THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE Janice Barefoot served on the Board of Trustees from 2020 to 2026. During her six years of service, she was an active member of the Financial Oversight and Risk Assessment (FORA) Committee and the Audit Committee. Janice provided thoughtful guidance throughout the audit process, helping strengthen the Board’s financial oversight and supporting sound governance practices. Her steady commitment and expertise were greatly valued. Sean Clancy served on the Board of Trustees for a remarkable 21 years, from 2002 to 2008 and again from 2011 to 2026. Throughout his tenure, he served on the Financial Oversight and Risk Assessment (FORA), Campaign, and Executive (EXCO) Committees, and held the role of Board Secretary from 2020 to 2026. Sean’s most significant contribution was his leadership in fundraising, helping advance the school’s philanthropic efforts and supporting its long term growth and financial strength. His dedication, leadership, and years of service have left a lasting impact on Miami Country Day School.
THANK YOU TO SEAN CLANCY, TRUSTEE EMERITUS Sean Clancy began his service on the Board of Trustees in 2001 and has since served the school selflessly in many capacities. His journey began first as a parent when he and his wife, Dina Cellini, enrolled their children, MCDS lifers, Conor ‘04 and Columbia ‘11. Their commitment to MCDS continues as alumni parents.
former trustee, parent, and friend, Roger Koch, recognized Sean from the mound for his extraordinary vision and leadership. Sean’s work has been tireless as Chair of the Development (Philanthropy) Committee for almost 30 years, including 20 with former Head, John Davies, to complete the Campaign for the Arts and open the Center for the Arts in 2017.
Sean’s passion for Country Day, combined with his competitive spirit, made him a natural leader in advancing the school’s growth. Working alongside fellow trustees and parents, he helped inspire the creation and led the Securing the Future campaign, which resulted in the Koch Family Athletic Complex and Franco Center, completed in 2011.
Sean’s enduring commitment to Country Day is rooted in his belief in its mission, leadership, students, teachers, and future. He believes in striving to be the best and has devoted that same conviction and belief in Country Day becoming the best independent school possible. His individual contributions have been remarkable, and equally important is his ability to inspire others to join in that collective effort.

What aspect of the school’s mission resonates most deeply with you? KA: What resonates most deeply with me is MCDS’s commitment to ensuring that every child is truly known. Every student has unique talents, interests, and aspirations, and Country Day recognizes that there is no single path to success. Rather than expecting students to fit into a rigid mold, the school provides diverse academic, extracurricular, leadership, and service opportunities that allow each child to develop their own strengths and passions. As a parent, I have seen firsthand how meaningful that personalized approach can be, and I believe it is one of the qualities that truly distinguishes MCDS. SC: I’m impressed by the school’s recently adopted strategic plan that will lead the school’s next evolution. I commend the members of the Board and Strategic Planning Committee who served the school in this way. I believe in academic excellence. While the school already holds high academic standards, the commitment to continually raise those standards is a core strategic focus aligned with the school’s mission. We have both a great opportunity and challenge ahead of us. Retaining and attracting excellent educators allows us to run a first-class institution. Providing career growth, professional opportunities, and support is not simple, especially in a competitive and expensive place like Miami. We must continue to invest in retaining and recruiting top-caliber educators.
While facilities are less important, our community must continue investing in our campus and facilities to provide spaces with the size, flexibility. and functionality to service the school’s goals around quality academics.
What do you hope to contribute to the school in your service on the Board of Trustees? KA: I hope to bring a unique perspective shaped by my experiences as an MCDS parent, healthcare executive, entrepreneur, and public health leader. Throughout my career, I have focused on innovation, strategic growth, and building organizations that create meaningful impact. I look forward to working alongside my fellow trustees to help ensure that MCDS continues to evolve, innovate, and remain a leader in education for generations to come. SC: I will first listen to absorb the insights I know will come from those around the table who already have lots of experience. Over time, I hope to contribute my own professional and life experiences in ways that help advance the school’s strategic objectives. I know and appreciate that the number one focus of the Board is fiduciary responsibility, not school management. Mariandl and her leadership team are responsible for supervising the curriculum and day-to-day operations. The Board’s role is to remain focused on the Strategic Plan, providing guidance, support, and stewardship to support Mariandl and her team as needed.
Why do you believe philanthropy is essential to Country Day as an independent school?
I was growing up and this is my first time to serve on a school board and I know she would be proud.
KA: Excellence requires investment. Tuition provides the foundation for the day-to-day operating expenses of an independent school, but philanthropy is what makes innovation and transformation possible. It enables MCDS to attract exceptional faculty, invest in new technologies, enhance its facilities, expand student programs, and pursue bold initiatives to prepare students for the future.
Investing in the education of children is one of the most meaningful things we can do. I became involved with the school because of my son, but I also hope I can play a small part in creating an educational experience that benefits many other children and families.
Supporting the school philanthropically is an investment not only in today’s students, but in the continued strength and leadership of MCDS for years to come. SC: The operation of an independent school is expensive; any private education institution seeking to provide excellence in education requires a lot of money including tuition and donations. Even though it’s a big commitment by families, tuition doesn’t pay for everything and philanthropy fills the gap.
What brings you joy outside of your professional and volunteer work? KA: Some of my greatest joys come from life’s simple moments cooking for family and friends, golfing with my wonderful husband Bob, and fishing. So if anyone is looking for a fishing partner, I’m always happy to join! Our son, Andrew, is a proud member of the Class of 2026, and attends Duke University. Our daughter, Anna, graduated from Duke in 2023 and she is now an associate at JP Morgan and living in New York.
I believe that part of our responsibility as members of the community is to contribute at whatever level we can. If someone has the means to step up and donate more so that everyone benefits, that is important and impactful. While everyone has different resources and points of view around philanthropy, I hope to do what our family can and to help others understand that every gift matters.
SC: My wife Giselle and my family. I have six children in various stages of life, and it’s a blessing.
Can you share a teacher, mentor, or experience that influenced your own educational journey?
My youngest, Benjamin, has been at MCDS for two years and looks forward to first grade this year.
KA: As a teen, I lost my father to a sudden illness, but I was fortunate to have an exceptional step-father enter my life as I was setting off to college. He encouraged me to develop more ambitious goals for my education and more importantly, he helped me believe that I was capable of accomplishing more than I had imagined. He also taught me the power of setting long-term strategic goals in my personal and professional career. That lesson in foresight and planning has stayed with me and continues to shape how I live my life and mentor my children.
What gives you the greatest optimism about today’s students?
SC: Two people immediately come to mind, my mother and my grandfather. Both have passed away, but their influence continues to shape my life. My father’s family came from rural Missouri, where generations worked as farmers. My grandfather was the first to go to college and that set the bar for our family. He became a university professor and that made him wealthy in terms of knowledge and education. My father attended the University of Michigan and had a successful career as an advertising executive. I attended public schools in Chicago, and because of the opportunities my parents created through education, I was able to attend Harvard. I believe education creates both social and economic opportunity. My mother studied early childhood education at the University of Michigan. She taught Kindergarten, preschool, and eventually opened a cooperative nursery school in Chicago. My Mom was President of the School Board when
I am a sports nut and played football at Harvard. I’m active and work to stay fit. I like to play golf and watch sports. My wife is Brazilian and we enjoyed watching the World Cup with our son.
KA: While most people in my generation are still learning to adapt to technology reshaping our lives, today’s students are embracing new technologies with remarkable confidence and curiosity. They are learning faster, exploring ideas more deeply, and solving problems in ways that were unimaginable just a few years ago. What gives me optimism is not simply their ability to use tools like AI, but their willingness to learn, adapt, and think creatively. I believe this generation will leverage technology to build careers, solve challenges, and create opportunities that we cannot yet imagine. Yet they can only do that with a solid foundation in critical thinking, ethics, citizenship, communication and collaboration….which makes an MCDS education even more important than ever before. SC: I’m an optimistic person. Despite the many challenges and worries in the world today, I honestly believe this is a great time to be alive. There is an abundance of opportunity with the advancement in health care and technology; in all aspects of our lives. Today’s students are on the threshold of that future and I’m excited to see how they will go out and make things happen. As the world continues to change, it’s equally important that we remain grounded in our values and committed to our mission as a school to support our students in preparing to make meaningful contributions to the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as a Trustee for Miami Country Day School. Mo and I are proud of the school for the outstanding programs, beautiful campus, and the people who make up this extraordinary community. We are excited for the experiences our own children have enjoyed, as well as for those to come for our children and all the others joining the Country Day Family. Every aspect of the school responded to this past year’s theme, Elevate, and, as Mariandl shared in her opening message of this report, because of you, the school also elevated its philanthropy. As a Trustee, I work closely with Mariandl and David Smith, Chief Advancement Officer, other trustees on the campaign committee, and members of the Advancement Team. I am proud of the many ways our community supports the mission. Surpassing $3 million in the Spartan Impact Fund, combined with the continued momentum of our Build the Legacy capital campaign, we generated more than $10 million in cash during the year. This is a true reflection of what is possible when a community comes together around a shared purpose. It is an exciting time as we work together to continue to build our culture of philanthropy. As shared in the recent Beacon magazine, David Smith offered, “It takes an ongoing process of communication, relationship building, and shared commitment of all stakeholders; it begins with thoughtful one-on-one engagement to connect individuals to the needs of the school, to the opportunity for involvement, and to the tangible outcomes of their philanthropic support. We want people to understand why their giving matters.” In the new school year, work will continue, and we will all be asked to make our commitments to the Spartan Impact Fund and Build the Legacy Campaign to the best of our ability. 1938 SOCIETY The 1938 Society recognizes the leadership of those benefactors whose cumulative monetary gifts or irrevocable gifts to Miami Country Day School have reached $1 million or more. In 2015, during the school’s 75th Anniversary year, former Head of School, Dr. John Davies, recognized members of the inaugural class of the 1938 Society. A sculpture titled Wisdom by Santiago Medina was installed on the Plaza de Colombia as a symbolic representation to honor present and future members. New locker rooms for home and visiting teams, a dedicated training suite, and private coaches’ offices A new lobby showcases the Spartan Athletic Hall of Fame, alongside the school’s new Spartan Store Students of all ages interact in meaningful ways. Physical education classes introduce the importance of movement, strength, and healthy habits, developing a positive relationship with fitness from an early age. It serves as the primary training hub for Spartan athletic teams and is the home court for the volleyball and basketball teams. Students can develop strength and conditioning skills through the weightlifting club or by participating in core and strength training programs. The programming possibilities continue to evolve.

Last year was a big year at Miami Country Day School. We opened the Woodhouse Athletic Center, adding 30,000 square feet of fitness and wellness space to our campus. We also increased the staffing in the Office of College Counseling. We hosted TEDx in our Center for the Arts with amazing presentations from our students. We established an endowment fund for coaching excellence, and we launched a new strategic plan, The Country Day Way Forward. These accomplishments represent some of the many ambitions of Miami Country Day School at this important moment in the school’s history, and I want to thank our donors for turning those ambitions into reality. Simply put, tuition dollars pay the school’s bills, and our institutional goals and ambitions are funded by donations. Every gift from every donor, no matter the amount, allows our school to grow and thrive. Each year, we ask for donations to the Spartan Impact Fund to support the aspirations of our Head of School, our faculty and staff, and most importantly, our students. We want to say yes to every great idea from every teacher, every administrator, and every student. We never want financial limitations to stand in the way of innovation, creativity, or inspiration. For example, we created an Artist-in-Residence program, renovated the cafeteria over the summer, and expanded our Wellness curriculum. All thanks to our generous donors. This past year, hundreds of you donated and helped us reach a record amount of $3,101,436. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution. Together, we reached that record number and made a huge difference for Miami Country Day School. The Office of Advancement is focused on building an operation that serves the entire community. We want to support every family as they grow in their philanthropic journey. A gift of gratitude “There are teachers, and then there are teachers.” That is how Allue and Andrew Aherrera describe Ms. Barge and the meaningful JK4 experience she created for their daughter, Andi. At the close of the school year, the Aherreras made an additional gift to the Spartan Impact Fund in honor of Ms. Barge’s professionalism, kindness, and lasting impact, noting that while Andi may not fully recognize it yet, Ms. Barge’s influence will carry her for years to come.

A Legacy of Teaching, Friendship, and Giving After a 40 year teaching career, Helen Rees retired in 2006 from MCDS where she taught and served as Dean of Students for 23 of those 40 years. Helen has been a consistent donor to the Spartan Impact Fund for almost 40 years. What motivated her to give to the school where she was a teacher and Alumni Parent? She recalled that it was shortly after their older daughter began college in Boston. “We appreciated how thoroughly Country Day had prepared her and it is my gratitude that continues to motivate me to contribute every year. The foundation our two daughters, Sarah Rees Carroll ‘89 and Becca Rees Ashton ‘93, received at MCDS continues to influence my giving.”
“All of us made lifelong friends at Country Day. After years as a public school teacher, I felt like I had finally found my place at MCDS. Midway in my teaching career, I found the freedom to create and the support from other teachers and the administration that helped me grow in my profession. Though I have retired in California where my daughters live, colleagues from MCDS are still among my closest friends. When I visit I continue to be amazed at how the campus has grown while still keeping the core values that mean so much to me.”

Juliette Fulton 1962 – 2026 Juliette joined MCDS in 2004 and served in multiple roles throughout the school. As a teacher, she gave students the confidence that comes from knowing someone truly believes in you. Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2017, she continued showing up with love and energy, always giving her best to her students. She completed her bachelor’s degree this past December. Juliette had a special gift for nurturing curiosity in our youngest learners. A founding member of the Lower School Spartan Avengers FIRST LEGO League robotics team, she encouraged students to embrace challenges and value teamwork. In May, Juliette passed peacefully at home surrounded by love. Her reassuring smile and steadfast belief that everything would be okay comforted people. She is survived by her sons, MCDS alumni Jawann Fulton ’04 (Tahisia), Taqwann Fulton ’09 (Alexi), and Kashif Fulton ’11; her sister and closest friend, Annette Fulton; five brothers; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who were family.
Shirley Schwan Harris 1931 – 2026 Shy of her 95th birthday, Shirley Harris passed away peacefully on May 13 at her home. Shirley was born on June 25, 1931, in Hannibal, Missouri. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from University of Missouri. Harris moved to Miami with her parents where she started teaching at MCDS in 1953. She was only the third female teacher hired since the school’s founding in 1938 as an all-boys boarding school. In 1956, she married Ken Harris who also started teaching at Country Day in 1953, and went on to serve as the school’s 2nd headmaster from 1963 to 1980. They raised their family in Miami Shores and remained connected to the school over the years. Shirley leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion that will forever be remembered by the many hearts she touched throughout her life. She is survived by her children, Kenneth B. Harris ‘76, Donna Harris Osborne ‘82 (Jack), her granddaughter, Morgan Nicole Osborne; and her granddaughters, Lauren Thiel and Dustin Brenske. A private service and Celebration of Life for friends was held June 26, 2026.
Coach Steven L. Shafor 1945 - 2025 Steven was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family deeply. He lost his battle with Alzheimer’s far too soon. Raised in North Miami, Steven graduated from North Miami High School in 1963 and later from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. A third-generation pharmacist, he owned pharmacies throughout Dade, Broward, and Collier counties. While he took great pride in his profession, his true passion was coaching high school football at Miami Country Day School, Community School of Naples, and St. John Neumann in Naples. More than wins, Steven valued mentoring his players to become their best, both on the field and in life. The respect he shared with them was lasting and mutual. Steven is survived by his wife, Lynn Shafor; daughter Kimberly Shafor (Michael Martinez); son Michael Shafor (Kelly); stepdaughter Leslie Hauser Tobin ’88 (Michael); stepson Michael Hauser ’90 (Shannon); his siblings; and many beloved grandchildren.

Returning to Campus IN A DUAL ROLE To be a Country Day graduate, an alumnus, and return to campus as a current parent, brings a special sense of MCDS pride. For 50 of our community members, it is a role they embrace and the school celebrates. In April, they attended the 2nd annual Alumni Current Parents Breakfast with their children, MCDS students, highlighting the unique full-circle journey of Spartan families. Gathering in the lobby of the Woodhouse Athletic Center, they enjoyed meaningful conversations, met new friends, and shared stories that spanned generations from the Class of 1987 to 2007. This event once again underscored the lasting impact of MCDS and the enduring pride of being part of the Spartan family.
ALUMNI BASEBALL GAME Over 40 alumni returned to campus to play the 21st annual Alumni Baseball game on May 10. Since 2005, Chuck Sennett, Director of Athletics, meets former Spartan players and current team members for a morning of baseball fun and reminiscing. This year included a special recognition of Roger Koch for his support of the Koch Athletic Complex as this will become part of the new Upper School, future practicees and games will be at Barry University as new partners for MCDS athletics.
