Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.

This living space went through a massive transformation. A soft white color replaced the rich tan on the walls. The Design Team centered the fireplace and replaced a traditional mantel and gas insert with a sleek, modern option. The oak mantel was replaced with a simple, floating piece with the television above. The black accents flanking the clean, tiled floor-to-ceiling fireplace manage to be subtle and dramatic at the same time.

What if transforming your living space didn’t require countless trips to showrooms, agonizing over fabric swatches or wondering if that sofa you love will fit in your family room?

For nearly 30 years, Kathy Sorbe, lead designer and owner of The Elements in Storm Lake, has been making interior design remarkably simple with a service that’s as unique as it is effective: House Calls.

“Humans are visual creatures, so it’s simpler to show you how your space can look than trying to have you imagine it,” says Sorbe. “We can talk about the importance of a rug or furniture placement all day long, but until you see it in your actual room, with your lighting, your wall color, your existing furniture – you just don’t know if it’s right.”

The concept is beautifully straightforward. The Elements’ Design Team loads up their much-recognized trailer with carefully selected pieces – rugs, lamps, artwork, accessories – and brings them to your home. They arrange everything, add the finishing touches and then leave it all there for you to live with on approval.

A service born from understanding, Sorbe developed the house-call concept in Des Moines nearly three decades ago, recognizing a fundamental challenge in interior design: the gap between imagining how something will look and actually seeing it in a space.

“Risk-free,” says Sorbe. “That’s the magic word. Our house-call service is completely risk-free.”

Hanging large art or multiple pieces frequently end with frustration and a few nail holes to fill. Anyone who has struggled to hang art and just can’t get it perfectly straight will appreciate the Design Team’s skill installing wall art.

This updated take on a classic club chair is a hefty piece, and its size may stop homeowners from considering something that looks this large lined up in a furniture store. But in a large room with high ceilings, the scale is perfect.

“I’ve completed literally thousands of House Calls over the years, for budgets small and large,” says Sorbe. “Sometimes it’s a complete room transformation, and sometimes it’s helping someone finish a simple bookcase. Every project matters to us.”

The service has become a signature of The Elements, setting them apart in an industry where homeowners typically purchase items and hope for the best. Instead, Sorbe and her team eliminate the guesswork.

“We try to make it simple, honestly,” Sorbe explains. “We can take accessories such as rugs, lamps or artwork to the client’s home, put it in place, arrange their furniture and leave it there on approval.”

The process begins with a conversation. Homeowners work with The Elements’ Design Team to discuss their needs, challenges and vision for their space. The Design Team ask questions about how the room is used, what’s working and what isn’t and what the homeowner hopes to achieve.

From there, the Design Team creates scaled drawings, illustrating furniture placement and layout. Then, many clients will order custom furniture, or the team selects pieces from the Storm Lake showroom’s extensive inventory. The store features a deep selection of upholstered and leather furniture, art, tables, rugs, consoles, benches and more. New shipments arrive almost daily, so there’s always something fresh.

“Much of what we pull for House Calls is already in the store,” says Sorbe. “But we also can order custom furniture, so homeowners get exactly what they want.” Once the items are selected and any custom furniture arrives, they’re loaded into The Elements’ trailer, and the Design Team heads out to the client’s home. This is where the real magic happens. They don’t just drop things off – they arrange furniture, hang art and place accessories.

“We arrange everything and then we leave,” explains Sorbe. “You get to live with it, see how it functions in your daily life and what your family thinks. If you love it, fantastic. If something isn’t quite right, we try something different. When we’re done, we want you to truly LOVE your new space.”

While The Elements is based in Storm Lake, the Design Team’s reach extends throughout Iowa and the Midwest with recent projects as far as Tennessee and Florida. They visit Sioux City and the Dakota Dunes area almost weekly and are frequently in Okoboji.

“We go everywhere,” says Sorbe. “With our house-call service, we travel all over and don’t say ‘no’ to anybody!”

The service scales beautifully to any project size. We want people to love where they live, and sometimes that means showing them possibilities they hadn’t considered.”
