The sex industry has always been a part of the city and is said to be the oldest profession in the world. However, the urban areas that cater for prostitution are often considered illegitimate parts of the city. The negative effect of stigmatization not only extends to the lives of the people associated with the sex industry but also affects the place (known as Red Light Districts) they occupy.
Taking G.B.Road, the red light district of New Delhi, India as an example, this project focuses on how landscape architecture can help device a design strategy which can aid to uplift the social living conditions of the people residing in the Red Light Districts. The project reinstates on how a positive system might exist in such areas through various programs run by non-government organizations and how it could be an opportunity for a designer to tap into to empower the community with place as opposed to gentrification.
