The Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads has been serving the military community in our region since November 1889 and is one of only three charities with a special relationship with the US Department of Defense (DOD). One of 13 selfsustaining branches in the country, the Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads is a private, directly serves the active duty and their families stationed in the Hampton Roads region. However, they do not receive Federal, State, or DOD funding for their No-cost/Low-cost programs. In 2017 The Union Mission provided food, clothing, shelter and job and life skills training to 2,537 men, women and children in its shelters including 705 veterans and provided additional assistance to 4,785 individuals in the community. Leonard Cuffee (65) graduated from high school and joined the Marines in 1971 as a combat enstation was in Japan where joined the Marine Corps track team. He left the Marines in 1975 and served a year in the reserves. He returned home to live with his mother and enlisted in the Army as at Ft. Bragg, N.C. until 1981 until he was transferred to a base in Germany. While in Germany, he got married, had three children, now in their 30s, and returned to the states to Ft. Campbell, KY. He got out of the Army in 1983. He and his wife had separated by this time so he moved in with his grandmother and worked He returned to Virginia and lived with his mother and got a job with Dollar Tree where he worked for eight years and worked various other places until he got sick and was diagnosed with arthritis, HIV, Hepatitis 2 and prostate cancer. No lon-
ger able to work, when his mother passed away in 2015, he lost his home. He stayed with a friend for a while until in 2016 he turned to the Union Mission for help. “This place is a blessing. It’s where I got close to God.” His Case Manhelped him with his health problems and to secure housing through the HUD VASH program. “I love the Union Mission. There’s a lot of people here who don’t appreciate what they give you. Their eyes and ears are closed but they need to open themselves to God. This place is so wonderful. I’d like to stay here, but now I’m getting my own place and can take care of my grandchildren. I thank God for this place and thank

Each year, CCEVA serves more than 6,500 families, most of whom are poor or working poor who struggle each day. This past year, Catholic Charities was blessed to have the support of military volunteers throughout the year. Throughout Hampton Roads, many seniors in our community want to maintain their independence, but sadly can no longer drive or complete daily tasks that were once easily achieved. Mowing the grass, maintaining the yard, and changing light bulbs are routine tasks that many seniors cannot safely over to hire help. This past year, volunteers from the USS Thomas Hudner rolled up their sleeves and helped home bound seniors in our CARES (Community Assistance and Resources for Seniors) program with much needed yard work and maintenance. Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia’s CARES program matches seniors with community vol-
unteers who provide free transportation to medical appointments, shopping and other errands. The program also provides volunteers for minor home repair and yard work. Finding volunteers to help with yard work for these older adults was a challenge until we made a connection with area military commands. Catholic Charities was also blessed to have the help of LS2 Brad McIsaac and sailors from the NAVSUP Fleet Logistic Center at the Norfolk Naval Base who recently volunteered their time and talent to clean up and landscape outside of our Princess Anne dous difference and have helped welcome the many clients that we service Catholic Charities is grateful for all of our military volunteers who donate their time and dedication to helping those in most need in our community. NAS Norfolk Beech King Air commands, his military leadership and management philosophy had emphasized results-oriented planning, high performance productivity, human resource management, and a return on investment. His vast leadership experience in the military had positioned John to make a difference in his community as well. When two of his friends were diagnosed with diabetes in 2006, John found his motivation to take action. “I realized that my dad’s generation had cured polio, smallpox and other diseases and my generation – the baby boomers – had created a lot of pharmaceutical products, but we had not cured anything,” John said. “That epiphany drove me to translate my passion for cycling into ‘Cranking for a Cure’, a mission that could eliminate a chronic disease like diabetes.” John discovered the Association’s Tour de Cure cycling event, and knowing that diabetes is currently a chronic disease with no cure, the team has been riding and growing since 2006. Since their start, the team’s size has exploded, but with that growth, the team has also seen the same national with a third of the team’s riders either
of cycling for cardiovascular health and have made dietary changes and achieved weight loss to reverse the onset of diabetes. The team rides year-round, using weekend training rides supported by Portsmouth’s Cycle Classics bike shop and regional cycling events to keep their cyclists, of all genders, ages and abilities, engaged in an exercise that individuals can do their entire lives. With more than $650,000 raised for diabetes and other worthy causes, Team Portsmouth is committheir lifetime. In 2018, 106 of the ADA’s 1000 Tour de Cure riders wore Team Portsmouth jerseys. John’s goal is to make the 2019 Tour de Cure and Team Portsmouth even more successful, with more funds raised for diabetes advocacy, research, and education efforts. “I do believe that we as individuals have a responsibility to make a difference in society,” John said. “I’m not a Bill Gates who can write a check for a million dollars, but I know how to build a ridership that can raise a lot of funds for this most worthy cause!” The Association’s Tour de Cure event occurs each spring, and includes an experience for everyone, with cycling distances of 12, 30, 63, and 100 miles; as well as a 5k run and walk option. Her personality is one of the charac teristics of Williams syndrome – a rare genetic disorder that she was diagnosed with at birth. Williams
family moved from their hometown in Connecticut to southeastern Vir ginia, where Layla’s father, Richard, a logistics specialist with the U.S. Navy, was stationed. Upon arriving in Virginia, Richard and his wife, Mi chelle, were relieved to discover their daughter could get all the care she needed at CHKD, less than an hour from their new home. Other than an early speech delay, she has hit every milestone within a normal range,” Dr. Vergano said. “And, both Layla and her mother have become an amazing resource for other Williams syndrome families as well as the doctors we train.” Though Layla may always need some extra support, with the con tinued efforts of her family and her team at CHKD, her future is bright. Many children with Williams syn drome go on to college or to jobs in gifts for music, language and social interaction to bring joy to others. “We do have worries about Layla’s future, but mostly we have a lot of hope,” Michelle said. “Having access to a great care team who really un derstands our needs is so important needs or health challenges. We’re CHKD. We couldn’t have ended up in a better place.”
