The Living Bridge is structured around three operative ideas: Traverse, Flow, and Weave. Traverse establishes the primary act of crossing — a clear structural spine that anchors movement across the river. Flow introduces curvature and continuity, allowing circulation, light, and program to move fluidly along and around this spine. Weave interlaces vertical and horizontal paths, connecting levels, programs, and viewpoints into a layered spatial network. Together, these strategies transform a linear crossing into a dynamic civic fabric, where structure, movement, and occupation intertwine to create a living, evolving threshold over the water.

Savannah, Georgia

The structure of the bridge consists of a series of robust concrete piles anchored into the riverbed, providing a stable and durable foundation. These vertical supports carry the load of a continuous concrete deck that spans across the river, creating a solid platform for circulation and programmatic spaces. The use of concrete not only ensures structural integrity and resistance to environmental conditions but also allows for clean lines and a monolithic appearance that complements the bridge’s

harmonious connection between people and the natural beauty of the marsh...”

As a part of SCAD Serve, the team’s mission was to design and create an innovative and purpose driven K9 training facility for Operation Patriots FOB; fostering community connection and support through the power of thoughtful optimized design.

Grounded in OPFOB’s belief that connection conquers isolation, the project transforms mission into architecture by carefully organizing human, canine, and training programs into a unified and highly functional environment. The facility is structured to balance operational efficiency with emotional experience, creating clear adjacencies between kennels, medical and grooming areas, administrative spaces, and adaptable gathering zones while maintaining acoustic separation and circulation clarity. Exterior training environments, including detection, patrol, and search-and-rescue zones, extend the architecture into the landscape, allowing realistic training scenarios to unfold within a controlled yet natural setting.

The design prioritizes spatial experience and purposeful engagement across the entire training facility. Rather than isolating functions, the architecture is organized around moments of connection — between handlers and dogs, individuals and community, and people and place. The facility fosters environments that accommodate gathering, interaction, and focused training, from open communal zones to intimate, quiet spaces for one-on-one connection.

Each spatial zone supports a specific mode of engagement:

• Spaces for gathering: places where group activities, briefings, and social interaction occur naturally.

• Spaces for small groups: intimate environments designed to support coaching moments, teamwork, and observation.

• Spaces for one-on-one connection: areas that cultivate trust and direct communication between handler and canine.

Through thoughtful sequencing of program and atmosphere, the design reinforces both operational performance and human/canine well-being, celebrating community, resilience, and shared purpose.

Be OPFOB

The 268-acre OPFOB site in Ridgeland, South Carolina, is defined by its dense tree canopy, open clearings, and existing water features that establish a calm, restorative environment. The landscape transitions between shaded woodland and expansive fields, creating natural zones that support both focused training and community gathering. Circulation paths and access roads structure movement across the property, while the tree buffers provide privacy, acoustic protection, and climatic moderation. Environmental analysis informed building orientation to maximize shade, prevailing breezes, and visual connections to the surrounding landscape. Rather than imposing on the site, the design responds to its existing rhythms — preserving mature vegetation, framing views toward open meadows and ponds, and integrating built form carefully within the natural terrain.

Concept

Nodes

The facility is organized as a series of interconnected nodes distributed across the site. Each node represents a distinct programmatic cluster — training, kennels, administration, or community spaces — structured according to functional relationships. This strategy breaks down the scale of the project while allowing each zone to operate efficiently and independently.

These nodes are carefully placed to establish clear spatial hierarchies and intuitive circulation paths. Between them, shared courtyards and covered connectors create visual and physical continuity, reinforcing movement and interaction. By linking program through open-air transitions and communal spaces, the design promotes connection while maintaining operational clarity and control.

The project is structured around a clear linear spine that organizes movement and defines the relationship between programs. This central axis provides intuitive circulation while separating high-intensity training areas from quieter administrative and support spaces to improve efficiency and acoustic control. Along the spine, moments of gathering are strategically placed to create opportunities for interaction, reflection, and community. The linear sequence allows the facility to unfold as a series of connected yet distinct zones, balancing operational clarity with spaces that support human and canine connection.

LUCERNA

a charter school for experiential learning at Savannah, GA

“...Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Concep tualization, and Active Experimentation...”

The experiential learning model places experience at the heart of education, transforming students into active participants in their own development. Built on a four-stage cycle—Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation—this approach encourages learners to engage directly with real-world situations before analyzing and applying what they have learned. Rather than simply receiving information, students explore, question, and interact with their environment as the starting point of understanding.

In a charter school dedicated to experiential learning, classrooms extend beyond traditional boundaries. Students participate in hands-on projects, collaborative problem-solving, fieldwork, design challenges, and community engagement. After each experience, they reflect critically on outcomes and perspectives, developing insights that evolve into broader concepts and theories. These ideas are then tested and refined through new applications, creating a continuous cycle of growth, iteration, and discovery.

This school is designed to facilitate hands-on, immersive learning experiences, with a focus on active participation and reflection. The architectural layout is composed of flexible, multi-purpose spaces that can easily be adapted for various activities and are composed of a variety of environments. The building was designed to allow river views from every part of its interior and fosters comfortable spaces of contemplation, reflection, and work. Its open interior spaces and combination of warm materials aim to create an experiential lear

“...Designed with an emphasis on structure...”

This concept is inspired by the diverse forms and movement of trees in Savannah, drawing from the vertical elegance of trunks, the twisting rhythm of branches, and the organic flow found in nature. The tower’s sculptural presence captures this natural dynamism through a shifting silhouette that changes as one moves around it. Light and shadow play across its surfaces throughout the day, enhancing its sense of motion and creating an everevolving visual experience. Rather than mimicking nature literally, the design abstracts its principles—growth, branching, and structural efficiency—into a refined architectural expression.

Exposed steel pipes define both the structural and aesthetic language of the tower, emphasizing clarity, transparency, and tectonic honesty. Each member is intentional, contributing simultaneously to stability and visual rhythm. The steel elements form a truss-like framework that maximizes strength while minimizing material use, reflecting the efficiency found in natural systems. Through this integration of structure and form, the tower becomes both an engineered landmark and a celebration of nature’s inherent logic and grace.
