Douglas County Veterans Day Tribute

Nearly a century ago, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” This day was commemorated in numerous countries as Armistice Day and in 1938, November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States. Years later, in the aftermath of WWII and the Korean War, Armistice Day legally became known as Veterans Day. A day dedicated to American Veterans of all wars. During this time of remembrance, you may see people wearing a Red Poppy in their lapel. Red Poppies became symbolic of remembering those who have served after showing up in the poem, “In Flanders Fields,” by John McCrae after WWI. Lieutenant Colonel McCrae, after losing his friend and comrade, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer in battle, was inspired by the sight of red poppies growing in the scarred battlefield and penned these infamous words in May of 1915... In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Honoring those who have served is an act that should be constantly present for all of us. On Saturday, 5

November 11th, at 11:00am, the community is invited to come together to do just that, honor all who have served, at the Douglas County Veterans Day Tribute at the site of the Douglas County Veterans Memorial. The exquisite monument was designed and crafted by Mr. Bill Hueg. The magnificent eagle is 14’ tall with a stunning 8’ wingspan. Recently, Castle Rock Boy Scout Troop 780 pitched in to clean and wax the monument, in order to honor our service members and earn community service credit for their hard work. Now that the monument is in place, the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation has been able to shift its focus, becoming a valuable resource for Veterans through their Veterans Assistance Grant Program. This program was created to assist with ADA home modifications, service dogs, transportation needs, funeral expenses - anywhere that a gap exists with Veterans’ needs. Donations towards these grants can be made through DCVMF’s website, dcvmf.org. By donating to the DCVMF, volunteering, attending the ceremony on Veterans Day or just taking the time to sincerely thank a service member every opportunity you are given, you are making a difference in the lives of those who are willing to sacrifice their own.

The historic site of Rink at the Rock was once the home of Gertrude A. Ehmann-Mikelson, who lived there from the late 1930’s until her death in 1993. Her family’s legacy dates back to 1878 and plays a significant role in the history and development of Castle Rock. Gertrude’s grandfather helped construct the Old Stone Church and the original Courthouse on the Square. A very busy mother of three, she was also very active in the community while simultaneously working as a school teacher. Gertrude served on the Selective Service board and helped create what is now known as the Tri-County Health Department. With all Gertrude and her family did for the community, surely she would be extremely proud and pleased that what was once her family’s home is now a place for everyone to come together each year. In addition to open skate times, Rink at the Rock offers programs for young skaters and skaters young at heart. For those 5 years old and up with little to no skating experience, Rink at the Rock offers Learn to Skate classes in two different sessions throughout the season. Session 1 will be held on Saturdays: November 25th, December 2nd, 9th & 16th at 10:00 am. Session 2 will run on Sundays: January 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th at 10:00 am. Lessons are $95 and that includes the four 30 minutes classes, skate rental and same day skate pass. Contact 804-459-0102 / RinkattheRockInfo@gmail.com for private lesson scheduling and fees. Registration forms can be found online at www.rinkattherock.com. The kids aren’t the only ones tearing it up at the Rink. Co-Ed Adult 4x4 Broomball teams are forming now and you still have time to get a few friends together and join in on the fun. Broomball teams must have a minimum of four players, at least 18 years of age. Brooms and balls will be provided, helmets are required and other pads are recommended! Team registration deadline is 12/5. Games will be played Tuesdays at 6:30 pm beginning November 28th through February 13th. In addition to open skating, skating lessons and the Broomball league, the Rink at the Rock is available to rent for private events. It’s the perfect place for a fun holiday get-together or an unforgettable winter birthday party! Private event reservations are available on days that are not already scheduled for other special events or open skating. A group discount is available for parties held during open skating with a prior reservation. A 50% discount off your skate rental is available for groups of 20 or more. Castle Rock once again hosts the season’s most time honored tradition and welcomes everyone to the annual Castle Rock Starlighting Celebration Saturday, November 18th, in the Historic Wilcox Square, right in the heart of Downtown Castle Rock. Since 1936, the Star has been lit nearly every year for the holiday season, serving as a symbol of hope and peace for the community for over 80 years. The Star was conceived from humble beginnings. Poles were donated by a local electric company to build the 40 foot structure and it was wired to be lit with nearly 100 bulbs with wire donated by the Mountain States Telephone Company. The Star shone brightly over the town of Castle Rock from 5pm to midnight each night until 1941. During WWII, lighting the Star became a luxury Castle Rock could no longer afford. Due to electricity rationing during the war, the structure remained a symbol of hope on the Rock, even unlit. On August 14, 1945, the Star was lit as a “V” for victory, marking the end of the war. December 7th of that year, the Star was once again lit for the holidays and has been each year since. Four years later, in 1949, the Star was rebuilt to make it a much safer and stronger structure, with repairs and maintenance being done over the years as needed. The Star isn’t just for the holidays. In 1998 and 1999 it was lit in Bronco’s orange and blue in honor of Denver’s back to back Superbowl wins and again in 2015 after the Bronco’s win over the Panthers. It’s also been used to bring us together in difficult times. In 2001, after the horrific attacks on September 11th, the star was lit for several weeks as a symbol of remembrance and unity. That year, the Starlighting Ceremony theme was one of patriotism. The Star Lighting Ceremony is a tradition that began in the mid 60’s after a new group of community leaders, led by Mrs. Anne McConnell, instituted the ceremony. Programs included choirs from local churches and the USAFA and even a parade. For over a decade, the ceremony was held at the Douglas County Courthouse until the courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1978. It was then held on the “courtyard square” then in 1999 it was moved to the steps of the new police station on Perry Street. This season’s celebration will once again include hot chocolate, strolling entertainers, live entertainment and the big man in red himself will be there for visits and photos. While you’re downtown, lace up those skates and hit the Rink at the Rock, Castle Rock’s outdoor rink. The celebration is from 2pm-7pm, with Starlighting Ceremony beginning at 5pm. The Star will be illuminated at approximately 5:30pm. Free shuttle rides will be available from 1:30pm-8:30pm from Douglas County High School, Douglas County Fairgrounds and Castle View High School. Shuttle locations are specific, so be sure to make note which shuttle you arrived on to be certain you return to your car on the same shuttle route. Open parking will be available in Parking Garage levels 1, 2 and 3. Many roads leading into downtown will be closed for the event so plan accordingly. Come share in the magic of Castle Rock’s very Norman Rockwell-esque tradition and head out to Wilcox Square Saturday, November 18th, for the Castle Rock Starlighting.
