Financial Empowerment is Rolling Mobile Your Way!

Letter From The President

Macomb County Launches Financial Empowerment Macomb Community Action is one of the State’s largest action agencies and exists to leverage federal and state resources to address local causes and symptoms of poverty. The agency is uniquely attached to Macomb County government and collaborates with several partner organizations to provide programs that create sustainable pathways to independence; which now includes Financial Empowerment. The Fifth Third eBus: Family and Finances For a dozen years now Fifth Third Bank has been ‘taking it to the streets’ with the eBus, bringing financial resources, basic needs programming and counseling services to the neighborhoods of Southeastern Michigan. The eBus tour always occurs in August which is traditionally a month when families gather for reunions and children try to squeeze every last drop of fun out of summer vacation. If your family is anything like mine, after you catch up on old news you immediately compare notes on what plans are ahead for you and your brood. As you look around at the kids playing and grandparents looking on, you may be dreaming out loud about a new house to consolidate the family, a college education for your oldest child, a new direction you want to take with a job or perhaps even a small business aspiration that has been burning inside you for years. In southeast Michigan there has never been a better time to dream those dreams. And central to realizing any of them in your future is a financial plan to make them happen. The eBus can help get you on your way in every one of those situations, and more. On the e-Bus this year we will be celebrating home ownership and financia l awareness. Some of the features include: • The Fifth Third Down Payment Assistance Program • The Michigan Chronicle ‘Rediscover Detroit’ campaign • Home Sweet Home Tuesday’s • The Job Seekers Workshop • Empower U financial education workshops • Credit counseling In addition to these programs, a whole host of partners will attend eBus tour stops to distribute basic service benefits including DTE, Project Healthy Living, U-SNAP -BAC, Hurley Hospital, Southwest Solutions and many more that are listed on our schedule in this publication. Check the schedule and climb aboard. Now is the time to make decisio ns for your financial future and it could start by planning to visit the Fifth Third eBus while it is in Detroit this year. David F. Girodat Regional President Fifth Third Bank, Eastern Michigan

We offer programs such as Head Start 0-5, Supportive Services to Veteran Families (SSVF), Community Development (CDBG, HOME and Weatherization), Meals on Wheels, rent and utility assistance as well as food assistance through the agency’s nonprofit arm, The Macomb Food Program. This comprehensive list of services reaches thousands of customers annually. According to the Agency’s director, Rhonda Powell, “our customers must have access to resources that build assets and support long term sustainability, if we are serious about addressing poverty.” On September 1, 2016, in partnership with Fifth Third Bank, MCA will host a vendor fair centered on personal and financial well-being, from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The event will feature ebus services offered by Fifth Third Bank and will be supported by partners who provide: Health screenings, mobile dentistry, recreational activities for children, food vendors, financial literacy seminars, rent and utility assistance, face painting, credit and banking services, and much more. The event will be held at Macomb County’s newly opened “Family Resource Center,” which is the result of a unique partnership with Mount Clemens Community Schools to ensure that a school building once closed for declining enrollment remains a viable resource for children and families in the County. For more information about the Financial Fair please visit our website at www.mca@macombgov.org or call 586-469-6999.

Rolling in to Help Homebuyers Find Their

Loretta Humphrey-Cruz Each summer since 2004, the Fifth Third eBus has rolled into Southeastern Michigan to bring financial empowerment resources to residents in our communities. This year we anticipate that the Fifth Third 2016 eBus Tour will be bigger and better than ever. During our annual eBus tour we visit communities across Southeastern Michigan to bring information and resources to the communities that we serve. And, because of our commitment to you, the Fifth Third eBus has become the most highly visible and impactful financial empowerment program the Bank offers. One initiative that we offer on the bus is homeownership education for first time home buyers to help address the ever increasing need for affordable housing. In 2015, we rolled out our Home, Sweet, Home Tuesday events as part of the Fifth Third eBus tour. Each Tuesday during the bus tour we will help potential first-time homebuyers learn to slice through the red tape that is often entangled around the house they would like to eventually call home. The home purchasing process can be a very bewildering endeavor for just about any first-time homebuyer. Even a seasoned homebuyer can

4 • Fifth Third Bank | August 2016

be tripped up with the complexities of the purchasing process. Each Home, Sweet, Home Tuesday eBus event focuses on homebuyer education designed to help educate and demystify the process. Nonprofit homebuyer counseling agencies and other nonprofit organizations are partnered with the Bank and will be on board to help people understand the ins and outs of buying a home before they begin the purchasing process. Potential homeowners will have access to the tools they need to make an informed decision and have information to help them avoid costly mistakes common to the home buying process. In addition to providing an opportunity to sit down one-on-one with a credit/financial counselor, a homebuyer workshop will also be conducted to help potential homeowners understand: •The importance of good credit as a homebuyer •Budgeting •How to work with a realtor •The mortgage process •Down payment assistance resources

It is crucial that potential homeowners are armed with as much information as possible in order to ensure their home buying experience is rewarding and are confident that they have made a sound investment for themselves and their family’s future. Our nonprofit counseling partners and other homeownership experts will be there to help shed light and individuals develop a plan to repair or maintain their credit as they prepare themselves to become homeowners. In addition to the workshops, one valuable tool that will be available on the bus this year is our Fifth Third Bank Down Payment Center. Down payment assitance information will be available at the fingertips of our guests on the bus. Fifth Third Bank has just introduced its new down payment assistance program where eligible borrowers may qualify to receive 3% up to $3,600.00 toward the purchase of a new home. Information on other down payment assistance programs will also be available. Let’s face it, a home is the single largest purchase most people will ever make. It’s where your family calls home. It’s important that you get it right. Our Home, Sweet, Home Tuesday events are listed on the eBus tour schedule on the last page.

Fifth Third eBus at the NWAC: Homeownership Education, Financial Empowerment and More!

Jordan Jackson People often hear the term community used in a variety of ways. However in most peoples’ view, a community is a group of people living together and sharing a common set of values, interests, and goals. There are many great communities located within Detroit. The Northwest Activities Center (NWAC), located in Northwest Detroit, embodies this concept in an exemplary manner. For over 40 years, the Northwest Activities Center has been the heart and soul of the Northwest Detroit community. The Center serves over 300,000 Detroit residents per year by providing an active and safe environment to interact with those around them. Located at the corner of Meyers Road and Curtis Ave, the NWAC address the recreational needs of everyone in the community. Whether it is Michigan Works!, an anchor tenant, assisting job seekers in learning to construct a high quality resume, or Jazzy Kat, a program that helps to enrich children by helping them develop critical thinking skills as they learn in an active and fun environment. The center help enrich those within it and it also inspires. The NWAC hosts a number of organizations that inspire youth to follow their aspirations and goals. The National Conference of Artists (NCA), also located inside Northwest, helps children to discover and explore their artistic abilities and challenges them to express themselves to their fullest potential. Knight’s Martial Arts will not only train children’s bodies, but they also train young minds and encourage them to think beyond today and begin to plan and prepare for the future. The NWAC missions states that:

“It is our mission to provide programs and activities for youth, families and seniors that enhance the quality of life in the Detroit community that are cost effective.” On August 9th, the Northwest Detroit community will have yet another opportunity to come together. NWAC will be hosting the Fifth Third Bank eBus, a financial empowerment program that will be visiting the center for a third year. This event is designed to help financially empower individuals of all ages by providing financial literacy awareness. The event includes partnerships with nonprofit organizations

across metropolitan Detroit that will be bringing resources whose aim is to enhance the quality of life of the Northwest Detroit community residents. The eBus event goes from 12:00p to 5:00p and will include health screenings, financial empowerment workshops, dance and self-defense demonstrations by the summer camp participants and other activities. There will be a first-time homebuyer workshop from 1:00p – 2:00p. Community residents will also have an opportunity to bring documents to shred compliments of AARP. The day will be filled with activities that promise to provide education and entertainment. All are welcome to attend this community event. For more information regarding the eBus and where it will be traveling you can visit Fifth Third Bank’s website at www.53.com.
