T
he better halves of the Marine Corps are walking the runway of the birthday ball this season. “These women come from everywhere, and they understand fashion,” said Jean Nicholson, owner of J. Nicholson Women’s Apparel and Accessories in Jacksonville, N.C. “They don’t want something passé. They want something modern and current, and to look like the models in New York and Los Angeles.” With 30 years of fashion expertise, Nicholson assures the latest trends in cut, color and style are accessible without traveling outside the city limits.

“We only sell the most current styles, provide expert alterations and customer service, and we promise exclusivity,” she explained. “You’ll have the only dress in your chosen style at your event.” The newest fad in women’s evening wear is the asymmetrical cuts and shapes of the dresses, from necklines to sleeves. “The symmetry is just off the wall this year,” Nicholson exclaimed.
For first time birthday ball guests, she urged women not to skimp on cheaply made attire. “Good, quality designer dresses will cost you a pretty penny, but it’s not even a question of whether or not it’s worth it,” she said.

hen Gen. John A. Lejeune, 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps gave the order in 1921 for each command to recognize the founding of the military branch, including a summary of the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps, he probably didn’t realize the elaborate celebrations that would come in the following decades. It may have taken a few years to get the “ball” rolling, but soon Nov. 10 became the biggest birthday of the year for the boys (and ladies) in the dress blues. Although the auspicious occasion has taken on a life of its own, the evening continues to be wrought with traditions honoring both Corps and country. Guests of the ball will notice upon arrival an empty
table set for one. Draped in a black tablecloth with an inverted dinner setting, and a single lit candle, the blank identification tag represents every fallen comrade who can only celebrate with fellow service members in spirit. Typically, a toast followed by a moment of silence is given at the event. While some actions are more solemn than others, the Marine Corps also places significance on the fun stuff. No party is complete without a cake, and like everything else in the military, a specific order must be kept. The first piece of cake is always given to the oldest Marine present while the second piece is presented to the youngest Marine in attendance. continues on page 6

A major highlight of the annual ball is the birthday message from the current commandant. Either read or presented via video, the words of wisdom are embraced by each Marine and set the tone not only for the evening but the rest of the year. For the Marine Corps 235th birthday, Gen. James F. Amos, the 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, addressed his fellow service members, saying, “Our rich heritage of selfless service and fidelity to Nation and to one another lives on in all who currently wear The Eagle, Globe and Anchor –those who have answered the clarion call to duty with remarkable courage, dedication and unshakable resolve that Marines are so well known for. To all Marines – past and present – and especially to our families, I extend my deep gratitude for all you have done and all you continue to do.”

Simple, classic elegance Sometimes more is less in the world of accessories. If you prefer to be discreet with the jewelry and shoes you wear to the ball, try simple chain necklaces or bracelets with small charms. You can pair your necklace with matching earrings. F
rench designer Yves Saint-Laurent once said, “The most beautiful makeup of a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.” The annual Marine Corps Ball may celebrate the brave warriors but it shines on the beauty of their better halves. Though the occasion calls for a more classic than outrageous look, ladies are allowed to venture on the dramatic when it comes to their makeup.
The smoky eye look exudes sophistication and
sexiness. First, apply a dark eyeliner, black is always appropriate, along the top and bottom rims of the eye. If using liquid liner, try placing dots on the lash line and following them to ensure a straight line. Extend the liner past its typical path for a more dramatic, winged look. Next, choose your shades, applying the lighter on the eyelid and the darker in the crease. Use eye shadow powder instead of cream shadow as it allows for better blending. Finally, add mascara. To avoid spider lashes and clumps, take five seconds and wipe your mascara wand on a tissue or the back of your hand before approaching your lashes. The lack of superfluous product creates more op-
portunity to build volume without making a mess. If daring eye makeup isn’t on your to-do list, don’t worry. You can still turn heads with the proper pucker. Red is the go-to color for an evening out, but whether you choose a deep scarlet or a warm blush, you want the stain on your lips to stay on all night. Staying power is easier than you think. Apply your matte shade all over the lip area. Fold a tissue in half, place between your lips and blot by pressing down. Cover the color with loose or pressed powder until the lip has a flattened-look. Add another layer of lipstick, repeat the steps and end with a final layer of color. With these tips, your smooch will last longer than your shoes.

ilitary awards and medals exemplify the pride and determination of every Marine who bears them. Not given out lightly, awards and medals have been earned through hard work, dedication, sacrifice and leadership. Each medal is issued with an accompanying ribbon that can be worn on a ribbon rack when full-sized medals are not authorized for wear. Like everything else in the Marine Corps, the manner in which ribbons and medals are worn is highly regarded and heavily regulated. They must be properly mounted and displayed according to the Marine Corps Uniform Regulations. With the exception of decorations worn from the neck, medals must always be arranged in a horizontal line in a specific order. Medals must be worn in order of precedence starting at the wearer’s right and running left. The bottom edge of every medallion worn should be aligned. When wearing the evening dress uniform, miniature medals are required of all commissioned and staff noncommissioned officers. Miniature medals are reproductions of regular sized medals and must be worn as entitled. If only one medal is worn, it must be purchased through the Department of Defense supply system or purchased in miniature. Marines may choose to have their medals and ribbons professionally mounted, since the preci-

sion required in mounting is expensive. Jamie Horne, a Marine Corps veteran, understands the precision of mounting medals takes time and expert eyes. He has been mounting medals for several years. “Having medals mounted can be very expensive, depending on the number of medals and the times it has to be mounted,” explained Horne. “Marines have to have their medals mounted before each ball, which can get expensive, especially for highly-decorated service members.” When large medals are worn, all unit citations and other ribbons with no medal authorized will be worn centered over the right breast pocket, as according to the Marine Corps Uniform Regulations. Ribbon bars are typically worn in rows of three, with order of precedence running right to left. If more than one ribbon bar is necessary, order or precedence will run right to
left and top to bottom, perfectly aligned on each row. Female Marines may be allowed to wear rows of two, if the third ribbon will not lay flat against the jacket or is too close to the arm seam. “It gets incredibly tricky to place everything perfectly,” said Horne. “I have service members who don’t want to do it, so they send me their uniforms. I can get it done quickly and they can rest assured it is done correctly the first time. Nobody needs to get in trouble for something like that. We can take care of the issue.” Marines who need to have their medals mounted should seek assistance on professional mounting from the dry cleaning shop aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune or seek a professional mounter in the Jacksonville area. here’s an unspoken rule of the Marine Corps Birthday Ball regarding behavior. Don’t be the guy or gal everyone is talking about the next morning. Formal events like the ball bring out the best and the worst in people. While some are on their best conduct, others take the phrase “let loose” quite literally. Marines take the spotlight for the evening, but guests make their mark as well. To navigate your way through an important event such as the ball, it would behoove you to remember a few key rules. Understand who you are with and who they represent. Marines are the nation’s finest fighting force, and as their guests, you have a responsibility to show respect to the Corps, to your Marine and to yourself. Your behavior could help or hurt your spouse’s or date’s future career because even though everyone is encouraged to let their hair down, they are still among co-workers. A general rule of thumb to consider is if you wouldn’t do it in front of your 93-yearold grandma and her preacher, you probably shouldn’t do it at the ball. The previous statement also applies to your attire. It’s rare in today’s
society for a woman to have a reason to get dolled up, style her hair and live out a few hours of fairytale, but it’s no excuse to throw class out the window. Marilyn Monroe once said, “Your clothes should be tight enough to show you're a woman, but loose enough to show you're a lady.” It is possible to look sexy without revealing every secret of your figure. Your Marine should never have to explain your poor choices to his or her superiors. That being said, don’t be afraid to talk to people. The Marine Corps family is small so the connections you make at the ball could end up being lifelong friendships at your next duty station. Finally, under no circumstances should you or your date get drunk. Yes, the alcohol flows freer during jubilees, but even if everyone else is completely intoxicated, maintain your integrity. There is a place for everything, and an honorable event such as the ball is not the time to be a belligerent drunk. You want to remember the good time you had, make memories and avoid becoming the topic of Monday morning discussions. Stay classy Camp Lejeune.

ith ball season quickly approaching, many women are hitting the fitness centers in hopes of flattening their stomachs and toning trouble spots before sliding into their gowns for the special night. While Semper Fit offers many personal trainer options aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, some women find it difficult to get to the gym to meet with trainers. Understanding time is precious, the personal trainer instructors aboard MCB Camp Lejeune have several quick exercises designed to strengthen and tone from home or on the go. Kristie Myers, a personal training instructor with Semper Fit, Marine Corps Community Services, knows the use of body weight can be just as effective as expensive machines in the strengthening and toning process. “It takes between eight and 12 exercises to target the whole body for most people,” said Myers. “You can do most of them with small dumbbells or using your own body weight.” continues on page 19
Lunges Begin by standing with your feet together, straight and tall. Step forward with one leg and slowly bend your knee, keeping your body straight. Dip your back knee as far as you can go, hold your position, and then slowly return to your standing position.

Lateral lunges work the inner thighs and glute muscles. To perform a lateral lunge, start with both feet together, standing straight and tall. Step to the side and bend your knee, lunging toward the ground while keeping your spine straight. Hold your position for a moment, and then slowly return to your starting position. The lateral lunge can be done with dumbbells or without. If you plan to use handheld weights, make sure to keep your arms engaged, instead of letting them hang limply at your sides.

obody does pomp and circumstance like the Marine Corps and the Birthday ball seems like the perfect place to pull out all the stops. While some units choose to celebrate by holding their ball aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune or in surrounding areas such as Wilmington or Morehead City, other units choose to hold their balls in more extravagant locations, such as Las Vegas or New York City. Wherever the ball is held, one thing is certain – the host venue has been working hard to make sure everything is perfect. After all, nothing less than perfection is acceptable when you’re dealing with the Marine Corps. “After we are approached by units who want to host a ball through us, we present them with a catering menu to take back to their planning staff,” explained Wanda Colwell, head of Clubs and Catering services aboard MCB Camp Lejeune. Most host venues will immediately begin working with event planners to iron out all the details. From the theme to parking to lighting, no discussion falls on deaf ears of the venue staff. They work tirelessly before, during, and after the ball to ensure everything is seamless, leaving their guests free to simply enjoy the evening. “We always make suggestions for the units to use our support services, but they certainly do not have to,” said Colwell. “Once that is done, we start laying out the diagram and coordinating where people will sit, who will eat what meal and how we’re going to keep everything straight. Pushup While a pushup seems like a basic move to add to your fitness regime, it is far from easy. Laying on your stomach, lift yourself off the ground so all your weight rests on your hands and the balls of your feet. Slowly bend your elbows and lower yourself to the ground. Hold the position and then push your body up, keeping your spine straight and your backside from sticking out. For an easier method, put your knees on the ground before performing the pushup. Bent over row The bent over row exercise is designed to work the lattissimus dorsi, a littleknown muscle underneath the arm. To perform a bent over row, keep your dumbbells in hand and stay bent over, just as in the reverse fly position. hile celebrating another year of the United States Marine Corps is certainly cause to raise your glass in a toast, be careful not to overdo the festivities during ball season. It is common knowledge it only takes one alcoholic beverage to impair an individual’s ability to drive. The loss of depth perception, slowed reactions and lack of cognitive awareness can lead to dangerous situations. Marines are certainly some of the strongest individuals on the planet, but nobody is immune to the effects of alcohol. Service members who get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol run the risk of putting themselves and others in life-threatening situations. Along with threatening their own lives and the lives of those around them, their actions reflect on their unit and the entire Marine Corps. Marines who find themselves in need of assistance after consuming alcoholic beverages can use the Arrive Alive program aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The Arrive Alive program allows service members to use the cab company of their choice and return safely to base, where they will be taken to building 60, where the officer of the day will pay the cab fare and log the amount in a book. The Marine then has three days to pay back the amount for his cab fare.

“The (officer of the day) has a box with cash in it for each time he or she takes duty,” said Robert Collinsworth, the company CO for Company A, Headquarters and Support Battalion, MCB Camp Lejeune. “That money is specifically to handle things like that. There is enough money in the box to handle a cab fare from wherever they come from, even from Wilmington or Morehead City.” There is no punishment for service members who choose to use the Arrive Alive program, as long as they are of legal drinking age. “Arrive Alive was set up with our Marine’s best interest in mind,” explained Collinsworth. “It’s not designed to be a ‘we caught you’ game. It’s designed to say ‘Hey Marines, we care about you and we want to take care of you and make sure you’re okay’ type of thing.” Arrive Alive cards are available at your company office. They are free to pick up and list a number of cab companies who participate in the program aboard MCB Camp Lejeune. “Each unit has a stack of Arrive Alive cards at their disposal” said Collinsworth. “Marines can also pick up cards from their S3. Each card has a list of companies who will bring them on base.” To obtain an Arrive Alive card, Marines should contact their chain of command.

Many local retailers run specials on tux and suit rentals, so if you hit the mall at the right time, you may be able to get your alterations for free. Suit A slightly-less formal, though no less debonair choice for civilian males attending the ball is a suit. Suits, like tuxes, should be custom-tailored to fit the body correctly, and paired with a clean, pressed button-up shirt and tie. A bowtie or neck tie can be worn, but it is best to leave the wild prints at home. A suit looks snappy and business-oriented, but can still be comfortable enough to wear through the night, as long as it fits appropriately.
f you are Marine attending the ball, you already know what you’ll be wearing. Nothing says sharp and classic like a service member in uniform. ith the hustle and bustle of getting ready for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, some women tend to neglect an important part of their beauty routine – their fingernails. You don’t have to pay tons of money to shine up your easiest accessory.

Although applying bold colors, designs and even glitter should be left to the professionals, you can achieve a sexy, natural look right from home. Make sure to sterilize your tools before you begin. Wipe them down with alcohol, or pop your metal tools in the oven for 15 minutes, allowing time to cool before use. Resist the urge to file your nails when they’re wet. It could cause peeling or splitting. Instead shape them once they are completely dry. Next, soak your nails in a bowl of warm water. Add a small amount of bath salts to soften. Pat dry and apply cream, oil or lotion to keep the area soft. Take your pusher, line up with the cuticle and push back gently. Don’t be too aggressive. Finally, use a three to four sided buffer and take your time to smooth out each nail. Finish by buffing the edges where you filed earlier. The shine is unmatched and your nails will thank you for the break from heavy polish.

he ladies in the cosmetics department of the Marine Corps Exchange are not there only to present the latest wares in the world of glitz and glamour to the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune patrons. They are teachers in the craft of beauty, witnesses to the lives in the military community and friends to all who drop by. With powders of neutral and brightly colored hues,or with glossy or deep-matte shades of lipstick as their tools they can turn somebody’s day around, or give them the confidence to try something new. “We have spouses who come in while their husband is deployed,” said Debi Vincent, the business manager of a cosmetics shop aboard the base. “Sometimes they are looking to look nice for their husbands; other times they feel down, and I can make them feel better.” Vincent said she feels impacting self esteem in positive ways is the most important part of her job. “I like making people feel good about themselves,” said Vincent. “I can have a teenager come in who is afraid to look up but by the time I’m through with her she’s ready to go to school.” The make-up artists use skills garnered through their own experiences with makeup and their know-how in the world of art. Vincent was an interior designer before entering the world of cosmetics, and she met her colleague Colette “CoCo” Klotz in a flower arrangement class. “Whether you’re painting a face or painting a house, color
is color,” said Vincent. The makeup artists guide their patrons through whatever look they want, teaching techniques and tricks of the trade while they’re at it, whether it’s an understated look for work, a vivacious look for after-five, or how to transition between the two. Susan King, a patron of the cosmetics department, came to learn new techniques to use for her son’s wedding. “I came here before, and Debi does such a wonderful job,” continues on page 34

Story By Jessie Heath For most adults, the night of the Marine Corps birthday ball is a night out on the town. Filled with smiles and laughter, it provides service members and their significant others a chance to relax, lean back, and enjoy the evening together, away from the high-stress, fast-paced every day life of the Marine Corps. Before the evening can be enjoyed,
however, couples with children must first secure childcare for their tot. Luckily, the Child Development Centers aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune are there to help. Hourly childcare is available during the majority of birthday balls and can be easily secured by contacting the unit family readiness officer, who will help parents enroll or prepare their child for a night of fun during the ball. “Usually what happens is the unit sends in paperwork to the CDC,” explained Adrian Casdandda, a CDC employee. “The families can then call the unit and reserve a spot for the evening. Every child enrolled is paid for by the unit so families can enjoy the evening.” Before children can be enrolled for the night of the birthday ball, they must first have an enrollment application on file. “Parents can send snacks and toys in a small backpack, with their children,” explained Casdandda. “We have absolutely no problem with snacks, as long as they don’t include a peanut butter or peanut-butter by product, since so many kids have nut allergies.” For more information on childcare during the ball or to get an enrollment packet, visit www.mccslejeune.com/cdc or call 450-0553.

Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Christian, an administration instructor at Marine Corps Service Support Schools, visited the cosmetics department to explore new techniques and learn the latest in makeup trends. She visited before in her uniform and was there to try a more effervescent look to use when in civilian attire. “I’ve always loved makeup,” said Christian. “You can emphasize different aspects of your face. Makeup can make you look entirely different.” While in uniform she wears muted makeup and suggests her Marines do the same. “You can still be beautiful (in uniform),” said Christian. “You can still be a lady. You just have to keep it neutral and within regulations.” With endless possibilities available outside of work King suggested being open-minded. “Try the opposite of what you normally do,” said Christian. “If you typically wear something neutral try something bold.” Makeup is an adventure, Klotz added. “It’s a lot of fun. “If you don’t like it, we can always wash it off and try something else. It’s free and painless.” Makeup artists are available from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays, and Mondays and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at the main exchange. A bright turquoise lined the rim of her lower eyelid, a color she matched to the dress she wanted to wear for his reception. It was a change from her usual muted look. Another aspect of the visits King appreciates is the makeup artists’ honesty. “Instead of pushing me to new products they show me how to use the products I already have,” said King. But to the makeup artists it’s not about the bottles and powders lining their shelves. They are there to share in the community’s lives. Klotz spent more than a decade in the makeup business. She sees women come in to prepare for their weddings and later have children. She sees those children grow into teenagers. After 29 years as a military spouse, and as the mother of a sailor, she has a lot of experiences to help her relate to her clientele. “It’s hard to be a military spouse, taking care of children while your spouse is in harm’s way,” said Klotz, who speaks with a French accent peppered with her adopted home’s southern twang. “I’ve been there, done that. I feel like I can help people and touch their lives. We are here for support. We are a family. We laugh together, we cry together.” However, they are not just there for military spouses. They also cater to service members.
