Thanksgiving Through The Centuries By J. Mark Mutter TOMS RIVER - As we celebrate Thanksgiving this year with family and friends, let’s look back on how Toms River has celebrated our unique national holiday in years gone by.

The Pilgrims And The Fall Harvest We all know the basic story. In 1620, 102 passengers on a tiny, crowded ship called the “Mayflower” left Plymouth, England in search of religious freedom. They were Pilgrims. After a 66-day ocean

voyage, they anchored of f of C a p e C o d . During their journey to the New World, they had formed a “Compact” - requiring them to live together in a “civil body politic.” Their first winter here was difficult. Half of them died.

By the Fall of 1621, thei r lives had improved and the 53 survivors, over three days, celebrated a successful harvest. Some 90 Native Americans joined them. The Pilgrims did not call this gathering a “Thanksgiving,” but they did give thanks
