ferry landing to Knotts Island, no one wanted to stop riding. The ferry ride took about 45 minutes to reach the opposite shore. From there the riders rode to Monk’s Place, to grab a bite to eat. “I’m glad we got some riders out here, hopefully we will have even more for our next ride,” said Austin. After a little rest and relaxation it was time to finish the last leg of the journey. The line of motorcycles rumbled off from Monk’s Place around noon. Cruisers and sports bikes created a single file line, the various colors from the bikes painting the highway with each rider’s personality. The sun really started to shine through the thick North Carolina clouds on the last strip of road. As the

riders rolled into the border station, it was apparent that the ride was almost over. While at the border station they enjoyed soft ice cream which they dipped in a thick coat of chocolate syrup. The riders took a few moments to soak up the sun, exchange handshakes, take pictures and eat their ice cream before it was time to head home. “I would definitely say it was a success. There are more riders than I expected,” said Austin. “We all had a safe ride and that was the most important thing. I’m hoping to get another ride going in late September or early October.” The USS Eisenhower is currently undergoing a docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) period at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

The scene marked the beginning of the annual Chief Petty Officer Heritage Days at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, a two-day event held for the past 14 years to foster a sense of pride and naval heritage in the hearts of a new group of chief petty officer selectees. “It's to show them the strength and the force that they're now a part of,” said Chief Logistics Specialist Reginald Green, a volunteer at the event. “We want to show them they don't have to do it alone. They need to rely on each other; rely on the Chiefs Mess as a whole.” The experience included the opportunity to speak to several retired master chiefs who were able to relate their experience and wisdom. Retired Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Keith Barth, a volunteer as part of the old salts event, said that he

aimed to teach the soon-to-be chiefs the importance of being humble, of being confident but not cocky, and that chiefs should always be able to help their junior Sailors. “From World War II to the present day, leadership hasn't changed,” said Barth. “Leadership works in the chief's mess, and the selectees should listen to their chief petty officers for their experience.” Over the course of the event, the selectees visited the Iowa-class battleship USS Wisconsin (BB 64), a Navy vessel that served from 1943 to its final retirement in 1991. Wisconsin now acts as a museum ship, open to the public to come aboard and learn what life aboard a Navy vessel was really like. “This is the time to show them where we come from,” said Green. “We want them to see what chiefs had to endure aboard older vessels compared to what we have now.” The tour aboard the Wisconsin taught the selectees about a range of topics,

from older uniform styles to historical naval engagements. Chief Selectee Garvin Francis said that it was interesting to see how things were done back in the day, and that he learned several new things about chief petty officers that he had never heard before. Wherever the selectees went aboard the ship, the theme was the same: trust in your fellow chiefs and take care of your junior Sailors. “We all have to stick together,” said Francis. “We have to make sure we take care of our junior Sailors and train our junior officers.” Heritage Days allow both chiefs and chief selectees from a range of regionally-based commands to share their experiences and strengthen the kinship of the Chiefs Mess. “It's great for all of these chiefs and selectees from all these different commands to come together and share their views and their stories,” said Green. “It builds nothing but camaraderie.”

One hundred service members from local military installations woke up extra early Aug. 11 to catch a bus to Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Va. The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) and the Washington Redskins invited service members from Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana, Joint Base Langley and Fort Lee to an exclusive training camp experience. “We understand what it means to serve so we wanted to bring service members out today and kind of give them a first-hand experience and give them that VIP treatment that they deserve,” said Eliodoro Molina, a military affairs spokesman with USAA. Upon arrival, the uniformed service members filed into the training center where they were greeted with applause from patrons at the Redskins team store. “Every time something like that happens, it’s such a
humbling experience,” said Aviation Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Kelly Rosetta from Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 143. “Although I don’t feel I deserve that much appreciation, I know it’s their way of expressing how much they appreciate what we do. It never gets old.” When the service members arrived at the USAA tent, they were given gift bags filled with Redskins goodies. USAA representatives introduced themselves and invited everyone to enjoy a complimentary brunch and explore the training center. Rosetta, who claims to have been a Redskins fan “since birth,” said if she hadn’t gone to the training camp, she would have been on a detachment in Portland, Ore. “I found out I was going about two weeks prior and my command even held me back from going on a detachment to send me,” Rosetta said. “It meant so much that they went out of their way like that to give me this opportunity … I can’t say enough to express my gratitude.” The event concluded with
the closing of the Redskins practice. One by one, the players came off the field, heading into one of the training facilities, but not before stopping to acknowledge the 100 military members standing by to meet them. Players went down the line signing autographs, taking photos and thanking the uniformed Sailors, Airmen, Soldiers and Marines for their service. The final player to come in and greet the military was the Redskins star quarterback, Robert Griffin III, better known as “RG3.” After signing a few autographs and being part of an organized group photo, he took a selfie with as many service members who could fit in the frame. Griffin later posted the photo to social media sites, where he said, “Thank y’all for coming out to practice and most of all for serving your country.” “I got to stand right behind RG3 for the official photo and also was right there for his Instagram photo,” Rosetta said. “It was really cool to see him post that. All of my friends and family were very jealous.”

The Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) completed a two day port visit to Batumi, Georgia, Aug. 20. Vella Gulf’s mission in the Black Sea is to work with NATO allies and European partners, demonstrating the United States’ commitment to strengthening and improving interoperability while working toward mutual goals in the region. While in Batumi, Vella Gulf provided guided tours, hosted a reception for Georgian dignitaries and conducted a joint training event. Vella Gulf participated in a flag signaling exercise with the Georgia Coast Guard following her departure. The reception, which was held on Vella Gulf’s flight deck Aug. 18, hosted distinguished guests including Prime Minister of the Republic of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, and U.S. ambassador to Georgia, Richard Norland. A day of joint training exercises with the Georgian Coast Guard and guided tours followed. The training focused on visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) tactics, damage control, and NATO flag signaling. The VBSS training focused on different techniques for boarding and clearing a target ship, as well as how to detain and search a suspect. Following the VBSS training, flag signaling training was held on the ship’s bridge. Quartermaster 2nd Class Todd Marriot trained Georgian sailors how to communicate between ships using the standardized NATO flag signaling system. “This was my first time training sailors from another country,” said Marriot. “It was an honor for me to show them what we do, not only so they can learn from us, but so we can learn from them.” During damage control training, Georgian sailors observed the proper use of the U.S. Navy firefighting ensemble and pipe patching techniques. They also toured damage control central, the nerve center of Vella Gulf’s damage control operations. Damage Controlman 1st Class Jon Gerringer said even though there was a small language barrier, he feels the training was productive and was glad to work with the Georgian Coast Guard. After the training, the Minister of Defense for the Republic of Georgia, Iraklii Alasania, was welcomed aboard for a private tour of Vella Gulf. The port visit culminated in a signaling exercise following Vella Gulf’s departure. The Georgian Coast Guard patrol ships Tsonte Dadiani (P-101) and General Mazniashvili (P102) participated. All vessels cruised in a line, 500 yards abreast, and communicated with each other, sending and receiving messages using only flags. “The (exercise) conducted today with the Georgian Coast Guard was a great opportunity to reinforce the important training,” said Capt. Robert Katz, Vella Gulf’s commanding officer. “A dedicated relationship with partners such as Georgia demonstrates our commitment to the collective stability and security of the Black Sea.” Vella Gulf, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, is conducting naval operations with allies in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in order to advance security and stability in Europe. U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency pertners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

U.S. service members supporting Southern Partnership Station 2014 (SPS-JHSV 14) met with Jose Antonio Lopez Arevalo, the mayor of Puerto Barrios, and Edgar Castelain, the minister of public works, to conduct subject matter expert exchanges (SMEE) Aug. 6. The purpose of the meeting was for the SPS-JHSV 14 medical team to discuss best practices in preventive medicine regarding the city of Puerto Barrios. “We are aware [that] just because it’s our way doesn’t mean it is the way, just one of many,” said Lt. Cmdr. Suzanne Maldarelli, medical officer in charge of SPS-JHSV 14 ashore. “We are always eager to share what works and what doesn’t work.” The mayor explained how the city’s electricity, water, and sanitation are each operated. The meeting transitioned into a discussion about the current renovation of the city library project, where the mayor spoke about how appreciative he is of the Guatemalan and U.S service members. “I wouldn’t be able to do anything without the commitment of my people,” said Arevalo. “There is not a word I can say that describes how proud I am of them.” Throughout the discussion U.S service members and Guatemalan officials shared their best practices, which will be followed up by future engagements. These engagements will continue the partnership between the civil authorities of Puerto Barrios and the SPS-JHSV 14 mission.

Ribbon cutting ceremony held for wounded warrior’s sanctuary hall By Regina Adams Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington Public Affairs
WASHINGTON
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held for the Transient Wounded Warrior Lodge and Parking Structure at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Aug. 18. Transient Wounded Warrior Lodge, known as Sanctuary Hall, was built to house wounded warriors while they receive long term medical care. “We are so pleased to be cutting the ribbon on what will be our nation’s newest facility to accommodate such a precious resource, our wounded warriors,” said Capt. Tony Edmonds, commanding officer for Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington. “God bless everyone who ever resides in this facility.” The Transient Wounded Warrior Lodge is a 135,000 square foot, multi-story building that consist of 200 rooms
and common areas. There are administrative offices, an entertainment area, a cafe and lounge, housekeeping areas, and public restrooms. The facility is fully accessible for the physically disabled. The five-level, 161,000 square foot parking garage has space for 470 vehicles and is located adjacent to the lodge. Unique to this facility is the green roof of Wing C, which provides a place for Wounded Warriors to enjoy outdoor televisions, pool tables, foosball table and a putting green. The facility was designed specifically to encourage interaction among the wounded warriors around the lodge and installation. “It was absolutely a privilege and honor for us to be entrusted with the planning, design, and construction of this facility for wounded warriors and their families,” said Edmonds. The $62 million contract was awarded as a joint venture contract to DCK and Tetra Tech Torso September, 2011.

Dogs on Deployment helps military members keep pets while away By Cathy Heimer Jet Observer
Bailey, a four-year-old English Mastiff and Saint Bernard mix, was rescued by Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Scott in May 2013. Living in a crate most of the day, the nearly 100 pound dog had also been abused and was skittish about new people. With his big heart for dogs, Scott knew he had to take her in but he also knew he was leaving Hampton Roads for an upcoming overseas deployment in 2014. The single airman, stationed with F Flight of the 633d Logistics Readiness Squadron at Joint Base Langley–Eustis, began looking at the very limited options for a temporary home for Bailey, because he was not willing to surrender her to shelter, especially after rescuing her. “I was going to spend whatever I had to spend to have Bailey boarded somewhere local, even though she still dislikes kennels,” Scott explained in an email to the Jet Observer Aug. 17. Fortunately Scott found Dogs on Deployment or DoD, a national nonprofit group with local volunteers, which was founded to help military members who are deploying or attending temporary schools where they are not able to take their beloved pets with them. “I heard about DoD from a friend that also has a big dog and knew I was deploying,” explained Scott. Requesting assistance through DoD’s Facebook page, Scott was connected to Jenn Mango, a volunteer interested in fostering a pet. As expected, volunteers are passionate about their pets. Many are active duty, prior military or a military spouse. Mango, Bailey’s “foster mom,” served as a helicopter mechanic in the Army and now works in the contracting office at Fort Eustis and also volunteers for a local SPCA. “Because I’m prior service, I know what you go through, having to find somewhere to take your pets, not being able to take your pets into apartments or if you have to go to school. It’s a great opportunity for me to help other people, even though I’m not in the military anymore,” she explained. While in the Army, Mango owned five dogs — two Chihuahuas and three dachshunds. “Imagine how rough that was trying to find someone to take them. It takes commitment,” she said. It took Mango nearly a year after registering on DoD’s website to foster a pet. It wasn’t for lack of requests but “I wasn’t ready to have the commitment to another dog in my life,” she said. But when she received an email about Bailey, she knew she was ready. Despite Bailey’s size, Mango laughs about how Isabella, her 10-year-old Chihuahua, is the boss at her house. “The little one

Shawn Johnson needed to find a temporary home for JD, a “completely beloved and spoiled Australian Shepherd,” as Sieber-Johnson describes him on the DoD website. She was being sent to a six-month school and Shawn was being deployed. Nearly out of options, they were lucky enough to find a family member to take JD while she was in the Marine Corps Basic School in Quantico, Va. Knowing many other military members were in the same situation without anyone to rely on, they started the program in June 2011. In the days prior to his deployment and her beginning school, they set up a simple website and Facebook page, her father bought the domain name for them, and “Dogs on Deployment” was born. Alisa, a Marine Corps aviator, serves as the president, with Shawn, a Navy helicopter pilot, as vice president. In just three short years, DoD has grown to locations across the country, including Hampton Roads, where Myra Ann Smith volunteers as the Norfolk coordinator. “We don’t want our military members to be deployed overseas and to other specialized training where they can’t take their pets and can’t find somebody to take care of them,” said Smith. “We want them to be able to go to a temporary home and when the service member comes back, they are reunited with their family.” While the name implies they only take dogs, they also help find temporary homes for cats, birds, even a ferret and a rabbit, if someone is in need. DoD also has several secondary missions. They can offer “Pet Chit Financial Assistance Requests” to military members E-6 and below, and veterans on a case-by-case basis, to assist with relocating expenses, such as air travel when moving to a new duty station, quarantines required for some foreign countries or for their pet’s medical emergencies. The organization also promotes healthy pet lifestyles, including up-to-date vaccinations and spaying and neutering. Smith, who began volunteering in May, has about 10 active local volunteers, who help with a variety of tasks. Just this past weekend, Smith and several volunteers par-

While DoD educates people about what they do, Smith also uses the events to look for volunteers, especially those willing to foster a pet. Right now, Smith only has two people who are boarding pets and could use more individuals or families. Temporary home requests regularly pop up on the group’s website and Facebook page. “Sometimes, it’s a pair of animals that a family is trying to keep together. “We’re hoping if we get the word out [about DoD] it’s going to cut down on the number of pets that go to shelters,” said Smith. Many volunteers bring years of community service with other organizations with them. “I’m a big volunteer person and I’ve always enjoyed volunteering and for years and years, volunteered with the Red Cross, Hampton Roads chapter,” explained Smith,

who assisted in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and other disasters. A self-described “Air Force brat,” Smith also loves her dog, “Sophie,” a Lhasa Apso. She got involved with DoD after seeing a reunion of a military member and their dog on a TV talk show. She contacted Sarah, the regional DoD director, who was looking for a Norfolk coordinator. While her title says Norfolk, the area stretches from just before Charles City County up to the Eastern Shore, all of Hampton Roads, out to Franklin and into northeast North Carolina. It’s a big responsibility for someone whose day job involves helping people. As the treatment coordinator for the Hampton–Newport News Community Services Board, Smith oversees counselors working with clients. “Dogs give you unconditional love. There’s no strings attached to anything,” Smith laughed. “I’ve always had dogs, and we’ve moved from place to place to place and base to base to base.” While DoD provides a template for a foster arrangement, Smith said, “Expenses are worked out between the parties. They talk with each other, meet with each other, assuming they’re local, to work out an arrangement for emergencies, all kinds of things.” Smith addressed potential volunteers’ fear that they will get too attached to their foster pet and be too hard to give up. “It’s not supposed to be permanent … It’s supposed to be a temporary situation,” she said about DoD. Volunteers should be people who have a real interest in pets and their welfare and “who want to give back to the community,” said Smith. “This is a way of being able to serve, even though we’re not military.” “I am very happy that I found DoD and was connected with Jenn,” said Scott in his email, who was very pleased to see photos for this story of Bailey settled in with Mango and her dog.

Michael Macinski during a ceremony conducted at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Aug. 22. Rear Admiral Terry Moulton, Commander, Navy Medicine East, Portsmouth, presided over the ceremony. In his remarks, Moulton cited the leadership and accomplishments of both participants as well as the tremendous impact that NMCPHC’s contributions have on Navy and Marine Corps mission readiness. “The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center is the public health expert,â€? said Moulton. “From supporting our Nations wounded, ill, and injured to monitoring and improving the environment that our Sailors and Marines work and live in every day. Baby shower for military moms-to-be NORFOLK
The non-profit group Operation Shower will help bring joy to 36 military moms-to-be when it partners with 41’s First Mates to host a group baby shower in their honor Aug. 28, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Vista Point Center at Naval Station Norfolk. All of the moms being honored are the spouses of deployed Sailors aboard the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the 10th and final Nimitzclass super carrier of the United States Navy. The ship is named for the 41st President of the United States and former Director of Central Intelligence George H.W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. Jamie Story Kohlmann, Miss Texas 2004 – who is the pregnant wife of F/A-18 U.S. Navy pilot Lt. Ben Kohlmann, will serve as guest host of the shower, which will feature a “Fox in Silly Socks” theme in homage to President Bush’s love of funny socks. The shower will include lunch, raffle prizes, and the highlight of the event, the presentation of Operation Shower’s signature “Shower In A Box” to each of the moms – gifts of high-quality products for mothers and babies

When mommy (or daddy) goes back to school in a military family, all hell can break loose at home. It is a Law of Nature, people. In order to add big things to family life, something’s got to give. You as a student need time to go to class if you are going to a bricks and mortar school or to participate in the class online if you are pursuing an online education. You need time to listen to lectures, to read the assignments, to write, and to think. I personally needed a lot of hours set aside to despair and eat brownies. If your family is sending the musthave-parent back to school this year, expect that they will be all cheery and encourage-y at first. When the stress rolls in and the laundry isn’t done and hotdogs are what’s for dinner (again) expect them to be grouchy and complain-y for a while. This is really OK, back to school mommy. I swear. It is just a stage we all go through

before we start to adapt. It is not a sign that you shouldn’t have gone back to school. Here are some ways military spouses arranged their family schedule so that they had more time: 1. Frame it as a “me” and a “we.” So much depends on the way back to school is framed in a family. “I do think it’s important to frame your education as both a “me” thing and a “we” thing,” said Army wife Randi Cairns. “Mommy/daddy is working on improving skills/experience, etc. to be better at her job/offer more value/ contribute to the family’s resources.” Going back to school is something mommy or daddy is doing on their own for the good of the family. Randi also points out that the message that we are a family that values education is also being demonstrated through your own example. Studying at the same table where your kids are doing their homework was also a lifehack offered by more than one back to school mommy. 2. Figure out what matters to them. When I went back to school, I found that my kids didn’t care whether I attended every lacrosse game or watched every swim lesson. They didn’t mind babysitting their brother or running errands or emptying the dishwasher–but they cared about the food. Chicken nuggets did not qualify as dinner. Take out was good one or two nights a week, but if we hit three in a single week they grumbled a lot. My freezer was my best friend. By cooking
larger amounts, I could freeze things and have a dinner ready to go for those days I did not have time to cook. Chili or beef stew or chicken casserole frozen three weeks ago tastes just as homey as the stuff you make today. Teenagers can be fooled. 3. Get your kids to “bed” earlier. “I did my homework at midnight when they were all asleep,” said Navy wife Michele Galvez. Many military spouses have told me that the best time to study was in the evening after the kids were in bed. So how about putting the kids to bed a little earlier to max out that study time? They don’t have to be asleep, just in their pajamas and in their beds for quiet reading time. They have Ninja Turtle books in their rooms. You have Organic Chemistry in yours. Its all good. 4. Zone your day and your week. Certain times of day and the week are more productive than others. Everyone has a different internal clock. Put an eye on yours. When I went back to school, I found out that no one in my family minded if I spent Saturday mornings at Starbucks doing school work. They missed me if I was gone in the afternoon, but that gorgeous weekend morning was mine all mine. Your best time of day may be evenings or late Sunday afternoon. Block that time out on your calendar and don’t schedule anything during that time. Or let yourself wonder what is happening on Facebook. 5. Lower your expectations. As a military spouse and musthave-parent, you are probably one of those people with very high standards about how things SHOULD be done. You are probably “shoulding” all over yourself right this very minute. That doesn’t always serve you very well. Marine wife Denise Wood remembers when her husband was at work all day and getting his Masters degree four nights a week. Denise was also knocking out her degree taking 21 hours at a time, including

night classes. Denise says that for nine months their kids survived on Little Caesar’s pizza, “My kids are 20 and 23 and still are burned out on pizza,” she laughed. 6. Mine your service member. Many spouses said that their service member was very encouraging about going back to school. “My husband is the one that motivated me to go back to school and he was aware of the changes that needed to be made, said Air Force wife Verenice Castillo, founder of Military Spouse Advocacy Network. Her husband now cooks on the weekends. The whole family cleans the house on Saturday mornings while Saturday afternoon is family time. “During the week, I cook, the boys help with dishes, my husband cleans the rest of the kitchen and I do laundry. It is crazy but we still find time to sit on the table at the same time (most of the time) and talk about our day.” Have your service member tell you what they want to do to help you finish your goals. Even deployed service members can help by offering encouragement and support long distance—and they do. 7. Get up to speed by Christmas. One of the things I noted while talking to military spouses was how often these changes did not happen overnight in a family. Calm and firm requests combined with ongoing effort at school went a long way toward making change happen. “I went back to school a couple of years ago and it was hard at the beginning,” said Verenice. “My kids and husband had to help more around the house and other responsibilities in order for me to get some time for school. The future amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) transited the Strait of Magellan Aug. 19-20 on her maiden transit, “America Visits the Americas.” This journey of 365 nautical miles is very rarely transited by U.S. Navy ships because the majority go through the Panama Canal. The Strait, known for its panoramic views of snow-capped mountains, can be both breathtaking and dangerous. As the ship made its way through, the cold weather and rough seas that frequent this region kept the crew on their toes. “America’s forecasting team
used all available resources to ensure the safe navigation of the ship and to support sensitive shipboard tilt-rotor flight operations,” said Lt. Kyle Franklin, America Meteorology and Oceanic Center officer. “During the transit, we experienced near freezing temperatures combined with rain, sleet and mist.” Officers of the deck and navigation team members on the bridge of America had to pay particular attention throughout the transit to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew. In some instances they collaborated with Chilean navy sailors embarked aboard who were more familiar with maneuvering in the area. “It was [interesting and eye opening to work] with the
Chilean pilots,” said Quartermaster 2nd Class Amy Birkholz, quartermaster of the watch during the transit. “One of them showed me how to use visual bearings, such as lights and day markers, to navigate the Strait.” For those aboard, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to transit the southernmost point of continental South America. “I’ve never made this cruise, but I’ve spoken with people who have,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Leah Wolfcale, who heard the announcement and went topside to see the view. “It’s truly more majestic than I had imagined.” Prior to entering the strait, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Michael Hammer,

Edmer Vargas, Second Battalion commander. “The troops from both sides really had fun on the court.” During the course of a volleyball match, players are required to serve, pass, set, attack, block and dig the ball. Playing on the court requires flexibility, good balance, upper and lower body strength and speed. “I enjoyed the matches with the Guatemalan service members,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Latese Smith. “It was a fantastic friendship building event, but I really like that there were alot of fans, players, and friends from both sides out here to support the tournament.” U.S. and Guatemalan service members enjoyed the partnership building event and good music. “It was a good experience playing on the court with the Guatemalans,” said Explosive Ordnance Disposal 2nd Class Daniel Bracken. “I really enjoyed how much effort they put into setting up the tournament and inviting us out here to participate in it.” U.S. and Guatemalan service members are scheduled to subject matter expert exchanges until late August when the Military Sealift Command Joint High-Speed Vessel USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1) will return to reload and transport service members to Honduras and continue the SPS-JHSV 14 mission.

Winners of the fiscal year (FY) 2013 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Environmental Awards competition were recognized today via a video teleconference (VTC) ceremony at the Pentagon. Twenty-seven winners were selected in 10 categories including Natural Resources Conservation, Environmental Quality, Sustainability, Environmental Restoration, Cultural Resources Management, and Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition. “Environmental stewardship is important for the Navy on many levels,” said CNO Adm. Jonathan Greenert. “How we respond to our environment is what Americans see - did we take the time to care? If we can’t get the environmental aspect of our ranges right, we’ll never get them built and operating. And once we retire, what we leave behind is how we contributed to our environment that is important for the future.” This is the second time the awards ceremony has been held via VTC. Prior to 2013, the ceremony took place annually at the U.S. Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center in Washington, D.C. During his remarks at the event, Vice Adm. Phil Cullom, deputy CNO for fleet readiness and logistics (N4), mentioned the environmental and fiscal advantages of conducting the ceremony virtually. “We’re leveraging some innovative thinking and technology to provide recognition that’s much deserved, but also saving time and travel dollars while reducing our carbon footprint,” said Cullom.

Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert O. Work visited Guam during a multinational Asia-Pacific tour and held an all hands call to address service members’ questions aboard Naval Base Guam (NBG) Aug. 19. “The purpose of the trip is to strengthen multilateral security cooperation in the region, build more robust partnerships and discuss ongoing efforts and regional security matters,” Work said. Work is overseeing the implementation of the department’s enhancements to America’s military presence in the Asia-Pacific region with a particular emphasis on U.S. posture in Guam, Japan and Korea. Work’s visit supports Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel’s commitment to the re-balance and to strengthening U.S. relationships in the Asia-Pacific with allies and partners. “As the undersecretary of the Navy, I was here when we first started thinking about re-balancing to the Pacific,” Work said, referring to his previous

Australia and our other partners in the region,” Work said. “We’re going to have sixty percent of the Navy out in the Pacific and we’re going to have sixty percent of our combat air forces out in the Pacific.” In addition to addressing approximately 100 Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and Marines during the all hands call, he toured military facilities on NBG, Andersen Air Force Base, Marine Corps Air Combat Element infrastructure and several projects at Apra Harbor to examine how the rebalancing effort is continuing on Guam. “As far as the Asia-Pacific goes, Marines are being distributed around the Pacific. Five thousand Marines are going to come here to Guam, two-thousand-five-hundred Marines are going to Australia, some Marines are going back to Hawaii and about three-thousand-five-hundred Marines are going up to Iwakuni, [Japan],” Work said. He added that seven of the world’s largest armies are in the Asia-Pacific region and that the soldiers would be instrumental in contributing to the training efforts in the region. His regional tour will continue with stops in Japan and South Korea.

The Defense Department has expressed its concern to Chinese diplomatic officials about an Aug. 19 incident in which an armed Chinese fighter jet conducted a dangerous intercept of a U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby told reporters Aug. 22. The aircraft was on a routine mission when the intercept took place over the Pacific Ocean about 135 miles east of Hainan Island in international airspace, Kirby said. “We have registered our strong concerns to the Chinese about the unsafe and unprofessional intercept, which

He served as an Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class aboard the Saratoga, 1982-1984. “Like all the other older carriers, it’s time for her to meet her demise,” he said. “She served proudly for a long time,” said Mitchell Abood, 48, of Belchertown, Mass. Joe Roberts, an explosives safety specialist at NAVSTA Newport, served aboard the Saratoga during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield. Roberts recalled his service saying, “there is a bit sadness that the Saratoga will never be seen again.” The Navy competitively awarded the contract on May 8, 2014 to ESCO Marine of Brownsville, Texas, for the towing, dismantling and recycling of conventionally powered aircraft carriers stricken from the Naval Vessel Register. As part of the planning process for the relocation, teams from Naval Sea Systems Command Inactive Ships and ESCO Marine arrived at NAVSTA Newport to assess the condition of the vessel and prepare the work plan. On Aug. 13, after viewing long range forecasts and doing final equipment checks, the date was set to relocate the ship on Aug. 20. NOAA meteorologists checked the forecast throughout the Atlantic seaboard since the ship would depart Newport then head south to Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico prior to her final destination. A low pressure system off the coast of West Africa caused the original plan to be delayed for safety. On the original day of the movement, the teams met again at 4 p.m. for an extensive review of weather patterns. A decision was made to re-evaluate the forecast at 2 a.m. Checking that forecast proved the “GO” for the operation as the weather system that

Greenert emphasizes in the document that everything sailors and civilians do must be grounded in the responsibility of warfighting first. He says the Navy must be able to achieve access in any domain and possess the capability mix of kinetic and non-kinetic weapons to prevail today
and be ready to win tomorrow. He provided a list of capabilities that center on this objective and followed with a comparable list of items that support operate forward and be ready. Additionally, the Navigation Plan summarizes the six programmatic priorities that guided the Navy’s budget planning for the future of the fleet: maintaining sea based strategic deterrent, sustaining a global forward presence, preserve the means for victory against aggressors, focus on readiness afloat and ashore, enhance asymmetric capabilities in physical domains as well as in cyberspace and electromagnetic spectrum and sustain a relevant industrial base.

The ceremony was part of the partnership between the U.S. military and USA Basketball. That partnership “brings together members of the best military in the world with members of the best basketball teams in the world,” Dempsey said. The dog tags feature the United States’ flag and a three-word inscription on the bottom: leadership, service, teamwork. The back of the tag has the player’s name and other data. The second dog tag features the name of a Soldier, Airman, Marine, Sailor, or Coast Guardsman next to the player’s name, “so they can remember at this moment in time, the United States military wished them not only good luck but also expressed our pride in them for representing our country,” Dempsey said. Representing the United States is a big responsibility, the chairman said. “I still remember to this day the first time I put on the uniform and on our utility or daily uniform over your left breast pocket it’ll say United States Army or United States Navy or United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force,” Dempsey said. “I can only imagine the first time these … young men, pull that jersey on with USA emblazoned on the front,” he added. “That’s got to mean something.” Dempsey and NBA Commissioner Silver are looking to build the current “Hoops for Troops” program into the “Commitment to Service” program. This program calls for service members and basketball players around the country to “commit together to do something in the communities around which these bases are built,” the chairman said. “One of the things the commissioner has always said, the reason we have become so close, their organization and ours, is that they actually are committed not just to winning games, not just to financial gain,” Dempsey said. “It’s a business, right, but also to developing these young men. And I’ve got to tell you, this is an extraordinary opportunity for them to develop as young men.”

More than 1,000 runners participated in the 11th annual “Run with the Chiefs” 5k at Naval Station Norfolk (NSN), Aug. 22. Chief petty officers (CPO), senior chief petty officers, master chief petty officers, CPO selectees and participants throughout the region ran in support of the 2015 CPO selectees and to celebrate CPO pride and camaraderie. “The purpose is for chief petty
officers to show their pride and to get to know the selectees,” said amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) Command Master Chief Keith A. Webb. “There’s some competition and it supports physical fitness as well.” The event was part of the sixweek indoctrination process, known as CPO 365, to teach CPO selectees lessons in naval history and chief heritage, while also introducing them to the responsibilities of being a chief petty officer.

Grammy-award winning American rock band Train will headline the post-race concert at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Festival in Virginia Beach on Sunday, August 31, 2014. In conjunction with the American Music Festival, more than 20,000 participants and music fans from around the world will commemorate the day’s accomplishments at the beachfront concert celebration. Festival weekend will also feature headline bands including Hunter Hayes, Creedence Clearwater Revisited and Blues Traveler on the 5th Street Main Stage throughout Labor Day Weekend. “Labor Day weekend visitors and Hampton Roads residents come back year after year not only to see the talented performers at the American Music Festival, but also to take part in the challenge and festivities surrounding the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon,” said Michael Paul, Event Manager. “Train
is a fan favorite and will surely offer a memorable evening of celebration for the participants and spectators.” Train is set to release their seventh studio album, “Bullet Proof Picasso,” on September 16, 2014. The Grammy-award winning band will perform songs from their new album, including the recently released “Angel in Blue Jeans,” along with musical favorites such as “Drops of Jupiter,” “Calling All Angels,” and “Hey, Soul Sister,” among others. The band’s last album “California 37” debuted at Number 4, the fourth consecutive Top 10 album, and spawned five hit singles including the worldwide chart-topping “Drive By.” All Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Festival participants receive free entry into the concert by presenting their race number at the door, and volunteers also enjoy a complimentary evening of entertainment as thanks for their support. Festival weekend kicks off on Friday, Augustw 29 with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The expo is free and open to the public and features more than 100 exhibitors offering nutritional samples and showcasing the latest in running gear and fitness apparel. New this year is a one-mile beach run on Saturday followed by Sunday’s events which include the half marathon, a twoperson half marathon relay and a 5K. The event concludes with a finish line party and the Sunday night concert in partnership with the American Music Festival.

The first thing Rafael Dos Anjos said after his stunning first-round stoppage of former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson Saturday at the BOK Center reflected the thoughts of fight fans around the world. “I have no words,” said the Brazilian contender, who scored the biggest win of his career in the UFC Fight Night main event. It was quick and it was shocking, but now the 155-pound title contenders’ club has a new member, and he’s ready for whatever is next. “Benson Henderson is a great champion, I respect him a lot, but this is my time,” said Dos Anjos, who has now won seven of his last eight. Henderson was throwing hard and often to open the bout, and you could hear the landed shots clearly at Octagonside. Dos Anjos didn’t shy away from the contact though, and he remained in the pocket, firing off kicks to let Henderson know that he was still there. And suddenly, the Brazilian struck with a right flying knee that dropped Henderson. The Arizonan sought a takedown in response but came up empty. As he rose, Henderson ate a left hand and fell to the canvas. After a couple follow-up shots, referee John McCarthy intervened, halting the fight at the 2:31
mark. The run, aside from being part of the CPO selectee indoctrination, is part of CPO Heritage month, which is dedicated to celebrating chiefs, remembering their heritage and instilling pride in chiefs, CPO selectees and fellow Sailors. “CPO Heritage month is a good tradition to have,” said Wilson. “I think it should be a year-round tradition to keep that mentorship, that guidance, that leadership going.CPO Heritage month also teaches Sailors the value of a chief petty officer and the honor in being selected. “Becoming a chief was probably one of the biggest accomplishments of my naval career,” said Wilson. “I wish everybody could have this experience and achieve the rank of chief petty officer.” Chief Hospital Corpsman (select) Mandy Broderick said that the best way to rise to the rank of chief petty officer is to work hard and go to sea duty. “Stay motivated, work hard, don’t let small things get you down and have variety in your commands,” said Broderick. “Don’t be afraid to put in long hours and always stay positive.” The Navy wide pinning ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 16.

Joey Logano, who has seen his Sprint Cup career revitalized since a switch last year from Joe Gibbs Racing to Team Penske, got his third win of the 2014 season on Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway in a grueling race that seemed to sap the energy from even the most athletic drivers. The win capped a phenomenal weekend for Team Penske, as Logano’s Sprint Cup teammate Brad Keselowski finished second in the Cup race and won Thursday’s Camping World Truck Series race in his own truck. A third teammate, Ryan Blaney, won Friday’s Nationwide Series race. Logano got his first Bristol win, and the sixth of his Cup career, by holding off both the Toyota of Matt Kenseth – the car he drove at Gibbs – and Keselowski in the closing laps. Kenseth inherited the lead by staying on the track when Logano and the rest of the leaders made their final pit stops, but Logano passed him with nine laps remaining, then raced away from Keselowski to get the win. Logano was ecstatic afterward. “I feel like the Bristol Night Race is maybe the third or fourth biggest race of the year – just the at-

I’m going to enjoy tomorrow. But Monday sounds good.” Logano said his strong runs this season are due in large part to the
positive chemistry between himself, crew chief Todd Gordon and the rest of the No. 22 team. He said a lot of their success on race days can be traced back to their preparation during pre-race practice. “We really understand what we need to race well, and that’s the way we practice,” Logano said. “And it shows up when it comes game time in the race. This whole 22 team – and all of Penske – is always looking for that next bit. No one is just doing their job and saying … that’s enough. They’re always looking for that extra little bit at how they can ... make our race car better, and that’s what it takes.” Todd Gordon further explained the importance of getting cars tuned just right in practice. “We understand what we have to have in practice to be successful come race time, and I feel like that’s something that’s separated last year from this year,” he said. “We know the balance we’re looking for. We know what we’re looking for. We’re not necessarily the fastest car in practice, and that was true [at Bristo]. We battled through practice and did a lot of things, but we got to the end of it. The car was driving the way we needed it to drive to be successful come race time, and I think that showed [in the race]. When we

got to lapped traffic, we could really hustle through it.” Logano acknowledged that the results of regular-season races like Saturday’s at Bristol aren’t always good indicators of success in the Chase, because teams like the No. 48 Chevrolet of six-time champion Jimmie Johnson, who finished fourth at Bristol, seem to be able to significantly improve their performance once the 10-race run to the championship cranks up. Then there’s Logano’s teammate Keselowski, who, like Logano, Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., has three regular-season wins and momentum on his side. “I know it’s a different Chase format than normal, but you see guys kind of run so-so and then all of a sudden the Chase starts, and they pick it up a notch,” Logano said. “You never know what’s going to happen, and it’s new for everybody what’s going to happen.”
Logano said one of the keys for him to have success in the Chase is to continue working closely and sharing information with Keselowski, even though the two will be racing for the same grand prize. “From a driver’s standpoint, I think both Brad and myself understand that we need to work together to be able to run well, right,” he said. “It’s our responsibility right now to make sure we race each other right, make sure we still share our information, because the moment we stop doing that ... the performance will go away. “I think we both understand that – that if we grow apart from each other, we’re not going to be running first and second anymore; we’re going to be racing for 15th and 16th, and we don’t want that. “Brad says it all the time, and I say it, too – I’d much rather finish second to Brad than beat him and finish 14th. That’s the attitude we’ve got to keep throughout this whole thing.”

Directions: Place avocado in a medium bowl with yogurt, dijonnaise and lemon juice and mash together with a fork. Mash until creamy throughout. Chop eggs and stir them gently in the yogurt mixture. Some great sources of lean protein include nuts, low sodium deli meats and eggs. Spread almond butter on apple slices to give your child an extra source of protein before soccer practice. Portion control: Today, kids are trending toward three snacks a day so it’s important to keep snacks between 50 and 100 calories each. Many people think of allergies as a spring problem, but most sniffle sufferers know that fall can pose its own issues. Mold and ragweed are common fall allergy triggers, as well as dust mites, which are naturally more prevalent in the home during the drier months. “You can turn your home into a safe haven from fall allergens with regular, strategic cleaning and a few preventive measures,” says Robin Wilson, an interior design expert and an ambassador with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. To help make your home more comfortable this season, Wilson is offering some fall cleaning tips to eliminate allergens and maintain a clean and healthy space:
■ Wash your bedding. Mattress and pillow protectors will help control dust mites. As an added precaution, wash your bedding in warm or hot water every month and replace
pillows every three years. ■ Check for mold. Moisture breeds mold, so make sure to scan the inside of dishwashers, under the fridge in the water pan and in sink and bath drains. Change water dispensers and icemaker filters on a regular basis. ■ Vacuum frequently. Whether you have wall-to-wall carpeting, tile or hardwood floors, it’s important to eliminate dust and dirt. Vacuum, mop or steam clean flooring regularly. “Use a vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, which captures small particles such as allergens, irritants and pollutants,” says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic MC-UL429 Vacuum has a HEPA filter and accessories that allow you to be more thorough and get into tight corners. This vacuum also comes
with an attachment that pulls pet hair – another potential allergen – out of upholstered surfaces. ■ Wash or freeze stuffed toys. If your child sleeps with their favorite stuffed animals, you should frequently wash or freeze them in a plastic bag for 48 hours. This will lower the level of dust mites which can trigger asthma and allergies. ■ Use Slipcovers. Slipcovers have come a long way in the last 10 years. Since they can be cleaned regularly and more easily than upholstery, consider using them on sofas and other furniture. ■ Keep ragweed outside. After spending time outside, have your child leave any clothing or sports equipment close to the entrance of the home to avoid tracking irritants throughout rooms. “Just because the pollen count isn’t through the roof doesn’t mean you can’t fall prey to allergies,” says Wilson. “With regular cleaning, you can manage the irritants in your home and make it a more breathable place.”

Also consider low-flush toilets and showerheads. Low-flush toilets use less than 1.6 gallons of water per flush and low-flow showerheads use up to 36 percent less water. Do you believe members of the military contribute a great deal to society? You’re not alone; a 2013 Pew Research Center opinion poll found that Americans of all ages and walks of life placed military service at the top of the list of 10 professions that do the most good. Unfortunately, scammers are abusing this widespread admiration and posing as members of the military in order to trick people into sending them money. By impersonating members of the military, scammers gain credibility and sympathy from well-intentioned Americans. The ploy is the latest variation of some familiar scams. Smart people fall prey to scams every day, says Western Union, a leading money transfer company. You can help protect yourself by remembering one important rule: never send money to anyone you haven’t already met in person, face to face. Western Union cautions consumers to be alert to these three common scams involving scammers who pose as members of the military: ■ The “emergency” scam - The con artist may claim he or she is stationed overseas, is about to be discharged from the service and needs money to help pay for his or her return to the U.S. Or, the scammer may concoct a different “emergency,” such as an urgent need to purchase something, help for their family, etc. They may even claim they will get reimbursed for the emergency expense and will repay you when they return home. It’s important to remember that the U.S. military pays to transport service members from overseas duty back to the U.S. ■ Online relationship scam - The victim meets the scammer online, not knowing the scammer is only pretending to be in the
military. The scammer will sometimes use pictures of actual military personnel to seem even more authentic. The crook cultivates online relationships and may even promise to marry the victim when he or she returns home from duty. After a time, the scammer begins asking the victim for money for travel or emergencies. The scammer may also promise to reimburse the victim when he or she returns home. ■ Internet purchase scam: The scammer impersonates a member of the military and posts items for sale on the Web. They may claim to be on duty and out of the country, urgently needing to sell the item. Wanting to help out a member of the military, victims wire money to the scammer and never receive the items they believe they have purchased. Another common variation is an offer to rent the military individual’s house while they are away on duty. Scammers contact victims through telephone, email, the Internet and snail mail, and their tactics change constantly. Learning about the most common types of fraud is the best way to help protect yourself from con artists, Western Union says. If you believe you’ve been a victim of fraud, act immediately; if the money transfer has not been paid you can receive a refund. Once the scammer picks up the funds, however, the money is gone and you may not receive a refund.
