A Word of Caution! BY JIM DUKE CONTRIBUTING WRITER
W
ith the winter’s snow melting away and several periods of torrential rains experienced in most locales across the Upper Peninsula, it’s little wonder that more trails and back roads haven’t been damaged in one form or another. In many cases the run-off has been significant enough for washouts and some dangerous hazards have developed. While it is true these washouts are fairly common in the late spring season, it is rare that an entire roadway, or trail, disappears and requires major repair to put it back to a safe and usable condition. As the snowmobiles are put away and the off-road vehicles are prepared for use, here is a word to the wise! Be extra cautious when heading out into the woods or using some back-

roads for your adventures, even if you have traveled over that particular trail or two-track many times previously. Conditions change with the seasons and almost without fail, there will be a waterhole, a failed culvert, or a new beaver dam that wasn’t there the last time you were over that path. Like little children, many can’t resist the opportunity to go splashing through that new water puddle, even though they have no idea how deep it might be or what could be hidden under the surface of that muddy mess. One close associate grinning widely said, “that’s why we have a winch on it”, then adding “that’s part of the fun.” But that being said, it’s all fun & games until someone gets hurt, and then everything changes! Driving the same two-track for a

few miles to get to the main trail, it’s best to go slow and make sure the surface hasn’t become unstable. Even when riding on the primary trails in a designated system, it’s best not to be running at a speed where it’s impossible to stop in a short distance, should a hazard appear in front of you. What may appear to be a long straight stretch of trail with no obstructions could be hiding any number of pitfalls. Just such a condition occurred recently in the Hiawatha National Forest An inviting stretch of trail, hard not to drive a bit faster than allowed, but danger may lurk just ahead.
CALUMET when the several days of rain caused a major washout on a forest road that is part of designated trail #7 in Alger County. Fortunately, the washout was observed well in advance and the lead vehicle was able to stop in plenty of time. Under different circumstances it could have been catastrophic. There are some unsubstantiated reports of other floodings, washouts, and even some logging operations that can cause temporary trail closures, so it is always best to know before you go and heed a word of caution. In a single incident recently, a group of four SXS were on a trip with scheduled stops for fuel along the way. Unfortunately, after several miles into the ride they came across a trail closure with no alternate routing, and they had to do some considerable backtracking. With fuel running low and still well into the wilds of the forest, some of the machines became disabled. Two of the four units had the foresight to bring along spare containers of fuel, so they pooled their resources, put all
the fuel into a single unit, and prayed it would be sufficient to get to a place where fuel would be available. While the other three units sat idled just off the trail and waited. Mobile phones were of no use due to lack of service, and the minutes seemed like hours, but eventually the sound of a vehicle could be heard coming, and it was their companion with fuel enough to get them back to the gas station. Although in this instance all turned out well, it could have resulted in a tragic outcome had it been only one unit alone or had no one thought to bring additional containers of fuel along. To summarize, it’s always best to plan ahead and know what to expect along the selected route, to bring some snacks, water, and extra fuel, to always let someone who isn’t going along know where you plan to go and approximate time you will return, and above all else, unless it’s absolutely necessary, don’t go out alone! •

he original Rousseau Bar and hotel were built around the turn of the 19th century. The homestead purchased by Edward Rousseau, who had logging from Pori to the Firesteel Rivers was born in Quebec in 1858 and came to the U.P. as a surveyor for the Soo Line built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the 1880s. The railroad brought in people and supplies and hauled out logs and lumber. In addition to the Bar/Hotel, there was a store and Post Office where the little shack on the corner now presides. Prohibition and the decline in logging closed the business. After prohibition, Ed Penegor opened the existing Rousseau Bar in 1936 by moving a building from the Pori CCC Camp around the corner on Pori Road to its new locations at 26137 Dishneau Road 86 years ago. A portion of the actual bar was moved from the hotel to the Penegor Bar, which is affectionately called Mahogany Ridge by those that have been coming for years. Its clientele then consisted of locals, hunters and loggers and has expanded to include snowmobilers from far and wide, ATV’ers and side-by-side aficionados, vacationers,

motorcyclists and tourists and just anyone out looking for their home-away-fromhome bar. The Bar has had 10 owners and a few names: Penegor Tavern, Joe’s Bar, Art’s Bar, Denny’s Dugout, and lastly, Rousseau Bar. You can still see the sidewalks that existed from an earlier time. The Rousseau Bar does seem to be in the middle of nowhere, but the ride is so beautiful, especially in the summer and fall. Snowmobiler’s can take Trail 12, off the Bill Nicholl’s Trail and ATV and Side-by-sides can get there via the ORV East Connector Route. We are happy to be a bar out in the middle of nowhere. That’s what makes us so unique because one doesn’t expect to find a bar where we are yet so many people have heard about us. We hear all the time, “I was wearing your shirt [down in Florida] and someone came up to me and said they know where that’s at.” A FEW THINGS THAT MAKE US UNIQUE One of the cool things about Rousseau Bar is that you can write your name on the ceiling. We have camps or groups that come every year and it’s pretty cool to see the years added each time they visit us. People like to speculate how many names are up there. It’s even extended in to the bathrooms. Going to the bathroom is up hill both ways! The “hump” gets higher every year and we are certain the family fortune is buried there. If you are missing us, during the winter we do a deer/ weather report that you can see on our facebook page. We started feeding the deer about 7 years ago and on a good day we can have 100 deer in the area. Our average deer count is 50 and people have started to come and help feed the deer. We have a nice menu of appetizers and hamburgers. We also have an extensive clothing line so you can have a memento of your visit. Get Twisted Where the Blacktop Ends… Twisted Trails Off-Road Park BY DONNA SULIVAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER
T
wisted Trails started as a vision by one of the owners with some of his buddies and is now the largest Off Road Park in Michigan at 400 acres. Siblings Dale and Donna Humphrey continue to make this dream grow. Starting with just a couple events a year on 100 acres has transitioned into being open 7 days a week for the first time this year! The General Store operates 10am to 6pm daily with extended hours for special events

on Fridays and Saturdays (9am to 10pm). The convenience of the on-site rustic campground is tough to beat. Within a few feet of the trail, you can ride your off-road rig right into the park. After a day’s ride, kick back around the bonfire for a little rest and relaxation. There are a few electrical sites and if you don’t get one of those you are welcome to pack your generator for your trip. Camping is convenient for off-roading fun, but it was also
designed to accommodate the 20 or so special events scheduled throughout the year. Those 1-2 early year events that started on the original 100 acres have grown to over 20 events throughout the year with four concerts and four races that challenge even the professional drivers that have had the pleasure to hit the Twisted Trails of Northern Michigan! In fact, Twisted Trails is wrapping up the WTCM Country Campout, one of a few they partner with Midwestern Broadcasting that helps support the veteran 22-2-None group for 2022. This is an organization that hits home as they have family that have served. Dale and Donna’s grandfather is a WWII vet, and Donna’s son is currently deployed. Their deputy of security and the gentleman that runs the Schwenk’in Wagon serving scrumptious food off the grill at all their events are both veterans. They have extended hours over the Fourth of July where you can play from 10am-10pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the weekend to celebrate our countries’ freedom. Also on October 26th the National Day of Deployed Service Members, all military current and previous service members get in free at Twisted Trails as a thank you for your service. the year on July 30th that will test your endurance with 90 minutes of twists and turns throughout 4 miles of the park. Twisted Trails will close down on July 29th for set up and July 30th get your motors revving for race day! Over 60 participants from all over the country come to test their skills to see if they have what it takes to be number one. Then Summer DOG PARTY kicks off on August 5th with a weekend of camping, late wheeling, trail riding, mud races, a concert, poker run, heading through the Copemish Heritage Days Parade and a whole lot of fun! After this event they close down for a week to set up all the obstacles for the on foot DK5k Tough Mudder held on August 13. The course obstacles are looked at as challenges veterans face in everyday life and this event is set up not only to help raise funds but to help raise awareness for the challenges that veterans go through every day. With their growing dream, the sign showing the expansion of the new 40x72 ft. General Store with bathrooms, showers and new dump station says it all; when they started selling tickets to events from an E-Z UP tent in a field years ago this vision continues to grow year after year. The dirt is kicked up and you can almost hear the nails going into the wood on this great amenity so you can clean a day’s worth of mud off at the end of the night! Before you know it this project will be completed and

something else will put a spark in their eye to improve things for everyone to come enjoy! One of those sparks that started last month was the excitement to bring Off-Road Adventure Tours to Twisted Trails, teaming up with Greater North Power Sports and Rentals they are able to offer SXS and ATV tours to their guests. Two hour guided tours through the twisting winding trails you will be sure to have a good time. Their guides know all the right turns and must-see lookout points along the routes to give you the best ride possible, they will keep you out of the deep mud and get you back to the parking lot safe and sound. They have your next adventure waiting for you, all you need to do is call to book it. You know when you think of an Off-Road Park you think of just mud and dirt but at Twisted Trails Off-Road Park there is so much more than that. Here you can get out on the trails and trail ride the miles and miles of winding trails through beautiful northern Michigan. You get to enjoy nature at its finest and if you are lucky see some wildlife in the process. There are trails with sand, a gravel pit area, swampy areas and rocky terrain to challenge your skill. Most exciting is the mud pit that will be 3 times the size of what it has been! There is also a half mile short course track that is great with curves and jumps for SXS’s, ATV’s

and dirt bikes. With the growing number of families that enjoy Twisted Trails, they are working on adding a special trail specifically for kids under 12. They want to give kids the opportunity to learn to ride with parent supervision and have fun too, continuing the next generation of off-roaders. With 400 acres they have trails that are easy for the novice beginner who just got a new rig and there are trails that can take you to the next stage, all the way to where they recommend winches and lockers because you might be in a tough spot without them. At the end of the night at the top of the bowl is the most amazing sunset cresting over the tips of the trees where a picture just cannot do it justice, you will need to come see this absolutely breathtaking view for yourself. he biggest and one of the best known mudding events will take place on August 16-21. The Michigan Mud Jam will once again be hosted at the Iosco County Fairgrounds in Hale, Michigan. Michigan Mud Jam features a variety of events including: Freestyle, Royal Rumble (Team Racing), Open Pits, Side by Side Racing and Tuff Trucks. Not to mention the spectator events, like Mr. Mudder and Ms. Mudder and other fun contests. All this is topped off with a DJ in the evening. The huge party, that started in 2003 will continue on strong for after only missing one year for COVID. This year 90 Mega trucks will be in attendance coming from Florida, Georgia, Texas, New York,

Minnesota and many more. But according to Ron Heal, co-owner of Michigan Mud Jam it is not all the trucks or all the mud that means the most to him. The best of part of the week is “getting to talk to all of the people and having those great conversations.” SCHEDULE OF EVENTS The event will kick off on Monday with the gates opening at noon. There will be VIP vendor food from 5 pm to 7 pm. A concert will begin at 9pm to conclude the first day. On Tuesday, the gates will once again open at noon, with a gate fee of $100 for early access admission. There will be truck and SXS show at the fire hall from 6 pm to 8 pm. A DJ will start at 9 pm. The gates will open earlier on
Wednesday, the pits will be open from 8 am to 8 pm. The gate fee will be $80 and the pits will be open all day. The SXS races will start at 9 pm, with Tuff Trucks starting at 10 pm. The DJ will return after the Tuff Trucks competition. The pits will be open again at 9 am on Thursday and they will be open until 8 pm that evening. When the lights come on the off road racing series will take to the track. The night will conclude once again with a DJ. The action will really ramp up on Friday. The day will start off with open
mud pits from 9:30 am 11 am. After the open pit will be the Royal Rumble Race from 12 pm to 3 pm. The event is made up of 8 teams, with 5 trucks per team. There will be a break in action from the end of the races until 6 pm. At 6:00, the championship bracket rounds will begin with the Royal Rumble Race. At 9 pm, the Mr. Mud Jam obstacle course will commence. At the same time will be the Ms. Mud Jam obstacle course and bikini competition. The day will conclude with tugs starting at 10 pm and going late into the night. The event will end on Saturday, but will still have quite a bit of action. The day will once again start with an open mud pit at 9:30 am until 2:30 pm. There will be a break for a freestyle competition at 3 pm and then a return to the mud pits at 4:30 pm until dusk. The Hoopty Cruise contest will be located in the grandstands and will be at 7:00 pm. The Freedom competition will be right after at 7:15 pm, where you will need to be wearing all the red,white and blue that you can find. With your free tickets into the event, you get free rustic camping. Which makes it worth it to go for the whole weekend. There are also a lot of trails that allow ORV enthusiasts to visit the surrounding area and allow you to get away from the party and go enjoy some riding as well. While the event is meant for everyone to enjoy and have a good time, there are a few safety rules to keep in mind. Which is kind of a must with a big crowd. continued on page 18

HERE’S THE TOP 10 1. Do not tear up the grounds. 2. Do not dump any waste. 3. Do not save any camping spots for anyone else. 4. Do not sell anything unless you are an approved vendor. 5. No drones, no exceptions. 6. All trucks entering the pit, are entering under their own risk and must have solid pull points and must be trailered in and out of the pits. 7. Any Sport quads, ATV’s with a clutch, dirt bikes and 3 wheelers are not allowed.
8. You may not ride in the back of trucks in the mud pit, no exceptions. 9. There is no fighting at any time, if anyone fights, the entire camp will be sent home. 10. All ORV riders must follow a trail into town or you will be ticketed. If you can keep the top ten in mind and have a great time, this group also puts on a couple other events throughout the year. The Michigan Madness event takes place June 24-26 at the Iosco County Fairgrounds and features ATV/ SXS action and events.
Then on October 8, the group will host an Outlaw Halloween Bog and Outlaw Racing Series. Trick or treat starts right after the racing. While visiting the area for these great events in Hale, make sure to to stop by the local businesses and sponsors like Roger’s
Family Foods and Hale Hardware. The Michigan Mud Jam has become an event that you will not want to miss and has become one of the most popular events in the country. Make sure to visit Hale, Michigan during August 16-21. •

What’s Your Off-Roading Style? BY MELISSA SULIVAN
O
ff roading has long been a popular hobby but over the last few years the sport has gained a lot of traction. In addition to plenty of opportunities to hit the trails off road racing events are popping up all over the state bringing a different type of excitement for both spectators and drivers. You do not have to be a race professional to enjoy a day at the racetrack, that is part of what makes the sport so thrilling. Speed is not always the key to winning, driving skills, style and the track conditions play a big role in how your race plays out. There are many different types of off-road races to try from drag races to hill climbs, each one providing its own challenges and thrills. My husband and I have raced in all types of races with our SXS and even developed our own racing series. There are a lot of important things to know if you want to get into racing your SXS, but I feel Knowing what style of racing you and your vehicle are most suited for is a great place to get started. There really is something for everyone, I have raced alongside professionals, amateurs, kids and even raced with a guy who was left paralyzed from the waist down after an ATV accident. No matter the level of experience I always notice the drivers always seem to have the same amount of fun!
WHAT ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF OFF-ROAD RACES: There are many different types of off-road racing and each one is unique. Each type of racing has set standards for the way they conduct and score the race. Depending on the race you may compete in some types of races with a variety of vehicles or be restricted to specific types. The great thing about amateur or outlaw races is the opportunity to try out racing without the requirement to build a race specific vehicle. We have raced with a range from the casual participant who uses the same car that they trail ride to the hard-core driver who has a dedicated competition car, special tires, and uses lots of shop time tweaking and making it faster. In my experience all types of off-road racing are fun but there are some styles that you will love and some that you will not enjoy as much. Below I’ve listed some types of SXS off road races that you will see popping up in Michigan this summer. AUTOCROSS: A short flat track with multiple rightand left-hand turns make a “mini-road course”. The races could be a ‘One Lap Wonder’ style where one driver at a time runs the course to see who can
get the fastest lap time without going off course. You may also see this type of course run single or double elimination style with multiple drivers on the course. This type of race features usually a ¼ - ½ mile long track with multiple tight turns, meaning you can expect slower race speeds. Despite the low overall speeds during competition, it’s still one of the most intense forms of off-road racing you can enter, especially on ice! This type of track usually will not have jumps on the course and the barriers to entry are low so many drivers are able to be quite competitive at it, regardless of their level of experience. HILL CLIMBING Hill-climbing is a course that is mostly uphill. Drivers race against the clock rather than each other, with the goal of having the fastest time up the course. Sometimes the hills are so steep, speed alone doesn’t determine the winner. Some vehicles will not be able to make it to the top of the course, so they’re not eligible to win. If it comes down to it distance can also be the determining factor for a win. This type of race happens year-round and is a popular type of race at ski hills at the end of the season. This type of track could snake through a few turns or be ran where two drivers are taking a pass continued on page 20

at the same time on separate, mirrored tracks. DRAG RACING This is the most popular entry level style of off-road racing. This type of race is a straight line ranging from 300’ to 1/4 mile. This type of racing is based on speed and horsepower and tends to be the most competitive style of high-speed racing. Drivers can race the clock or side by side in a grudge race with money on the line. I have learned each race varies with drag racing and that adds to the excitement. This type of race may start with a light or with the drop of an arm, make sure you don’t jump either one. There may be special rules in place too like “chase is a race”, meaning it’s important to pay attention to the rules or you may lose. Drag racing is the easiest type of race to participate in but can get complicated with rules, which may vary depending on where you are racing. SHORT COURSE This is a type of racing held on a closed course track varying in length from ½-1 mile long with multiple laps made. The track will include include turns, jumps, and off camber conditions. While this type of race is usually run with 2-4 SXS on the track at once, it can be run in a

The jumps on the track will range from small humps designed to upset your suspension to tabletop jumps designed for bigger air. ENDURANCE/BAJA DESERT STYLE RACING Many people in Michigan dream of the chance to experience a true desert Baja race. In desert racing you race hundred of miles in one race. Based on
the name alone, some people think that this type racing is specifically in a desert location but that is not true. There are opportunities to run endurance races in your SXS here in Michigan which test your ability to drive through varying terrain, on long courses, for hours without stopping. This type of racing requires patience and being able to pace yourself. If you push too hard or over drive, you could break your vehicle and end up not finishing the race. MUD BOGGING Mud bogging is off-road racing with a “course” that’s a mud pit. This style racing is not usually based on speed, participants want to be the vehicle that makes it farthest across the pit. The race will usually still be times, just in case several SXS make it all the way across. If you plan to compete in mud bogging, you will want to have fourwheel drive. Other than that, different classes of vehicles race in various categories. DIRT OVAL TRACK Few forms of off-road racing evoke as much passion as those that hit the dirt oval tracks. If you can’t figure out why, just a few laps on a dirt oval with multiple SXS surrounding will get you up to speed, both figuratively and

literally. This type of racing is intense and high speed. You only will make left turns and some drivers make modifications that help the car turn left. Tracks may also require specific tires like Hoosiers. At these races you will have heat races which allow you to feel out the track and determine where you will start in your feature race. Winners are determined in the order of crossing the finish line after a certain number of laps, ranging from 6-15 laps. SNOW & ICE RACING Snow and ice racing takes place in the winter and tracks may be on frozen lakes and rivers. When it comes to winter SXS racing we have raced each type, except for mud bogging, on snow or ice and it really ads another level of excitement to the race. Things you have mastered on dirt you will
have to re master as you brave the elements of northern Michigan. You may also find yourself looking for extra traction. One of the main differences racing on ice is that most participants use studded tires for traction. I’m sure that there are many people out there who have always wanted to race but think that their time has passed. “I’m too old”, “I have no experience”, or “my motor is nothing special” I hear people say often. None of those things matter it is about the fun and the experience, the winning and the prizes are just a bonus. Off-Road racing is a lifestyle and full of some of the greatest people you will ever meet. I have seen competitors pull parts off their cars to help another get back on the track. The camaraderie is honestly I believe the biggest payout you will ever
experience at any track. I encourage everyone to try a race, your first time will be scary, but the adrenaline rush you will feel after is incomparable. The first time you win will feel even better! Take it from me, an amateur woman off road racer, there is a type of off-road racing for everyone. That fact is why I put together the races that we do. I love giving others the opportunity to fall in love with off road racing regardless of their background. If you are worried about crashing, consider the fact that racing your SXS is safer than trail riding thanks to required safety gear and one way traffic. You are just as likely to get in an accident trail riding. At our races we have participants that are 6 – 72 and the smiles are just as big on both faces come race day! What is a SORVA? BY JIM DUKE CONTRIBUTING WRITER
I
t’s amazing that there are still so many folks that enjoy snowmobiling, and for that matter any motorized activity, who have no idea what a SORVA is or how important such organizations are to the existence of the activities they seem to take for granted. Although the acronym has only gained popularity in the last decade or so, it has been around for many years beyond that, but with a slightly different meaning. In the original version, the term SORVA identified clubs and user groups as an organization of sportsmen who utilized an off-road vehicle of some sort to make the activity they were experiencing more successful, and quite honestly, enjoyable. Sportsmen’s Off-Road Vehicle Association or SORVA was used for almost every recreational sporting group that employed the use of a motorized convey-

ance, whether it was for hunting, fishing, camping, or just going for an enjoyable ride on a country backroad or forest twotrack. Eventually, when the snowmobiling community and some of the All-Terrain Vehicle clubs began joining forces to bolster memberships, the “S” was to identify the snowmobile rather than the sportsman, and many clubs became known as SORVA’s. During a series of interviews and discussions with some members of both the combined clubs and those that have elected to remain a single entity whether it be snowmobile, ATV, or a different form of off-road motorized recreation, and the reasons for either merging or not, both have merit. For example, there are snowmobile clubs that have been in existence for many years, but for some reason have failed to recruit new members. As the sus-

taining members grow older their numbers become fewer and they find themselves unable to perform the required maintenance to keep the trails in a safe condition. Without new and younger members, it may become necessary to dissolve the club. Their salvation comes in the form of an ATV club willing to merge and take on part of those responsibilities since both use the same multi-use trails. For the most part, members of the ATV club are much younger and certainly more energetic. It becomes a win-win for both groups, the membership grows, and the club flourishes. While there are a number of clubs and other groups that still employ the Sportsman portion of the acronym, there are snowmobile clubs also that prefer to remain snowmobile exclusive, and so it should be for those with no desire to mingle
or can see no benefit in a merger. Still, for the most part, with just so many trails available for all categories to use, it only makes sense that combining efforts to improve on existing trails and for the development of new ones would be of benefit to all user groups. In discussions with administrators of the programs governing both snowmobile and ORV’s, there is limited funding available for trail maintenance, equipment purchases, and other expenses related to the overall upkeep and everyday operations of clubs and/or grant sponsors responsible for those activities. Snowmobile grant sponsors have priority of trail usage for just four months while the other off-road groups have the other eight months to enjoy the trails, but as far as funding is concerned, the snowmobilers pay the bulk of the cost to keep the trails smooth and safe year-
• Indoor Hot Tub NEWBERRY round, and keeping records is a necessary (mandatory) requirement. For those dual-use clubs and sponsors that maintain trails throughout the entire year, they are still required to keep separate records and logs in order to be eligible for reimbursement of expenses. There are other requirements and restrictions that must be adhered to as well, for example, equipment purchased with snowmobile program funds cannot be utilized in the maintaining of ORV trails, even though those same trails are designated snowmobile trails from December 1 until March 31. The reasoning is the grooming equipment is not manufactured for smoothing dirt, therefore, the clubs, or grant sponsors, must procure separate equipment, either using ORV program funding or by other means. While it is true the dual clubs, or grant sponsors, are eligible for and have access to funds from both programs, those funds must not be inter-mingled and every dollar from each program must be accounted for. As complicated as it may appear to someone not familiar with the ins & outs of each program, the SORVAs have made it a compatible endeavor and consequently, both programs have benefited from it. Within the past decade more and more snowmobile clubs have merged with their dirt riding counterparts with some very positive results. In fact, a few years ago the Michigan Snowmobile Association, at the urging of the cognizant DNR agencies, amended their Articles of
Incorporation and bylaws to accommodate both the snowmobilers and the offroad vehicle enthusiasts and became the Michigan Snowmobile and ORV Association, or MISORVA. Of course, as it is with any change in structure from the long-established association to a new & improved organization, there will be a percentage of members in both groups that oppose the changes and any attempts at a merger. So it was within the MSA Board of Directors and caused a few to resign their positions, and some to even quit the groups altogether. Be that as it may, the state association not only survived the dissension, but from all outward appearances, has flourished in spite of it Don’t look for a definition of SORVA in the dictionary, it isn’t there, but for those who enjoy outdoor motorized recreational activities regardless of the month, or the season, they already know what a SORVA is, what it does, and why everyone just described here should belong to one. For those few still uninformed, an unofficial description of a SORVA is a group of like-minded individuals, usually volunteers, whose dedication is unmatched for making everyone’s experiences with nature’s beauty one to remember through a safe and smooth trails system regardless of season. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, it’s the SORVAs that are working for the motorized recreation community. A huge Thank You to all SORVA groups, truly our unsung heroes. •

Opportunity Turns into Life Passion
Come in for a pasty and some fuel, stay for the friendship and smiles BY KIM KISNER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
N
early two years ago, after many years of working in the manufacturing and investment industries, Troy and Tina Povich quit their jobs in Wisconsin and moved their family back home to the UP, bought Krupps Mini Mart in Twin Lakes, and haven’t looked back. Krupps Mini Mart is located on M-26 about 25 miles south of Houghton, just south of Twin Lakes State Park, and across from the Bill Nichols Trail #3. The store has been a pillar in the tiny little community for many, many years whether it is for morning coffee, inquiries about local events, people calling for trail reports, or to stop and get one of their famous pasties. “We’ve even had someone call the store to find out who he should call because his snowmobile had caught fire just up from the store on the

trail,” said Troy. “Not too long after, a guy came in to get a pasty to eat and during the conversation we guessed he might be the one whose snowmobile was one fire.” Troy and Tina grew up in Houghton, Michigan, went to Houghton High School together, started college at Michigan Tech, and then left the area. After relocating their family several times for their jobs and eventually landing in the Milwaukee area, the Povich’s began to realize the city life was not for them. With a passion for snowmobiling and UTV-ing, hunting and fishing, Troy came home regularly for those activities, and it was during one of those trips that he saw the For Sale sign on Krupps Mini Mart. “Krupps was our meeting spot when my buddies and I came into town to grab a pasty and hit trail 3, the Bill Nichols trail. They always had the best pasties in the UP,” said Troy. Many people say they still do, and travel miles to try one. Troy and Tina have upped the ante on their pasties, making some enhancements to their equipment including newer ovens, a large dicing machine to ensure consistency, and a dough roller to help the employees who have probably rolled out 100’s of 1000’s of pasty crusts over the decades. continued on page 26

PASTY PARADISE AND SO MUCH MORE The proof is in the pudding pasty, as pasty sales continue to increase. Many of the regulars know it’s a good idea to call ahead on the ‘pasty hotline’ as it is locally advertised, to reserve their fresh (or frozen) pasties, and ensure they can get some when they get there. Krupps keeps it simple when it comes to the pasties with just one traditional flavor and a vegetarian option as well. “With advance orders we can accommodate requests such as ‘no onions’ or even a crustless version for those who are gluten free, but for the most part we sell the traditional beef, carrots, onions, rutabaga and potatoes,” says Troy. “With advance notice we can also accommodate various sized pasties too- half-size and appetizer size.” The breakfast burritos are also incredibly popular with travelers as another hand-held option. They also sell several sandwiches including beef brisket, pulled pork, Italian beef, sliced ham, and shredded turkey. A true family business, with the Povich’s daughter and son both working there, Krupps store also houses nearly anything one would want or need if they find themselves on a hunting, hiking, camping or fishing trip, just passing through the area and having forgotten something, or on the hunt for something special from the area. “We used to camp as a family, so we sat down

and made a list of items that would be detrimental if left back home, and we carry those items now,” said Troy. “I’m also an avid fisherman and we offer a wide selection of lures and fishing gear. My wife thinks I went a little overboard here,” says Troy with a laugh. The Povich’s have brought in many more locally made products to the store, now selling everything from honey, maple syrup, Thimbleberry jam and pasty sauce, to soy candles, goat milk soaps, beaded bracelets, wood creations, cribbage boards, wines and more. About owning the store, Troy says “I love it because every day is different. People come in from all over and I find myself in really interesting discussions.” It’s a good thing they enjoy it because Troy and Tina find themselves regularly working 14-16 hour days. “It’s definitely not work for us. It’s not a job. It’s our life and we love it. My only regret is not doing it sooner. This was the best decision we ever made.” •

ho hasn’t heard of Seney, or doesn’t know about it’s existence? Probably no one who makes their residence in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and anyone else from neighboring states who are avid recreationalists and enjoy the great outdoors. Seney is a small unincorporated community located in the northeastern corner of Schoolcraft County with a current population of less than 200 residents. Why then, does this tiny village swell to bursting with visitors not once, but three times per year? Read on to find out why… For eighteen years and counting, the Seney Snowmobile Association along with the Fox River Motel and a host of other spon-
sors have set aside three dates per year specifically to honor both the active military and the veterans with a full day of activities beginning with the Pledge of allegiance, the national anthem, and the raising of the flags for each branch of the armed forces of the United States. The first date is usually the first Saturday in March and is a full day of snowmobile related activities, and Saturday, March 5th was the 18th annual Veteran’s Snowmobile Ride. Beginning promptly at 0900 all attendees were required to register and sign their waivers. All pre-registered veterans received a commemorative T-shirt and free admission to all activities including a trailside lunch
COPPER HARBOR at a camp-cabin known as the Eagles Nest and a fullblown banquet style dinner at the groomer building after the ride. It should be noted also that there is always the empty chair and designated table setting to remember the fallen. This event is all about recognizing our veterans and showing appreciation for their service, but it is also for remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice which allows us the privilege to gather as we’ve done here. The pre-registered non-vets paid a $30 activity fee to get the shirt and the same amenities as the veterans. The money raised goes to help with the expenses incurred in the purchase & preparation of the meals, purchase of the shirts, and the overall operation of the event. One of the event organizers who wished to remain anonymous said “without the support of our many sponsors and all the snowmobilers who turn out each year, we couldn’t do this, and every veteran certainly deserves it!” Any attendees that had not pre-registered were still welcomed to the event, but due to availability T-shirts were in limited supply & sizes and given to those individuals while supplies lasted. With the number of attendees this year and the majority of them participating in the snowmobile ride, the organizers had pre-assigned guide duty to 12 experienced members, each group consisting of twenty-five to thirty riders. Just in case no one was denied the opportunity to ride, three individuals were available on standby should additional guides be required.
