By Andrew Rice BRICK - The annual celebration of environmental awareness and sustainable living, the Green Fair, returned to the township at the Bob Anstett Cultural Arts Center on Herbertsville Road. It was an opportunity for environmental awareness initiatives to reach out to the public. In addition, several booths had vendors with items for sale that fit the theme, such as homemade clothing or all-natural food products. New to the fair this year was the clothing
drive, where attendees brought slightly used, clean clothes to either exchange for other slightly used, clean clothes or just leave them at the event. All of the clothes that were left were later donated to those in need. All different types of clothes were accepted, so long as they were clean, in good shape, and season appropriate. The event had several guest speakers who were given the floor to talk about their specific issues. One of the speakers was from (Green Fair - See Page 4)
After Rainy Start To Summer, Shore Businesses Hope For Sunnier Days By Colleen Sheehan JERSEY SHORE - Persistent rain and cold temperatures throughout Memorial Day weekend kept crowds lighter than usual at the Jersey Shore, raising concerns about a slow start to the summer season. Memorial Day weekend is considered the unofficial start to summer and the kickoff for many seasonal businesses. Store owner Stephanie Bogetti of S. Bogetti Jewelry in Point Pleasant Beach described this weekend as very quiet and dismal. Bogetti said that she used the slower pace to prepare
her store for the busy months ahead, and offered her dresses at half price. “I’ve been getting my stuff ready,” Bogetti said. “I close in the winter, so this time has been helpful for my setup.” This year’s rainy forecast threatened the seasonal kickoff, with wet and windy conditions keeping some visitors away from the beaches and boardwalks. By Andrew Rice BRICK - Thousands of members of the Brick Memorial High School community braved the rain and the high winds to attend the vigil to mourn the loss and honor the memory of Jackson Daniel Mueller. The students held candles in memory of their peer. Prominent members of the Brick Memorial community were in attendance, such as Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Farrell. A small break in the rain occurred for the vigil, but it unfortunately came back, causing the attendees to be dispersed. Then, a small group of students and their families gathered near candles, balloons, and flowers that were set up at the spot where the accident occurred the day before. They stood out in the rain at the makeshift memorial to mourn the tragic accident. The 15-year-old was a lifelong resident of Brick whose life was cut short by a hit-and-run on the morning of May 19 as he was riding his bike to school. Jackson was just short of finishing his freshman year at Brick Memorial High School. While the family was robbed of a son, grandson, brother and nephew, the world won’t see him grow up to be an engineer, which was his chosen profession. As an honors student in the school’s STEM Program, he was expected to attend the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science in September. While attending Veterans Memorial Middle School, he had been an officer of the NJHS and served as treasurer for Student Council. In athletics, he ran track in high school, earned his black belt from Brick PPK, and played flag football for SJNFL Flag. (Vigil Held - See Page 4)
