Why We Celebrate Father’s Day

June 21st is the date of this years Father’s Day.

It is a meaningful celebration that recognizes the profound role fathers and father-figures play in shaping individuals, families, and society. Father’s Day offers a moment to pause and reflect on the contributions, sacrifices, and enduring influence of fathers. The reasons we celebrate this day are rooted in gratitude, recognition, emotional connection, and the broader understanding of what fatherhood represents.

Keep it up, Dads. Great job

In past generations, children would wrap a gift of a tie, wallet or even make an ashtray that they made in art class (everyone smoked back then). Our dads are not as sentimental as our mothers and might toss your card after reading, as she always saved in a special place. But it is necessary to give one to him anyway. It is an opportunity to acknowledge your father and how important he is to you.

If you are blessed to have a grandfather alive, it is even more important that you honor him. I suggest that your Dad make a toast at dinner to his own father, present or in heaven, and share a treasured memory with you. Celebrating Father’s Day is a way of saying “thank you” for those countless acts

Not all fathers fit into a single mold. Some are biological fathers, while others are stepfathers, adoptive fathers, grandfathers, uncles, mentors, or guardians who step into paternal roles. This day recognizes that fatherhood is defined not only by biology but by commitment, love, and responsibility. It broadens our understanding of family and emphasizes that anyone who nurtures, guides, and supports a young person can embody the spirit of a father. If your father can recognize a child that is without a Dad due to divorce or death and include them in your family festivities, those children will be fortunate.

Today’s Fathers have evolved beyond being the primary financial support of the family. They change diapers, drive carpool, prepare dinner, do bath time, coach sports and attend parent/teacher conferences. They have evolved into a wonderful, participating parent to shape the next generation.

A Game Beyond Sight

How Blind Soccer Is Creating Opportunity, Inclusion, and Impact

In a powerful moment for our community, Miami recently became the stage for something far greater than sport.

Through a special initiative supported by FIFA, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind hosted a landmark activation celebrating the growth of blind soccer—an adaptive sport that is opening doors for children with visual impairments and redefining what inclusion looks like in athletics.

Blind soccer, also known as football 5-a-side, is designed for athletes who are blind or visually impaired, using sound-based gameplay and teamwork to navigate the field. It is not only a Paralympic sport, but also a powerful tool for building confidence, independence, and connection among young players.

At the heart of this initiative is a shared belief: that every child deserves the opportunity to play, to belong, and to thrive.

The recent FIFA-supported grant activation brought together community leaders, advocates, and families to celebrate the expansion of blind soccer programming in the United States. Hosted at the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, the event marked an important

step toward increasing accessibility and creating new pathways for children to engage in sports regardless of ability.

For the families and children participating, the impact goes far beyond the field.

Programs like these provide more than athletic training—they foster independence, build confidence, and create a sense of community where children are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.

the Right Summer Camp

for Your Child

Summer camp has evolved far beyond simple childcare coverage. For many Miami families, it has become an opportunity for children to explore interests, develop confidence, build skills, and discover passions they may not encounter during the school year.

y the time June arrives, most parents are balancing work schedules, intense heat, and children with enough energy to power parts of the electrical grid. Camp selection often starts as a logistical decision, but the most meaningful summer experiences usually come from thinking beyond schedules and asking a bigger question: What kinds of experiences could help my child discover new sides of themselves this summer?

The answer is rarely one-size-fits-all. Children are not limited to a single interest, and summer can be one of the few seasons where they are free to experiment and try new things. Children are far more multidimensional than we sometimes give them credit for; the child who loves soccer may suddenly become fascinated by robotics or music production. The creative child who enjoys art may unexpectedly thrive in coding or cooking and I have yet to find a student who doesn’t love a Minecraft camp. Summer creates space for exploration in a way the school year often cannot.

That is why many families are intentionally mixing camp experiences throughout the summer. One week may focus on sports and teamwork, another on theater or visual arts, and another on STEM game-based learning or hands-on building activities. The goal is not overscheduling children into tiny executives with color-coded calendars

before fourth grade. The goal is exposure, curiosity, and discovery.

Mixed-format camps have also become increasingly popular because they combine different experiences within the same day. Some programs, including game-based STEM camps like those used in programs at Hive of Thinkrs, blend focused enrichment activities with traditional camp experiences such as sports, games, creative projects, and social activities. For parents concerned about children spending too much time on screens, this type of balance can feel especially valuable.

The strongest camps are often not the ones trying to create miniature experts by age eight. They are the ones creating environments where children feel comfortable experimenting, collaborating, creating, moving, problem-solving, and sometimes discovering interests nobody saw coming, including the child themselves.

And honestly, sometimes the biggest summer win is simply hearing your child talk excitedly about something new they cannot wait to try again tomorrow. In this special interview, Miami Kids Magazine speaks with Rodney Barreto, Co-Chairman of FIFA World Cup Miami 2026, about what this exciting moment means for our city, how families can be part of the celebration, and how the power of sports can inspire the next generation.

MIAMI IS PREPARING TO WELCOME THE WORLD FOR FIFA WORLD CUP 2026. WHAT DOES THIS MOMENT MEAN FOR OUR CITY?

This is a once in a generation moment for Miami. The World Cup brings the world’s attention to our neighborhoods, our parks, and our families, not just to the stadium. It’s a chance to showcase Miami as a global city. The World Cup means new energy in our communities, more opportunities to gather and celebrate the love of the game, and a sense of pride that our city is hosting a truly historic event.

WHY IS THIS ESPECIALLY MEANINGFUL FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES GROWING UP IN MIAMI?

The World Cup brings games that they usually watch on TV into their very own community. Kids will see world class players, fan zones, and community events in the same parks and neighborhoods where they play every week. That connection makes the tournament feel real and personal. Families can experience matches, festivals, and legacy programs together, creating memories that last far beyond just this summer. It shows young people that their city is important on the global stage and that they belong in that story.

MIAMI IS ONE OF THE MOST INTERNATIONAL CITIES IN THE COUNTRY. HOW DO YOU THINK OUR CULTURE AND DIVERSITY WILL MAKE THE WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE HERE UNIQUE?

Miami’s diversity is its superpower. On any weekend, you can hear different languages, taste food from across the world, and see kids cheering for teams from their parents’ home countries and their own favorites at the same time. That mix of cultures is exactly what the World Cup is about. Here, visiting fans will feel at home, and local families will see their cultures reflected on and off the pitch. The

result will be a tournament atmosphere that feels like a global block party with Miami’s own rhythm and spirit.

MANY KIDS IN MIAMI PLAY SOCCER OR ARE JUST DISCOVERING THE SPORT. HOW DO YOU HOPE THIS EVENT INSPIRES THE NEXT GENERATIONS?

The World Cup can turn curiosity into passion. When kids see the world’s best players competing in their city, it makes their own dreams feel like they can be achieved. Local clinics, mini pitches, and community events around the tournament give children more chances to try the sport, learn new skills, and meet friends from different backgrounds.

The hope is that some will keep playing for fun and health, others may pursue the sport more seriously, and all of them will carry the confidence that comes from setting goals, working hard, and seeing what is possible through dedication.

WHAT VALUES DO YOU THINK CHILDREN

CAN LEARN FROM SOCCER AND FROM AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT LIKE THE WORLD CUP?

Soccer teaches resilience and respect. Children learn how to communicate, support their teammates, and respond to both wins and losses with character. The World Cup adds a whole new layer. Kids see that people from different countries, languages, and cultures can compete fiercely and still show respect and sportsmanship. They learn that differences are something to celebrate. Together, the sport and the event reinforce values like discipline, inclusion, and the idea that we are part of a larger global community.

HOW DO YOU BELIEVE FIFA WORLD CUP 2026 CAN LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY FOR MIAMI BEYOND THE GAMES THEMSELVES?

A true legacy goes beyond just 90 minutes on the field. The World Cup can help create more safe places for kids to play, expand access to quality programs, and strengthen partnerships between schools, parks, and community organizations. Investments in mini pitches, youth programming, and SPORTS HAVE A UNIQUE ABILITY TO UNITE PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AROUND A COMMON PURPOSE. THAT SENSE OF CONNECTION, PRIDE, AND SHARED EXPERIENCE IS SOMETHING I HAVE CARRIED WITH ME EVER SINCE THOSE DAYS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH MIAMI KIDS AND FAMILIES AS WE GET READY FOR THIS HISTORIC SUMMER?

To Miami kids and families: this World Cup is for you. Enjoy the matches, learn about new countries, and take advantage of safe, family friendly events across our county. Use this moment to try something new, whether it’s kicking a ball for the first time or volunteering at a community event. Most of all, remember that the spirit of the World Cup is about unity, respect and joy. Miami has a chance to show the world how our families live those values every day.

IS THERE A PERSONAL MEMORY OR MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT MADE YOU UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF SPORTS TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER?.

I was the captain of my high school football team, and I vividly remember the camaraderie, sportsmanship, and mutual respect we shared on the field. Those experiences taught me the true power of sports to bring people together.

It wasn’t just about winning games — it was about learning that success comes through teamwork, trust, and strength in numbers. The lessons I learned as a young athlete have stayed with me throughout my entire life, whether in sports, business, or community leadership.

Sports have a unique ability to unite people from different backgrounds around a common purpose. That sense of connection, pride, and shared experience is something I have carried with me ever since those days on the football field.

Lifesavers Summer

Miami students are learning CPR, leadership, and heart-healthy habits.

What if your child could head into summer with a real-life superpower?

Not flying. Not invisibility. Something even more meaningful: the ability to help save a life.

As Miami families enjoy summer break, students across the community are carrying with them more than memories from the school year. They are also taking home

lifesaving skills, healthy habits, and the confidence to make a difference when it matters most.

Through programs like the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge, students are learning Hands-Only CPR, building leadership skills, and helping create healthier, safer schools and neighborhoods. The Kids Heart Challenge helps elementary students learn about heart health, teamwork,

kindness, and helping others through fun activities and school-wide challenges. The American Heart Challenge gives middle and high school students the chance to lead service projects, raise awareness, support lifesaving causes, and inspire classmates to take action.

This year, Epiphany Catholic School was one of the Miami schools participating in the Kids Heart Challenge, and its students made an incredible impact.

The school raised the most funds in support of the American Heart Association, with students and families raising $80,662, sharing heart-healthy information with 815 families, and helping 70 families learn HandsOnly CPR and the warning signs of a stroke.

Belen Jesuit Preparatory School also joined the effort through the American Heart Challenge, showing students they are never too young to make a difference. The school’s Heart Club recently received an American Heart Association grant to help expand CPR education and training opportunities on campus, empowering students to teach classmates about heart health, CPR, and how to become lifesavers in their community.

When someone experiences cardiac arrest, every second counts. CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival, and Hands-Only CPR is a skill anyone can learn. This summer, Miami students are carrying confidence, compassion, leadership, and the power to help save lives.
