50 Years Strong Still Growing
&
By Allison Lawson
Expanding our presence from St. Petersburg to Sanibel/Captiva Islands
Since our beginnings on St. Armands Circle in 1976, Michael Saunders & Company has connected people to the communities, lifestyles, and homes that define Florida’s Gulf Coast. Over the years, our growth into surrounding markets has been a natural progression, shaped by the desires of our customers and our deep roots in the region.
So, as we approach our 50th anniversary, we’re doing what we’ve always done—going where our customers need us. That’s why we’re bringing our trusted expertise and commitment to excellence north to the vibrant city of St. Petersburg and south to the pristine shores of Sanibel, Captiva, and
Fort Myers. This expansion allows us to offer the same deep market knowledge and personal attention across more of this beautiful coastal region.
A Natural Evolution of Who We Are
St. Petersburg has long been part of our story. Through our Developer Services division, we’ve collaborated for years on exceptional urban residential projects that have helped shape the city’s skyline, from Vinoy Place in the early 2000s to the newly rising 400 Central, St. Pete’s tallest building. The city’s rich cultural scene, celebrated dining, and energetic urban lifestyle appeal to many of today’s buyers. By extending our services here, we’re embracing the modern Gulf Coast experience, bringing our signature expertise to a community we know and love.
While St. Petersburg embodies the urban energy of the Gulf Coast, our move south celebrates a different facet of coastal living. Sanibel and Captiva feel less like a new market to us and more like a natural continuation of the lifestyle we know so well and cherish. These barrier islands, which grace the southern reaches of Florida’s Gulf Coast, are places where time slows, nature flourishes, and everyday life unfolds amid soft sea breezes and miles of unspoiled shoreline. By bringing
our full suite of real estate services to these beloved island communities, we’re able to connect more buyers and sellers to the joys of island living.
Nobody knows Gulf Coast lifestyles like we do.
Growing with Purpose
Our growth isn’t about planting flags on a map—it’s about building relationships, honoring local roots and community, and delivering the exceptional service that has defined Michael Saunders & Company for nearly five decades.
As we expand to serve more of Florida’s West Coast, we’re inspired by the stories yet to unfold—stories written in the places where our customers live, vacation, invest, and create lasting memories. We’re proud to be there to support them every step of the way. Join us as we continue to grow, connect, and celebrate the Gulf Coast’s endless possibilities. Your next adventure awaits, and we’re honored to be by your side.
Michael Saunders & Company now has 19 offices across Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties, offering unmatched expertise and exceptional service along Florida’s Gulf Coast—from St. Petersburg to Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

36Hours IN SARASOTA | FLORIDA
By Ruth Lando
Sarasota has a reputation for unsurpassed natural beauty, but there’s a surprise side to this small jewel on Southwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. Conveniently served by SRQ Airport just minutes from downtown, it’s an easy getaway with a variety of visual and performing arts, culture, and immersive environmental experiences that exceed expectations. A three-day weekend barely scratches the surface and calls for some hard choices. Add in global dining, luxury shopping, and entertainment, and any visitor is guaranteed a memorable 36 hours.
FRIDAY
10:00 am The Ringling, home to the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Circus Museum, Historic Asolo Theater, and Bayfront Gardens, ranks as a must-see. Circus magnate John Ringling’s European acquisitions satisfy religious and Baroque art lovers, but can’t eclipse the contemporary paintings and glass, Asian treasures, or the lavish 1926 Venetian Gothic mansion, Ca’d’Zan. A highlight is the 3,800-square-foot, scale model of a 1900s circus, replete with animal and acrobatic acts under the big tent, trains, spectators, roustabouts, and miniature vignettes of real circus life.
BOTTOM: The Bay is a signature public park along Sarasota Bay.
RIGHT: Cà d’Zan was built in the mid-1920s as the winter retreat of the American circus mogul, entrepreneur, and art collector John Ringling and his wife Mable Burton Ringling.
12:30 pm Refuel in the Visitor’s Center at the Ringling Grillroom, seated inside or on the patio overlooking a pond and the lush campus. Fish and seafood, salads, burgers, and desserts will fortify you for the afternoon.
2:00 pm Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy is open limited times from September to May, but visitors love the quirky collection of paintings, sculptures, collages, ceramics, furniture, lighting, mosaics, and other arts and crafts on display. The festive sculpture garden with its full-growth trees cheerily festooned with lights and orchids is also pure joy.
3:00 pm The Bay is a low-key, sustainable urban oasis on 53 acres of prime waterfront near the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall that checks a lot of boxes. Appreciate the half-mile, meandering boardwalk, a mangrove bayou with kayak launch, open lawns, an amphitheater, food concession, and more. You might catch a free fitness class or a live music event.
6:00 pm Option 1: Dinner now—or later, after the sunset— your choice: Savor the fusion of award-winning Latin and American cuisine with a Peruvian accent at Selva Grill on Main St. The food and ambiance are modern, jazzy, and sophisticated, with ceviche as the star.
Option 2: Walk to one of downtown’s cool rooftop bars at either the Art Ovation Hotel or The Westin and take the
elevator to memorable sunset views of the city and bay. When the sun has gone to bed, head to that dinner at Selva Grill.
SATURDAY
8:30 am The Breakfast House makes swoon-worthy sweet and tart coconut/pineapple/macadamia nut Island pancakes, inventive omelets, and other from-scratch-made dishes. Diners wait on the porch of this quaint, yellow Key West cottage, then settle inside the house or in the shaded back garden.
10:00 am Option 1: Work off your breakfast coma on scenic Lido Key, with a private or group kayak or paddleboard tour in the sun-dappled mangrove tunnels at the island’s southern tip. Kayaking SRQ will get you up close and personal with Sarasota Bay’s diverse wildlife and calm, clear waters.
Option 2: Assemble a picnic and head to the unmistakably magical Siesta Beach. Tip: Order an artisanal sando at Focaccia Sandwich + Bakery to go, and take an addictive, crispy-chewy loaf with you to nibble in the car. Then stop at Yoder’s in Pinecraft—Sarasota’s Amish and Mennonite snowbird enclave—and take away some delectable slices of fresh fruit or cream pie (note: the No.1 flavor is peanut butter cream.) Lastly, pick up a tasty cup of Guatemalan coffee from Postal 98 Café, once the Amish post office and now a cottagecore café.
Then, walk the three-mile shoreline of the #1 beach in the U.S.; swim, play volleyball, make castles in the soft sand, and relish your gourmet lunch.
2:00 pm Visit the Sarasota Art Museum, a striking 1920s brick landmark that once housed Sarasota High School and now celebrates the art of reinvention. Explore ever-changing contemporary exhibits, thought-provoking installations, and an inviting café courtyard that invites you to linger and be inspired.
When hunger strikes, dive into the Cuban Spanish fare at Columbia Restaurant, family-owned since 1905 and the oldest restaurant in Florida. Fans swear by the black bean soup, Cuban sandwiches, and famous 1905 salad, a tangy mélange of lettuce, ham, olives, and cheese made tableside.
8:00 pm A Difficult Choice: Take in a performance at the Asolo Rep, Sarasota Ballet, or Sarasota Orchestra and marvel at the world-class productions on offer.
10:30 pm If you have the oomph: Find Pangea Alchemy Lab, a moody speakeasy where mixologists create craft cocktails using unique infusions and house-made syrups. Part of the mystique is finding the entrance, cheekily tucked away in the alley behind Mélange Restaurant on Main St. Open until 2 a.m. on weekends.
SUNDAY
10:00 am Option 1: Devote your final Sarasota morning to nature at its curated best. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is conveniently located five minutes from downtown, adjacent to Bayfront Park. Nature bathes in 15 acres of waterfront gardens and a tropical conservatory. Rotating photography, art, and culture exhibits tie to the world-renowned orchid, bromeliad, and fern collections set among ancient Banyan trees and water features.
Option 2: The wonders of the sea unfold in a futuristic slice of contemporary architecture at Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA) in Nathan Benderson Park. Learn about coral reefs, sharks, rays, sea turtles, manatees, and over 100 Florida native marine species swimming in one million gallons of watery habitat. The striking new facility joins science and hands-on exhibits with live demonstrations of active marine research.
12:30 pm Sarasotans love to give their visitors a waterfront, al fresco dining experience. What better place to end your 36-hour vacation than a restaurant that both Open Table and Yelp have called one of the “100 Best” for its scenery, seafood, and romance? The Dry Dock Waterfront Grill on south Longboat Key hits all the right notes for impeccably fresh fish, seafood, and land-side entrees served on the patio at the Boathouse Marina.
Now, change from flip-flops back to shoes, sweaty and satisfied with your small sampling of the deep charm and aesthetics of 36 hours in Sarasota.

COLOR CRUSH Mocha Mousse
By Lucy Hope
This year, the Pantone Color Institute declared Mocha Mousse as the color of the year.
This warming, brown hue feels as indulgent as chocolate and as grounding as your first sip of morning coffee. Described by Pantone as “imbued with richness” and answering our collective desire for comfort, Mocha Mousse embodies both sophistication and approachability.
In fashion, designers are embracing the shade in ways that elevate the everyday. Silk in this sumptuous tone blurs the line between leisure and luxury.
Beyond the runway, Mocha Mousse is quietly transforming interiors. After years of stark whites dominating modern homes, the pendulum is swinging back toward warmth.
Mocha Mousse, at its core, is a return to comfort and tactility—a reminder that color doesn’t just shape how we look, but how we live.

Statement ceilingsTRANSFORM A SPACE
By Kiran Gill
For too long, ceilings have been an afterthought in interior design, left bare or painted in predictable shades of white, cream and beige. But things are looking up for this oft-neglected space as designers reclaim the fifth wall and transform it into a focal point through bold color, intricate molding, wallpaper or even hand-painted frescoes.

With maximalist design trends on the rise, every surface – even the ceiling – is an opportunity for self-expression. A show-stopping ceiling is a statement piece in its own right, whether in a traditional Parisian apartment adorned with plasterwork or a contemporary penthouse featuring a sleek, darklacquered ceiling.
Yet, it is important to maintain a sense of balance when playing with a statement ceiling. “It has to be thoughtful and integrated, but not overpowering,” said Thomas Lavin, proprietor of the Thomas Lavin showrooms in Los Angeles and Laguna Niguel, California.
“After all, you want guests looking at each other, not at the ceiling,” Mr. Lavin said. “So [you want] a ceiling with a personality and dynamism that adds to the atmosphere but does not dominate.”
The quickest way to spice up a ceiling is with an unexpected paint choice – deep jewel tones enrich the space with warm, while soft pastels evoke the ethers.
Should the ceiling be painted a contrasting hue from the walls, drama and depth are added to the room.
Homeowners and designers also have the option to use the same paint color on the walls and ceiling for an unexpected and daring treatment.
“For my kitchen, I simply painted the ceiling the same black as the walls since I wanted to create a dramatic space without boundaries – one that put the focus on the view outside and to the other rooms that the kitchen adjoins, and a black ceiling was a daring choice that accomplished those goals,” Mr. Lavin said.
Beyond paint, one can wallpaper the ceiling with the option to go subtle or bold depending on the room. With wallpaper, one can also play with different textures and prints.
“For my parents’ house, we installed a beautiful blue ikat grasscloth from Christopher Farr Cloth in the dining room, and then used a luminescent silver tea paper on the ceiling,” Mr. Lavin said. “The juxtaposition of the two colors and materials created a wonderfully welcoming and dramatic space.”
Murals and hand-painted frescoes, whether delicate floral prints, art deco patterns or ethereal cloudscapes, are another way to spice up the fifth wall and turn it into a work of art reminiscent of palatial European estates.
“I’m loving how so many people are putting large-scale panoramas on the ceiling: nature scenes, abstracts, painterly scenes, graffiti, you name it,” Mr. Lavin said.
“Area Environments, one of the lines I carry in my showroom, is being utilized by so many designers for ceiling installs because they offer that kind of big, statement design.”
A designer can add an air of grandeur to a space with ornate crown molding and ceiling medallions. Another alternative for a touch of opulence is gold leafing, lacquered finishes and reflective surfaces that amplify light. Finally, homeowners and designers can also work alongside artists to create bespoke artwork or sculptural lighting for something that is truly one-of-a-kind.
“
“So [you want] a ceiling with a personality and dynamism that adds to the atmosphere but does not dominate.”
Mr. Lavin said.
Interior designers and homeowners alike are beginning to recognize that the ceiling is more than just a blank space; it’s an opportunity, as a thoughtfully designed ceiling transforms the entire spatial experience of a room.
With the right touches, a statement ceiling can elevate a room from ordinary to extraordinary. So the next time you’re designing a space, don’t forget to look up.
