Dear Friends, Longevity is defined as simply long life. Synonyms are continuance, continuity, lasting power, durability. As we enter the 21st year of successful programming inside a 136 year old building, longevity is a very appropriate description of the Newberry Opera House Performing Arts Center. Leaving a year of milestones and entering into a new decade brings a renewed energy, enthusiasm, power and life to the stage and halls that through the years have seen and heard more than we can imagine. These walls can and do talk! They are incredibly chatty, not a day goes by without being reminded that it is not just WHAT is on stage, but the EXPERIENCE off the stage that defines the Opera House. Several years ago I was honored to write an article for the World Monuments and Sites Commission regarding historic theatres. What I discovered through research and conversation is both simple and powerful, everyone has a story about a time they went to see a live performance. Couple this moment with the fact that America is the only place on the planet that honestly had more theatres than the population they could serve. For example, Newberry had at least 3; Rome, Georgia had 6; Augusta, Georgia had 7; Rapid City, South Dakota had 4. It’s a real treat to have guests come in and talk about their theatre back home, their first date (which sometimes is NOT with the person they are with!), the mood, where they ate, and finally, they tell us what the show was if they can remember. The Opera House is the repository for life moments both big and small. For example, she saw my children skip across the stage on my first day four years ago. One of our ambassador’s great grandmother play the piano for the silent films. A brick in the courtyard commemorates when Ms. Betty McAllister recived her engagement ring here in 1941. All these experiences are stored within these victorian walls. Longevity, yes this is a true solid word to describe the Newberry Opera House. Full of memories, full of dreams to come, full of love for her guests. Welcome Home. Come make memories that last long after the lights dim. Tell us your Opera House memory/story on Facebook #Operahousestory.
