Movingonfromher previousexaminationofairasashapingforce,theworksin‘Deluge’are floodedwithpearlescentpaint. Rastorferdeterminestheoverallprocessbut allowsserendipitytodirectwherepigmentpoolsandsettles. Themarksleft behindcreatea‘mapofebbingandflowing’(1)andrevealthepainterly processbehindthemakingofeachwork.
Whileemphasisonthemediumisobviousinaworksuchas‘Sluice’,themarks createdbyRastorfer’stechniquealsocreatetonaldepthsthatadvanceand recede. Delicatewebsoftextureareenhancedbytheplayoflightanddark withinandacrossthework,creatinganatmosphericlandscape,albeitone thatweareawarehasbeenalteredfromitsoriginalstate.
Rastorferinvitestheviewertoconsidernotonlytheprocessofherwork,butto alsothinkaboutthelayeringandmanipulationofsurfaces. Thelustre possessedbytheselatestworksismorethanarichsurfaceoradecorative façade;Rastorferwantsustofeelwhatliesbeneath,behindandbetween hersubtlelayersandorganicforms.
