Welcome Home! We have wanted to shout these words from the bell tower for over 5 months. The 2019-2020 season was unlike any in our history and the beginning of the 20202021 season is sure to follow suit. On August 3, 2020, the Governor allowed the slow opening of performing arts venues across the state. With this opening came several stipulations to include limited capacity seating based on the Fire Marshall’s posted limit and the mandatory usage of masks by all who enter and participate in the event. Since being closed in March of 2020, the team and Foundation began the task of feeling through the dark to prepare for reopening. We knew this would happen eventually; this grand Victorian Lady told us such. We all stopped to listen to her, feel her strength, and to trust her. She, after all, had seen more turmoil and more celebrations than our staff combined. She taught us to plan, practice, communicate and believe. The statistics of independent venues around the world that will not survive these events is staggering. It’s not just the venues. It’s the staff, the bartenders, the stagehands, the artists, their catering and lighting and stage crews, the agents. The impact is immense and rarely talked about.
WELCOME TO THE 2020-2021 SEASON However, the journey is not over. Within this brochure, you will see one ticket price and also limited seating options. These are measures to help us meet the reduced capacity requirement and to ensure all guests have an equal chance at seating under the current conditions. The Opera House takes the role of an economic engine very seriously. Our staff live in Newberry, the restaurant owners are our neighbors, we can call each other by our first names. We must open, reduced capacity, higher prices to cover the costs, but we MUST ensure that our neighbors and friends and staff have jobs. And, that we provide a respite from the world and become the place to responsibility play in South Carolina. 2020 is unlike anything we’ve seen. However, I would argue it has provided opportunities above the challenges. A new Season Magazine, enhanced training, streamlined and upgraded services, enhanced communication with guests, store owners, and artists which have in turn brought life to downtown Newberry. This has ensured jobs and brought smiles to all those who visit with us. As I close, please take the time to read Penelope’s Pointers. I think Penelope, our resident ghost, is happier than anyone to have artists and guests back! I believe we were starting to drive her towards the light. Come visit and play with us - Penelope and the team would love to see you.
Molly Fortune, Executive Director Having a show isn’t just about making a phone call, agreeing on a price, selling some tickets, plugging in an amplifier, and opening the doors. Entertainment, Live Entertainment, is a refined dance honed on years of work and on the backs of many. The Arts MUST SURVIVE if we as a downtown and community want to survive and thrive. Utilizing the strength and ideas of the staff, guests, volunteers, and the Foundation Board of Directors, a plan emerged for re-opening, practicing and refining came into the frame and each day we peeled back better ways to welcome everyone back when the time came. We also shared the plan online, received feedback, talked with the Dept of Commerce, and practiced some more. We are proud of the safety measures we have implemented to include: daily temperature checks of staff, ambassadors and artists; increased sanitation and wiping down of all high touch surfaces multiple times a day; fogging of the building; masks and gloves by staff; touchless payments; pre-ordering of drinks; enhanced touchless ticket scanning; special entrance for GAR donors and season sponsors to name a few.

Guests who are ill are encouraged not to attend, please check your temperature before coming to the performance (CDC defines fever as 100.4 or higher). Guests are required to wear masks as social distancing measures may be difficult to maintain, per the Governor’s order. All staff and ambassadors will wear masks and will be temperature checked before working. Seating has been reduced, reallocated to be staggered, and sold in pairs with only 1 tier VIEW REDUCED CAPACITY SEATING CHART (see page 21) Cleaning and sanitation regiments have been increased especially for high touch surfaces (railings & seats). Building doors and seating will open 45 minutes prior to the performance. There is no entry prior to that time. Sitting and loitering in the lobby will not be available. Only one door will be open for entrance (Boyce St. next to Memorial Park under the NOH canopy). Each person is to hold their own ticket as it will be scanned at the entrance door. The elevator will be limited to two people plus the elevator operator. We recommend using the stairs. Artist merchandise as well as meet and greets have been suspended during this time.

A Dufford Institute for Cultural Diversity Event in conjunction with Newberry Arts For All (NAFA) This screening is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom, a new musical filled with traditional and original Gospel and Freedom songs, tells the moving and intimate true story of Lynda Blackmon Lowery, the youngest person to walk all the way from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on the Voting Rights March in 1965. Jailed nine times before her 15th birthday, Lynda, and her friends and neighbors, fought alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to secure the right to vote for African Americans. Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club, High Art, Psych), adapted the award-winning memoir by Lynda Blackmon Lowery (Dial Press, 2016) for the stage. Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom is directed by Fracaswell Hyman and the music director is Joshuah Brian Campbell, the 2020 Oscar and Golden Globe nominee for “Stand Up” (The Harriet Tubman Musical). Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom tells the true story of the sometimes brutal period of Civil Rights history in the United States. There is video of actual events and stylized dramatizations. Some of this content might not be appropriate for children under 10.

Bandleader and ringleader Michael Mwenso, was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone, West Africa. At age 10, he and his mother moved to London when she married an Englishman. A year and a half later, she found herself a single mother, struggling to deal with the tragic death of her husband. Michael says his connection with music really started, “. . .out of loneliness, being an only child, and also losing my mother, because she couldn’t look after me the way she wanted.” For years he stayed with “this incredible man,” who had been his mother’s landlord when she lived in London before. He was a lover of African American music. Michael remembers, “I would absorb myself in his record collection from Bessie Smith to Ray Charles to Etta James to Louis Armstrong.” Having gotten to know some of the staff at legendary London jazz club Ronnie Scott’s during the 1970s, Michael’s mother allowed Michael to start, “. . . going to the club as a young child.” He saw the whole range of black music, including “the Mount Rushmore of jazz musicians Ray Charles, James Brown, Betty Carter, all these kind of people.” He looked older than he was and carrying his trombone, he’d sneak into sound checks for artists by saying he was “with the band.” The Shakes is one of the groups that came out of a community of young musicians created by Michael after coming to New York City to work with Jazz at Lincoln Center. The group even includes a tap dancer. Michela Marino is an “added rhythmic percussive instrument.” ‘Shake’, according to Michael, is a word used within the community “to define anything and everything. . . . like: The Shakes; what’s the shake (what happened)? It’s our own little language.” They have been together about seven years and all but one or two are “kind of immigrants.” The African diasper experience fermented into Jazz music at it height of popularity in Harlem 100 years ago. That sound then went back into the world and has influenced generations of musicians across the globe.

When jokingly referred to as the “bandleader and ringleader,” he laughingly replies, “Oh yes! No, definitely! I am very blessed that I am able to lead.” He speaks of the band members’ humility in allowing him to lead because they’re all incredible bandleaders/artists on their own. According to Michael, Harlem 100 is part of a presentation created to present the music of the Harlem Renaissance. “What it is and what is was; and how it influenced the world. It gives us the ability to . . . genuflect to our ancestors,” he explains. Michael goes on to speak of how much more important it is now, with the “racial division and strife “in the world to bring awareness to the entirety and greatness of the African-American, and what these people did, so we can use black music to help people heal.” People attending the performance can expect to experience a musical celebration that will, among other things, provide an understanding of the history, the culture, and excellence of Black people especially during the magical creative explosion called the Harlem Renaissance. A montage of pictures related to the Harlem Renaissance will be shown in the background during the performances. One hopes audience members will be ignited to read the writers, see the art, and hear more of the music of the artists presented. For Michael the current climate has proved very interesting. The group has done online concerts, “and such.” “People are reaching out saying, now is the time that we need the group…[they] can really see what we are doing.”

If you have ever been in love, fallen out of love, lost a love and found it again, you need to be at the Newberry Opera House February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day, to hear Peabo Bryson, “The Voice of Love.”
He prepared for this noble profession in high school, where his music director thought so much of his talent that he asked him to start a jazz band. His real education, however, began when he, at 14, began singing backup for Al Freeman and the Upsetters, a local band.
Two years later Peabo began touring with the successful local band, Moses Dillard and his Tex-Town Display. The band required that every member be able to sing backup and front, write, play several instruments, compose, arrange and know his way around a This Greenville, South Carolina native is a two-time Grammy® sound studio. Songwriter Peabo Bryson will also share some of his new songs about love from his latest album “Stand for Love.” Even after all of these years, Peabo is still writing about love. He said, “Every love is like a snowflake, no two are alike…I will never run out of words to write about love.” Peabo’s understanding of love first began with his mother Marie Bryson. She had a passionate love of music. He said, “Take my mother out of the equation, and I wouldn’t happen.” She took her children to the Greenville auditorium to hear all of the music greats of the time. He said, “I bet I saw Sam Cooke 15 times. I saw Jackie Wilson, all the greats.” By five or six years old he was singing along with them. Folks in the audience would turn around and say, “Listen to that little boy sing.” Even then people could feel the emotion in his voice.
He quickly learned that duets are not a competition. However, it was with Roberta Flack that he truly discovered the secret to great duets. It’s about connecting with your partner, the song, and the audience. Music critics have acclaimed his mastery of “intimate music.” “New York Times” critic Jon Pereles dubbed him the “Pavarotti of Soul.” September 2-4, 2016 Peabo Bryson was a featured performer at the Greater Charleston Low Country Jazz Festival. It was founded to share the traditional and culturally beautiful music of mariachi with the world. Students (male and female) ranging from ages 14-19 in the school system in Chicago make up the group. We have been traveling across the United States, Mexico, and Canada sharing this music. Q: Did y’all write the song “Just the Way” and what’s the meaning behind the song? A: Yes, I was one of the writers on it. It’s about loving somebody just the way they are. I think it’s just letting somebody know that you like their imperfections, and you love them for who they are and that nobody’s perfect. Q: Why did y’all choose the Country music genre? A: Country music chose us I think. It took us a while to figure out our sounds. Timing is a beautiful thing. Where we were, we couldn’t get a record deal because people couldn’t put us in a category. We were always told we needed to be in Nashville but …once people like Jason Aldean and Eric Church and Big and Rich kinda came into Country it…opened up some doors for us that weren’t there before. Q: From where did you get the name Parmalee? A: The town of Parmele, NC where we started, it is spelled, Parmele. So if that was on a billboard you could imagine that nobody would ever be able to pronounce that, so we changed the spelling, to Parmalee. Parmele is about three miles from where Scott, Berry, and I grew up right near East Carolina University. That’s where we had the barn that we could practice in that we rented from my dad’s friend.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, welcome back to YOUR Newberry Opera House! Please know that we have missed you during these challenging times and are grateful for your continued support and, indeed, for your return. During these past months, having a silent stage due to the necessary closure caused by the Pandemic of 2020 has certainly been difficult, but realizing that the historic and award-winning Newberry Opera House has stood fast during over a century of challenging times, including the Spanish Flu of 1918, there has been a comforting sense of resiliency knowing that the show would go on. Like a grand lady, the Newberry Opera House has awaited the return of her guests. Her grace, charm, and hospitality eagerly await to be experienced through the diverse and exciting program for the 2020-2021 season.

We reopen with a sense of both excitement and with caution. Please know that we are committed to the health of our patrons, staff, guests, and visitors. Be assured, as outlined in this publication, we will adhere to all recommended and regulated safety measures in our current and future operations; and, conversely, we thank you for your cooperation in following our protocol as well. Together, the show will go on! In these challenging times, the arts unite and uplift us. They provide us with an avenue into a higher level of enlightenment and entertain us with a myriad of emotions.
