Police Security Added To Council Meetings By Bob Vosseller JACKSON – There is now more police presence at Township Council meetings following an official’s request that officers ensure order until the November general election. However, the subject of that request feels he was the target of harassment by the administration for speaking out. Although the July 14 meeting was cancelled, had it taken place, there would have been police standing by to ensure that residents adhere to the five-minute rule when it comes to the public comment period. Council Vice President Guiseppi Palmeri requested Mayor Jennifer Kuhn renew police presence at meetings. In an email to the mayor, Council President Mordechai Burnstein, Business Administrator Charles Terefenko, Township Attorney Gregory McGuckin, Township Clerk Sandra Martin and Police Chief Mary Nelson, Palmeri formally requested “increased security measures at future meetings.” Palmeri stated in that email that a resident ignored Council President Burnstein’s request to cease speaking after his five minutes were up at the microphone during the prior council meeting. “From the moment one individual arrived, he engaged in repeated disruptive behavior, including heckling from the audience.” “What makes this even more concerning is that this individual currently serves on (Council Meetings - See Page 15)
Local Woman’s $65K Loss Highlights Growing Scam Threat By Stephanie Faughnan OCEAN COUNTY - A Berkeley Township woman had already lost $25,000 after allowing someone posing as a Microsoft representative to access her computer. Three days later, the scammers called again. This time, the caller claimed to be with Homeland Security and offered to help recover her money. She was instructed to withdraw $40,000 in cash, place it in a black box and meet an “agent” in the parking lot of Luigi’s Deli in South Toms River. She followed the instructions and handed over the money. When the same person returned seeking another $19,000, Berkeley Township detectives and (Scam Threat - See Page 12)
