Happy 20th Anniversary!
The Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum Anniversaries are important celebrations and milestones like your 20th deserve to be recognized. For the last twenty years, the Castle Rock Historical Society has been volunteering their time to make sure residents and visitors alike get the chance to experience and learn about the colorful history of Castle Rock. The Castle Rock Historical Society was formed in 1991 by a group of citizens with a passion for highlighting the colorful and rich history of Castle Rock as well as preserve historic buildings in the heart of Downtown. Five years after the society was founded, the Historical Society was able to purchase the old Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Depot to create a museum, which it still is today. The museum showcases several permanent exhibits as well as temporary exhibits such as the current exhibit 100th Anniversary of the United States Entering into WWII. Both permanent and limited exhibits are on display at the museum, but the work of the Historical Society hardly stops there. The CRHS hosts regular Walking and Biking Tours of Historic Downtown Castle Rock, Trolley Tours, Walking Tours of historical cemeteries in October, and seasonal special events. Additionally, free monthly presentations are hosted at the Philip S. Miller Library, covering a variety of subjects. On September 14th, you can catch a presentation by Bart Berger from the Denver Mountain Parks Foundation. Berger created this foundation several years ago to assist in advocating for Denver Mountain Parks in the hopes of improving and maximizing the potential of the park system’s 14,000 acres. Refreshments will be served prior to the presentation at 6:45pm, with the main event commencing at 7pm. Presentations like these draw dozens of curious residents each month, eager to learn something new about their community. The Castle Rock Historical Society is proud to present these, free of charge, but depends on and sincerely appreciates the support of those who enjoy these and all the other programming the CRHS sponsors. Marcus Garvey once said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” The Castle Rock Historical Society knows that this community’s roots run deep and they are committed to preserving all that is uniquely Castle Rock for years to come. Artists, art enthusiasts and those looking for a way to add a little color to their weekend be sure to make plans to experience the Castle Rock Artfest. Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th, the Outlets at Castle Rock becomes the biggest creative outlet around with more than 170 exhibitors showcasing everything from life-size sculptures, to photography and jewelry and every other medium in between. In addition to the artists from all over the country displaying and selling their works, Artfest will have live, main stage entertainment all weekend as well as strolling entertainers, the Artfest Store, a silent auction and the Imagination Zone for those little, budding artists. Food and beverage vendors will also be on hand. The cost is just $5 for adults and $3 for seniors; children 16 and under are admitted free of charge. Military and First Responders and their immediate families will also be admitted for free (with ID.)
New this year is the Rock After Dark VIP Event. Ticketholders to this special addition will be able to enjoy Artfest after hours, on Saturday from 6:30pm-10:00pm. Rock After Dark will feature live music, food and more to enjoy.
This year’s featured artist is Nick Lucey, who specializes in fine art landscapes and commercial photography. Nick got his start as a journalist working as a combat correspondent in the US Marine Corps in the 1980’s. After his 5 year tour was finished, he moved to Savannah, where he worked at Rodale’s Scuba Diving Magazine, eventually becoming Editor at Large. His assignments took him all over the world, including exotic locales such as Borneo, Egypt, Japan, the Maldives, Micronesia and nearly every island in the Caribbean. Nick has completed thousands of dives and his photographs have been published in magazines all over the world. Nearly 10 years ago, he co-founded LiquidAssests.tv and has spent the last three years filming “Into the Drink,” which premiered on MAVTV in April 2014. In May of 2014, he moved to Colorado and set up his office and studio in Downtown Castle Rock. Nick is a very active member of the community with the Chamber of Commerce’s Government Interest Committee, as well as serving on the Board of the Castle Rock Chamber and Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation. In hopes of forging a lasting legacy from Artfest, event hosts The Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce has created a Community Art Fund to both encourage and financially support large-scale, outdoor art installations for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. Pieces include “Freedom’s Keeper” by Bill Hueg, which stands in Veterans Plaza and “JAX” by Janene Dirico-Cable. Jax is a monument dedicated to Police Dogs and was created in the likeness of Jax, who served Castle Rock from 2002-2008. This piece can be seen at the Castle Rock Police Station. Most recently, a new 9/11 Monument was erected outside the CRFD Local 4116 Headquarters. It is comprised of a tall piece of contorted, rusted steel pipe, which is a portion of pipe from the fallen World Trade Center. The steel rests on a pedestal of locally-quarried rhyolite. Help keep art alive and join the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce and artists from around the country in what will surely be a weekend filled with wonder at the 27th Annual Artfest. Artfest will be held at the Outlets at Castle Rock, 5050 Factory Shops Rd. Shuttle Service parking will be available at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Respectfully, no pets allowed at this event.

Castle Rock Oktoberfest September 30th | 1pm - 9pm | Wilcox Square
T
he 24th Annual Castle Rock Oktoberfest, sponsored by Bellco Credit Union, transforms Castle Rock into a Bavarian playground on Saturday, September 30th, from 1pm–9pm, right in the heart of Downtown at Wilcox Square and the surrounding streets. This very popular fall festival will be one hour longer this year and feature free bounce houses, face painters and balloon artists, German dancers, live music, football courtesy of Xfinity, food trucks and a variety of adult beverages. Local favorite, Rockyard Brewing Company, will serve as the primary beer provider and will be joined by ten other breweries including 105 West, Grist, Blue Spruce, Barnett & Son, Lone Tree Brewing, Deschutes, Paulaner, Astro Tap, Four Sons and Odyssey. Last summer, over 10,000 people gathered in Downtown Castle Rock to sample brews, bratwursts and dance the day away. This year’s festivities begin with a ceremonial keg tapping and set the stage for stein hoisting, classic Bavarian tunes and family activities. Oktoberfest is the largest regional draw event that the Downtown Merchants Association produces. Getting to and from the event can be made a bit
easier with free shuttle service, provided by the Downtown Alliance, between the Town lot and the event every fifteen minutes from 12:30pm-9:00pm. Residents can also take advantage of Lyft rides available at the event to ensure they arrive home safely. If you are driving to the event, the Douglas County Parking garage at 3rd and Jerry will be open as well as the Douglas County lot on Elbert Street between 3rd and 4th Streets. The Town of Castle Rock parking lot is 2 blocks south of the event at the corner of South and Perry Streets. Be aware that Wilcox between 3rd and 5th Streets will be closed along with Jerry Street between 3rd and 4th Streets, 4th Street between Perry and Jerry Streets and 3rd Street between Perry and Wilcox. Oktoberfest guests are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs &/or picnic blankets to find a spot to claim as their own home base during the event. The festival covers a lot of ground, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen! Although warm weather is anticipated, be sure to check the event’s Facebook or Twitter page for the most up to date event information (in the event of Colorado weather blitzkrieg!)
