Community Garden Is Also A Learning Experience By Chris Lundy BERKELEY - There’s milkweed in a butterfly garden. There’s a honeybee hive box by the pumpkin patch. Both are there to bring pollinators to the Wrangle Brook Community Garden. In addition to these, other helpers have been coming once a week. Members of the ARC have been working in the garden. They pull weeds, plant seeds, and pick ripe fruits and vegetables. Lisa spent some of her time pulling dead leaves to keep the plant healthy. “He’s bad. He’s got to get taken out. We can’t have bad leaves,” she explained. Kathy Toohey, instructional specialist with the ARC, said they come once a week as long as it’s not too hot out. They planted seedlings in April and take pictures of the progress. (Garden - See Page 4)
Court: South Seaside Park Can Leave Berkeley By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – A Superior Court Judge decided that South Seaside Park can leave Berkeley Township and petition to join Seaside Park. Township officials announced that they will appeal this decision. For many years, residents in SSP
have claimed that they are not treated as equals by the rest of Berkeley. By a strange quirk of history, this area – which is between the borough of Seaside Park and Island Beach State Park – is part of Berkeley Township. Shore residents usually pay more in (Court - See Page 5)

SSP Has A History Of Trying To Leave
By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – A large group of South Seaside Park residents took Berkeley Township to court because they wanted to leave Berkeley Township. In 1975. While this same thing is happening right now, it’s a case of history repeating itself. According to a New York Times article dated Dec. 7, 1975 (on page 111), 80 percent of the community’s voters signed petitions
to leave Berkeley and join Seaside Park. “The South, Seaside Park Taxpayers Association, having been denied the right to secede by the Berkeley Township Committee, has filed a suit in Superior Court in which it seeks to overturn the Berkeley decision and thus be free to join Seaside Park.” Back then, the issues included children being bused to Bayville and police being “too far away patrolling Pelican Island.” (SSP - See Page 10)
