Dear
Miami
Kids Magazine Family,
There is something truly special about this season in Miami, a time when love, connection, and
community feel stronger than ever. That spirit is the heartbeat of our February/March issue, and I am so proud to share it with you.
Our cover story, “A Rosado Kind of Love,” features Commissioner Ralph Rosado and celebrates what truly matters: family, service, and leading with heart. It’s a powerful reminder that love isn’t just something we celebrate, it’s something we live every day through community and compassion.
We’re also excited to present our Annual Spring & Summer Camp Guide, proudly sponsored by iSwim Academy. This is one of our most anticipated issues, created to help families plan ahead and discover incredible opportunities for their children to learn, grow, and make unforgettable memories.
This issue also includes our Museums, Attractions, and Landmarks Guide, highlighting some of the amazing places that make Florida such a vibrant city for families, along with our Valentine’s Gift Guide, filled with thoughtful ideas to celebrate all kinds of love.
One of the moments I cherish most each year is announcing our 2025 Readers’ Choice Award Winners. Our readers voted, and we are thrilled to celebrate the best services and businesses in our community. Congratulations to all the winners—and thank you to our readers for making your voices heard.
From my heart to yours, thank you for supporting Miami Kids Magazine. This publication is a labor of love, and I hope you feel the care and passion poured into every page of this issue.

The New Year is here! (Where did 2025 go?) As we look ahead, let’s focus this year on friendship and love—a guarantee that you will be happier and, in turn, spread happiness to others. I suggest making a list of those who are special to you and planning how you will express your appreciation for them. Love and friendship are what bind us together and help shape our identity—who we are and who we become.
As an infant grows over the months, they discover love for Mom, Dad, and siblings. This love is shared through smiles and joyful reactions whenever they see them—just recall how that makes you feel. Love is a
The Year of LOVE:
What Really Matters as We Move Forward
complex emotion and reminds us why we are not meant to live alone. It invites us to share our lives and blend our hopes and dreams, which only deepen with time. My role models were my grandparents, who were married for over sixty-five years. They always held hands while walking and kissed each other before bed every night.
One of the purest forms of love comes from chosen connections—friendship. Friendship can survive geography when someone moves away or time when life’s obligations create distance. I have friends from college (not revealing how many years ago!) whose relationships were built on acceptance and mutual admiration. Yet we always “pick up where we left off” whenever
we reconnect. True friends stand beside you with no expectations. They provide calm when you are freaking out, offer advice only when asked (without judgment), and always celebrate your successes and happy moments.
The “6 Cs of Friendship” are not a single word, but a core foundation: Communication, Commitment, Compassion, Consistency, Compromise, and Connection. Think of the few friends who truly fulfill this list—they are your true friends. And if you are really blessed, your spouse is also your best friend. Let’s make 2026 the year of honoring and acknowledging our friends and loved ones. Who comes to mind first?
Whether it is a structured exercise program or just part of your daily routine, all exercise adds up to a healthier heart. Walking, swimming, cycling, jogging or any of dozens of other activities can help.
Here are some tips for exercise success:
Dress For Success!
• Wear comfortable, properly fitting sneakers or flat shoes with laces.
• Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that’s appropriate for the weather and the activity you’re doing.
Make the time!
• Start slowly. Gradually build up to at least 30 minutes of activity on most or all days of the week (or whatever your health care professional recommends).
• Exercise at the same time of day so it becomes a regular part of your daily routine. For example, you might walk every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 12:30 p.m.
• Find a convenient time and place to do activities. Try to make it a habit but be flexible. If you miss an exercise opportunity, work physical activity into your day another way.
Keep reasonable expectations.
• If you have a high risk of coronary heart disease or some other chronic health problem, check with your health care professional before beginning a physical activity program.
• Look for chances to be more active
Getting Started: Tips for Long-term Exercise Success
• Ask family and friends to join you.
during the day. Walk the mall before shopping, take the stairs instead of the escalator or take 10 to 15 minute walking or activity breaks while watching TV or sitting.
• Don’t get discouraged if you stop for a while. Get started again and gradually work up to your old pace.
• Don’t exercise too vigorously right after meals, when it’s very hot or humid, or when you just don’t feel up to it.
Make it fun!
• Choose activities that are fun, not exhausting. Develop a variety of activities that you can enjoy.
• Whenever it is safe to do so, use music or audio books to keep you entertained.
Track and celebrate your success!
• Note your activities on a calendar or in a logbook. Write down the distance or length of time of your activity and how you feel after each session.
• Keep a record of your activities. Reward yourself at special milestones with non-food items, such as a small gift or shopping trip for yourself. Nothing motivates like success!

A Rosado Kind of Love. Celebrating Community, Family & Heart in Miami
In this special Valentine’s edition of Miami Kids Magazine, we spotlight a leader whose last name feels right at home in a month filled with roses, warmth, and love — Commissioner Ralph Rosado. Just like the rosy hue his name evokes, Commissioner Rosado brings color, care, and heart to the Miami he calls home. We dive into the stories that shaped him, the projects he’s passionate about, and the values he hopes to share with the next generation of Miami kids.
1. WHAT DOES “HOME” MEAN TO YOU, THEN AND NOW?
Home has always meant community to me. Growing up in Miami, home was more than a house. It was the neighbors, the parks, the schools, and the small businesses that became part of our daily lives.
Today, as a father raising my own family here, home means responsibility. It means making sure the neighborhoods that shaped me remain places where families feel safe, connected, and proud to live.
2. WHAT SPARKED YOUR PASSION FOR HELPING COMMUNITIES GROW?
Early on, I saw how thoughtful urban planning can improve everyday life. Safer streets, access to parks, and opportunities for small businesses all shape how families experience their city. That understanding stayed with me through my years in city planning, local government, and teaching. Helping communities grow in a smart and equitable way has always felt like important work.
3. WHICH PART OF CASA MATTERS MOST WHEN THINKING ABOUT FAMILIES AND KIDS?
CASA stands for Community, Adaptability, Safety, and Affordability. When it comes to families and kids, safety comes first—because parents need to know their children can walk to school, play in their neighborhoods, and grow up in places that feel secure. When safety is paired with affordability and strong community connections, families can truly thrive.
4. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WATCHING YOUR CHILDREN GROW UP IN MIAMI?
Watching my children discover and develop their own interests here has been incredibly rewarding. Our City offers so many paths in culture, education, and service. Seeing my own kids explore those opportunities reminds me why investing in our City’s future matters.
5. HOW DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ENJOY MIAMI TOGETHER?
We enjoy simple things. Spending time in our parks, visiting neighborhood restaurants, attending community events, and being together. Miami has a special energy, and sharing those everyday moments as a family keeps us rooted and together.

Years of Heart at the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities
For three decades, Dr. Michael Alessandri has been a guiding light for thousands of families in South Florida and the Keys. As Executive Director of the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD), he has helped create a community where individuals with autism and their families are both truly understood and supported. His leadership, rooted in compassion and connection, has made CARD one of the most trusted resources for families navigating the autism journey.
Dr. Alessandri’s career in the autism space began more than 40 years ago, long before autism awareness was widespread. Since 1981, he has dedicated himself to helping individuals with autism reach their fullest potential. At the University of Miami, where he has served since 1996, he is not only a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychology, but also a champion of community outreach, ensuring families feel seen, heard, and supported at every stage of life.
Under his guidance, CARD now serves over 19,000 families across Broward, MiamiDade, and Monroe Counties, offering nocost, evidence-based services across the lifespan, from early childhood through
adulthood. CARD meets families throughout their journey: at home, in schools, in workplaces, and throughout the community. Through initiatives like the Autism Friendly Initiative and partnerships supporting meaningful employment for adults, CARD continues to expand its reach and impact under Dr. Alessandri’s steadfast leadership.
At Miami Kids Magazine, we are proud to support CARD as part of our commitment to families with special needs. Together, we work to elevate awareness, share resources, and highlight the beauty and strength within the special needs community. Our collaboration reflects a shared belief that every child deserves a loving, accepting, and empowered environment and every family deserves support along the way.
As Dr. Alessandri marks his 30th anniversary this year with CARD, we honor not just his professional achievements, but the genuine care that he brings to every interaction. Families describe him as warm, attentive, and deeply invested in their well-being. His accolades speak to his accomplishments, but it is his unwavering commitment to families that defines his legacy.
As part of his deep commitment to strengthening autism services, education, and community support, he has made a planned gift to the University of Miami to benefit CARD, designating a percentage of his retirement assets to advance its mission in perpetuity. He has also established a planned gift to his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Rochester. Additionally, Dr. Alessandri and his family created the Alessandri Grados Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation, supporting initiatives that reflect their values and long-standing commitment to service and community engagement.
We celebrate Dr. Alessandri’s extraordinary impact and look forward to continuing this important work together across South Florida.
