Cancer sucks. Sorry for such strong language, but I don’t know any other way to put it. Cancer just plain and simply sucks. Especially if the person battling this awful disease is a child. Not only is it scary to fight this battle, but kids also have to undergo the negative effects of treatment including losing their hair during chemo.
This is where you come in. You can become a warrior against cancer, help raise money to find a cure and stand in solidarity with a proud bald head! That’s right, you going under the clippers can make the difference in this fight against pediatric cancer. Here is all you have to do. Head over to shavethemayor.com and click the GET SHAVED button at the top of the page to sign up as a “shavee” at the 6th annual Shave the Mayor fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s foundation. Once you sign up, you will set a goal to raise and start asking your friends and family to support you. Let them know that if you reach your goal, you will go bald for them...and for all the kids who don’t have the choice to go bald, but do so while fighting cancer and undergoing treatment.
Young or old, boy or girl, no matter who you are or what you do, we can all pull together to show these kids that they are not alone when they lose their hair and the we are battling along side them to find a cure. This is our 6th year of shaving our heads (and our faces) while we raise money and awareness of pediatric cancer. Last year we raised over $80,000 and had over 110 peole shave. This year, we can do better but we need your help. Our theme for 2017 is “Six Figures in Six Years.” That’s right, we are trying to raise over $100,000 for pediatric cancer and the way we do it is by having 200 or more people shaving. here are times you see things on stage or on screen that just stay with you long after the curtain closes or the lights of theater come back up. The story that plays out in August Wilson’s Fences is one of those stories.

August Wilson, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes and a Tony Award, is widely regarded as one of the finest playwrights ever to write for the American stage. His American Century Cycle, which traces the African-American experience through ten plays, each set in a different decade, stands as a staggering achievement. Fences, the sixth play in the Cycle, revolves around the life of garbage collector Troy Maxson. When his rise through the Negro baseball leagues hit the ceiling of racial prejudice, Maxson turned away from a world of unfulfilled promises and denied opportunities. But in 1957, his son Cory, an emerging football star, sees the world through very different eyes, and his wife Rose yearns for an outlet for her love.
Washington and Davis took the story to movie theater audiences in 2016, reprising their roles as Troy and Rose. Both were once again nominated for their performances, with Viola Davis, winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
The play's first Broadway production was staged at the 46th Street Theatre on March 26, 1987, and ran for over a year. The cast featured the iconic James Earl Jones (Troy Maxson), Mary Alice (Rose), and Courtney B. Vance (Cory). The production won the Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play, and Best Direction of a Play (Lloyd Richards), as well as the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Actor in a Play, and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play. It also received Tony Award nominations for Best Featured Actor in a Play (Faison and Vance). The first Broadway revival of the play opened at the Cort Theatre in 2010, with a limited 13-week engagement. Directed by Kenny Leon, the production starred Denzel Washington (Troy

a day-long educational event at the Douglas County Events Center
The Seniors’ Council of Douglas County is thrilled to present Vintage & Vibrant, a day-long educational event at the Douglas County Events Center, featuring a number of exciting workshops and two very special keynote addresses, specifically designed for older adults in Douglas County. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day and lunch is also included, as well as the chance to win some great door prizes at the close of the day’s offerings. This event will offer a variety of additional topics that will interest older adults in Douglas County and help ensure our communities are a good place to Live Well and Age Well! After opening remarks, the keynote morning’s keynote speakers, Karen Brown and Wade Buchanan will begin their remarks at 9:00am. Karen Brown is the Chair of the 2018 Colorado Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging and Wade Buchanan serves as the Governor’s Senior Advisor on Aging. Following the first keynote addresses, will be the first opportunity to mingle and meet with some of the event sponsors prior to the first breakout session opportunity at 10:15am. Breakout sessions will include topics such as Tai Chi for Seniors, Care Mapping, the Douglas County Library’s Study Corps, Artificial Intelligence, Coming Soon - The New Medicare Card and Personal Safety.
At the 11 o’clock hour will be another opportunity to meet with sponsors of the event, followed by the next breakout session at 11:30am. Lunch will be served at 12:15pm and during that time, the next keynote address will be given by Dr. Mohammed Mahoor from the University of Colorado along with Ryan the Robot. Ryan was created to assist seniors and those with memory loss remain independent and engaged in the community. Curious attendees will be given the chance to “visit” with Ryan the Robot after lunch. The third and final breakout session will begin at 2pm, with some final closing remarks and a video presentation from AARP, Changing the Perception of Aging, scheduled for 2:45pm. Door prizes will be awarded at the close of the day’s activities at 3:00pm. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 2nd, and plan on making a day of it at Vintage and Vibrant at the Douglas County Events Center. This event, bringing together older adults with cutting edge educational sessions and networking opportunities, is the first of its kind hosted by the Seniors’ Council of Douglas County. Cost of the event is just $5 per person for the entire day’s schedule.

The magnificent Veterans Monument, Freedom’s Keeper, that graces Veterans Plaza in Downtown Castle Rock is a constant, genuine reminder of the selfless and often times, ultimate sacrifice that our Veterans make for us every day. The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Foundation was started to get that majestic eagle monument erected. Now that the monument is in place, the focus of the foundation has shifted to continually support our hometown heroes, our local veterans. Currently, grants are being accepted for their Veterans Assistance Grant program. This program is designed to assist with needs that local Veterans have, whether they be transportation needs, ADA home modifications, service dogs, funeral services, or any area where a service gap exists. This year, you can be a part of the amazing work the DCVMF is doing by teeing off in the Douglas County Veterans Golf Tournament, which will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course in Castle Rock, Colorado. The cost per golfer in this tournament is just
$150 and that cost includes breakfast, green fees, cart fees, range balls, prizes, and lunch after golf. There will be an 8am shotgun start and the proceeds from this fantastic event will directly benefit Veterans right here in Douglas County. This tournament will be a four-player scramble. Players can enter as a four person team or you can enter individually and teams will be built for you. Get your golf buddies together and get registered, the deadline to get in on the fun and help out with this extremely worth cause is May 7, 2018. Events like this one take a lot of people to make it successful, and the DCVMF is also looking for sponsors for the golf tournament. ver 2300 years ago, Aristotle proclaimed, “What is the essence of life? To serve others and do good,” proving that the notion of giving back is hardly a new concept. Here in Parker, the members of the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club, chartered in June of 2006, continue that notion of giving back by supporting the community of Parker as well as the tenets of Rotary. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Wednesday, April 11th, the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary feels extremely privileged to host their annual Achievement Luncheon, recognizing nominees who live/work in Douglas County that have made an impact on the lives of others in many ways. After working for companies such as Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, The Broadmoor, Chef America, and Nestle we didn't know that life's unexpected challenges would lead us into baking. Our roots have always been in the savory kitchen. We admit that we had a vision earlier on but weaving the path to great execution wasn't as smooth. It takes a nice mix of strengths and weakness as partners and just the right product mix to create the formula of what is now Cakeheads. We loved the wholesale aspect of the business, however, retail was always a challenge we wanted to pursue. The connection to our clients make our jobs more meaningful. We are all about our craft and appreciate the people that support it. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS? We always say to each other that owning your own business is not for the faint hearted. As husband and wife and business partners, the word challenging seems a bit of an understatement. The fact that we know we are working towards the same goals, and our children are very supportive of our dreams, makes the daily pains of surprises feel like a worthy gain instead. Like we said, our clients are what truly keeps us going. Without their support, we wouldn't be able to build our brand. Our best selling flavor is our Passionfruit Mousse and raspberry schmear on vanilla cake. It is quite a refreshing and memorable flavor combination that is unique to Cakeheads. Be open minded when trying Cakeheads for the first time. We have slowly introduced flavors like Ube (a purple sweet potato) that is earthy, creamy and tastes nothing like a sweet potato! A hint of real coconut rounds up Ube. We think this is going to start a cult following as we see more and more clients order it as part of their wedding cake tier or as their main birthday cake. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO OPEN A BUSINESS IN OUR COMMUNITY? Venture in a business in which you are truly passionate about and make sure you know every facet of that business. Create the demand and never sacrifice your quality. Believe in your products first then your customers will.

The Last Ballad By: Wiley Cash
Set in the foothills of North Carolina in 1929 Ella May Wiggins walks two miles to her job at American Mill No. 2. She takes home $9.00 after laboring away six days a week in hazardous conditions. Her husband has run off and she is trying desperately to take care for her four children. She is curious and tempted when a union leaflet is passed around the mill. After much consideration, Ella decides to go to the rally and she unexpectedly becomes deeply involved with the union. Her fight for fair wages has made her an enemy of those that oppose her position and she will now have to fight for her life.
Becky: Last month I joined
PageHabit*. Depending on the membership you purchase, each month or quarter, you receive a package with at least one new release and some other goodies. The Last Ballad was in my first box so I didn’t choose this book in a traditional manner. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This book is based on a true event in the author’s hometown. There are several points of view as this story develops and the first several chapters introduce different characters in this story. Pam, did you find this confusing?
Pam: The different points of view
come together to form a complete account of the event. However, I did find that they were a lot to keep track of initially. This method of telling the story offered many different perspectives and allowed the reader to see a more thorough account of the event. Ella is the center of the story and all of the accounts are tied back to her and the part she plays. Ella has had a hard life and struggles to take care of her growing family. What were your thoughts about this character?

Becky: Some of her choices were hard for me to understand and frustrated me. However, for the most part I loved this character. She was a strong woman that fought for a worthy cause but put herself and her children in a dangerous situation. This book was a reminder to me that some of our privileges as Americans came at a high cost for previous generations. She was very poor and for me it was difficult to read about the lack of food and challenge to care for her children. She was a tough woman and the author did a great job giving her depth. The story was confusing for awhile with all of the different time frames and characters but it was worth the frustration as

the story comes full circle. The book includes the story told from Lilly, Ella May’s daughter whom is now seventy-five years old. Did you like this flashback or did you feel like it was too much for one story?
Pam: I really enjoyed the flashback
aspect of the story. I felt that it gave perspective to the events and characters in the story. There were such turbulent aspects to the story, that I found this comforting and grounding. It was also interesting to hear Lilly’s thoughts about her mother and the events of the time. I agree that it was very hard to read about the hunger and conditions where the children lived. Lilly’s letters to her nephew helped see the whole picture and beyond these challenges. How did you feel about Lilly’s letters to her nephew? Were you surprised by her feelings about the events?
Becky: It was a very interesting perspective to hear the story from the mother’s point of view and then chapters later to see the story from the daughter’s (as a mature woman looking back on her childhood). Her memories were not what I would have envisioned but it successfully filled in the story from another angle. Her ‘voice’ was not what I would have expected from an elderly woman but it was refreshing and fun. The story is also told from the perspective of a black train porter, a mill owner and a mill owner’s wife. They each brought a different light to the story but although a small role, the mill owner’s wife was my favorite of the three. I enjoyed how her perspective changed as she grew to know Ella May. Did any of these characters impact the story for you? Pam: I agree with you, Becky. I felt that the mill owner’s wife had a large impact on this story. She was from a very different station than Ella May

and expected to just go along with what was happening around their town. However, not only did she allow her perspective to change based on events and overheard information, she also decided to take action. This was dangerous for her and she could have easily hidden in her comfortable home and not ventured out of her safe life. Not only did she reach out to Ella May, she took a stand with her husband and demanded help when it was needed. This character was an intriguing surprise in the story. Were you surprised that Ella May trusted this virtual stranger?
Becky: I did not expect these two ladies to connect due to the extreme differences in social status. I loved that it spoke to the connection that women can make when opportunity allows us to see the struggle someone else is enduring. I am in awe of this strong woman in history and it amazing me that she had such an impact in such a short amount of time. I have read one of his other books, This Dark Road to Mercy, and I did not care for it as much as I did this one. Were you previously familiar with Wiley Cash? Pam: I have never read anything
else by this author, so was new to his writing. I would be interested in looking into his other books, especially if they are historical in nature. It was very interesting to learn about this historical event, of which I had not been previously aware. Next month, we will continue with another historical event. Although this event is very different, we will continue to be immersed in trials and danger as we read Leopard at the Door by Jennifer McVeigh.
