es to feel like herself. der of Bloom in Color

Motherhood is a collection of seasons Some fast and fleeting, others stretching longer than expected From the early days of packing snacks and diaper bags to navigating school schedules, careers, and eventually cheering on grown children, moms are constantly showing up. They are the planners, the problem-solvers, the steady presence when everything else feels uncertain They truly do it all

And somewhere in the midst of caring for everyone else, it’s easy for a mother’s sense of self to quietly take a back seat

Color analysis offers a simple, powerful way for moms to reconnect with themselves, without adding more to their already full plates

Color analysis helps moms reconnect with themselves in seasons often centered around caring for others Whether they’re raising little ones, guiding teenagers, or enjoying time with grandchildren, many moms spend years putting their own needs and confidence on the back burner By discovering the colors that naturally enhance their features, moms can simplify getting dressed, bring clarity to shopping, and show up as their best selves through all the moments of motherhood

This isn’t about adding pressure or chasing perfection It’s about ease

When a mom knows her colors, getting dressed becomes one less decision to overthink in a day already filled with them Outfits come together more quickly Shopping becomes more intentional The closet starts to feel like a place of possibility instead of frustration. Even small moments, like catching a glimpse in the mirror before heading out the door, can shift from ordinary to uplifting

Because how you feel in what you wear matters

For the mom rushing out the door with snacks in hand, the one juggling work calls and school pickups, or the one stepping into a new chapter with more time for herself, confidence doesn’t have to be complicated It can be as simple as wearing a color that brings life back into your face, that reflects who you are now, not just who you were before motherhood.

Every season of motherhood deserves to be met with presence and confidence

And that’s where the invitation begins this Mother’s Day season: step into something just for you Book your color session, explore what truly lights you up, and bloom in every season of motherhood!

BUILDING A BALANCED LIFE

Danielle Hoyer has always been someone who appreciates the details that go into making a house a home.

Growing up in the small town of Howard, South Dakota, she was drawn to the character and charm of older homes, always noticing the details that set them apart; the trim work, the rooflines, and the way each one seemed to tell its own story. At home, Danielle reluctantly helped her parents with renovation projects, an early hands-on education she didn’t fully appreciate at the time.

“I grew up in a house built in the early 1900s that had actually been moved from a different town. It was a big, old, beautiful home, and my mom worked so hard restoring it, stripping floors, pulling up carpet, bringing new life into the home,” Danielle recalls.

Her interest in homes and design drew her first to a career in real estate, and ultimately led her to home building.

Now, as the co-owner of BH Construction alongside her husband, Brandon, she uses her talent for bringing all the details together to help clients build their dream homes.

Blending creativity with a practical, efficient approach has helped Danielle find success, not just in business but in life as well.

Danielle and Brandon were friends in high school, and she really viewed their relationship as “just friends” at the time. “It wasn’t until we got a bit older that we realized that we wanted it to be more,” Danielle shares.

Brandon was farming with his family near Howard at the time, but he eventually moved to Sioux Falls to be near Danielle. After nine months of dating, they got engaged, bought their first home, and he started BH Construction, initially focusing on framing, siding and roofing.

In 2016, the Hoyers decided to build their next home themselves; an acreage Danielle now refers to it as their “funny farm.”

“It was a soybean field, so we really had to use our imagination and creativity to build it from the ground up. We planted trees, drafted the floor plan, and I designed it. It was our first start-to-finish project,” Danielle shares.

When the home was completed, it became clear to Brandon and Danielle that they had something special together, not just as husband and wife, but as a business. A few months later, they broke ground on their first spec home.

Since then, growth has been steady.

Today, BH Construction is approaching its 100th build, with projects ranging from thoughtfully-designed spec homes to high-end custom builds, regularly landing in the $1 million to $1.5 million price range.

“I always say we’re design-focused,” Danielle explains. “Anyone can throw the term ‘custom home builder’ around, but our focus on design sets us apart. I love helping people see the vision, walking through a floor plan, and thinking about how a space will actually function.”

It’s a skill their clients have come to rely on, especially in the early stages of building, when everything still feels abstract.

“A lot of clients struggle with that part,” Danielle explains. “I can look at a plan, and I’m in it. I’m in the kitchen cooking a family meal or I’m sitting in the living room snuggled in for a movie.”

After almost a decade, Danielle says her favorite part of the process is when things start to come together for the client.

“Many times, they’re overwhelmed by it all at first, but I love it when it clicks for them, and you see that twinkle in their eye.”

Her style leans toward what she describes as “modern organic” with an emphasis on longevity and functionality over trends.

“I try not to buy too much into today’s trends, but instead lean into the timeless,” she adds. “You don’t want to walk into a house five years later and immediately know when it was built.”

“It’s about blending styles but keeping things functional. My mind is always designing from the mom brain, too,” Danielle notes.

That intentionality extends beyond work and into the life she’s built at home with Brandon and their three sons, Braylon (14), Beckett (12), and Merrick (6). The Hoyers have worked hard to create a lifestyle that balances hard work, fun and family time.

Their acreage has turned into something of a smallscale animal sanctuary, complete with goats, pigs, donkeys, chickens, cats, dogs, and even a collection of tropical birds.

“I’m the biggest animal person,” Danielle shares. “When I was growing up, everyone knew my mom was an animal lover, so they would just bring her bunnies, squirrels, birds, and cats. Really, any stray animal we could find, we fed.”

“It’s been a bit of a transition for Brandon, who grew up on a farm thinking animals are supposed to make you money,” she adds, laughing.

When they aren’t busy with work, school and sports, they’re a soccer, wrestling and football family, the Hoyers spend lots of time at home, tackling the farm chores and enjoying outdoor activities.

“We love it,” Danielle says. “There’s always something going on.”

They also spend time golfing, camping and skiing at Brandon’s family cabin in Spearfish.

Balancing an active family life and a growing business has taken intention and adaptability, especially as a husband-and-wife team.

“When you’re running a business together, no day is perfect, but at the end of the day, it’s all about reminding each other that we’re on the same team and we have the same goal for our business,” Danielle acknowledges.

In the business, Danielle handles much of the design work, client meetings, and bookkeeping for BH Construction, while Brandon oversees the broader

vision and on-site execution. Two long-time project managers help keep things moving.

It works because their strengths complement each other. Danielle’s detail-oriented, design-driven mindset balances Brandon’s big-picture approach.

Working in a male-dominated industry is something I grew into, not something I planed,” Danielle adds. “I am often surrounded by men, making the calls and settling the direction, something that didn’t’ come naturally at first. But once I leaned into it, everything shifted. I learned to trust my voice and stand firm in my decisions. I’m usually the only woman on-site and the one making sure the details are done right.”

“If it were up to him, he’d probably copy and paste the same plan,” she states. “And I’m like, ‘Nope, we’re going to switch it up.’”

That dynamic has helped them grow, but it’s also shown them the need for boundaries, especially after seasons of burnout.

Island is one of their favorite places in the world to escape the winter cold and spend time with friends

Danielle recalls one year during the pandemic when they built 17 homes, which she says was nearly unsustainable.

“We were super appreciative that we had the opportunities we did, but we were stretched too thin, especially when you consider having a baby and homeschooling two kids during COVID-19,” she affirms.

That season ultimately reshaped how they approach work and home life.

“Putting family first is the best way to structure it,” Danielle adds. “And honestly, our clients respect that. I’m a mom first and a business owner second. Everything else falls in line beyond that.”

Looking to the future, Danielle sees room to expand, possibly by bringing on additional design support or offering standalone design services.

But for now, the focus remains on what’s already working: designing beautiful homes and building a life that’s anything but boring.

She loves to travel...family trips, girls trips, trips with her mom and sisters, couples trips, you name it, she’s there. Danielle’s not drawn to crowds, and she would rather opt for recharging in nature away from the noise.

Retirement used to come with a clear expectation. Slow down. Take it easy. Settle into a quieter routine. Maybe a rocking chair and a routine that rarely changed but today, that picture is shifting.

For many older adults, retirement is no longer about stepping back. It is about stepping into something new, it is a reinvention to a new phase of life.

After decades of careers, raising families, and meeting responsibilities, retirement offers something many people have not had in a long time: the freedom to choose how each day looks, and with that freedom comes opportunity.

Opportunity to rediscover interests that were once put on hold.

Opportunity to build new relationships.

Opportunity to focus on health, wellness, and joy in a more intentional way.

For some, that means picking up hobbies they never

had time for; painting, gardening, traveling, or learning something new just for the sake of it. For others, it’s spending more time with family, staying active, or simply having the flexibility to enjoy each day without a packed schedule.

Retirement today isn’t about slowing down. It’s about choosing how you want to spend your time.

One of the biggest factors that shapes that experience is where you live.

There is still a common belief that senior living is something people turn to only when they need care. But more people are starting to think about it differently. Instead of waiting for a moment of need, they are choosing to make a move earlier while they are still active and independent.

Because the right environment can make all the difference.

When the responsibilities of homeownership are lifted, things start to open up. No more worrying about maintenance, cooking every meal, or managing everything

on your own. Instead, that time and energy can be redirected toward things that bring fulfillment. That might look like joining a morning exercise class, attending a live music event, or simply enjoying coffee with neighbors who quickly become friends. It might be trying something new for the first time in years or revisiting something that once brought joy.

There is also something powerful about being surrounded by others who are in a similar stage of life. There is an understanding, a shared experience, and a sense of belonging that can be difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Perhaps just as important, there is peace of mind. Knowing that support is available if it’s ever needed allows residents to focus less on “what if” and more on what they want their days to look like right now. Whether that support is minimal today or grows over time, having it in place brings confidence for residents and their families.

This is where the idea of reinvention really takes shape.

It’s not about losing independence. In many ways, it’s about maintaining it longer and even gaining some of it back. By removing the barriers that quietly limit day-to-day life, along with the stress of daily responsibilities, residents can stay active, engaged, and in control of how they spend their time. It’s also about redefining what this stage of life can look like and putting the focus back on choice.

Choosing how to spend your time.

Choosing who you surround yourself with.

Choosing a lifestyle that supports not just your needs, but your goals.

At Peaceful Pines Senior Living, we see this every day. Residents often arrive unsure of what this next chapter will look like, but over time, they begin to rediscover parts of themselves. They find routines that feel fulfilling, build friendships that feel like family, and settle into a rhythm of living life together. What once felt like a big transition starts to feel like a fresh start. Not an ending, but a continuation.

Retirement isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of a new one. And with the right mindset, support, and environment, it can become one of the most meaningful and fulfilling chapters yet.

hen the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum opened on Arbor Day in 2006, a national day of celebration designated to celebrate trees and their value, it fulfilled the dream of a woman who believed Sioux Falls deserved a vibrant, natural sanctuary like those in major cities.

What began as a vision for gardens, wetlands, and native plants has become a beloved community space where people of all ages come to learn, explore, and reconnect with the natural world. As its mission states, the Arboretum exists “to nurture connections between plants and all people, past and present, in an inspiring natural setting that invites discovery.”

This year’s 20th anniversary celebration returned to its roots, literally, by planting 20 trees for the 20th, with school-age children planting them alongside City Parks and Recreation staff. Minnehaha Master Gardeners partnered with the Arboretum to expand its developing food forest, planting fruit-bearing trees and shrubs so kids could learn more about where food comes from.

“We promoted as much as possible to recognize Arbor Day and how it ties into the dedication of the Arboretum for the 20th anniversary,” states Executive Director Mike Cooper. “We hosted an Arboretum Day celebration in the Jasper Education Center, welcoming board members, elected officials, and long-time supporters, and the City Parks and Recreation Department capped off the evening by inviting the public to explore the trails and learn more about the Arboretum’s work.”

Only minutes from downtown, the Arboretum has emerged as a favorite spot for photography, dog-walking, and quiet reflection. Despite its expansive grounds and year-round events, the Arboretum operates with what Mike humorously describes as “a very large team of three part-time people.” Their events coordinator manages more than 70 rental events each year, including graduations, weddings, and celebrations that help fund operations.

“The City of Sioux Falls partnership agreement provides that we operate the Arboretum on behalf of the city,”

Mike explains. “We don’t receive any operating funds, but the city provides grounds maintenance, which is a big deal.”

This summer, the Arboretum hosts a beloved tradition: Camp Wild. Nearly 100 children have already registered for this year’s six themed camps, held four mornings a week and twice per month in June, July, and August. Field trips from schools and daycares continue to grow, and the Tree Education Garden, supported by the Master Gardeners, offers hands-on horticulture education for visitors of all ages.

History is also deeply rooted in the Arboretum’s identity. The East Sioux Falls History Plaza features quarry stone and interpretive displays that tell the story of the former town site and the workers who shaped the region. A designated trail with historic signage allows visitors to imagine the past as they walk through today’s serene woodlands.

As the Arboretum steps into its next 20 years, community involvement remains vital. Volunteers are always welcome, whether helping with activities, becoming a member, or joining the grounds crew.

“And this year brought a fun new twist: two Augustana University students partnered with a local brewery to create the ‘Maple Cream Ale’ brewed specifically for the Arboretum’s anniversary celebration,” Mike shares.

Twenty years after its dedication, the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum continues to honor its founder’s vision, connecting people to nature and cultivating a place where discovery is always in season.

EMBRACING THE FUTURE:

SIOUX FALLS VA’S JOURNEY TO THE FEDERAL ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD

In the 1980s, the VA implemented a self-developed electronic medical record known as VistA. It was a nationwide integrated electronic medical record system, further developed in the 1990s with a graphical user interface known as CPRS. This system has been continually improved, but now, more than 30 years later, the VA has outgrown its capabilities. Consequently, the VA is upgrading to a new system called the Federal Electronic Health Record (FEHR), which will communicate with Department of Defense medical records and offer new capabilities.

The Sioux Falls VA is in the midst of preparing for FEHR, with a go-live date of May 15, 2027. This significant change to VA healthcare, our biggest in over three decades, brings considerable challenges. It requires an examination of how we conduct business and how we must change to meet the requirements of foundational systematic improvement. Successfully changing

the very fabric of our organization’s operations is a complex problem that touches every part of the healthcare we provide, and the solutions will impact all aspects of our services.

Studies on organizational behavior and leadership tell us that people make the difference. Our staff, who are our greatest asset, allow us to take care of our Veterans. It is the staff who are doing the actual work to enable this major change, and they are the key to our success. Our staff are fully committed and motivated

to accomplish this challenge with minimal disruption in patient care and to position Veteran health care for success for another three decades. Please join us in this change with patience as we work through it and celebrate with us when we are done.

The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System has locations in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Dakota Dunes, Watertown, and Wagner, South Dakota, as well as Spirit Lake, Iowa. It is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and is a leader within the VA system and the regional area, with high scores in clinical performance and customer trust, as well as a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

PROTECT WHAT MATTERS MOST - ENJOY YOUR BACKYARD AGAIN

“If you’ve ever had to cut a night short because the bugs got too bad, you’re not alone. For many families, it’s one of the biggest frustrations of summer,” states Adrianne Meyer, local owner of Mosquito Shield of Sioux Falls, a company that has been serving the Sioux Falls area for the past five years.

“Whether it’s kids playing in the yard, family BBQs, or quiet evenings on the patio, no one wants those moments interrupted by mosquitoes. Not only that, but as a part-time nurse, I’m especially aware of the diseases mosquitoes and ticks can carry, and our service adds an extra layer of protection and peace of mind for my family.”

As a local, family-run business and parents to three children of their own, Adrianne says they wanted to bring peace of mind to other parents and families.

“We know the summer months are few and far between,” she explains. “So, we want to be able to enjoy it as much as we can. Kids want to be outside playing, and the adults themselves like to be out there too, gardening, sitting on the patio, or reading a book.

Mosquito Shield doesn’t just control mosquitoes. They’ve got you covered when it comes to ticks and exterior perimeter control for ants and spiders, too!

“Our professionally trained technicians treat the exterior of the home and don’t typically go inside. They carry a backpack and spray ‘hot spots’ where mosquitoes like to harbor, as well as frequent hangout areas, so where you’re spending most of your time is protected. With each application, our treatments get stronger and more effective.”

The goal: keep the mosquitoes and pests away.

“We usually go out on a 10-17 day cycle, weather pending. On average, it’s every 2 weeks, but we monitor the weather since that can affect mosquito activity,” Adrianne explains. “We pride ourselves on our proactive, weather-based approach, which provides better control than our competitors, who frequently follow a once-a-month treatment schedule.”

“A lot of times, you’re going to see the pests, and that’s usually what triggers a phone call to us. But they can be there without you knowing, like in your gutters, wood piles, or water-holding containers. They only need an ounce of water to lay eggs,” Adrianne shares.

Mosquito Shield of Sioux Falls’ step-by-step process easily takes you from start to finish.

“We handle everything, from scheduling to service, so you don’t have to think about it. We communicate every step of the way, so you always know when we’re coming and what to expect. And better yet, once our product dries (usually about 15 minutes), kids and pets can return to the yard without risk.”

Aside from seasonal treatments, which usually run from May through September, we also offer

special one-time event sprays for any outdoor gatherings like graduations, birthdays, weddings, or parties.

“It’s a great option for people who want to ensure they’re protected for events such as Memorial Day, family reunions, or the Fourth of July. No one likes to deal with uninvited pests, and they can really ruin your party. That’s why we are here.”

As a family-run business, Adrianne says they treat every single customer the way they would want to be treated.

Summer Skin & Makeup Trends

Just like fashion, we see skin trends and makeup techniques change with the seasons. While these trends seem to be more subtle, they’re also more attainable with minor changes, adding in a product or merely changing the way you apply a product. Skin and makeup changes can be harder to adapt to for some as we get in our routine of applying certain products we use and simply ease of what we currently do. My goal after you read this is to give you easy and applicable tips to try out these skin and makeup trends for yourself, giving yourself the ultimate self-care glow!

Sun-Flushed Blush: Skip the sunburn and opt for the sunburn look with your blush, naturally. This technique gives the appearance of a day spent in the sun with blush applied more heavily on the cheeks and bridge of the nose. I prefer to use a smaller, angled blush brush for more concentrated application verses all-over color. Tip: Find your undertone color and mimic that in your choice of blush color; cool or warm.

Butter Skin: Last year was all about glassy skin and this year we’re toning it down a notch to butter skin. Butter skin is a soft, hydrated and slightly dewy skin glow. To achieve this, you’re going to focus on your serums and hydrating mists but now incorporating back in your loose or pressed powders. However, keeping in mind to use

less powder, more serums and mists. Blot the areas needed with your powders, not all over powder.

Hydrating Mist: This product often gets overlooked as a product that’s not necessary… but not all mists are created equal. My favorite one is a 4-in-1 Facial Mist from Crunchi that is power-packed with benefits and skin nourishing ingredients. Create that “butter skin” glow by using this mist that: hydrates your skin, sets your makeup, refreshes your face and shields against environmental stressors.

Softer Brows: While we aren’t going to back to the millennial pencil-line thin brows, think overall less maintenance on them. Less structured brows, less fluff, softer, diffused and shaping your natural brow line. I love having my brows microbladed so I know exactly where my natural brow line should be, and now I shape and fill in with a brow gel where my natural hair might be lacking.

Be kind to your skin and watch it glow!

Picture a retirement filled with the lifelong hobbies you love – all in a place where you have the space to flourish.

That’s everyday life for Pauline Daninger, senior living resident at Good Samaritan –Heritage Grove in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, whose days are filled with a variety of creative endeavors.

She’s always making something with her hands and her heart.

I do oil painting, crocheting, baking and whatever comes up that I enjoy,” says Pauline. “It really pleases me to make things and give them to people.”

Everybody’s very friendly,” says Pauline. “We did a craft with these little brushes where we added a nose and a hat. It was really fun.”

Senior living offers the best of both worlds: meaningful community and quick access to everyday needs. Pauline loves being close to her doctor and appreciates how simple life feels compared to maintaining a house on her own.

Craftsy her entire life, Pauline moved to Good Samaritan and quickly embraced the freedom of senior living. Without the responsibilities of home maintenance and upkeep, she’s gained something invaluable – more time to do what she loves.

“Everything is easier here,” Pauline says.

“My apartment is always a mess because I have my activities out, but that’s OK,” Pauline says.

Whether she’s arranging flowers, embroidering or baking fresh bread, no two days look the same. Recently, she crocheted an entire box of handmade dish rags for her niece – just because she could.

Pauline also enjoys the sense of connection that comes with community living. Welcoming neighbors and scheduled activities make it easy to stay social, uplifted

life fully with the time, space and support to continue pursuing what makes you you. Live like Pauline and maintain your craftsy creativity.

Why stop doing what you love, when you finally have time to do it all?

When Matthew Whitaker takes the stage, it’s not just about the music. It’s about the feeling he portrays with it. The 2026 Grammy Awardwinning artist, known for blending piano renditions of jazz, soul, gospel, and a wide range of arrangements, will perform at the Levitt at the Falls on July 11. However, long before this performance was on the calendar, Whitaker had already made his lasting impact on Sioux Falls, particularly through his connection with the Augustana University School of Music.

For Matthew, music has always been something bigger than the performance alone. “One of the earliest moments that made me feel like ‘this is really happening’ was performing at the Apollo Theater when I was nine in the Child Star of Tomorrow Competition,” Matthew recalls. “It was my first time on a big stage, and when they called my name as the winner, I couldn’t believe it. That moment gave me confidence and helped me realize this could become something bigger.”

That sense of momentum has only grown. From major stages to collaborations with artists he once admired from afar, Matthew says those “this is really happening” moments continue to evolve, including winning a 2026 Grammy for Best Arrangement.

The path of creation goes a layer deeper than the outside perspective. He focuses on the feeling of the music, rather than on one specific expertise.

“I focus on emotion first,” Matthew shares. “If the music feels honest and meaningful, the style or genre usually takes care of itself.” His emotional mindset translates directly the same into his live performances as well. Whether he is playing an upbeat high-energy set or something more reflective, Matthew wants his audiences to feel like they are part of the experience, not just watching from the outside.

That same sense of connection is exactly what stood out to Matthew Erickson, interim dean of the Augustana

School of Music, when Whitaker first came to campus.

“He’s a generational talent,” Erickson acknowledges. “The joy and exuberance he brings to music is something I haven’t seen before.”

Whitaker’s relationship with Augustana began in 2023 when he was brought in through Yamaha Musical Instruments as a guest performer for the university’s jazz festival. The event draws dozens of high school ensembles, but Whitaker’s presence left a lasting impression. “He hit it off right away with our students and faculty,” Erickson notes. “It was one of those moments where we just knew this was something we wanted to build on.”

That connection quickly grew into a residency, giving students a rare opportunity to learn from an artist actively shaping today’s music landscape. “They can collaborate, write, record, and get realtime feedback. It’s like a live review process with someone at the highest level,” Erickson explains.

Experiences like that are part of what sets Augustana apart, even as the school continues working to grow enrollment and evolve its longterm goals. “There aren’t a lot of programs that can bring in musicians of this caliber and give students this kind of access,” Erickson adds. That influence will be on full display in the coming months. On April 24, Whitaker will perform George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” alongside the Augustana Band at the Washington Pavilion. Then, on Saturday, July 11, he will headline a free outdoor concert at Levitt at the Falls as part of its 50 free summer performances. The Levitt concert will open with the Jacob Moeller Trio, a group of recent Augustana School of Music graduates who collaborated with Whitaker during his residency.

For Whitaker, it all comes back to the same foundation: growth, connection, and staying true to the music. “Don’t be afraid to find your own voice,” Matthew advises. “Stay connected to what you love, keep learning, and keep pushing forward.” If his journey is any indication, that combination can take you further than you ever imagined.

Always, Mom

There is a grace to motherhood that time cannot diminish.

It lingers in the way she welcomes you, in the ease of her laughter, in the quiet, steady presence that has always felt like home.

She has filled the years with care, with beauty, with intention— turning ordinary days into something worth remembering.

And somewhere along the way, you begin to see it more clearly— how deeply her love has shaped your world, how naturally it lives on in you.

Time moves, as it always does, but some things only grow richer— the stories, the connection, the comfort of simply being together.

Because through every season, through every stage, she is— and will always be—

Mom.

There comes a time when the love she gave is returned in quiet, meaningful ways.

A place where days feel lighter, where laughter comes easily, and where comfort simply surrounds her.

Where she can enjoy each day with just the right balance of independence, care, and connection.

Rosie’s Café closed last spring after 41 years in Sioux Falls but reopened just before Christmas under new ownership. The reborn eatery, famous for its Midwest classic homestyle cooking, continues to serve delicious old favorites like biscuits and gravy and French toast, plus rotating flavors like key lime cheesecake with coconut cream sauce--sure to please the palates of new patrons. You’ll find a full menu with breakfast and weekly specials on Rosie’s Facebook page.

The restaurant, located at the corner of Madison Street and Elmwood Avenue, seats 48 and offers full-service dining to the breakfast and lunch crowd. Open Tuesday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rosie’s focuses on breakfast only on Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The café closes on Mondays for its staff of eight to rest and recreate.

Culinary partners Tom “Tiger” Hinrichs and Barry Selland bring years of food experience to Rosie’s. Barry started cooking at Champs in the mid-1990s, helped start Bracco’s in Okoboji, and assisted in opening Shipwreck Bar and Grill in Madison. Tom helped open Johnny Carinos and a couple of Granite City franchises before serving as the general manager at Noodles and Co., and most recently, Tom was the executive chef at the Treasury, sous chef at Chef Lances, and head chef at M.B. Hasketts.

Tom and Barry became friends early in their culinary careers, so when Barry learned of Rosie’s shuttered café, and Tom crunched the numbers, the two decided on a joint venture. “It’s the local type of cooking we’re familiar with,” says Tom, adding, “I wanted to take some of the things I’ve learned during the last 10 years I’ve spent downtown and bring it here.” He admits enjoying

another perk of Rosie’s 2 p.m. closing, “Having evenings free to spend with my kids.”

For four decades, 21 years downtown and 20 years at its current location, Rosie’s has been a staple for locals. “A lot of people tell us, ‘this is our favorite place,’” says Barry. “Many of our customers are people who have been coming for years because their dad or mom or grandparents brought them here. Rosie’s clientele enjoys the scratch cooking, the comfort food they grew up with.

Now, a new generation of patrons is finding Rosie’s. “We hope a lot of the regulars continue to come for breakfast or lunch, but we’re also hoping to bring in younger demographics,” says Tom. “We have a lot of friends in

the industry that come and support us, and their word of mouth is helping us gain momentum.”

Tom and Barry have big plans, but I’d have to give away some secrets to tell you about them. “We just want to get our sea legs first, then hopefully bring in more people to take on more of the load while we put these plans into action,” Tom adds.

Meanwhile, look for a new sign above the door soon, as well as a gradually expanding menu.

“The road bringing Rosie’s Café back to life has been fun, admits Barry. “We’ve been getting really good reviews so far, and we’re excited about where we’re going to go.”

Check out the food and the atmosphere at Rosie’s Café, four blocks east of Kiwanis Avenue and four blocks west of the Sioux Falls Canaries stadium, at 2200 W Madison Street. Call 605-334-7928 for takeout.

FINANCIAL PLANNING FOR WOMEN SMART, SAVVY, & SECURE

“I just hate thinking about money and that sort of thing. I hate figuring that all out. I don’t understand how any of it works.”

One of my closest friends just told me this. She is smart, hardworking, and highly capable. When it comes to her finances, though, she would rather not think about it. She wants to be financially prudent and make wise decisions, but the confusion and perceived complexity discourage her from educating herself.

I have two other friends who completely hand their budget off to their husbands, not as part of a shared strategy, but because they feel uncomfortable engaging with it themselves. Whether it be nerves about their bank account, 401(k), or budget, instead of partnering with their significant other or allowing them to take the lead, they have stepped away from being involved in their financial plan.

Many women share similar stories. They are capable of handling their finances, but fear of messing something up, not having enough money, or lack of knowledge discourages them. Having a trusted person help direct your budget, align your goals, and manage your investments can be a helpful approach. It is not an excuse for inaction, staying stagnant, or having no understanding of what your money is doing.

Male or female, financial planning starts at the same place: setting your goals. These goals extend beyond retiring with $1 million, affording a 20% down payment on a home, or paying for education with no debt. Your personal life goals inform your financial goals.

Maybe you want to retire with a certain amount of money, likely because you want to be able to afford spoiling your grandchildren and traveling in retirement. Is that move you are saving for motivated by safety, family, or is it just time for a change?

From setting goals, the focus shifts to execution. The next step is to create a plan. Is your budget staying within your means? Do you have debt to pay off? Money set aside in case of an emergency? Funds invested to grow your portfolio? Are you maximizing your retirement accounts? Do you know the difference between your Roth and pre-tax money? Are you taking advantage of your 401(k)?

With a plan in place, the key to long-term success is sticking with it. Things will change, unexpected expenses will occur, and there will likely be setbacks. Create a plan that you can maintain throughout your life’s changes. Working with a financial advisor may provide value through behavioral coaching, planning, and discipline. Queen Mary Bucknell

Empire Magazine is honored to crown Mary Bucknell as our 2026 Queen for a Day, celebrating a woman whose life reflects resilience, service, and showing up where she’s needed. Her daughter, Samantha Westhoff, captured it beautifully in her nomination: “My mom deserves to be Queen for a Day because she embodies kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. She gives so much of herself to others and never expects anything in return.”

When asked where her instinct to care for others comes from, Mary says, “I don’t like to see people struggle, and if there’s anything I can do to help, I will.” She credits her mother, Clarice, for showing her the way. “Mom was a big volunteer for Sanford in her retirement, helping with everything from folding envelopes to mass mailings. That really gave me my sense of volunteering for people,” Mary explains. “Where you know you can do good, go do it. Showing up is a big thing.”

That philosophy has carried her through some of life’s hardest seasons. Her father passed away when she was 14, and that same year, her brother died in a construction accident, at just 22, leaving behind a young widow and a newborn baby. “That was a huge deal,” she says quietly.

Mary also cared for her mother through a difficult illness for several years. And her best friend, Lora, whom she’d known since they were four-years-old, recently passed after four months in hospice. “I still miss my mom, and

Mary’s family
Mary and her husband, John, attending their daughter’s wedding

Lora hasn’t been gone quite long enough yet to talk about without crying,” Mary shares.

Mary and her husband were newly retired when they experienced a devastating house fire three years ago. “I felt like I was in a fog for two months,” she recalls. “I never would’ve thought it would happen to us.”

Thankfully, people showed up for them. Her children organized a fundraiser at The Gateway, which was packed beyond capacity with friends and neighbors, and a nephew launched an online fundraiser. “It was unbelievable, the love,” Mary adds. “People were so generous, and every little bit helps when you lose everything.”

They rebuilt on the same property, and Mary says the home is starting to feel more like home now. “I feel a huge amount of thanks and comfort from everyone who helped out,” she says. “This includes a special thank you to my husband, John, who oversaw the project from start to finish. We want everyone to come see the results when we have an open house after the grass grows in.”

Mary’s career path reflects the same dedication she brings to her relationships. She spent 26 years working for an insurance company, where she thought she’d stay her whole life. But when the firm decided to relocate to North Dakota, Mary made a bold career move to stay local and join the staff at All City Pet Care.

“Working in a pet clinic was my dream job,” she says. She loved working the front desk and offering people therapy and pet therapy. Mary also worked at an emergency clinic on Saturdays, helping pets and their owners in crisis. “You had to be there for the people. At the front desk is where you hope to calm everyone down and let the doctor do what they need to do. I feel like I accomplished my dream and was there for 19 years.”

When asked what she’s most proud of, Mary doesn’t hesitate. “My family. Seriously.” Her husband started his own business. Her son did, too. And her daughter, Samantha recently launched hers. Mary served as the central support system when she retired while her family continues to grow and flourish.

Even now, with health challenges that make walking more difficult, Mary keeps moving. “I know that if I sit around and do nothing, it’ll only get worse,” she affirms. “Going forward is what everybody needs.” Her grandchildren help with that. “They keep me hopping, and I have to get a little vigorous so I can keep up with them.” She loves her grandbabies and says it’s everything that everyone said it would be. “They’re in wonderment of everything,” she says. “The grandbabies keep me going, and it makes me feel so much more alive.”

Mary’s final encouragement for a life well-lived is simple and heartfelt: “Always follow your dreams.”

RECLAIMING CONFIDENCE: THE MODERN MOMMY MAKEOVER

Motherhood is transformative in every sense of the word. It reshapes priorities, deepens purpose, and creates a love unlike any other. But alongside those beautiful changes, many women also experience physical changes that can feel less welcome; stubborn areas of fat, stretched skin, loss of breast volume, and weakened abdominal muscles that don’t respond to even the most dedicated diet and exercise routines.

For women ready to restore their pre-pregnancy bodies, or simply feel more like themselves again, the Mommy Makeover has become one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures in the country. At Plastic Surgery Associates of South Dakota, this personalized approach to body rejuvenation is helping women reclaim their confidence on their own terms.

WHAT IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

A Mommy Makeover isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure; it’s a customized combination of surgical treatments designed to address the areas most affected by pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Typically, this includes a blend of procedures such as:

Breast augmentation, lift, or reduction

Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)

Liposuction to contour the waist, hips, or thighs

Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual, ensuring natural-looking, balanced results that align with a patient’s goals and lifestyle.

WHY WOMEN ARE CHOOSING IT

Today’s Mommy Makeover is less about “bouncing back” and more about moving forward. Women are choosing these procedures not out of pressure, but from a place of empowerment. After years of putting others first, many are ready to invest in themselves again.

Patients often report improvements that go beyond physical appearance; enhanced self-esteem, renewed confidence in clothing, and even greater comfort in their own skin.

TIMING MATTERS

While the desire to feel like yourself again can be immediate, timing is key. Surgeons typically recommend waiting until:

You are finished having children

Your weight has stabilized

You’ve fully recovered from childbirth or breastfeeding This ensures the best, longest-lasting results.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Recovery from a Mommy Makeover varies depending on the procedures performed, but most patients can expect a few weeks of downtime with gradual return to normal activities. At Plastic Surgery Associates of South Dakota, patient safety and comfort are top priorities, with comprehensive pre- and post-operative care guiding each step of the journey.

A PERSONALIZED APPROACH

What sets the Mommy Makeover apart is its customization. No two bodies, or motherhood journeys, are the same. During consultation, patients work closely with experienced providers to design a treatment plan that reflects their unique anatomy, concerns, and aesthetic goals.

MORE THAN A MAKEOVER

Ultimately, a Mommy Makeover isn’t about erasing the signs of motherhood—it’s about honoring them while restoring a sense of self. It’s a way for women to feel strong, confident, and aligned with the image they see in the mirror

Because when you feel like yourself again, it shows in every part of your life.
