The MSC All Member Survey was sent to all members on March 24. If you missed the email, then view the survey results on the website. The participation was amazing and well above industry averages. John, the management team, and the Board will use the outcomes as the foundation of prioritized capital projects, operations, and programs. No surprise outdoor dining as an amenity was #1 of importance to membership. The Club is working on options for an upgrade to our outdoor dining deck and patio and consulting with the Village. More to come on this potential project and many more to follow! Happy Spring and I look forward to seeing you around the Club. Sue Eschel President

MSC Patch Club Who All MSC members What Mileage tracking in the MSC Aquatics Center Where MSC Aquatics Center Why Community, Fitness Tracking, Prizes (patches, stickers, 500 mile sweatshirt), and bragging rights! Since 2018, MSC members ages 6-90, have tracked over 1,000 miles in the Aquatics Center through the Patch Club. Swimmers have realized many things since the Patch Club began; patches are pretty cool, swimming to Mackinac Island would be about 300 miles of swimming, and that there are a lot of swimmers at MSC that spend a lot of time swimming and taking care of their bodies and minds in the Aquatics Center. If you want to add your name to the board of patch-winning swimmers just reach out to Lloy. Now swimmers may choose to receive patches or stickers to acknowledge their progress. We have stickers of states and National Parks. So when you swim as far as Mammoth Caves like Holly Gilson, we have a Mammoth Caves sticker that you can attach to your favorite water bottle.
April is Paddle Member Appreciation Month in Aquatics! All Paddle members are welcome to use the pool throughout the month.

Fitness and Wellness
Without a solid foundation, you’ll have trouble creating anything of value. Being physically active and incorporating a healthy lifestyle are essential components to our overall wellness. Physical activity helps prevent injury and disease. I believe that having a solid foundation for being physically active starts when we are young. Whether it is associated with sports, weightlifting, or just playing tag with your friends, there is no denying the profound health benefits of physical activity. Last year, I began teaching a kids boot camp with a focus on developing the foundational elements of strength training. The goal is to make them an overall better athlete, not a specific athlete. Today’s athletic programs often lack fundamental movement skills, instead specializing on a given sport. The result is a generation of non-athletic sports specialists. Kids are kids; they should be having some fun training. However, at 13 to 15 years old they should also be learning that there is a serious aspect to the training. Youth strength training is a big topic of interest for many in the health industry. When to start, how much is enough or too much, and what to prescribe are constantly debated. Due to their immature physiological state, kids should be prescribed an appropriate training program according to their technical ability and stage of development. Growth and maturation develop.

www.michiganshores.org 847-251-4100
When I start a youth training program, I first assess their overall movement patterns. A strength training program for kids should include movement skill coaching. Every athlete needs to learn essential movements. Informing the kids on how to make educated decisions when it comes to strength training has provided a better training experience than I could ever imagine. Besides teaching your kids how to safely and effectively move, the next best thing we can do for their physical development is to provide them with opportunities to learn how to safely execute important strength training movements.
A kid’s strength training program should include the basics: squatting, lunging, deadlift variations, loaded carries, and upper-body pushing and pulling sequences. I have seen that resistance training with kids has elicited significant performance improvement in muscular strength, muscular endurance, power production, change of direction, speed and agility, balance, and stability. I have seen resistance training used as a tool to help obtain a physical body, regain confidence, self-esteem, and the ability to cope with life stressors. I am glad to know that these boot camps have served to be an outlet for the kids. While many are aware of how exercise makes you feel on the outside, what should really matter is knowing how your workouts can provide you with internal self-confidence and how it makes you feel like the best version of yourself. I want to personally thank the moms: Julie, Katie, Anne, Cathy, Carolyn, Kim, and Sherri who have contributed to the boot camp development over the last year. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended.
Youth Strength Training Bootcamps Monday 6:00 pm Wednesday 5:00 pm Saturday 10:00 am Age 12-18, class capacity 8, $20 drop-in charge. Call the Fitness Front Desk to register.
