By Chris Lundy OCEAN GATE – It was such a hot day, it was nice to take a dip in the river – whether you wanted to or not. For those like the winners of the adult level Cardboard Boat Race, Lady Luck, they did a death drop into the shallow water almost immediately after coming ashore. Meanwhile, other contestants capsized in the first volley of waves. There’s a reason there has historically been a Titanic Award for the boat that “sinks the most spectacularly.”
Public Speaks Out Against Data Center Idea
By Chris Lundy MANCHESTER – While a redeveloper is thinking about installing a data center, hundreds of residents gave their thoughts on the matter. Usually there are few members of the public at Township Council meetings, but this one was standing room only, exceeding fire code. Council President Michele Zolezi opened with a statement that while
data centers are a permitted use in the redevelopment area, there is no project proposed. A warehouse in that area has been approved. She said since it hasn’t been proposed, it would be premature to discuss what could be. At this point, loud shouting drowned her out. Once it calmed down, she restarted, going back a bit in case anyone missed anything. (Data Center - See Page 11)

The event is a mainstay that anchors Ocean Gate Day. Three age groups worth of racers took to the water, trying hard to overcome the initial current. They paddled boats made predominantly out of cardboard, held together by duct tape and dreams. A variety of different designs were attempted. (Boat Race - See Page 4)
By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – Although South Seaside Park isn’t part of Berkeley any longer, they are still paying taxes to them. This means the de-annexation won’t impact this year’s taxes for the rest of Berkeley’s residents, officials said. South Seaside Park is a small portion of land between Seaside Park and Island Beach State Park. After a lengthy court battle, they were allowed to leave Berkeley and join Seaside Park this year. However, the state attorney general’s office has made a determination that Berkeley will continue to collect taxes from that area until the start of next year, even though the land and services are being taken care of by Seaside Park. South Seaside Park resident Kathy Fulcomer came to a recent Berkeley Township Council meeting to ask why her taxes are still going to Berkeley even though Seaside Park is performing all the work. Berkeley Township Attorney Lauren Staiger said this will likely be decided in court. That property represents more than $12 million in property taxes, Mayor John Bacchione said in an interview with The Berkeley Times after the meeting. “It’s not an easy task to replace that money.” Officials have been finding ways to cut costs without cutting services, he said. “It wasn’t easy keeping (the budget) down to what it is,” because of the cost of utilities, (Budget - See Page 4)
