LETTER FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
T
hank you for being a part of the Midwest Transplant Network community. On behalf of our board and staff, I am pleased to share our extraordinary results from 2019. Our mission is clear: to save lives by honoring the gift of organ and tissue donation with dignity and compassion. We helped fulfill it by providing 929 transplants in 2019, allowing 111 more people to be removed from the waiting list than in 2018. Those recipients can enjoy a richer life thanks to the generosity of a donor and the selfless act of each donor family. We compassionately worked with our hospitals to coordinate 282 organ donors, a 4% increase over 2018. Our tissue donor program provided healing through 1,896 tissue and eye donors. This translates into well over 175,000 people who will have their lives changed by a tissue transplant.
We take pride in developing strong, collaborative relationships with each of our professional partners. With your involvement and support, we can accomplish so much in delivering better healthcare to our community. Our hospitals; transplant centers; treasury and licensing offices; and countless others truly make a life-changing impact on donation. We hope you’ve been inspired by one of our Green Ribbon Champions, or possibly by a recipient or donor
family advocate. It is a distinct privilege to know how we are making a difference in the lives of those who desperately need us. Thank you for building meaningful relationships with Midwest Transplant Network and creating a legacy for our donors and donor families. ORGAN MTN had a record year for total number of recovered organ donors, total number of organs transplanted, and number of hearts, lungs, livers and kidneys transplanted in a year. The Organ Procurement department staff transplanted 111 more organs than last year — a 14% increase. Their 11 additional donors recovered compared to 2018 represents a 4% increase.

TISSUE In 2019, MTN’s Tissue Services department leaders changed their recovery staffing model to accommodate an increase in donor volume. They also began working with a new musculoskeletal processor, Pinnacle Transplant Technologies. The team helped meet higher demand for dermal tissue by increasing their dermis recoveries by 22% compared to the previous year. In 2019, MTN packaged 94,000+ grafts for transplantation for RTI Donor Services; RTI recognized these efforts by naming MTN a Gold Partner for 2019.

LAB The total number of tests MTN’s Laboratory department performed in 2019 increased 8% from the previous year. Lab staff expanded donor screening services to include tissue and added secured access to patient test information for MTN’s hospital partners. The lab welcomed two new leaders to the team: Associate HLA Laboratory Director Dr. Christina Bishop and Laboratory Services Manager Heath Hamilton.
