May is truly prime time for golf in North Texas. Now is when blue skies meet lush fairways just as the PGA Tour heads to Colonial Country Club for this month’s Charles Schwab Challenge. If none of this can inspire me to dust off my clubs, maybe the new blazing yellow uprights of the gridiron-inspired driving range at Cowboys Golf Club will do the trick.

I first learned how to swing a golf club back in high school an really got into the sport in my 20s. Back then, if I wasn’t hitting the range between rounds, I was reading up on new gear and tactics. Nicole enjoyed playing too, and together, we went so far as to arrange a tournament for friends and family as a part of our wedding weekend’s events.

Admittedly, my game took a downward swing once fatherhood rolled around. Still, over the years, I’ve hit my fair share of the local courses in this month’s Spring Swing Guide. I’ve played charity scrambles for Metroport Meals On Wheels in Trophy Club, celebrated a buddy's milestone birthday in Keller, and dropped plenty of shots in the water at what I believe to be the most picturesque hole around — No. 18 at Timarron Country Club. If you look closely at our cover, you may spot one of them.

I’m proof that scratch golfers aren’t the only ones who can appreciate a beautifully manicured fairway and a day out in the sun. That’s why we’ve also paired our local links with the perfect 19th-hole from which to raise a glass and toast to a day that you hope never ends.

No matter how you slice it, and I often do, a day spent on the course is always one to remember.

25 Years and Still Smokin’

Feedstore’s First Quarter-Century of Plates, Pits, and People

For some, twenty-fiveyears is a generation. For Feedstore BBQ & More, it’s a testament to the power of tradition and a perfectly smoked brisket.

This year, the Southlake staple officially celebrates its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of serving as the city’s unofficialliving room. And while the Lafavers family opened the restaurant’s doors in 2001, the site’s history runs much deeper.

Originally the Bailey Feed Store in the 1950’s, the rustic building on White Chapel Boulevard has evolved from a small-town supply shop into a beloved gathering place. Today, the smell of cattle feed has long been replaced by the irresistible aroma of St. Louis-cut pork ribs and hickorysmoked meats.

Feedstore’s longevity is no accident; it ‘s the result of a golden rule of consistency, ensuring every plate served today honors the family’s tradition. Whether it’s the Tuesday and Thursday chicken fried steak specials, the fan-favorite burnt ends served on Mondays and Saturdays, or the signature jalapeño cheddar sausage, the menu has remained a reliable anchor as the city grew around it.

CARROLL NAMES 2026 VALEDICTORIAN AND SALUTATORIAN

Carroll Independent School District has named Akhil SanapalaVenkata as Valedictorian and William Tian Zhang as Salutatorian for the Class of 2026 at Carroll Senior High School. Akhil distinguished himself through rigorous STEM coursework and research at Texas Christian University, along with leadership and service across the community. William, a National Merit Finalist, excelled academically while leading Carroll’s swim team and competing at the national level. He will attend University of Texas at Austin to study biochemistry.

ME SQUARED GALA SETS NEW FUNDRAISING RECORD

The Me Squared Cancer Foundation celebrated a record-breaking night at its 5th Annual Black and White Gala, held at The Westin Southlake. The event surpassed last year’s totals, raising significant funds to support newly diagnosed cancer patients across DFW. Featuring dinner, dancing, and a live auction, the evening highlighted the organization’s mission to ease the financial burden of treatment. Since its founding, Me Squared has distributed more than $2 million in grants to over 1,500 patients, providing critical assistance for those facing cancer.

CARROLL ISD CELEBRATES 2025-26 TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

Carroll ISD recently honored its top educators of the year across all 11 campuses with festive parades and celebrations. MAKE YOUR DRAGON A HAPPY CAMPER THIS SUMMER

Carroll ISD is offering a wide range of summer camps for students of all ages across its 11 campuses. From STEM and innovation labs like Lego, Chemistry, and Robotics camps for grades K-8, to creative programs including Magical Makers, Fashion Camp, and Sizzling Summer Art, there’s something for every young Dragon. LADY DRAGONS DOMINATE DISTRICT HONORS

After a historic 26-1-1 season, the Lady Dragons soccer team dominated UIL District 4-6A honors, led by Peyton Hayes (MVP), Audrey Anderson (Midfielder of the Year), and Ava Sexton (Defensive Player of the Year).

Carroll’s depth showed across the board, with First Team selections Caroline Holcombe, Macie Colvin, Lexi Khan, Brady Burtnett, Maura Hayes, Berkley McCombs, and Olivia Holcombe. Second Team honors went to Sophie Adcock, Cristina Auns, Presley Wilkerson, Mariana Auns, and Anna Winters, while Caroline Smith and Maggie Marini earned Honorable Mention recognition. The Lady Dragons went undefeated in district play, reached the state semifinals, and set a program record by allowing just six goals all season.

CARROLL ODYSSEY OF MIND TEAMS EARN WORLD BERTHS

Seven teams from Carroll Independent School District are headed to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals after standout performances at regional and state competitions. Representing campuses from elementary through high school, 48 students earned spots at the international event, set for May 27–30 at Iowa State University. The achievement follows a strong showing that included multiple advancing teams and top honors for creativity, as Carroll students now prepare to compete against teams from around the globe, showcasing months of innovation, teamwork and problemsolving excellence.

TIMARRON SWIM LESSONS RETURN FOR SUMMER 2026

North Texas continues to boom, with the Dallas-Fort Worth metro adding more than 123,000 residents between mid-2024 and mid-2025, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The surge brings the region’s population to nearly 8.5 million, one of the largest annual gains nationwide. Tarrant County remains a key driver of that growth, fueled by a mix of international migration, domestic moves and steady natural increases. The continued expansion is placing new demand on housing, infrastructure and resources across the region.

ROTHY’S STEPS INTO SOUTHLAKE

Sustainable fashion favorite Rothy's has officially opened at Southlake Town Square, bringing its signature blend of style and eco-conscious design to the area. Located at 307 Grand Ave. E., the boutique features the brand’s popular washable flats, handbags, and everyday essentials made from recycled materials, along with seasonal styles. KATE WEISER CLOSING LOCATIONS

Beloved artisan chocolatier Kate Weiser Chocolate is set to close all of its retail locations, including its shop in Grapevine. Known for its hand-painted chocolates and seasonal confections, the brand built a loyal following across North Texas. While storefronts are closing, fans will get one more taste later this year, as the company plans a limited return for its popular Christmas offerings.

TIMBERLAND TO OPEN NEW STORE AT GRAPEVINE MILLS

the shopping destination later this year as part of a broader Dallas-Fort Worth expansion. The Grapevine location — expected to span more than 4,500 square feet — will feature the brand’s signature footwear, apparel, and accessories. Additional stores are planned for Galleria Dallas and Allen Premium Outlets, signaling a shift toward a more immersive, in-person retail experience in North Texas.

DALLAS STARS MULTISPORT FACILITY OPENS IN NORTHLAKE

Northlake’s massive new Children’s Health StarCenter Multisport facility is officially open — but you might not know it just by driving by. The $45 million, 230,000-square-foot complex welcomed its first guests in late March, bringing ice rinks, basketball courts and volleyball space to the fast-growing Highway 114 corridor just minutes from Grapevine and Southlake. Still, with construction crews active and additional amenities like dining and surrounding development rolling out through 2026, the venue is very much in a “soft opening” phase — fully operational inside, with the finishing touches still taking shape outside.

DFW CENTURION LOUNGE SET FOR MAJOR EXPANSION

Travelers passing through Dallas Fort Worth International Airport can expect a more elevated pre-flight experience soon. American Express is expanding its Centurion Lounge at DFW, with a redesigned space slated for 2027. The lounge will grow nearly 50 percent, adding more seating, a new dining area and a second full-service bar. Upgrades also include curated menus from award-winning chefs, craft cocktails and even a walk-up ice cream window — all part of DFW’s ongoing push toward premium travel amenities.

BED BATH & BEYOND ACQUIRING THE CONTAINER STORE

Bed Bath & Beyond will acquire The Container Store for $150 million, with plans to rebrand locations as a hybrid retail concept. The Southlake Town Square store is expected to remain open as part of the deal. After a year of post-bankruptcy stabilization, the partnership marks a shift toward growth, with expanded home services like custom closets, cabinetry and more potentially coming to stores, alongside broader home goods offerings and enhanced in-store design support for customers.

Readers’ Choice Winner Celebration

A Decade Long Mission to Make Water Safer for Every Child

Southlake resident Lori Cerami turned an unimaginable tragedy into a mission that’s saving lives. In 2016 after losing her daughter Elise, an accomplished 13-year-old swimmer, to a drowning accident, Lori launched the Swim4Elise Foundation to honor her memory while also raising awareness for pool safety. . The foundation has grown to educate thousands of children annually on water safety while fostering community involvement through local and virtual races. Lori has tapped into the community and along with help from its volunteers Swim4Elise programs combine heart, personal storytelling, and practical education, that after a decade have created a legacy far bigger than anyone could have imagined.

THE MOMENTS THAT SHAPED ME WERE… seeing the first “water safety week” come together in 2017. Another swim mom had asked how we would honor Elise near her first anniversary. That question sparked the program that eventually became a full summer of daily lessons — showing me that sharing Elise’s story could truly make a difference.

ELISE’S LEGACY MEANS… seeing families and runners come together year after year. There’s a mix of joy and remembrance, and that energy reflects Elise herself: bringing people closer while teaching an important lesson.

MY MISSION IS… to create a “positive wave of change.” Through classroom programs, lifeguard scholarships, and community events, we hope every child in North Texas — and beyond — learns to advocate for themselves around water.

THE REALITY OF THE NUMBERS… fuels everything we do. In 2025, Texas lost 88 children to fatal drownings — and there are five to eight more nonfatal incidents for each fatality, leaving lifelong challenges. Each statistic represents a family navigating unimaginable grief, which reminds us that prevention is urgent and necessary.

THE MOST REWARDING FEEDBACK I’VE RECEIVED… is hearing that a child finally “gets it.” Parents often struggle to communicate water safety, but through storytelling, kids relate. They realize these lessons aren’t just rules — they’re personal.

THE TEAM ASPECT OF RUN4ELISE… is essential. We’re stronger together. Teams help spread

awareness and multiply the impact of each participant, showing how a community can amplify safety messages while honoring Elise. And, even if you don’t want to run the 5K, you can still do the 1-mile walk or run. Some people think that this is just a fitness-only event, but if you can walk a mile, you can be a part of this event and help support this cause.

MY PERSONAL RESILIENCE… comes from turning grief into purpose. There’s a significant void where Elise once lived. Giving that emptiness meaning has been both humbling and motivating.

A MESSAGE FOR PARENTS IS… pay attention to age-specific risks. Infants are most at risk in bathtubs, toddlers in pools, and teens in open water. Boys drown at higher rates than girls. Awareness, supervision, and teaching kids to advocate for themselves saves lives.

THE VIRTUAL REACH IS… inspiring. This year, online participants span from California to Florida, extending Elise’s legacy far beyond North Texas.

IN LOOKING AHEAD… we’re working with USA Swimming and the American Red Cross to integrate the ‘Elise Pre-EAP’ into their programming. Our executive director, Vicki Lawrence, also released ‘The Vacation Kitten,’ a book touching on water safety education for children. The ultimate goal is simple: reach more kids, prevent more accidents, and keep Elise’s spirit alive in every lesson.

I WANT TO BE REMEMBERED… as someone who turned loss into action, inspired a community, and made water safety personal, meaningful, and lifesaving for families everywhere.

Tour 18 offers one of the most distinctive rounds in North Texas, replicating famous holes from 16 legendary courses. The round opens on Cherry Hills' first hole — where Arnold Palmer drove the green to win the 1960 U.S. Open — and builds through replicas of Oakmont's Church Pew bunkers, Riviera's bunker-in-the-green par-3, and TPC Sawgrass's island-green 17th. The round finishes with all three holes of Augusta's Amen Corner. The replicas were so faithful early on that some original clubs pursued legal action to force modifications. The Georgian-style clubhouse overlooks the island green, and a full bar and restaurant complete the experience. This is golf as entertainment: memorable, conversation-starting, and genuinely challenging. For something different and highly shareable, Tour 18 is unmatched.

Texas Star Golf Course – Euless

Stevens Park Golf Course

Often called the "Little Augusta" of North Texas, Stevens Park is one of the most historically rich courses in the region. Dating to 1924 and originally designed by Jack Burke Sr. — father of 1956 Masters champion Jack Burke Jr. — the course was fully rebuilt in 2011 by Colligan Golf Design with 38 new bunkers, new greens, and over 900 new trees plus 2,000 knockout rosebushes that earned it the Augusta nickname. Built on land donated by the Stevens family, the course carries genuine neighborhood roots. Golfweek ranked it among the top 50 municipal courses in the United States. Compact at around 6,200 yards, it compensates with small, fast greens, sharp doglegs, skyline views, and a charming old-school atmosphere that makes every round feel like a little slice of Dallas history.

Vaquero Club – Westlake

Vaquero is the pinnacle of North Texas private golf. Established in 2001 on 525 acres of the former Hunt brothers' Circle T Ranch and developed by Discovery Land Company, the club was originally designed by Tom Fazio. In 2023, architect Andrew Green completed a sweeping renovation — redesigning green complexes, converting sandy buffers into native areas, reversing two holes, and replacing the par-3 17th with an entirely new short 16th. Brilliant white sand bunkers are a visual signature throughout, framing fairways and greens with a bold, classic aesthetic. Small Gallery, Outsized Impact

How a Westlake Art Dealer Landed a Masterwork at the Van Gogh Museum

Most galleries don't sell to the Louvre. Or the Met. Or the Getty. Or the Musée d’Orsay.

Gallery 19C, an unassuming neighborhood gem focused exclusively on 19th century art and tucked into an office complex on Westlake's Solana campus, has sold to all of them.

The latest: placing "Her Man Is at Sea" (1887–1889) by French artist Virginie Demont-Breton into the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The painting, depicting a fisherman's wife clutching her child by the hearth, anxiety palpable as she waits for her husband's return from sea, had been out of public view for decades before being found in, of all places, a suburban Dallas dining room.

A passing conversation at TEFAF Maastricht, one of the world's premier art fairs, brought it into gallery owner Eric Weider's focus: if he ever happened to find it, the Van Gogh Museum would be very interested. What followed was part detective work, part pure luck.

After months of combing through more traditional channels, a Google search surfaced a D Home Magazine article from 2018. This painting could have been anywhere in the world. Yet there it was — in a design spread from a home thirty minutes away in Preston Hollow.

Eight months of unanswered emails followed. Not out of disinterest, it turned out, but out of love for the painting. When Weider finally sat down with the owners, he found collectors who felt about their painting exactly the way he feels about every work he handles. "We don't really consider ourselves owners," the husband told him. "We're custodians."

Weider immediately related. "Then you understand why this painting belongs in a museum."

They agreed.

The significance is real. Demont-Breton was one of the few women of her time to achieve national recognition, and only the second woman in France to receive the prestigious Legion of Honor. A central figure in advancing women's participation in the arts, her powerful coastal scenes, often overshadowed by the fame of her father, the celebrated painter Jules Breton, are now gaining renewed attention.

This particular painting carries even greater weight. Van Gogh admired the Breton family deeply and copied "Her Man Is at Sea" during his time in Saint-Rémy, making it a key reference point in understanding his artistic influences Now, for the first time, DemontBreton is represented in a Dutch public collection, in a museum dedicated to the artist she helped inspire.

And it was all made possible thanks to a humble gallery in Westlake.

East Dallas Staple Leans Into Coastal Italian

On Fitzhugh Avenue, Urbano Cafe has long been a goto neighborhood bistro known for its intimacy, loyal following, and incredible food. Now, under new ownership, the 17-year-old staple is entering a new chapter, trading heavier red-sauce traditions for something brighter, fresher, and more coastal.

“We’re delighted to lean into a bright, uncomplicated, vegetable-forward style of cooking inspired by coastal Italy — places like Sicily, Sardinia, Capri, and Apulia,” says co-owner Sina Heidari who, alongside his brother Pasha, took over the restaurant in 2024.

The menu still nods to Italian-American comfort, but with a lighter hand. Starters like bruschetta caponata, Urbano’s take on the Sicilian classic, served atop housemade focaccia, or a whole roasted artichoke with aïoli and gremolata set the tone. There’s also an unmissable cioppino layered with shellfish and ’nduja in a tomato-whitewine broth that begs for extra bread for soaking up every drop. Not to mention the lobster ravioli “Fra Diavolo” that is quickly becoming a house signature.

For something a little heartier, their Gulf Shrimp Zafferano pairs fregola, saffron, and pecorino Sardo, while Duck Fagioli e Scarola balances richness with cannellini beans and greens. And for those not quite ready to part with red sauce, Urbano’s bakes up a mezzi-rigatoni, bathed in ragù and studded with Italian sausage from neighboring Jimmy’s Food Store – a beloved Dallas institution.

Along with the updated menu, the wine list has also been completely reimagined, with a focus on Italian and domestic producers. “This is a list created for wine lovers, with some great values,” says co-owner Pasha Heidari. Early standouts include approachable pours from iconic Italian estates alongside a growing selection of small producers embracing traditional, low-intervention methods.

The updates extend beyond the plate. A refreshed dining room and newly added patio make it an easy choice for al fresco evenings, while the restaurant’s original warmth and welcoming spirit remain firmly intact.

I’ve lived in many cities people know and love. NYC, London, Rome, Florence, Nice, Austin.

And then there’s Warsaw. It’s the one that inevitably gets a pause, quickly followed by, “Wait… why did you live in Warsaw?” That’s a story for another day, but the point is this: Poland, in general, is simply not on most people’s radar. And the version many imagine is decades out of date. (*No judgment — it was for me, too.)

These days, Warsaw is a thriving metropolis where historic façades meet modern design, where the energy is young and creative, and where the food scene, unexpectedly, is one of the best in Europe. It’s a city in the midst of a quiet but undeniable renaissance.

It's not top of mind when most people think of summer destinations. But come June, when the sidewalk cafes are in full swing and the sun stays up until nearly midnight, nobody seems in any hurry to go home. Neither will you.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Dating back to the 1300s, Warsaw’s history is long and complex. And in Warsaw, it’s not just something you learn about. It’s like an omnipresent feeling in the air. The relatively recent events of World War II still shape the city in ways that are both visible and deeply ingrained in its culture, even to casual visitors.

Nearly 85% of Warsaw was destroyed during that war. What stands today is the result of one of the most ambitious reconstruction efforts in history. Entire sections, including the picturesque Old Town, were painstakingly rebuilt using detailed 18th-century paintings by Bernardo Bellotto, known in Poland as Canaletto, along with photographs and archival records. That effort was so extraordinary that it earned UNESCO World Heritage status. Not for what survived, but for what was brought back.

And while there are still visible remnants of the communist era: concrete block buildings, stark lines, and Brutalist architecture, they’re only part of the story. Now, they sit alongside striking modern landmarks like Daniel Libeskind’s Złota 44 and Norman Foster’s Metropolitan Building, a visual reminder of just how much the city has evolved.

WHAT TO EAT

When it comes to food in Warsaw, it’s not what people expect. It’s so much better.

Polish food has a reputation for being heavy. To be fair, it can be. But that’s also part of the experience. You don’t come to Warsaw and skip the pierogi (fried, boiled, or baked dumplings), the kiełbasa (Polish sausage) or the placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes). Just lean back and loosen your belt.

The best way to start is with the most traditional version of all: the “milk bars.” These no-frills, cafeteria-style spots date back to the communist era and remain one of the most authentic ways to experience Polish comfort food. It’s not about ambiance — it’s about pierogi, soups, and hearty, home-style dishes at prices that feel almost unreal. Think of it as a glimpse into everyday Poland, unchanged in the best way. Bar Bambino, tucked just off Krucza Street, is one of the most iconic. Expect trays, long lines, and zero pretense, and some of the most satisfying, straightforward food you’ll eat on your vacation.

Zapiecek on Nowy Swiat Street offers a slightly more polished introduction. It’s still rooted in tradition, but very accessible — especially if it’s your first real encounter with pierogi. Order the pierogi ruskie — a classic filling of potato and farmer’s cheese — or go sweet with the dessert pierogi, especially those filled with deeply flaorful jagody (wild berries related to huckleberries).

But where the city really shines now is on the more elevated side of the dining scene — where that “heavy” reputation starts to shift. Don’t miss Ćma, from restaurateur Mateusz Gessler, where traditional Polish dishes are reimagined with a lighter, more refined hand. The gołąbki, cabbage rolls stuffed with veal and served in a gently tangy tomato-based sauce, are a standout, while the naleśniki, Poland’s take on crepes, come filled with farmer’s cheese and fruit in a way that feels both nostalgic and elevated. The restaurant is tucked inside Hala Koszyki, a European-style food hall that adds to the overall energy of the experience. Think Grapevine’s Harvest Hall, but with an even more distinctly hip, trendy, and elevated, old-world feel.

For something more classic, Stary Dom in the Mokotow neighborhood leans fully into old-world Polish hospitality. Think heavy wooden tables, a warm, lived-in atmosphere and a menu deeply rooted in tradition. Take my advice: order the beef tartare. It’s prepared tableside, transformed in front of you into a rich, perfectly balanced dish that’s as much performance as it is meal.

WHAT TO SEE + DO

Start in Old Town. Knowing it was rebuilt from paintings gives every pastel façade a different weight. From there, walk the Royal Route, which connects many of the city's most significantlandmarks and offers a snapshot of Warsaw's layered history and architecture.

You can't miss the Palace of Culture and Science Quite literally. This towering example of Soviet-era architecture in the heart of the city still sparks debate among locals. Some see it as an unwanted relic, others as an inseparable part of the city's identity. Either way, the panoramic views from the top are worth it.

For a deeper understanding of the city's past, the Warsaw Uprising Museum is essential. It's immersive, emotional, and incredibly well done. It’s exactly the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave. The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews is equally impactful, but in a different way. Set on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto, it traces 1,000 years of Jewish life in Poland through thoughtful, deeply engaging exhibits. It's expansive, nuanced, and one of the most important cultural institutions in the city.

Then shift gears completely. Head to the Praga neighborhood, once overlooked and now one of the city's most creative enclaves. It's grittier, sure, but that's the appeal. Galleries, street art, and the particular energy of a neighborhood still figuring out what it wants to be.

And when you need a reset, The Royal Baths Park (Łazienki) delivers. Spanning more than 200 acres, the palace and gardens offer a rare sense of calm in the middle of the city, with tree-lined paths, peacocks wandering freely, and the iconic Chopin monument, where free Sunday concerts in summer turn a slow afternoon into something to remember.

WHERE TO STAY

After a full day of taking it all in, where you stay matters just as much.

Along the Royal Route, RaffleEuropejski and Hotel Bristol, two historic icons that have defined luxury in Warsaw for generations, sit just steps from each other. The Bristol, open since 1901, remains the city’s classic grand hotel, with soaring ceilings, rich detailing and rooms that feel elegantly rooted in the past. Across the street, RafflesEuropejski, which reopened in 2018 after a meticulous restoration, offers a more contemporary interpretation, with expansive, light-filled rooms, curated art and a sense of understated polish that feels distinctly modern.

Both are destinations in their own right, anchored by their dining. The Bristol Café is a Warsaw institution, ideal for a slow morning or afternoon reset, while Europejski Grill at Rafflesdelivers one of the city’s most refined dining experiences.

For something more modern, Nobu Hotel Warsaw brings a sleek, global edge. Its striking, angular design, often compared to a contemporary reinterpretation of New York’s Flatiron Building, immediately sets it apart. Inside, the rooms are minimalist but warm, with thoughtful details and a calm, elevated feel. Home to the internationally renowned Nobu restaurant – and just across the street from the Hala Koszyki food hall, it offers a more low-key, insider experience, slightly removed from the main tourist corridor but still firmly connected to the city’s evolving energy.
