SENIOR LIFE EXPO April 19th 2pm-6pm Douglas County Events Center
With the senior population rapidly growing, services and programs for seniors are expanding equally as fast. It can be rather overwhelming to make sense of it all . The goal of the upcoming Douglas County Senior Life Expo is to bring seniors and their family members together with providers of services, all in one place. At this free event, attendees will be able to meet with representatives regarding “all things senior” topics including housing, health care, insurance, senior organizations, home care, estate planning, assistance and services, funeral and cremation services, transportation, government programs and services, and activities for socializing and keeping busy, and much more. The Senior Life Expo will also offer free seminars with topics of interest to seniors by experts in their respective fields. These will run on the half-hour beginning at 2:30 pm. Topics included in these seminars include “Wills, Trusts & Estate Planning,” “How to Navigate the Medicaid Process,” and “The Truth About Preparing to Downsize (Right Size).” Even if certain services are not needed now, it is
valuable to know where to find help before the time comes when those services are needed. All attendees will receive a program book with contact information sorted by category for all partners, providing a wealth of information and resources. Written materials, giveaways and door prizes will be found throughout the exhibit hall. Concessions will also be available for purchase. This free event, organized by the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center, is a place where seniors, and those who care about them, can come to get questions answered, to seek out services available for now or for the future. Vintage & Vibrant
a day-long educational event at the Douglas County Events Center
The Seniors’ Council of Douglas County is thrilled to present Vintage & Vibrant, a day-long educational event at the Douglas County Events Center, featuring a number of exciting workshops and two very special keynote addresses, specifically designed for older adults in Douglas County. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day and lunch is also included, as well as the chance to win some great door prizes at the close of the day’s offerings. This event will offer a variety of additional topics that will interest older adults in Douglas County and help ensure our communities are a good place to Live Well and Age Well! After opening remarks, the keynote morning’s keynote speakers, Karen Brown and Wade Buchanan will begin their remarks at 9:00am. Karen Brown is the Chair of the 2018 Colorado Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging and Wade Buchanan serves as the Governor’s Senior Advisor on Aging. Following the first keynote addresses, will be the first opportunity to mingle and meet with some of the event sponsors prior to the first breakout session opportunity at 10:15am. Breakout sessions will include topics such as Tai Chi for Seniors, Care Mapping, the Douglas County Library’s Study Corps, Artificial Intelligence, Coming Soon - The New Medicare Card and Personal Safety.
At the 11 o’clock hour will be another opportunity to meet with sponsors of the event, followed by the next breakout session at 11:30am. Lunch will be served at 12:15pm and during that time, the next keynote address will be given by Dr. Mohammed Mahoor from the University of Colorado along with Ryan the Robot. Ryan was created to assist seniors and those with memory loss remain independent and engaged in the community. Curious attendees will be given the chance to “visit” with Ryan the Robot after lunch. The third and final breakout session will begin at 2pm, with some final closing remarks and a video presentation from AARP, Changing the Perception of Aging, scheduled for 2:45pm. Door prizes will be awarded at the close of the day’s activities at 3:00pm. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 2nd, and plan on making a day of it at Vintage and Vibrant at the Douglas County Events Center. This event, bringing together older adults with cutting edge educational sessions and networking opportunities, is the first of its kind hosted by the Seniors’ Council of Douglas County. Cost of the event is just $5 per person for the entire day’s schedule.

We offer instruction in music lessons for all ages and levels as well as selling a wide variety of instruments, pro audio equipment and providing instrument repair. Our shop is also a music community with recitals, special music performances and an open atmosphere for getting to know each other. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO OPEN YOUR BUSINESS IN OUR COMMUNITY? In 2005 my wife and I were living in Washington, D.C. and became pregnant with our first son. We quickly moved into nesting mode and starting looking for a great place to raise a family. My wife’s sister had recently moved to Castle Rock and we came to visit. We quickly fell in love with Colorado and saw an opportunity for a better way of life. We sold our house, moved across the country, and opened the business! WHAT MAKES YOUR BUSINESS “UNIQUE” OR DIFFERENT FROM YOUR COMPETITORS? We are a true old school music shop. There are not many of us left. Folks come in here all the time to chop it up about music, Colorado, sports and just life in general. With the ongoing trend in online shopping, our shop is a place where people can fellowship. WHY DID YOU GET INTO THIS TYPE OF BUSINESS? I’m a musician, a jazz trumpet player. I started working in a music store when I started my undergrad in 1997. The jazz musician life doesn’t mix well with a newborn baby. After my first son was born, I went into provider mode and decided to open my own shop. I’ve only ever worked for small businesses. I’ve never worked for a

corporation. I really love the small business culture and feel they are so important to society, so it was a natural fit for me. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT OWNING YOUR BUSINESS? I love our customers! I also love a challenge. I enjoy seeing the fruits of my labor. I love investing in young musicians. I bring in teachers looking to make a living in music, and then get to watch them teach young musicians to experience the joy of playing an instrument. FOR SOMEONE WHO WILL BE COMING INTO YOUR BUSINESS FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING THEY SHOULD TRY/PURCHASE AND WHY? They should try a music lesson. We don’t have a registration fee and there are no contracts. You can take just one lesson if you’d like. In our fast paced world it’s important to slow down and find things to enjoy and there is nothing better for that than music. So many people have it on their bucket list, sometimes people just need to jump out and experience it. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO OPEN A BUSINESS IN OUR COMMUNITY? Work for a small business. Better yet, work for a small business in the industry you want to get into so you can experience all the different aspects of business ownership. In my place I’m the president, the secretary, janitor, head of marketing, counselor, carpenter, purchaser etc...and after 22 years of being in the biz I’m still learning. You’ve got to keep your head on a swivel. Things are constantly changing.

The magnificent Veterans Monument, Freedom’s Keeper, that graces Veterans Plaza in Downtown Castle Rock is a constant, genuine reminder of the selfless and often times, ultimate sacrifice that our Veterans make for us every day. The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Foundation was started to get that majestic eagle monument erected. Now that the monument is in place, the focus of the foundation has shifted to continually support our hometown heroes, our local veterans. Currently, grants are being accepted for their Veterans Assistance Grant program. This program is designed to assist with needs that local Veterans have, whether they be transportation needs, ADA home modifications, service dogs, funeral services, or any area where a service gap exists. This year, you can be a part of the amazing work the DCVMF is doing by teeing off in the Douglas County Veterans Golf Tournament, which will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course in Castle Rock, Colorado. The cost per golfer in this tournament is just 13

$150 and that cost includes breakfast, green fees, cart fees, range balls, prizes, and lunch after golf. There will be an 8am shotgun start and the proceeds from this fantastic event will directly benefit Veterans right here in Douglas County. This tournament will be a four-player scramble. Players can enter as a four person team or you can enter individually and teams will be built for you. Get your golf buddies together and get registered, the deadline to get in on the fun and help out with this extremely worth cause is May 7, 2018. Events like this one take a lot of people to make it successful, and the DCVMF is also looking for sponsors for the golf tournament.
