2018 Achievement Luncheon Service Above Self
ver 2300 years ago, Aristotle proclaimed, “What is the essence of life? To serve others and do good,” proving that the notion of giving back is hardly a new concept. Here in Parker, the members of the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary Club, chartered in June of 2006, continue that notion of giving back by supporting the community of Parker as well as the tenets of Rotary. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Wednesday, April 11th, the Cherry Creek Valley Rotary feels extremely privileged to host their annual Achievement Luncheon, recognizing nominees who live/work in Douglas County that have made an impact on the lives of others in many ways. During the luncheon, which will be held at the PACE Center from 11am-1pm, these individuals’ exemplary volunteer work and hearts of service will be recognized for their selfless efforts for the community. The Light ‘n’ Heart Award will be given to individuals in categories of Achievement in Leadership, Mentoring, Local/ International Service, Achievement as an Unsung Hero/Heroine and Young Women/Young Men of Achievement.
This year’s ceremony will also feature a keynote speech from author Tommy Spaulding, a world-renown inspirational speaker on leadership and a New York Times bestselling author of It’s Not Just Who You Know and The Heart Led Leader. Tommy Spaulding is the Founder & President of Spaulding Companies, a leadership development, speaking, training, and executive coaching firm based in Denver, Colorado. A world-renowned speaker on leadership, Spaulding has spoken to hundreds of organizations, associations, educational institutions, and corporations around the globe. State of the Town Whether you are relatively new to Parker or you’ve called this amazing town home for some time, it’s always nice to know what’s going on in your community. On Thursday, April 12th, you can get a FREE front row seat to all things Parker. The annual State of the Town Event, sponsored by the Parker Chamber, will be hosted at the gorgeous PACE Center (20000 Pikes Peak Avenue) from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Growing up in a very similar town to Parker (not too far south from here), I felt immediately at home when we decided to move here with our children to make Parker the place we raised our family. Much like the town I grew up in, there have been changes over the last 30 years, and more to come, as change is inevitable. But what is unchanging is the incredible sense of community. Parker Town Council Member Joshua Rivero echoes that sentiment, “Maintaining a hometown feel is not about the number of people that live in our town, it is about how we treat one another. It’s never been about the population, it’s about being a community.” April 12’s State of the Town event, where you can learn all about the great things happening right here in Parker, will begin with a 30 minute meet and greet with Mayor Mike Waid and members of Parker Town Council, followed by a 30 minute presentation, concluding with a cash bar reception following the presentation. Vintage & Vibrant
a day-long educational event at the Douglas County Events Center
The Seniors’ Council of Douglas County is thrilled to present Vintage & Vibrant, a day-long educational event at the Douglas County Events Center, featuring a number of exciting workshops and two very special keynote addresses, specifically designed for older adults in Douglas County. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day and lunch is also included, as well as the chance to win some great door prizes at the close of the day’s offerings. This event will offer a variety of additional topics that will interest older adults in Douglas County and help ensure our communities are a good place to Live Well and Age Well! After opening remarks, the keynote morning’s keynote speakers, Karen Brown and Wade Buchanan will begin their remarks at 9:00am. Karen Brown is the Chair of the 2018 Colorado Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging and Wade Buchanan serves as the Governor’s Senior Advisor on Aging. Following the first keynote addresses, will be the first opportunity to mingle and meet with some of the event sponsors prior to the first breakout session opportunity at 10:15am. Breakout sessions will include topics such as Tai Chi for Seniors, Care Mapping, the Douglas County Library’s Study Corps, Artificial Intelligence, Coming Soon - The New Medicare Card and Personal Safety.
At the 11 o’clock hour will be another opportunity to meet with sponsors of the event, followed by the next breakout session at 11:30am. Lunch will be served at 12:15pm and during that time, the next keynote address will be given by Dr. Mohammed Mahoor from the University of Colorado along with Ryan the Robot. Ryan was created to assist seniors and those with memory loss remain independent and engaged in the community. Curious attendees will be given the chance to “visit” with Ryan the Robot after lunch. The third and final breakout session will begin at 2pm, with some final closing remarks and a video presentation from AARP, Changing the Perception of Aging, scheduled for 2:45pm. Door prizes will be awarded at the close of the day’s activities at 3:00pm. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 2nd, and plan on making a day of it at Vintage and Vibrant at the Douglas County Events Center. This event, bringing together older adults with cutting edge educational sessions and networking opportunities, is the first of its kind hosted by the Seniors’ Council of Douglas County. Cost of the event is just $5 per person for the entire day’s schedule.

There’s something a little extra special about scratch made favorites and great menu filled with “home cooking” specialities like the Hot Open Faced Turkey Sandwich,Chicken Fried Steak and the Diner Burger that just makes you feel good. After taking over the much larger space next door to Rory’s Diner to vastly expand the eat-in dining space, owner Jeff Holland was ready for another new addition. In the space that served as the original seating area for the diner, Rory’s Soda Shop will be opening its doors and delighting customers with hand-crafted, made to order flavored sodas, shakes, malts, floats and banana splits. As a companion to the diner, a select menu will be available at the Soda Shop including timeless classics like hot dogs, chili cheese dogs, burgers, fries, chicken tenders and cheese fries.

Pikes Peak Drive looks more like Main Street, USA, so why not add in a corner drug store kind of feel to go with the diner?” The fundamental idea behind both Rory’s Diner and the Soda Shop is to remember when we lived in a simpler, more innocent time when spending quality time with family and friends was a priority and slowing down to enjoy your time with your family was a constant, not the exception. Rory’s encourages everyone to grab a couple of generations of family and carve an hour or two out of their day to come down, grab some Cherry Colas or Brown Cows and share a basket of fries on the patio; or bring your best guy or girl down to the Soda Shop before the show and split a shake or a float.

FOR SOMEONE WHO WILL BE COMING INTO YOUR BUSINESS FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING THEY SHOULD TRY/PURCHASE AND WHY? Definitely the clothing (any of the lines I carry) should be tried first. Once you have a garment from Petit Parker, you will find the quality undeniably high. That doesn’t mean the prices are high though! I am a mom also and understand value, so the fashion pieces I choose are something that will last not only for one kid but can always be passed down - now that’s value! I have a passion for children’s clothing and want to pass that on to Parker. I believe in color (especially for boys), personality (flair) and age appropriateness while choosing different brands. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO OPEN A BUSINESS IN OUR COMMUNITY? My advice is to go for it! Everyone along the way during the process of opening has been so incredibly helpful. I am a strong advocate of entrepreneurism (especially women.)

The magnificent Veterans Monument, Freedom’s Keeper, that graces Veterans Plaza in Downtown Castle Rock is a constant, genuine reminder of the selfless and often times, ultimate sacrifice that our Veterans make for us every day. The Douglas County Veterans Memorial Foundation was started to get that majestic eagle monument erected. Now that the monument is in place, the focus of the foundation has shifted to continually support our hometown heroes, our local veterans. Currently, grants are being accepted for their Veterans Assistance Grant program. This program is designed to assist with needs that local Veterans have, whether they be transportation needs, ADA home modifications, service dogs, funeral services, or any area where a service gap exists. This year, you can be a part of the amazing work the DCVMF is doing by teeing off in the Douglas County Veterans Golf Tournament, which will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course in Castle Rock, Colorado. The cost per golfer in this tournament is just 31

$150 and that cost includes breakfast, green fees, cart fees, range balls, prizes, and lunch after golf. ne of the most famous astronauts of all time, Neil Armstrong, famously said, “Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand.” If you or your the little star gazers in your house have ever dreamed of rocketing towards the stars and stepping foot on the surface of the moon, or maybe beyond, then make sure you get to Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum to check out the Be The Astronaut exhibit before it closes on April 15th. This completely interactive, pod-based exhibit teaches STEMbased content through a mesmerizing fusion of traditional exhibitry and technology. With the focus on concepts common to all space flight, Be The Astronaut uses a narrative of possible future space missions. The exhibit is full of interactive games and simulations that will speak to adults and children alike. The exhibition itself is like a mission, and in order to advance and succeed further in each phase of the mission (exhibit), visitors learn about the extreme challenges and the unmatched thrill of space flight. Using what they learn at each step, they “fly” spaceships, “pilot” landers, and “drive” rovers across the surfaces of the Moon, Mars, Ceres and Jupiter. All the crafts used in the Be The Astronaut exhibit were thoughtfully designed with the assistance of and oversight from NASA’s Langley Research Facility.

Three different modules will guide your journey through the exhibit. In the Nav (short for Celestial Navigation) Modules, 2D visuals are used to teach basic principles and physics concepts about the workings of the universe on a macro scale. The Science and Technology Modules (or SCI for short) utilize drag and drop interface to help exhibit explorers gain a greater depth of knowledge about the science and technology necessary to both explore and thrive in outer space. Lastly, the Fly Modules are exactly what they sound like. Using the knowledge you’ve gained through Nav and Sci training, hop into the driver’s seats in various spacecraft. Pilot an interplanetary spaceship while maneuvering through an asteroid belt or drive a rover across celestial surfaces on other planets. This module puts you in control of some of the most advanced technology ever created. Admission to the Be The Astronaut Exhibit is included in the price of admission to Wings Over the Rockies. Set in the foothills of North Carolina in 1929 Ella May Wiggins walks two miles to her job at American Mill No. 2. She takes home $9.00 after laboring away six days a week in hazardous conditions. Her husband has run off and she is trying desperately to take care for her four children. She is curious and tempted when a union leaflet is passed around the mill. After much consideration, Ella decides to go to the rally and she unexpectedly becomes deeply involved with the union. Her fight for fair wages has made her an enemy of those that oppose her position and she will now have to fight for her life.
Becky: Last month I joined
PageHabit*. Depending on the membership you purchase, each month or quarter, you receive a package with at least one new release and some other goodies. The Last Ballad was in my first box so I didn’t choose this book in a traditional manner. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This book is based on a true event in the author’s hometown. There are several points of view as this story develops and the first several chapters introduce different characters in this story. Pam, did you find this confusing?
Pam: The different points of view
come together to form a complete account of the event. However, I did find that they were a lot to keep track of initially. This method of telling the story offered many different perspectives and allowed the reader to see a more thorough account of the event. Ella is the center of the story and all of the accounts are tied back to her and the part she plays. Ella has had a hard life and struggles to take care of her growing family. What were your thoughts about this character?

Becky: Some of her choices were hard for me to understand and frustrated me. However, for the most part I loved this character. She was a strong woman that fought for a worthy cause but put herself and her children in a dangerous situation. This book was a reminder to me that some of our privileges as Americans came at a high cost for previous generations. She was very poor and for me it was difficult to read about the lack of food and challenge to care for her children. She was a tough woman and the author did a great job giving her depth. The story was confusing for awhile with all of the different time frames and characters but it was worth the frustration as APRIL 2018 search parker magazine
the story comes full circle. The book includes the story told from Lilly, Ella May’s daughter whom is now seventy-five years old. Did you like this flashback or did you feel like it was too much for one story?
Pam: I really enjoyed the flashback
aspect of the story. I felt that it gave perspective to the events and characters in the story. There were such turbulent aspects to the story, that I found this comforting and grounding. It was also interesting to hear Lilly’s thoughts about her mother and the events of the time. I agree that it was very hard to read about the hunger and conditions where the children lived. Lilly’s letters to her nephew helped see the whole picture and beyond these challenges. How did you feel about Lilly’s letters to her nephew? Were you surprised by her feelings about the events?
Becky: It was a very interesting perspective to hear the story from the mother’s point of view and then chapters later to see the story from the daughter’s (as a mature woman looking back on her childhood). Her memories were not what I would have envisioned but it successfully filled in the story from another angle. Her ‘voice’ was not what I would have expected from an elderly woman but it was refreshing and fun. The story is also told from the perspective of a black train porter, a mill owner and a mill owner’s wife. They each brought a different light to the story but although a small role, the mill owner’s wife was my favorite of the three. I enjoyed how her perspective changed as she grew to know Ella May. Did any of these characters impact the story for you? Pam: I agree with you, Becky. I felt that the mill owner’s wife had a large impact on this story. She was from a very different station than Ella May

and expected to just go along with what was happening around their town. However, not only did she allow her perspective to change based on events and overheard information, she also decided to take action. This was dangerous for her and she could have easily hidden in her comfortable home and not ventured out of her safe life. Not only did she reach out to Ella May, she took a stand with her husband and demanded help when it was needed. This character was an intriguing surprise in the story. Were you surprised that Ella May trusted this virtual stranger?
Becky: I did not expect these two ladies to connect due to the extreme differences in social status. I loved that it spoke to the connection that women can make when opportunity allows us to see the struggle someone else is enduring. I am in awe of this strong woman in history and it amazing me that she had such an impact in such a short amount of time. I have read one of his other books, This Dark Road to Mercy, and I did not care for it as much as I did this one. Were you previously familiar with Wiley Cash? Pam: I have never read anything
else by this author, so was new to his writing. I would be interested in looking into his other books, especially if they are historical in nature. It was very interesting to learn about this historical event, of which I had not been previously aware. Next month, we will continue with another historical event. Although this event is very different, we will continue to be immersed in trials and danger as we read Leopard at the Door by Jennifer McVeigh.
