e WEEDING ROLLER UNRIVALLED: TACKLES WEEDS

(LITERALLY) AT THE ROOT

eWeeding Roller

Controlling weeds in a smart and sustainable way—while ensuring that unwanted vegetation does not quickly return and no use of pesticides —has until recently been an extremely difficult, if not impossible, challenge. But now there is a machine that is unmatched in performing this task.

Which machine are we talking about? The eWeeding Roller powered by Zasso. During the FutureScape event in London, this powerhouse was introduced to the United Kingdom. What makes it different from all other machines we have known so far? Michel and Sonja Wimmers are

happy to explain. Together, they founded the company Wimmersson on 1 February 2023, a business fully dedicated to weed control by means of a new mode of action: electricity.

Conceived in 2019, further developed in 2023, ready for today

Although the company itself is still young, Michel Wimmers’ knowledge and expertise go back much further. The eWeeding concept emerged in 2019 after years of preparatory work under his leadership, as an innovation project of Bayer CropScience’s Environmental Science division in the Benelux. In early

2023, the project was transferred to Wimmersson to further develop eWeeding.

Wimmers explains: “At that time, I had already been working at Bayer for about twenty years. From a commercial perspective, it became less attractive for them to continue the project. While there was interest in the Benelux, interest in other major European countries was limited, and outside Europe there was virtually none. Legislation plays a major role in this. The Netherlands is quite strict and allows only a few exceptions to the ban on pesticide use outside agriculture—namely

for railways and the petrochemical industry. In municipal use, pesticide applications are no longer permitted. In many other countries, legislation is more lenient, reducing the urgency to look for alternatives to chemicals. However the perception of our society towards pesticides is very comparable.”

Alternative methods only work at the surface

“With the Dutch ban on chemicals outside agriculture, the market changed completely and the use of herbicides disappeared. The various techniques, like burning, brushing, hot water or steam, that replaced them only have a surface effect, are very labour-intensive and are still environmentally burdensome.”

“When we look at existing methods such as brushing, burning and hot water, the question remains how effective they really are. Where is the evidence? Moreover, the impact on soil life and biodiversity has not been investigated. In my view, these are all essential aspects when introducing a new product to the market.”

Wimmers explains that development is not only to produce a product, but also to tests their effectiveness—not just their intended effect, but also their impact on surrounding flora and fauna, as well as on the people applying them as well as by-standers.

Root-level action

According to Wimmers, nothing with

true root-level action had previously been brought to market. “And that is exactly what comes closest to the effect of traditional chemical solutions. Electricity emerged as the most powerful method. However, there are several factors to consider, such as underground cabling and the safety of by-standers and operators. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king—but that also means we miss a great deal of knowledge and expertise. Ultimately, success is determined by the person who operates the machine: they have all the tools to achieve a good result.”

That is why training and guidance are essential—creating awareness that this involves a new mode of action, so users understand what to expect and what risks come with working at high voltages. “That will determine the success of the product. And during the guidance we provide, we ourselves also gain new insights to further develop the machine.”

Drawing board versus practice

Wimmersson operates with two revenue models. On the one hand, the company focuses on the control of invasive species; on the other, on treating paved surfaces to combat unwanted weeds. For years, a prototype of the eWeeding Roller was used to gain experience and finetune the machine.

For example, the original design had a complex starting procedure and no traction. The starting procedure

has been simplified to make it easy for operators. The driving assistance is now available as option allows the machine’s speed to be precisely controlled and maximizes the efficacy.

To identify these kinds of improvements, Wimmersson allowed customers to test the machine. “This not only yielded valuable insights, but also led to sustainable customer relationships. We now have a core group of around fifty customers who have gained experience with the machine and are in possession of an eWeeding Roller since 2025”.

No impact on soil life whatsoever

Wimmersson has also commissioned extensive research into the impact of the method on soil life. This is a topic that is increasingly discussed, especially in the control of invasive species. What does it do to soil organisms and surrounding vegetation? While everything the blade of the eWeeding Roller passes over is affected, there is absolutely no impact on soil life, insects or other organisms.

Because the eWeeding Roller heats plant cells using electricity, the weeds die off completely, including the roots. And even after the weeds are gone, the soil remains alive and healthy. The high voltage travels through the roots without affecting underground organisms.

Existing complaints are a thing of the past

In addition, the eWeeding Roller emits no CO2, leaves no harmful residues and therefore does not harm nature. When you use a brushing machine, small stones are easily flung around, which can scratch cars, for example. Moreover, the machine is fully electric—so no roaring engine causing disturbance early in the morning or among shoppers. With this method, all of those complaints are a thing of the past.

WHAT THE MODERN GARDEN LOOKS LIKE TODAY, ACCORDING TO AWARD-WINNING DESIGNERS

DESIGN IDEAS

FROM

THE WINNERS OF THE SOCIETY OF GARDEN AND LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS (SGLD) AWARDS .... FOR EVERY SIZE OF GARDEN

Spanning intimate urban gardens and ambitious public spaces, the 2026 SGLD Award winners offer a snapshot of how garden design is evolving. The award-winning projects highlight the new thinking shaping outdoor spaces today — and provide clear inspiration for homeowners looking to create gardens that are stylish, practical and ready for the challenges ahead.

1. Thermal Design: Gardens That Feels Fresh Even in Heat

Why it’s new: Designers are moving beyond bold, showy colours and using restrained greens, soft neutrals, and natural materials to make gardens feel visually and physically cooler—an aesthetic response to hotter summers and climate change. Many winning gardens played with temperature perception — cool stone,

warm timber, calming green planting combinations or silvery foliage—to create spaces that feel refreshing and calm.

Designer tip: Dial back strong colours and focus on foliage, texture, and pale materials. Pair light-coloured stone or paving with soft, silvery plants to make small patios and terraces feel cooler and more inviting.

2. Immersive Thresholds

Why it’s new: The boundary between patio and garden is disappearing. Designers are letting plants spill across steps, terraces, and walls so that entering the garden feels like stepping into greenery rather than onto hard paving. Draping climbers, grasses, and shrubs over edges softens hardscape and visually enlarges the space.

Designer tip: Plant right up to paths, doors, and steps—just a narrow strip of greenery or overhanging plants can transform how your garden feels from inside the house.

3. Beyond Paving: Hardscapes that Beautify and Protect

Why it’s new: Hard landscaping is no longer just a backdrop. Designers are combining aesthetics with climate-smart functionality, using permeable paving, floating terraces, sand-swept joints, and engineered sub-bases to reduce flooding, protect roots, and enhance resilience. These gardens show that carefully detailed hardscape can blend seamlessly with planting, creating spaces that are both visually stunning and environmentally responsible.

Designer tips:

Let water drain naturally: Opt for permeable paving, gravel paths, or sand-swept joints to reduce puddles and protect plant roots.

Mix materials for impact: Combine stone, timber, or gravel with lush planting to create texture, depth, and a garden that’s visually interesting year-round.

Think long-term: Choose durable, low-maintenance materials that complement greenery while standing up to weather and wear.

lines, and create layered “rooms” that unfold as you walk, without sacrificing openness or light. This approach gives each area—dining, relaxing, play, or entertaining—its own sense of purpose and privacy while keeping the space fluid and inviting, ideal for small or challenging urban sites.

Designer tips:

4. Sustainability

Without Sacrificing Style

Why it’s new: Designers are taking sustainability beyond planting choices, embracing a retainrecycle-reuse approach. Neglected structures, old pavers, and on-site stone are repurposed into features that tell a story, add character, and create visually compelling spaces. These gardens show that eco-friendly design can be both responsible and highly stylish, transforming challenging sites into layered, authentic landscapes.

Reader tips:

Repurpose materials from your own garden—old bricks, stones, or timber can become paths, terraces, or seating.

Combine reclaimed elements with new planting to add texture, history, and visual interest.

Use material variety to define different zones and create a sense of narrative in the garden.

5. Small in Scale, Rich in Detail: Where Craftsmanship Defines Luxury

Why it’s new: Luxury is no longer about large lawns or grand features. Judges consistently praised craftsmanship, material junctions and thoughtful detailing — proving refinement now matters more than scale.

Designer tip: Adopt the ‘less is more’ approach. Invest in fewer, better materials and well-finished details to elevate even the smallest garden.

6. Spacial Zoning and Layered Privacy

Use changes in paving, decking, or gravel to signal different zones. Plant in dense groups or draping arrangements to mask sight lines and guide movement.

Introduce subtle level changes steps, terraces, or raised beds—to create separate areas without closing the garden off.

7. Biophilic Gardens: Nature That Nurtures Wellbeing

Why it’s new:

Designers are redefining garden division, moving away from fences and screens. Instead, they use planting density, level changes, material shifts, and subtle structures to guide movement, mask sight

Why it’s new: Biophilic design is moving beyond interiors into gardens, schools and corporate campuses. Designers are integrating nature-inspired patterns, biodiversity, and lush greenery near buildings to boost mental health, encourage outdoor engagement, and create restorative spaces fostering curiosity, wellbeing, and lasting connections with nature.

NEW ELVEDEN MIX

Wild Thorn Hedge

Elveden Instant Hedge is pleased to announce the creation and planting of our latest hedging mix. Designed with privacy in mind, our home grown, Wild Thorn Hedge has already been attracting attention from garden designers, ecologists, infrastructure project managers and facilities managers who want to attain maximum biodiversity whilst deterring deer and other unwanted visitors.

Wild Thorn Hedging is a mix of seven robust hedging species that are known to provide a whole raft of benefits. Most (but not all) of the species are native to the UK but to optimise the mix for climate change, we’ve added some popular garden favourites such as pyracantha, which fares remarkably well in the UK and provides excellent forage for pollinators and birds.

Wild Thorn Hedge Mix

• Berberis julienae – Berberis (Wintergreen Barberry)

• Crataegus monogyna –Hawthorn

• Ilex aquifolium – Holly

• Prunus spinosa – Blackthorn

• Pyracantha (Orange & Red Firethorn) – Firethorn

• Rhamnus cathartica – Common Buckthorn

• Rosa canina – Dog Rose

As the name suggests, one thing that all of the species in Wild Thorn Hedging have in common, is that they sport a plethora of prickles. Those bristles and barbs act as a highly effective deterrent to make any self-respecting large mammal think twice before trying to breach your boundaries.

Aesthetically, you can be assured of year round feast for the eyes. The species mix in our new Wild Thorn Hedge offers both deciduous and evergreen foliage, along with long lasting floral displays in spring which are followed by colourful berries, hips and haws in autumn time.

This mix will create a superb habitat for nesting creatures such as birds and bumblebees and of course will offer a generous supply of spring nectar for a wide range of pollinators. Even the shortest linear meterage of Wild Thorn Hedging will be used as a safe highway for hedgehogs and other small mammals, whilst keeping livestock and other larger mammals exactly where they are meant to be. When it comes to establishing Wild Thorn Hedging, life couldn’t be easier. As part of the Elveden Instant Hedge range of boundary solutions, it can be delivered and installed at any time of year. Our unique growing and harvesting methods ensure minimal root disturbance – even though these hedges are fully mature.

If you are not yet familiar with the Elveden Instant Hedge concept, please do book an appointment to come and view our nursery.

Following the success of their warm oak colourway, Atkin & Thyme have expanded the collection to include a sophisticated new Birch woodeffect finish. Though it possesses the aesthetic softness of natural timber, the Savannah is engineered from high-grade, durable aluminium. This ensures the structure is not only UV and heat resistant but fully waterproof, capable of withstanding significant snow loads and high winds - essential reliability for the unpredictable UK climate.

The hallmark of the Savannah range is its versatility. The adjustable louvered roof panels allow designers to manipulate the environment, inviting in dappled light or providing complete shelter at a moment’s notice. To further tailor the space, Atkin & Thyme offers three distinct wall options: sleek sliding louvered doors, fixed panels, and texteline blinds with integrated crank handles. These customisable elements allow for precise control over privacy and weather protection, ensuring the final build feels like a true extension of the home.

As evening falls, integrated, remotecontrolled LED lighting transforms the pergola into an atmospheric retreat. Whether sheltering a curated lounge set or a private spa, the result is a beautifully lit ambience that extends the usability of the garden well into the night.

The vision continues beyond the structure itself. The Savannah ecosystem includes a modular

outdoor kitchen system, offering 4 or 6-burner configurations alongside bespoke storage cabinetry, and a refined furniture collection. With a signature slatted finish, these pieces harmonise with both classical and contemporary schemes.

To support your next project, the Atkin & Thyme design team is available to guide you through the specification process, ensuring every technical requirement is met. Professionals can configure their vision directly online or collaborate with the team to create a bespoke outdoor sanctuary that truly defines luxury living.

DURAPOST VISTA ®:

MODERN COMPOSITE FENCING FOR CONTEMPORARY OUTDOOR DESIGN

As outdoor environments increasingly function as purposeful extensions of modern living and working spaces, architects and landscape architects are placing greater emphasis on materials that combine refined aesthetics with reliable long-term performance. DuraPost VISTA® perfectly aligns with this design shift. Its contemporary profile, durable composite construction, and efficient installation make it an appealing option for specifiers seeking high-quality, future-ready boundary solutions.

Designed for Modern Architecture

Versatility is fundamental in contemporary landscape architecture, and VISTA® has

been engineered to offer exactly that. Its clean lines and premium finish integrate naturally with a wide spectrum of architectural styles—from minimalist residential schemes to detailed landscape refurbishments. Available in six colourways, the system enables designers to coordinate or contrast tones across landscape elements. These UV-stabilised boards ensure colour consistency over time, delivering either natural or bold modern expressions without fading or the need for ongoing treatment.

Built for Contemporary Lifestyles

Clients today expect materials that pair visual clarity with practical longevity. Manufactured from high-quality wood-plastic

composite (WPC), VISTA® achieves a timber-inspired look without the associated maintenance. It will not rot, splinter, or require staining— supporting both homeowners and commercial clients seeking low-maintenance, high-performance solutions. Backed by an up to 15-year guarantee, the system allows architects and specifiers to design fencing boundaries with confidence.

Versatility at the Core VISTA®’s adaptability is one of its key design strengths. Panels can be used with DuraPost® steel posts, valued for their structural integrity and weather resistance, or integrated into existing concrete posts during retrofits. This flexibility supports a wide range of applications, from

new developments and garden reconfigurations to landscape improvement projects. As a modular system, VISTA® makes making installation efficient for contractors while remaining manageable for smaller-scale or self-build projects

Alongside functionality, VISTA® enhances the overall visual experience of a space. Its crisp edges and contemporary texture help transform fencing from a purely functional element into a coherent part of the wider landscape composition. Whether used for perimeter fencing, garden zoning, screening around outdoor entertainment spaces, or integrated with existing posts, VISTA® brings cohesion and visual balance to modern landscaping.

Reflecting today’s expectations for responsible material choice, VISTA® uses FSC certified timber within the composition of its boards, ensuring the system supports recognised sustainable forestry practices. This certified content strengthens its responsible sourcing credentials and gives designers transparent, verifiable sustainability assurances— an increasingly important requirement for clients and modern environmental specifications.

These approaches are illustrated in a recent project in the west of Scotland, where a homeowner commissioned one of our trained installers to help deliver a complete garden transformation that balanced aesthetics, functionality and long term performance. With a wide choice of VISTA® colourways available, the homeowner was able to match the fencing seamlessly to the black window frames of the property, selecting black DuraPost® Classic posts paired with Slate VISTA® panels for a unified, contemporary look.

Beyond design, the system needed to support the demands of busy family and working life. As a business owner operating from a garage on the property, the

client required a versatile solution that could provide a full height perimeter fence while also creating shorter dividing sections to define the driveway without compromising visual cohesion. Safety and low maintenance were also essential considerations for a family with young children, with composite materials offering a secure, splinter free surface. Following a previous poor experience with rotting timber posts, the homeowner also valued the reassurance of the DuraPost® guarantee.

Ultimately, the decision to choose DuraPost VISTA® was driven by its ability to combine tailored design options with versatility, low upkeep and long term reliability— all key to supporting the lifestyle and expectations of the modern household.

In a sector where design quality, durability, and material performance increasingly shape specification decisions, DuraPost VISTA® provides a well-rounded solution. Its versatility, minimal maintenance requirements, long service life, and installation efficiency make it suitable for domestic gardens, high-end

residential landscaping, and contemporary commercial projects. For architects and landscape architects seeking materials that support both aesthetic intent and functional resilience, VISTA® offers a contemporary fencing solution that integrates effortlessly into a range of design approaches. Its seamless alignment of functional reliability and modern design expression ensures the boundary elements contributes positively to the overall landscape composition without competing with surrounding elements.

SURVEY REVEALS GARDEN BUILDINGS ARE MORE THAN JUST SHEDS

THEY’RE PART OF EVERYDAY HOME LIFE

A new customer survey by Crane Garden Buildings has revealed just how integral garden buildings have become to modern living. Of the 320 Crane customers who responded, an impressive 83 per cent said they use their garden building every single week, all year round.

The results highlight how these spaces, once seen as occasional retreats or storage solutions, are now cherished as a valuable and well-used extension of the home. Whether as a home office, fitness studio, craft workshop, or simply a quiet place to escape and recharge, garden buildings are being woven into daily routines across the country.

The survey reflects a broader lifestyle shift towards making the most of our homes and gardens throughout the year. It also reinforces Crane’s long-held belief that a well-designed, high-quality garden building is not a seasonal indulgence but an enduring, versatile part of family life.

Russell Atkinson, CEO of Crane Garden Buildings, said: “These findings show just how loved and well-used our buildings are. When 83 per cent of customers are stepping into their garden building every single week, in every season, it underlines their value as a true extension of the home. They’re places where people work, create, relax and spend time with family, spaces that make a genuine

difference to their quality of life. At Crane, we’re proud to design and build buildings that not only look beautiful in the garden but also become a meaningful part of our customers’ everyday lives.”

Founded more than 50 years ago and still proudly rooted in Norfolk, Crane Garden Buildings handcrafts every building at its Narford headquarters. Today, with show sites nationwide, the company is recognised as one of the UK’s leading names in premium garden rooms, sheds and summerhouses, creating spaces designed to last and to be enjoyed for generations.

DESIGNING RESILIENT LANDSCAPES: 40 YEARS OF CEDAR NURSERY

As Cedar Nursery in Surrey marks 40 years in the trade, its story mirrors the evolution of landscape and urban design itself. Founded in 1986 by Tim and Kate Sharples, Cedar began as a destination for exceptional plants and trees. Four decades on, that commitment to quality remains, but the scope has expanded to meet the increasingly complex demands of contemporary landscapes.

Today’s projects call for more than planting schemes alone. Designers and landscapers are looking for solutions that perform as well as they look. Cedar

Nursery has responded by becoming a comprehensive supply partner: from specimen plants and climate-resilient trees to bespoke planters, gravel stabilisation systems and high-end garden furniture.

Standout developments include the bespoke planter showroom, offering designers control over form, scale and colour, and Kitchen in the Garden, which supplies commercial-grade outdoor kitchens for residential and hospitality projects. Both respond to the same shift in client expectations: outdoor spaces

that work as hard as the interiors they extend.

Climate change has also reshaped planting choices. Cedar’s team now regularly advises on species suited to flooding, drought and rising temperatures. Trees such as olive and persimmon - once rare in UK schemesare now increasingly specified as part of more resilient, future-focused designs.

Practical innovation sits alongside horticultural expertise. Cedar’s exclusive StablePave gravel stabilisation panels offer durable, weed-suppressing solutions for driveways, pathways and car parksmeeting both aesthetic and performance requirements.

Trends will continue to shift, but Cedar Nursery’s core strength endures: specialist knowledge, thoughtful advice and service built on long-term relationships. After 40 years, that expertise is more relevant than ever.

Why Choose Us?

Established in 1986 in Cobham, Surrey, Cedar Nursery is a family-run Plant & Outdoor Living Centre. We supply trade & retail customers with a carefully curated range of quality garden plants, bespoke planters and professional landscaping products.

SPACE SAVING PLEACHED TREES

Pleached trees are a smart solution when your client needs privacy alongside fences or boundaries without losing precious lawn or outdoor space. These narrow elegant trees typically have a clear stem of around 1.8–2m before the canopy begins, with the foliage trained into a slim square or rectangular frame.

Whether you are creating a contemporary linear screen or a formal garden feature, pleached trees add architectural interest. Their straight trunks and neat, tidy canopies create a clean, refined aesthetic that enhances particularly urban garden design.

We always have a range of quality trees for decorative or screening purposes in stock in our Buckinghamshire nursery. These include a comprehensive range of pleached trees, species include:

• Elaeagnus ebbingei or Elaeagnus × submacrophylla (Oleaster)

• Ilex aquifolium ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ (Holly ‘Nellie R. Stevens’)

• Ligustrum japonicum (Japanese Privet)

• Liquidambar styraciflua (American Sweetgum)

• Magnolia grandiflora ‘Gallisoniensis’

• Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’

• Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’ (Cherry Laural Novita)

• Viburnum tinus lucidum (French Laurustinus)

You can view our full tree availability lists on our website. We offer trade prices for bulk orders, please enquire for more details.

Visit The Nursery

We would be delighted to show you, with or without your client, around our Tree and Hedge nursery in Iver, Buckinghamshire.

Located near to the M4, M25 and M40 junctions, about 6 miles from Heathrow Airport, we are just 15 miles from Central London and

Please phone us first on 01753 652022 to book a nursery visit and we will ensure we have an expert on hand to show you around.

We look forward to meeting you and helping you with your enquiry.

Privacy in gardens can be created using trees to hide or screen out an undesirable view. Trees grown for this purpose often have a clear stem up to fence panel height around 1.8-2m with a full bushy canopy above, forming a good screen above the fence line. This type of screening is particularly useful if the garden is overlooked by neighbouring properties or to retain lower-level exposure to an attractive wall or area.

Semi-mature trees can be planted to achieve effective screening from the offset with evergreens being preferred for this purpose as they screen throughout the year. However, a planting scheme that includes deciduous trees can provide rich contrast and seasonal interest.

Screening trees

Practicality Brown can supply a range of top quality trees for screening, which are particularly useful for creating privacy. This is our selection of the best screening trees, and all are in stock at our nursery in Iver, Bucks:

• Eriobotrya japonica

• Ilex aquifolium Nellie R Stevens

• Ilex castaneifolia

• Ligustrum japonicum

• Magnolia grandiflora

• Osmanthus aquifolium

• Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin’

• Pinus nigra

• Prunus laurocerasus ‘Novita’

• Viburnum lucidum

Pleached trees

We also have a range of pleached trees which can be used in the same way; pleached trees can be effective for formal

screening and where space is limited. These are our best trees that are in stock:

• Ilex aquifolium Nellie R Stevens

• Ligustrum japonicum

• Magnolia grandiflora

• Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin’

WYKEHAM MATURE PLANTS

Shrubs are the backbone of mixed plantings, providing scale, structure and a sense of permanence, while seasonal flowers or autumn foliage bring changing colours and interest. Dense shrub plantings can be used as alternatives to hedging, to define and separate areas, to hide unsightly views or problem areas (as well as being attractive features in their own right of course!), to provide cover for

wildlife, and to provide groundcover to suppress weeds.

Wykeham Mature Plants are experts in supplying mature stock for instant transformations, including a selection of large ornamental shrubs to provide instant maturity to any planting scheme. Supplying the trade with high quality large trees, specimen shrubs,

instant hedging and screening plants for over forty five years, the 150 acre nursery is located in a frost pocket near Scarborough; the Yorkshire-grown stock is guaranteed to be hardy and, as a nursery that has achieved the prestigious Plant Healthy certification, you can rest assured that it is free from imported pests and diseases.

Advisory and quality planting services are available to both private and commercial clients, to ensure that the plants you purchase have the best possible start. The experienced sales staff are happy to advise you of the ideal plants to thrive in the conditions on your site.

SOMERSET GRILLS: THE FEATURE GRILL FOR OUTDOOR KITCHEN PROJECTS

There is nothing like the Theatre of cooking over flames and embers, and the amazing flavours that you can create. That’s what The Somerset Grill Company are all about –making it easy to cook with fire, using great looking Grills to create amazing outdoor feasts for family and friends.

Specifying a Somerset Grill as the centrepiece of larger outdoor kitchen designs really offers the complete cooking solution. With 12 different cooking zones, it replaces gas barbecue, pizza oven and slow cooker all in one quality British made Grill.

Available in two sizes – Asado for 6-10 people, or larger Grande, with twin cooking decks and up to 20 people. These both come in 3 finishes – gunmetal oiled mild steel, pre-rusted CorTen and new for 2026, full Stainless steel.

The main benefits the Grills provide over other wood-fired options are:

• Easy temperature control through winding a handle up and down

• Continuous ember supply for

longer cooks through the inbuilt ember maker at the rear

• Easy cleaning and de-ashing via full width front door

These are all designed to be built into all sorts of outdoor kitchen projects – the case studies that follow can provide inspiration. We work with garden designers, outdoor kitchen builders and landscape architects to provide an Outdoor Kitchen centrepiece that will Wow your clients.

We can provide SketchUp files for all Grills, so you can incorporate them into designs and visuals. Delivery to site is easy too - Grills are delivered (usually from stock) fully assembled on pallets, on a specific day for the project.

Let’s look at a few case studies:

Outdoor canopy Kitchen - Guy Galpin Projects

This project used our best-selling Gunmetal Asado as the centrepiece for a unique curved canopy and outdoor kitchen. Positioning the Grill against the back wall and including a chimney creates a focal point, and the practical layout around it.

Stunning Garden Room Kitchen

This superb outdoor kitchen Garden Room elevates al fresco cooking and dining to new heights. Incorporating the larger Grande in Gunmetal, the twin grill surfaces enable two different temperature regimes at once, and cooking capacity for up to 20 guests in real style.

Beautiful Garden setting –Formosa Landscapes

A simple build in of our Grande Gunmetal grill into a completely outdoor kitchen in a tranquil new garden project. Easy access for adding logs to keep the embers flowing, and simple heat control by turning the twin axles to move the cooking grills up and down – which ranges from 40-400C, depending on height and ember depth.

Practical considerations:

Using live fire does present some different risks and challenges, but by following these key guidelines, they are suitable for most settings:

• Take care with thatch nearby – sparks can be a risk when the embers burn down.

• Avoid wooden backwalls – use a metal sheet or tile wall behind

• Don’t use plastic canopies or wooden roofs lower than 1.5M above the cooking surface

• In very enclosed areas or garden rooms, consider powered extraction

• Suitable for use in all DEFRA Clean air zones, except when a chimney is added!

Please feel free to book a visit to our new showroom or a video call online via our website www.somersetgrill.com, or email Ben at hello@somersetrgrill.com, or follow us on Instagram for more inspirational ideas.

WHY A USED OUTDOOR KITCHEN IS THE SMART UPGRADE FOR YOUR GARDEN

For many homeowners, their outdoor spaces have become just as important as indoor ones. With pools and hot tubs growing in popularity, homeowners are looking for more functional outdoor spaces, and the most natural next step is a space that combines both lifestyle and valuean outdoor kitchen.

Outdoor kitchens are growing in popularity, trending on social media, and on Google searches, fueled by hotter summers, we are entertaining more and more in our gardens during the summer months. An outdoor kitchen can really add to the wow factor of a pool area, enhancing the entertaining element of a garden and delivering a profitable return when you come to sell.

Choosing a used or ex-display outdoor kitchen offers a savvy,

sustainable solution that fits your budget, while adding value to your property without breaking the bank.

The rise of outdoor living

The pandemic shifted how homeowners think about their spaces. Investment in gardens and exterior areas has increased dramatically, with a focus on creating seamless indoor-outdoor flow. We’ve seen this with the rise of hot tubs, swimming pools, pergolas and firepits, so it’s no surprise that there’s been an increase in outdoor kitchens, with the potential to pull these elements together.

On the functional side, an outdoor prep and cooking area maximises the outdoor area’s potential. Whether you’re BBQing, mixing drinks, or setting out food, everything you need is within reach, making

the space far more practical and enjoyable to use. It also makes hosting easier; instead of constantly running between the kitchen and the garden, you remain part of the party, with a set-up designed for convenience. This helps maximise the pool area’s potential, turning it into a useful hub for relaxation, entertaining, and outdoor living.

On the visual side, it adds a stunning, eye-catching area that elevates your outdoor space. Whether you go for a sleek, modern stainless steel look or something a bit more rustic, an outdoor kitchen adds both personality and structure. It’s the sort of feature that not only impresses your guests but also encourages you to spend more time outside, enjoying a garden that looks and feels that little bit more luxurious.

Why choose a used outdoor kitchen?

A pre-owned kitchen is one of the smartest ways to upgrade your garden without the high price tag of a brand-new outdoor kitchen. Buying new can be costly, especially when you start adding built-in BBQs, fridges, storage and stone worktops. By choosing a used kitchen, you can often get higher-quality units and materials for a fraction of the cost.

Many pre-owned kitchens are highend brands with solid construction and long-lasting finishes, meaning you get quality that lasts. This is especially helpful outdoors, where you need strong, reliable materials that can handle changes in weather. It’s also a far more sustainable choice. Buying used cabinetry and worktops reduces waste and saves them from landfill. For homeowners who want to improve their pool area while being kinder to the planet, it’s a choice that works on every level.

Features that make an outdoor kitchen withstand British weather

It is important to invest in a true “outdoor kitchen” which is built to withstand our unpredictable climate. These often feature durable materials like stone, quartz or steel. that hold up against the elements while maintaining their appeal, many ex-display outdoor kitchens use durable materials and also come with handy weatherproofing extras such as protective coatings, outdoor-rated hinges, and rustresistant fittings.

This means you can get a trusted setup that lasts longer outdoors but also keeps its style and quality season after season, even through wet winters and unpredictable British weather.

The finishing touch to your outdoor space

In recent years, kitchen entertaining in general has surged in popularity,

with outdoor entertaining on the rise, too. In the summer months, more homeowners choose to host gatherings and celebrations in their gardens rather than indoors. As patios, decks, and pool areas become extensions of the home, having a dedicated outdoor kitchen enhances both convenience and experience. Guests naturally gravitate toward the poolside, so upgrading the space with functional cooking and serving areas makes hosting smoother and far more enjoyable.

A used outdoor kitchen is a smart, stylish and cost-effective way to upgrade your pool area. It boosts practicality, improves hosting, and adds genuine visual appeal to your garden, all while keeping your budget under control. By choosing pre-owned, you also make a more sustainable choice that reduces waste and offers great value for money.

THE ULTIMATE WAY TO TURN A GARDEN INTO A DESTINATION

KÖNIGOUTDOOR IS A SPECIALIST DESIGNER AND MANUFACTURER OF PREMIUM OUTDOOR KITCHENS WHICH SETS A NEW BENCHMARK IN THE INDUSTRY

KönigOutdoor is a specialist designer and manufacturer of premium outdoor kitchens which sets a new benchmark in the industry. Each kitchen is fully bespoke and designed to match the aesthetics and functionality of a high-end indoor kitchen. Designs include features such as drawers, pull-out bins and integrated appliances. The designs feature solid ceramic or sintered stone for the external finishes, including worktops, door fronts, and cladding, to combine elegance with resilience. The internal carcasses are made with a waterproof composite board that can withstand damp ingress for up to 50 years above ground.

Why has the demand for outdoor kitchens grown over the past few years?

There has been a shift in how people think about their homes; especially since the pandemic, homeowners have come to appreciate the value of private outdoor space, and outdoor kitchens have become the ultimate way to turn a garden into a destination.

Outdoor cooking is fashionable the world over and many outdoor appliances go beyond what’s possible indoors. Think wood-fired pizza ovens, rotisseries, smokers... the type of appliances that turns outdoor cooking into an experience.

Pictured is the stunning KönigOutdoor kitchen with Dekton surfaces, ample seating area and swim up pool

How does incorporating a highend outdoor kitchen add value to a landscape design?

With the right shelter, lighting and heating, an outdoor kitchen in the UK isn’t just for summer; it’s a yearround retreat. It instantly expands living space, adding real value to a home while giving a reason to step outside. Outdoor kitchens have become a true lifestyle statement, and landscape designers have more scope than ever.

KönigOutdoor kitchens are made in Britain. What does this mean for the product in terms of quality control, supply chain stability, and customer trust?

One of the biggest benefits of having an outdoor kitchen made locally is total quality control. Being made in the UK means fast delivery, smooth timelines; it builds trust, supports local industry and makes aftercare, like servicing or custom upgrades, simple and stress-free.

Outdoor kitchens face varying environmental conditions. What

materials and finishes are used to ensure long-term durability?

Ceramic and sintered stone are the best materials for outdoor worktops. Now KönigOutdoor is using them for full kitchen structures. The large, lightweight slabs, formed under extreme heat and pressure, allow for the crafting of solid stone fronts that outperform traditional materials which can often fade, rot, scratch, warp or require constant upkeep.

What is special about the product’s performance in terms of resistance to weather, wear, and seasonal temperature changes?

Ceramic and sintered stone are the materials of choice for KönigOutdoor kitchens, offering exceptional durability and performance in all seasons. Engineered to withstand the challenges of the British climate, these surfaces are UV, heat, and frost resistant - ensuring they retain their appearance and structural integrity year-round. Their near-zero porosity makes them highly resistant to

stains and bacteria, providing a hygienic, low-maintenance surface ideal for food preparation and service.

Available in a wide range of finishes, including realistic concrete, wood, and marble effects, these materials offer both aesthetic versatility and long-term reliability. Whether the design leans contemporary or classic, ceramic and sintered stone provide a refined, practical solution that enhances the beauty and functionality of any outdoor living space.

Are there any trends in outdoor living that landscape designers should be aware of for upcoming developments?

Outdoor living is a defining feature of luxury home design; many developers create a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces by using large glass panels or bi-fold doors. In terms of design, warm tones and natural neutrals like sandy beiges and creamy tones are popular as are patterns with organic swirls and soft veining while finishes are going tactile, with matte and leathered textures adding a touch of understated luxury.

Are there any common challenges or mistakes when planning an outdoor kitchen?

Planning to incorporate an outdoor kitchen at an early stage will make things run more smoothly. For installation, a solid and relatively level surface with minimum falls is required and mains services, such as electricity, water or gas, will need to be in place before the kitchen is installed.

Positioning is important as placing the kitchen in an area with too much sun, wind or poor proximity to the house can affect usability and comfort. For many outdoor cooking appliances, adequate ventilation and safety clearances are required while a permanent shelter such as a pergola or canopy, will give added protection to the appliances and cabinetry.

A great way to make outdoor areas feel like a natural extension of the home is by using similar materials, finishes and layouts. Ceramic or sintered stone is available in a variety of finishes and is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

For those seeking a streamlined solution, the Köncept range combines all the benefits of a

KönigOutdoor kitchen in a sleek set design. The 2750 x 970mm run features all the essentials including storage, cooking appliance and drinks fridge, to deliver value, style and sophistication.

HOW TO CREATE THE ULTIMATE INDOOROUTDOOR FLOW

Indoor-outdoor living has become one of the most popular features in modern renovations, with no sign of slowing down. Whether you want a full open plan kitchen which extends to a fully equipped cover area with outdoor dining and highend outdoor cooking facilities, or you go for something more simple like bi-fold doors onto a patio to enjoy your morning coffee, the goal is the same: blurring the boundaries between inside and out to create a home that feels bigger, brighter and effortlessly relaxed. Get it right, and this approach transforms everyday living into something special.

Plan around your lifestyle

Before you knock down walls or order bi-folds, the most important question is how you realistically want to use the space day to day,

and what benefits you can bring to your kitchen. Do you want your kitchen to feel less dark and cramped, with open space and doors that flood the room with natural light? Or are you after a space that works equally for quiet weekday breakfasts as it does for hosting friends at the weekend?

It’s easy to get carried away by the Instagram version of indoor-outdoor living, but the best designs come from thinking about everyday reality: family meals, working from home, relaxed evenings, not just the handful of sunny weekends we get each year. When a kitchen is designed around how you actually live rather than just thinking about the look and style, the flow between inside and out becomes natural and useful all year round.

If there’s one element that defines indoor-outdoor flow, it’s the doors. They set the tone both visually and practically. Bi-fold doors are probably the most popular choice for achieving the indoor-outdoor look, folding back completely to merge your garden with the living area. Sliding doors are another popular choice, and generally more affordable than bi-fold, while still looking sleek and modern.

Crittal-style doors are another option, perfect if you want to add a little character. Their slim metal frames create an appealing, simple grid that lets in plenty of light, while subtly dividing the space without closing it off. Whichever style you choose, it’s worth paying attention to the details, low thresholds, and

flush flooring are what make the transition from inside to outside truly seamless, rather than just visually appealing.

The kitchen “bridge”

The kitchen naturally becomes the link between inside and out, so it needs to work a little harder than the rest of the house. It’s not about repositioning your entire layout for the sake of a few sunny days - it’s about small, practical choices that make the connection feel natural. Think about where you position smaller elements like a drinks fridge, coffee station or breakfast prep bar, so they’re accessible from both sides when the doors are open. Materials matter too, choosing flooring and surfaces that our weather resistant and can handle foot traffic means the space stays functional throughout. When your kitchen is designed to genuinely connect both zones, the transition between inside and out is effortless.

Don’t forget the ceiling and lighting

We spend a lot of time thinking about floors and doors, but ceilings and lighting are what really make the space feel pulled together once the sun goes down. Simple canopies or pergolas help blur the boundary between inside and out, especially when they’re visually connected to the house. Lighting matters just

as much. Warm, soft lighting both indoors and in the garden prevents the outside from becoming too dark and unwelcoming at night. A few well-placed wall or ground lights can make the garden feel like a natural extension of the room, not something you shut off after dark.

Design for the British climate! Let’s be realistic, indoor-outdoor living in the UK needs a little more planning and consideration than it might do somewhere else, but it doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from it in the colder seasons too. Shelter is key, whether that’s a

canopy, covered seating area or even just somewhere dry to stand with a drink without getting soaked. Good drainage and outdoor heating will extend the usability of your space, even for mild winter days. Choosing finishes that age well and can withstand a bit of rain is always worth it, too. Get those things right, and your indoor-outdoor space becomes genuinely useful all year round, not just a fair-weather luxury. A home with great indoor-outdoor design isn’t just on trend. It gives you a home that’s functional, adaptable and suited to how you actually live, whatever the weather.

TREATING SLIPPERY SURFACES WITH ECOPROTEC BLACK SPOT & ALGAE REMOVER

A build-up of algae on paths, steps, driveways and patios creates a slippery residue and a hazard underfoot. Algae tends to flourish in damp, shady and humid areas and, in the UK, build-up is especially common in the winter. ECOPROTEC provides the solution with Black Spot & Algae Remover – an acidfree treatment that safely restores safety and appearance to all types of pavers, including acid-sensitive natural stone, concrete, brick and porcelain. The treatment is easy to apply and gives results in as little as two hours.

Different types of algae

Often forming a dark green or black jelly-like film, slippery algae is generally caused by a cyanobacteria called Nostoc. Black spot – a dustlike lichen that originates from plants and trees – can also form a slippery

residue; it takes about 2-3 years to become established, sending tendrils or ‘hyphae’ down into any cracks or porosity, searching for nutrients. Other forms of algae, like moss, liverwort and lichen tend not to be such a hazard, although widespread growth might not be welcome from an aesthetic point-of-view.

Removing slippery residue

ECOPROTEC Black Spot & Algae

Remover removes all types of algae, along with dirt and other residue. It is applied neat to swept pavers using a watering can or light pressure garden sprayer, and left to act for up to 4 hours. The formula breaks down residue and removes stains. Most stains are removed within hours of application. Exposure to the air for four hours or longer ensures that the potency of the product has diminished before hosing surfaces down with clean water. This helps to ensure that the diluted wash-off is as harmless as possible to plants and lawns. The remover can be used on dry and slightly damp surfaces and should be applied during a morning or afternoon of fair weather.

A pressure washer shouldn’t be used to remove algae and residue, as excessive water will encourage further growth, damage pavers and any sealer applied and it will loosen grout. Water alone also won’t target hyphae or filaments anchored into place below the surface. Acidic solutions should also be avoided, as these will damage acid sensitive material and erode cementitious grout joints.

After treatment, newly cleaned surfaces can be protected with ECOPROTEC Patio Sealer, ECOPROTEC Porcelain Paving Enhancer or ECOPROTEC Pre Grout Protector. These treatments create a barrier that helps to prevent absorption of moisture and organic particles, reducing staining and the spread of algae, mould and black spot.

ECOPROTEC INTRODUCES PFAS-FREE BLACK STONE COLOUR RESTORER

ECOPROTEC has introduced a new PFAS-free formulated Black Stone Colour Restorer. Developed to restore and protect faded outdoor pavers, Black Stone Colour Restorer now joins ECOPROTEC’s Porcelain Paving Enhancer, which also features a formulation that is free from forever chemicals.

Developed for limestone, marble, slate, concrete and artificial stone surfaces, Black Stone Colour Restorer is a waterbased treatment that contains a permanent colour intensifying pigment. It is applied in multiple coats until the desired colour effect is achieved – from dark grey to ebony – to restore appearance to pavers faded by UV rays, humidity and rainwater, and to protect them from the elements going forward. To maintain a very dark, pristine finish, annual treatment with Black Stone Colour Restorer is recommended, although a treated stone will maintain a far darker aesthetic than an untreated stone for around 4-5 years.

TEXTURE, TONE AND TIMELESS APPEAL

Fast becoming a firm favourite among our customers, Sinai Pearl Limestone is a premium paving solution that effortlessly bridges classic character and contemporary design. Combining natural beauty with dependable performance, it is a considered choice for projects where both aesthetics and longevity matter.

Its soft cream base, enriched with muted beige tones, creates a warm and inviting palette suited to both exterior and interior spaces. Whether specified for expansive patios, landscaped courtyards, paths, or internal areas, this versatile limestone delivers a refined yet enduring finish that complements a wide variety of architectural styles and material palettes.

What sets Sinai Pearl apart is its carefully controlled acid-wash treatment. This process enhances the stone’s inherent beauty, drawing out delicate veining and subtle fossil markings that speak to its natural origins.

Launched last spring – and also a waterbased treatment - ECOPROTEC Porcelain Paving Enhancer is a self-shine solution that gives tiles a ‘just washed look’. It also provides practical benefits, being highly resistant to foot traffic, general wear and stains, and promotes easier maintenance. Like Black Stone Colour Restorer, the treatment is UV-resistant and, whilst glossy in nature, causes minimal change to a tile’s slip resistance properties.

All ECOPROTEC floor finishes are manufactured in the UK and are offered alongside a comprehensive range of maintenance products developed for the contractor and landscaper. ECOPROTEC is currently working towards a complete range of PFAS-free sealers that contain no perfluoroalkyl/polyfluoroalkyl substances, with reformulations scheduled for introduction in late 2026.

The result is a surface rich in texture and visual depth, where no two pieces are ever quite the same. Each slab tells its own story, bringing individuality and authenticity to every installation.

The addition of a tumbled edge further elevates its appeal. Through a specialised tumbling process, the stone gains softened edges and a gently timeworn appearance, adding charm and character.

This detailing makes it equally at home in traditional schemes seeking heritage character as in modern projects seeking understated elegance and warmth.

Hard-wearing and practical underfoot, Sinai Pearl Acid and Tumbled Limestone is designed to perform as beautifully as it looks. To fully appreciate its natural variation and tonal movement, we always recommend obtaining a sample before specifying.

The range is available in paving slabs (600x900x20mm), cobbles (50x200x40mm), and drivestone cobble setts (150xFLx40mm). Bullnosed steps (900x450x30mm) complete the Sinai Pearl collection, offering flexibility across a broad range of design applications.

REPOINTING RANDOMSIZED NATURAL STONE PAVING JOINTS (& IN WET WEATHER!)

This prestige holiday home in South Devon, underwent a major refurbishment in 2018, including repointing of the extensive random-sized natural slate paving with cement-based pointing. Unfortunately, this soon cracked and needed more repairs and repointing almost every year. The extent of this cracking and breaking up by mid-summer 2025, was such that the owners felt it was not only becoming unsightly, but also unsafe and a trip hazard for their guests. They asked Gorah Stone, the stone restoration specialist, to try and find a more durable and permanent solution. Additionally, the now urgent repointing works had to be completed with a high risk of wet weather in this exposed coastal location. All these criteria and requirements combined to

present critical issues for selecting the repointing material:

• Firstly, the joints were extremely varied in both width and depth, plus for most of the joint lengths, the joint arrises (edges / sides) were also very varied, and not parallel. Joint dimensions of this nature have a very high risk of failure, especially for cement-based mortars, which is due to the high levels of differential shrinkage stresses created during the cement hydration and hardening process. These lead to shrinkage cracking, as well as stress cracking from thermal movement in service.

• Secondly, the repointing had to be completed quickly for new guests arriving and wet weather conditions were almost inevitable

at some point. However, all traditional and modern cementbased jointing materials must be applied in dry conditions with no residual water in the joints, and then then allowed time to cure and harden before exposure to rainfall, or water run-off, otherwise, shrinkage cracking and premature failure is inevitable.

Gorah Stone contacted NCC Streetscape, leading UK paving jointing specialists, for their expert advice and fortunately, they had an answer. This was to use GftK vdw 850 plus, a unique, 2ndgeneration, epoxy jointing mortar, which is reaction hardening, with no physical shrinkage, meaning no shrinkage cracking and variable joint dimensions are no problem. There are no worries about residual

water in the joints, and no delays due to wet weather, even in the rain, and is the only truly wet-weather paving jointing - effectively the ‘State-of-the-Art’ in paving jointing & repointing technology.

GftK vdw 850 plus is very easy to apply using modern wet-slurry techniques, as it has very high flow properties and self-compacts into the joints, so there is also no additional tooling or finishing required. Unlike cement and other resin-based jointing materials, GftK vdw 850 plus is non-staining, and there is no cement haze & no efflorescence to clean-off, so no waiting to clean, or going back to clean when the surfaces dry out. It is fast curing & hardening, to a tough and durable material that resists heavy pedestrian traffic, as well as frequent vehicular traffic for driveways and public areas. It is fully resistant to de-icing salts

in winter, and very importantly, to frequent cleaning by high pressure jet-washing and even mechanical street cleaning machines.

NCC Streetscape’s Technical Services Manager also arranged to support Gorah Stone on site for this prestige and complex project for their first use of GftK vdw 850 plus. The team were able to quickly and efficiently complete all the necessary preparation and repointing works as scheduled and on time, despite the weather. All these advantages add-up to a huge benefit, allowing owners and their contractors to get paving works completed, get the areas open, and get them back into service, all on time, and as scheduled – and get paid! By using GftK vdw 850 plus, your paving is going to be good for many more years, so it is also the sustainable choice: “Get the Best” with GftK vdw 850plus.

NATURE-BASED URBAN REGENERATION

The revitalization of Praça Mashiach Now has transformed a degraded space in the Northern Zone of São Paulo into an urban green infrastructure, coordinating environmental recovery, active mobility, and social activation in a territory historically dominated by automobiles.

Covering approximately 10,000 m², the square is located between important roads in the region and along the pedestrian route leading to the Portuguesa–Tietê station of the Line 1–Blue metro. For many years, the space remained underutilized, marked by a lack of maintenance, low lighting, and minimal appropriation by the population. In 2024, following an adoption agreement signed between Cidade Center Norte and the Santana/ Tucuruvi Subprefecture, through the municipal program Adopt a Square, the area became part of a broader

urban transformation project linked to the future Bairro Parque Cidade Center Norte.

Inserted in a fragmented urban context, with a strong predominance of automobiles and a scarcity of quality green areas, the intervention faced challenges related to safety, connectivity, and environmental demands associated with climate change. The project is based on the need to rescue the human scale, reconnect pedestrians to the landscape, and restore natural systems in the urban environment, considering the historical proximity of the territory to the Tietê River.

The concept developed by Natureza Urbana is structured in four layers of action — Living Landscape, Network of Elements, Activation of Free Spaces, and Intention — which guide both the design of the square and its integration into the neighborhood’s

system of open spaces. In Praça Mashiach Now, these guidelines materialize through the appreciation of native Atlantic Forest vegetation and the adoption of nature-based solutions. Winding paths and flowerbeds, inspired by the ancient watercourses of the Northern Zone, organize the space and contribute to environmental comfort, biodiversity, and urban drainage.

The design prioritizes pedestrians, with wide sidewalks, visually permeable pathways, and integration among circulation, gathering, and leisure areas. The bike lane crosses the square and connects to the city’s bike path network, strengthening active mobility. Urban furniture — curved benches made of locally molded concrete, tables, bleachers, and resting areas — follows the organic geometry of the pavement, while different shades of concrete help organize flows and gatherings.

The activation of the space was defined through a process of active listening with local residents, the school community, and local agents. The resulting program includes a mini sports court, a skate park, pingpong tables, outdoor gym equipment, with specific areas for the elderly and calisthenics, as well as a playground accessible to different age groups.

The preservation of the plant heritage was one of the project’s pillars: all existing trees were retained, and 78 new native trees were planted, complemented by ground covers and shrubs that enhance plant diversity and attract local fauna. Completed in February 2025, the revitalization returns to the city a safer, more accessible, and environmentally qualified public space, consolidating the square as a leisure area and an urban cooling zone in a historically arid territory.

TREE RELOCATION: CIVIC TREES – WE DON’T JUST MOVE TREES, WE SAFEGUARD THEM

For over 60 years, Civic Trees has been at the forefront of tree relocation across the UK. From introducing Europe’s first Vermeer tree spade to designing the globally renowned Newman Frame, we have consistently led the way in innovation, combining technical expertise with a genuine passion for preserving nature.

Why Relocate a Tree?

Because every tree matters. Relocating a tree isn’t simply moving it—it’s about preserving life. By saving a tree from being cut down, we protect the environment, support sustainable urban growth, and maintain the natural beauty of our surroundings. In a world where sustainability has never been more important, tree relocation is a practical and responsible way to make a lasting difference for future generations. Each tree we relocate continues to provide shade, clean air, and aesthetic value, contributing to healthier, more vibrant communities.

At Civic Trees, every relocation begins with a thorough assessment of the tree’s health, size, and root system. Our team carries out a detailed site-specific risk assessment to ensure the entire operation is carried out safely and efficiently. Using specialist equipment, we carefully lift the tree with minimal disturbance to its roots, transport it securely, and replant it in its new location. From the moment a tree is uprooted to the ongoing care it receives after replanting, our skilled team ensures it adapts successfully and thrives for many years to come.

We believe that a tree is only as healthy as the care it receives. Through meticulous handling, expert planting techniques, and dedicated aftercare, Civic Trees safeguards every tree as if it were our own.

Our unwavering commitment to staff training, safety, and technical excellence means our clients can trust that every relocation is performed to the highest standards.

By choosing to relocate rather than remove trees, we preserve nature’s beauty while supporting sustainable growth in urban and rural communities alike. At Civic Trees, we

take pride in treating every tree as the most prized asset it is, ensuring it continues to enhance landscapes and enrich lives for generations.

THE FORGE, REDCLYFFE ROAD

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT: 192 HOMES COMPRISING

ONE, TWO, THREE AND FOUR BEDROOM APARTMENTS AND TOWNHOUSES

Telford Homes acquired The Forge, in Upton Park, London, in 2014 in a swift unconditional purchase of a site without a planning consent. The site was formerly a bus depot bounded on two sides by existing residential developments.

Radmat was engaged together with RM_A Architects to design a roofing scheme which would meet the strict attenuation and flow rate requirements imposed by Newham Council. The scheme comprises residential apartments, clustered around communal courtyards, accessed off a new public street with substantial public realm enhancement. The new buildings

range from three to five storeys with a 14-storey focal building.

Telford’s chose Radmat for the following reasons:

• Proven track record as a key account partner both manufacturer and Roofing Contractor

• Radmat’s unique key account service which included scheme evaluation by inhouse architects, bespoke CAD drawings, Blue Roof calculations

• Products developed for the application including multiple depth Blue Roof Geocells and BBA certified ProTherm Quantum Vacuum Insulated Panels to achieve the thermal performance in the limited space

• Systems supported by BBA certification specifically certifying the Blue Roof components and a worked up design so that swift NHBC sign off could be achieved.

The development faced many challenges, one of which was meeting the strict run off requirements imposed by the council across a geographically restricted site with reduced height zones. Due to the restrictions of the site and close proximity to

neighbouring properties, below ground attenuation had to be kept to a minimum, leaving the roofs and high level podiums as the key attenuation strategy. Radmat’s Blue Roof System had to be redesigned a number of times to meet the stringent attenuation targets, even utilising the ‘fingers’ of the roof to maximise the available space.

Because the development had to meet high thermal standards and provide as much amenity space to residents as possible while at the same time providing extensive attenuation – the system build ups were considerable and therefore design heights at thresholds and parapets were compromised in some areas.

A series of inverted PermaQuik Hot Melt Blue Roofs were specified to provide a robust waterproofing and were supported by BBA certification for both blue roofing applications and an independent

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

durability statement for the design life of the building. In the most challenging areas Radmat proposed its ProTherm Quantum Vacuum Insulated Panel system which enabled the area to meet the thermal requirement in 80% less space compared to standard insulants, while still meeting the attenuation demands.

Finished with Radmat’s MedO Green Roof systems – both fully vegetated blankets for areas overlooked by apartments and seeded biodiverse roofs surrounding the PV panels – the roofs also incorporated ecological requirements for biodiversity with different growing medium formulations and planting incorporated on different roofs. These habitat roofs have been included to promote environments that will support bees, butterflies and birds.

ORMESBY MEADOW: A WILDFLOWER TRANSFORMATION THAT CONTINUES TO THRIVE

On National Trust land at Ormesby Hall in Middlesbrough, a previously overlooked field has been transformed into a vibrant wildflower meadow, creating a haven for wildlife and a space for visitors to enjoy.

The Background

Ormesby Hall, with its gardens and parkland, sits within a 240-acre green oasis in the heart of industrial Middlesbrough. Once home to the Pennyman family for generations, the estate was gifted to the National Trust in 1961.

Within the wider landscape sat Ormesby Meadow, a field that had become largely unkempt and underused over time. Overgrown and offering limited ecological value, the meadow presented an opportunity for restoration, which led the team at Ormesby Hall to invest in an ambitious two-year project to bring the space back to life.

The Project

As a conservation charity, the National Trust is acutely aware of the national decline in natural habitats. Its approach to land management reflects a clear ambition to restore healthy, beautiful environments that actively support wildlife.

For Ormesby Meadow, the vision was to create a green oasis and a nature-rich haven within an urban setting. The wider plan included the creation of an orchard, a pond and, at its heart, a wildflower meadow designed to significantly enhance biodiversity.

To deliver this element of the project, the team worked with John Chambers Wildflowers. After listening carefully to the brief, which called for a meadow featuring annuals, perennials and a small number of grasses, a bespoke wildflower seed mix was developed specifically for the site.

The mix was designed to include nearly 30 wildflower species to provide a strong visual impact while being robust enough to establish successfully and continue to thrive year on year.

Site preparation and sowing

To give the wildflowers the best possible start, careful site preparation was essential. The existing turf and the top few inches of clay soil were removed to minimise competition from established vegetation. This exposed the poorer underlying soil, creating more favourable conditions for wildflower establishment.

Using a combination of a turfcutting machine and a garden tractor, the Ormesby Hall team prepared four large cultivated areas, ready for sowing. The bespoke seed mix was then evenly sown by hand across the prepared ground, lightly raked in and firmed using rollers attached to a ride-on mower.

Products used

The bespoke mix created for Ormesby Meadow consisted predominantly of perennial wildflowers, complemented by a small proportion of grasses. Annual cornfield species were also included to deliver an immediate burst of colour in the first season.

While many perennial species can take a year or two to flower after germination, the inclusion of annuals helped fill early-flowering gaps, ensuring visual interest from the outset as the meadow established.

The result was a healthy, colourful wildflower meadow designed to attract and support a wide range of insects and other wildlife.

The Outcome

At the time of the project, Nick Fraser, then Senior Gardener at Ormesby Hall, commented, “We had an idea in mind for the wildflower

meadow in this area, and the advice from the John Chambers Wildflowers team really helped make that vision become a reality. The bespoke mix is perfect for what we needed; the meadows have been looking great. We had good late colour from the annuals and some perennials. It looked so good, we waited until October to cut, as there was still colour and lots of insects. In year two, we had waves of different species throughout the year. As well as all the diverse species, the highlights have been the ox-eye daisies and a sea of wild carrot. We are thrilled with the project and look forward to seeing how it all develops over the coming years”.

Several seasons on, Ormesby Meadow continues to mature and evolve, demonstrating the longterm value of thoughtful seed selection, careful preparation and ongoing management. The meadow now delivers consistent colour throughout the growing season and supports a diverse range of wildlife within an urban setting.

Georgia Gilbert, Head of John Chambers Wildflowers, saw the meadow in May 2025 and was impressed by how the project has continued to develop:

“It was genuinely beautiful to see the meadow several years on. There is a great range of species and a real sense of diversity, with abundant flowering. It is clearly a haven for wildlife. The Ormesby Hall team has done an excellent job enhancing the space beyond the meadow, with the addition of the walkway, pond, and educational boards. These features not only support biodiversity but also help visitors better understand and engage with the landscape. It is a fantastic example of how a once underused area can be transformed into a thriving, nature-rich asset.”

SUPPORTING URBAN RESILIENCE THROUGH LIVING ROOFS

As our cities grow denser and summer temperatures climb, the traditional “grey” roof represents a significant environmental challenge. At Lindum Turf, we are committed to finding practical solutions that help mitigate the effects of urban overheating and the growing pressures on drainage systems. While these systems are one part of a wider environmental strategy, our green roofing technology offers a vital tool in creating more sustainable urban environments.

We offer two distinct approaches to support these goals. Our Sedum Mats provide a lightweight, drought tolerant solution for an instant green carpet, while our Wildflower Green Roofs introduce native species for rooftop conditions. Both systems act as a natural thermal barrier, helping to regulate building temperatures and contributing to a reduction in the energy required for seasonal cooling.

When it comes to water management, our systems are designed to assist traditional infrastructure rather than replace. Our green roof packages provide valuable storm water attenuation by absorbing an initial volume of rainfall and slowing the rate at which the remainder reaches the ground. This “sponge effect” helps to reduce peak runoff during heavy showers, providing much needed support to local drainage networks that are often at capacity.

For developers and architects, these systems are also a key component in meeting Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements. Where ground level space is at a premium, our roofs allow for the partial replacement of lost habitats vertically, providing essential forage for pollinators.

Because we grow these mats as fully mature, pre-established systems in our own fields, they provide immediate coverage and ecological

value upon installation. We can provide the complete package, from lightweight, peat-free substrate to specialised drainage. We are proud to help the industry move toward the resilient, biodiverse cities of tomorrow.

Our Species-Rich Turf is a harmonious blend of wildflowers and grasses, the 80/20 mix is carefully cultivated into a plastic-free, moisture-retentive mat, creating an instant biodiverse haven. This unique turf can be maintained like a traditional lawn with regular mowing, or left to grow naturally to encourage the flourishing of diverse plant species.

LITTLE GREEN ROOMS TAKE GARDEN ROOMS TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Garden rooms and garden buildings have come a long way from the humble garden shed. They are big business and range from the still humble shed to full-on garden rooms, garden offices and dedicated garden spaces used for every conceivable occupation and hobby.

Garden rooms offered with a green roof are still relatively rare as live-loading dictates that roofs must be built to take the weight of a green roof from the outset and be capable of handling the weight of waterproofing, filter fleece, root barrier, substrate and planting. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

In Bristol, Little Green Rooms are, by their own admission a young business based around a creative, bright and passionate team. They can manage the creative, the finance

as well as the operational hands-on design, build and install of your very own hand-built garden room. Since 2021 the team has grown to nearly thirty people who install several hundred garden rooms across the South of England and Wales every year.

Little Green Rooms (LGR) was founded by Jack Shaw - a designer and furniture maker devoted to sustainability. So LGR has benefitted from his long-standing approach to innovation, creativity and attention to detail.

But these garden rooms are no sheds. They look more architectural than functional and inside feel just like any room in your house. All Little Green Rooms’ buildings are designed to have a sedum green roof from the

outset. Everything is handmade, all the all timber is sourced from wellmanaged forests, insulation comes from recycled plastic bottles and every order generates a donation to 9Trees who plant and manage native woodland across the UK. These are truly green garden rooms. Not only that but this is a true people business with green partners and profit-share across the business.

This approach is nothing if not all encompassing. Little Green Rooms have created a stylish, functional and sustainable solution to deliver the extra space so many of us crave. A space to work in, relax, or to develop ideas & hobbies. These garden rooms have been designed from the ground up with home working in mind. The ethos is “positive spaces have positive impacts.” Every garden room is considered aesthetically,

functionally and acoustically. These rooms are designed to be warm in the depths of winter and cool in the warmest summer.

These are exactly the sort of credentials that we look for and not surprisingly we are more than happy to support. So, in the last few days Harrowden has become a key supplier to Little Green Rooms as their product is made for our Sedum Flat Roof Kit. In a noticeably short time, their customers have embraced sedum with all that means for pollinators and biodiversity.

Thankfully, green roofing is becoming increasingly mainstream. The work that has been done by LGR has been mirrored by architects, garden designers, property developers and householders all of whom are working to improve eco-efficiency and to combat the effects of climate change.

There is a plethora of benefits associated with a sedum roof, not least that it creates a real talking point. The Enviromat® green roof kit comes with everything to turn a standard space into a delightful green roof, full of plants and flowers. Components include a root barrier, a layer of specially engineered drainage mat to protect against

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

damage to the sedum roof and the building itself, then comes dedicated matting that ensures excess water is wicked away from the roots to keep the green roof secure and healthy.

Last but by no means least is the Enviromat® sedum roof. Essentially, a pre-grown green roof mat consisting of a carrier fleece for easy handling, specially formulated growing medium and of course, sedum plants. Plant coverage is at least 95%, so from the moment your Enviromat® is unrolled, the roof is fully planted.

Harrowden aims to mirror the sustainability shown by LGR. Enviromat® is grown outdoors, in the UK. It has a low carbon footprint and suits our climate well. Furthermore, there’s a lovely mix of plant species and it should flower for at least six months of the year.

The patented carrier fleece contains recycled materials that hold the growing medium permanently in place. That means minimal substrate loss during the handling process, less fiddling about and less slippage once the blankets are in situ.

Not only that but sedums plants are quite easy to care for. They cope well with drought conditions

so once established they will only need a very occasional watering in extremely dry weather. But feeding is important.

So, put the two together and maybe, just maybe you get the green roof / garden room solution we all aspire to. Not bad at all.

SUPPORTING GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE FROM THE GROUND UP

As the UK’s towns and cities adapt to climate change, urban growth and increasing rainfall intensity, green and blue infrastructure (GBI) has become essential to the performance of modern landscapes. Public spaces, highways and residential developments are now expected to manage water sustainably while delivering environmental and social value.

At the heart of this is surface water management. Often approached purely as a technical or compliance issue, when water is designed into landscapes through sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), it can add wider environmental and placemaking value.

This integrated approach underpins the work of BluWater Solutions.

Making SuDS work as part of the landscape BluWater Solutions specialises in

nature-based water management systems that support SuDS-led design. Working alongside landscape architects, designers, contractors and public bodies, the company helps integrate water management into the fabric of landscapes rather than concealing it below ground.

Features such as rain gardens and swales slow, filter and store surface water while creating attractive, biodiverse spaces. In streetscapes, public squares and parks, rain gardens offer a practical solution for managing runoff from hard surfaces, while improving soil health and supporting planting.

Supporting healthy soils and planting

The success of SuDS and rain gardens depends heavily on the performance of the growing medium. Hydrorock, a lightweight, porous substrate, supports water management at root level by

providing drainage during heavy rainfall while retaining moisture in drier periods. This improves plant resilience and reduces reliance on irrigation, making it well suited to constrained urban schemes.

Integrated water management across landscapes

BluWater Solutions also supports the use of green roofs and green walls to help manage water consistently across entire sites. By treating water as a connected system, landscapes are better equipped to respond to climate pressures.

As expectations for sustainable, multifunctional landscapes continue to rise, designing with water is no longer optional. Through thoughtful SuDS design, effective substrates like Hydrorock and close collaboration with project teams, BluWater Solutions helps ensure water works in harmony with landscape design.

BluWater Solutions is a BioScapes brand, established to help deliver practical, nature-based water management solutions. Our endto-end services include design and specification guidance, installation and maintenance support, CPD and community engagement opportunities.

Sustainable landscaping that performs today and protects tomorrow.

Support healthy planting and manage rainfall responsibly with our unique, scalable green-blue infrastructure solutions.

WHY ARE POWDER COATINGS SUCH A GOOD CHOICE FOR STREET FURNITURE?

Statement features

Within street and garden design and the wider built environment, the use of statement features is becoming increasingly popular. For street and garden furniture, decorative framing, water features, contrasting and complimentary colours, textures and forms are being used to add a unique element to the design. Who wants plain old green, black, white or grey in a world of colour?

At Powdertech we have developed a vast range of finishes for metal, embracing a multitude of colour hues and tones, textures and gloss levels. From raw steelwork and fabricated aluminium, to seating, large and small planters, pergolas, solar screens and water features, these durable and environmentally

conscious finishes will levitate design to a new level.

Avoid the hassles of wooden furniture and weighty stone features

Furthermore, our finishes can replicate materials that, whilst looking beautiful, have serious drawbacks. Wood needs special treatment and regular maintenance to prevent warping, rotting and discolouration. The sheer weight of stone leads to issues in construction and transport, and like wood, the surface requires regular cleaning. The popular appearance of rust can be replicated by Corten, but this is not a stable surface, and rainwater causes staining to leach on to surrounding materials and clothing.

Choose aluminium and steel and the protection of architectural powder coating.

So, consider the benefits offered by our vast range of powder coating finishes for your 2026 street furniture. There is no sacrifice of individuality as these crafted finishes will make even the most regular of products into a one-off.

PowderLUX®, the newest of our ranges brings ‘ageing without the waiting’. Patinated coppers, blackened steel, burnished bronze and glossy soft pastel – finishes that add a new dimension to colour and form. Evolved from the demanding world of architectural powder finishes where toughness and longevity are standard, PowderLUX brings this to the world of urban design.

Evolution™ finishes have an established reputation in construction and can be seen on buildings across the UK. With a wide colour pallet from dark and gritty Sharpened Flint to softer tones of Barley Beer, these finishes have pleasing texture and level of visual detail that makes you compelled to touch them and feel the pleasure of the close contact. The most popular ‘Rust’ finishes are inert and can be used in many areas where staining from water induced run-off is not desirable.

Wood finish (PWF™) is our longest established process with over 20-years in the field. When applied to steel or aluminium fabrications, seating, planters, decking or handrails, or wherever your imagination takes you, Wood Finish

offers a low maintenance superrealistic, tough finish. The days of sanding, staining, painting or repairing of rotten woodwork are gone.

Our Stone™ range has become popular with a move towards lightweight engineering. Long aluminium spans, large planters, and robust seating can be constructed with no weight-issues, and our powder coated stone finishes deliver realistic colours and textures.

You are manufacturing street furniture?

Powder coated finishes are factory applied by Powdertech in our UK facilities. If you are a metalworker, fabricator or manufacturer of one-off or mass-produced urban structures then get in touch and discuss the project with us. We can discuss the options, including advice on structural design to optimise coating.

You are a specifier for urban design? Landscape and urban designers, architects and specification professionals can access the extensive library of finishes by visiting our website and/or visiting our pages on the NBS Source website. We know that something in our incomparable range of unique finishes will excite you.

You can download a swatch on our website or on NBS as a BIM objects and add to specification. We can also advise on design, use and appropriate application whatever the environmental conditions, be it rural, urban or marine. Working alongside the metalworker, together we can bring your vision to reality.

Living with the finishes

The powder coating process does not use heavy metals, CFC’s, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), acid etching or age-accelerating processes. There is no chemical

HANDSPRING DESIGN: MAKING SUSTAINABLE TIMBER SHELTER, SCULPTURE

AND SEATING FOR PUBLIC SPACES AND PRIVATE PLACES FOR OVER 25 YEARS

We design and manufacture everything at our Sheffield Workshop, situated in the heart of South Yorkshire’s largest ancient woodland, using British timber, then flat pack or lorry load for delivery and installation all over the UK. Our public spaces work covers Viewpoint

sculptures and seating, meeting point and destination shelters and education spaces. All hand crafted with traditional and modern timber framing techniques. With an additional specialism in steam bending and glue laminating oak to create flowing curves for our more organic shelters and sculptures.

Attention to detail, strong connections and durability are key components of our design ethos, making creative structures that are visually interesting, elegant, sturdy and last the test of time. We use galvanised steel at ground level to keep the timber away from the damp zone and provide a secure platform to enable us to be creative/expressive with timber design above.

We are deeply rooted in the principles of sustainability and are always looking to take the next step along this essential journey, and are guided in our business decisions by our Sustainability Manifesto. One outcome of this approach is that we try to add in nature as much as possible and most of our shelters now have wildflower or sedum greenroofs. We also now have a range of Nature Positive sculptures which include Bug House Letters, habitat poles and clusters.

Around London you can see our work at Kew Gardens, on the South Bank of the Thames at White Hart Dock in Lambeth, at a new park on the St Georges Hospital site, a primary school in Wandsworth and a pocket park in Harlow.

THE EVOLVING LANDSCAPE:

HOW CUSTOMISATION IS RESHAPING STREET FURNITURE

At Woodscape, we’ve long understood the power of well-designed street furniture to transform public spaces for decades. From benches that invite quiet contemplation to planters that bring nature into urban environments, every element plays a crucial role in shaping our shared experiences. What we’re witnessing today, however, is a significant shift: a growing demand for customisation that is fundamentally reshaping the street furniture landscape.

Enhanced Functionality and Integration

Beyond aesthetics, customisation allows for the integration of specific functionalities. This could include incorporating lighting, charging points, waste management solutions, or even integrated planting, all designed to meet the exact needs of a particular space and its users.

Durability and Sustainability

At Woodscape, we understand that investment in street furniture is a long-term commitment. Custom pieces, especially when crafted from high-quality, sustainable materials like our Naturally Very Durable Hardwoods, can be designed for enhanced longevity and resilience, often outperforming mass-produced alternatives. This focus on durability also aligns with sustainable practices, reducing the need for frequent replacement.

Branding and Sponsorship Opportunities

For commercial developments or public-private partnerships, custom street furniture offers unique branding and sponsorship opportunities. Logos, bespoke colours, or specific design elements can be integrated, creating a cohesive and branded environment.

Gone are the days when off-the-shelf solutions were the default. Architects, landscape designers, and urban planners are increasingly seeking bespoke street furniture that not only meets functional requirements but also tells a unique story, reflects local identity, and enhances the overall aesthetic of a project. This move towards customisation isn’t merely a trend; it’s a response to the evolving needs of our communities and the desire to create truly distinctive and engaging public realms.

Why the Rise of Customisation?

Several factors are fuelling this growing emphasis on bespoke street furniture:

Placemaking and Identity

Successful placemaking is about creating spaces with a strong sense of identity and belonging. Custom street furniture allows for the incorporation of unique design elements, materials, and finishes that resonate with the local culture, history, or natural surroundings. This could involve incorporating specific motifs, using ethically sourced timber, or designing pieces that reflect the architectural style of surrounding buildings.

Unique Design Visions

Every public space project is unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities. Standardised furniture can sometimes feel generic or ill-fitting. Customisation empowers designers to realise their precise vision, ensuring that every piece of furniture seamlessly integrates with the overall design concept and contributes to the desired atmosphere.

Overcoming Site-Specific Challenges

Irregular terrain, unusual dimensions, or specific accessibility requirements can often make standard furniture unsuitable. Customisation provides the flexibility to overcome these practical hurdles, crafting solutions that are perfectly tailored to the site’s unique constraints.

Woodscape’s Approach to Customisation

At Woodscape, customisation is at the heart of what we do. With decades of experience working with timber, we have honed our expertise in crafting bespoke street furniture that marries exceptional design with unparalleled durability. Our capabilities extend beyond simple modifications; we thrive on collaborating with designers to bring truly unique concepts to life. From initial sketches and detailed CAD drawings to the precision of our joinery and the expert finishing, our team works closely with clients through every stage of the process. We leverage our deep understanding of timber’s properties to advise on the best materials and construction methods, ensuring that each custom piece not only looks stunning but also withstands the rigours of public use and the diverse British weather.

Looking Ahead

The growing role of customisation in street furniture is a testament to our collective desire for more thoughtful, authentic, and engaging public spaces. As urban environments continue to evolve, we anticipate that this trend will only strengthen. At Woodscape, we are proud to be at the forefront of this movement, continuing to push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship to create truly exceptional and enduring street furniture that enhances communities for generations to come.

THE CURRENT REVOLUTION: IS THE ERA OF CHEMICAL CONTROL CLOSING?

For decades, chemical herbicides have been the “easy button” for groundskeepers and landscapers. But the landscape is shifting— literally. With growing alarm over soil biodiversity loss, water contamination, and the rise of stubborn “superweeds,” the industry is facing a reckoning.

Across the channel, several European nations have already pulled the plug on chemical usage in public spaces. The UK is following suit; over 40 councils have already pledged to slash or scrap pesticides on public land. The big question for the modern landscaper isn’t why we should move away from chemicals, but how we manage urban aesthetics and infrastructure without them.

The Organic Toolkit: Beyond the Hoe

Let’s be honest: hand-pulling and hoeing are great for a boutique garden, but they aren’t exactly “scalable” when you have miles of kerbside or vast paved plazas to maintain.

The last two decades have seen a massive boom in chemical-free

tech, primarily focusing on thermal control (hot water, steam, or foam) and mechanical brushing. While these are excellent for clearing surface growth, they come with a few logistical headaches:

• Resource Intensive: They require massive amounts of water and energy for heating.

• The “Hydra” Effect: Thermal methods often fail to kill deeprooted perennials, which bounce back quickly.

• Seed Sowing: Paradoxically, the heat can actually “wake up” dormant seeds in the soil, leading to faster re-emergence and more frequent site visits.

Shock to the System: The Rise of eWeeding

If you’re looking for a systemic kill that rivals the efficiency of glyphosate without the chemical footprint, it’s time to talk about Electric Weeding.

Enter the eWeeding Roller. This compact, battery-operated unit is designed specifically for the “hard-tomanage” zones: roads, paved paths, and kerbs. It works by passing high-

voltage electricity through the plant upon contact. This isn’t just a surface burn; the electricity causes cells to collapse instantly, traveling down through the stems and into the roots for a truly systemic result.

Why Electric is Gaining Ground:

• Root-Level Results: Unlike steam, it damages the plant’s internal structure, including the roots.

• Ultimate Portability: No heavy water tanks or trailing hoses. The battery-powered roller is nimble enough for a single operator to push across large areas.

• Versatile Surfaces: It excels where other tools struggle, such as gravel driveways and artificial turf.

• Low Overhead: Once you have the unit, the maintenance and running costs are remarkably low compared to the constant refill cycle of chemicals or foam.

Know Your Limits

No tool is a magic wand. Electric weeding has its own “rules of engagement.” You won’t be using it in a downpour or through standing puddles, as water diverts the current away from the weeds. You also have to give metal fences and drain covers a wide berth to avoid electric arcing. For tight corners or steep steps, you’ll still need a secondary tool in your kit.

The Bottom Line

The transition to organic weed management isn’t about finding one single replacement for glyphosate— it’s about building a smarter, multi-faceted strategy. By putting prevention first and utilizing hightech solutions like the eWeeding Roller for systemic control, we can maintain beautiful, safe urban environments without compromising the health of our soil or our communities.

Precision control and systemic kill without water runoff.

Targets weeds without displacing or grinding the gravel.

Non-invasive; kills weeds without melting or fraying fibres.

Effective for shallow-rooted annuals in soft substrate.

Removes the "growing medium" (soil/detritus) along with the weed.

Small footprint for areas the Roller can't reach.

For many contractors, the decision to invest in electric technology comes down to the bottom line. While the upfront cost of an electric unit differs from a standard sprayer, the long-term operational shifts are significant.

Systemic Power: Unlike steam, the electricity travels into the root system, meaning fewer return visits to the same site.

Zero "Seed Wake-up": Because it doesn't heat the surrounding soil like thermal methods, it doesn't trigger the germination of dormant weed seeds.

Quiet & Clean: Battery operation means zero emissions and minimal noise—perfect for residential zones, hospitals, or school grounds.

Cost Efficiency: No expensive chemical concentrates to buy or store, and no high water bills. Just a simple battery charge.

Making the Switch: The ROI of “Electric”

Weather Dependent: You can’t use it in heavy rain or on surfaces with standing puddles, as water conducts the charge away from the plant.

No "Edge-to-Edge" on Metal: You must maintain a small gap around metal fences, manhole covers, and bollards to prevent arcing.

Obstacle Avoidance: It is a wheeled unit; it won't handle steep steps or the "dead zone" inside a tight 90-degree masonry corner.

Operator Pace: To ensure a lethal dose of electricity, the operator must maintain a steady, walking pace rather than sprinting.

When you move away from glyphosate, you are often trading a cheap chemical for a more expensive labor process. However, the eWeeding Roller bridges that gap. By achieving a systemic kill, it reduces the “re-growth cycle” that plagues hot water and mechanical brushing systems. For a council or a private contractor, this means your “rounds” last longer, your fuel/water costs vanish, and your environmental credentials skyrocket.

The Perks (Pros)
The Reality Check (Cons)

The Contractor’s Transition: 3

Tips for a Pesticide-Free Fleet We spoke with industry leads who have already made the jump. Here is their “boots on the ground” advice for integrating eWeeding and organic methods:

1. Phase the Roll-out: Don’t bin your entire inventory overnight. Start with “high-sensitivity” sites—schools, parks, and hospital perimeters— where public pressure for chemicalfree zones is highest.

2. Upskill the Team: Electric weeding requires a different “eye” than spraying. Operators need to learn the steady pace required for a systemic kill and how to spot “arc-risk” metal fixtures before they start a pass.

3. Manage Client Expectations: Educate your clients! Explain that while organic methods might see a slightly different “wilt time” than glyphosate, the long-term health of their soil and the safety of their residents is the ultimate payoff.

The Bottom Line

The shift toward electric and organic weeding isn’t just a trend—it’s the new industry standard. By investing in systemic tools like the eWeeding Roller, you aren’t just following regulations; you’re future-proofing your business against a world that is increasingly turning its back on the chemical spray.

Ready to Join the Chemical-Free Revolution?

The transition to sustainable grounds maintenance doesn’t have to be a headache. Whether you are looking to meet new council regulations, improve your environmental footprint, or simply reduce the rising costs of chemical consumables, the eWeeding Roller offers the professional, systemic solution your fleet has been missing.

Stop fighting the symptoms and start treating the root—literally.

SPECIFYING PEDESTALS: WALLBARN RAMPS UP THE CHOICE

Well-executed paved or decked spaces form the crowning glory of many public and private projects involving the transformation of open areas.

These suspended floors, supported by a system of pedestals hidden from sight, are a cost-effective solution with a number of benefits:

- they are quick and clean to install, with no requirement for sand, cement or heavy lifting equipment and no ground fixings required.

- they deliver finished surfaces that are perfectly flat even if ground levels vary, the site includes changes in height thresholds or there are immovable objects/ features that need accommodating.

- small gaps between the paving/ decking ensure the space drains efficiently and effectively.

- the void created beneath the surface is perfect for services, including electrical, heating, ventilation etc.

- they future proof projects, allowing easy access to the void for adding or accessing services, drains etc.

- some of the best systems allow for pedestal height to be fine-tuned post installation and offer Class A fire performance where compliance with Building Regulations, NHS HTM’s etc is required.

- the finished area is strong, hardwearing and long-lasting, with paving or decking appropriately

specified - for example non-slip or cool-to-the-touch in warm locations.

Specification is key to success, and that means understanding how the space will be used to ensure that the completed project is fit for purpose and strong enough to withstand the weight tolerances placed upon it long-term. This is especially important for public areas and if designers expect heavy use, planters, street art or heavy furniture on the suspended surface. Understanding usage lays the groundwork for selecting the most appropriate and cost-effective substructure to support the decking or paving chosen.

It must also be remembered that all elements of the paving/decking system must be suitable for exterior

use, so only weatherproof and rotproof solutions should be considered.

Choice

For the majority of applications, standard plastic pedestals offer the performance required for exterior applications at, or around, ground level. Look for a weight tolerance of around 680kg/pedestal and temperature tolerance of -40°C to +75°C to ensure a hard-wearing and long-lasting installation. If heavier traffic is anticipated, heavy duty plastic pedestals offer a weight tolerance of more than 1.5 tonnes each, with a breaking point of two tonnes. Standard metal pedestals can withstand two tonnes.

Market-leader Wallbarn offers both plastic and metal pedestals in fixed head and self-balancing systems, allowing any ground unevenness to be counteracted and imperfections, such as variations in paving slab thickness, to be smoothed out.

Wallbarn prides in having a pedestal system suitable for almost any project, from 25mm to 1m+ in both plastic and Class A metal. This wide choice allows contractors to cherry pick the precise heights and features they require, sourcing the entire system from one supplier with the benefits that delivers - one point of

contact for customer support, site deliveries perfectly timed etc.

Systems include:

- MiniPad: the ultra low height solution suitable for paving, decking and rail systems with different headpieces. Its height ranges from 10mm to 40mm, with special grips allowing installers to adjust height whilst the slab is in situ. MiniPad is ideal for achieving exact levels between 10mm and 25mm. Clipon 5mm extension plates provide additional height flexibility, particularly when the finished surface height is uncertain during the planning phase.

- Mega Balance: the ultimate one-stop solution with a weight tolerance of three tonnes and a height range of 25mm to 1025mm, Mega Balance offers unrivalled flexibility on site for paving, decking or the Wallbarn rail system. This self-levelling or fixed head pedestal reduces the need for multiple products, streamlining specification and installation. In addition, it can handle slopes of use to 5% and a ‘top key’ system allows in-situ height adjustments for paving.

- Mini Mega Balance: a gamechanger pedestal system delivering an ultra heavy-duty pedestal

accommodating 25mm to 75mm height requirements with no wastage. Suitable for paving, decking and rail systems.

- Balance: engineered to counteract unevenness, Balance has a telescopic stem twisted by hand to achieve the height required to millimetric precision, from 25mm to 392mm.

Wallbarn also offers the Class A rated MetalPad EX; fixed height pedestals (5mm to 17mm); the Universal range for paving and decking; rail system; accessories (including edging plates and slope correctors) plus a range of paving and decking finishes, including ExaDeck, cement fibre deckboards and Bamboo Elegance.

Conclusion

Pedestal systems create stunning finishes for urban areas, patios/ terraces, at-height podium decks and balconies. Not only do they look great, they facilitate the straightforward re-purposing of existing areas to increase a building’s usable space, creating versatile, lowmaintenance spaces.

DSV SEED HELPING CROWBOROUGH BEACON GOLF CLUB REACH NEW HEIGHTS

The quality of the playing surfaces at Crowborough Beacon Golf Club is the result of

passion, precision – and the right seed.

Course Manager Luke Jenkins has been achieving outstanding results using DSV’s PRO Summer Sport and PRO Rye Fairway mixtures from the EUROGRASS range, both of which have played a key role in improving the course’s playability and presentation.

Developed specifically for professional turf use, the EUROGRASS Pro mixtures are composed of carefully selected grass species and varieties to meet the highest standards of performance. Each blend is designed with the end user in mind – considering soil type, climate, intended use, and maintenance practices – to ensure exceptional establishment, density, and durability.

At Crowborough Beacon Golf Club, those qualities have helped elevate one

of the South East’s most historic and scenic courses. Established in 1885, the club is steeped in tradition – with early members including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – and boasts a classic heathland layout renowned for its sweeping views and distinctive character.

Course Manager Luke Jenkins has been at the helm for four and a half years, leading a programme of continuous improvement that has seen the course break back into the UK’s Top 100 golf courses.

“It’s a sleeping giant of a golf course,” says Luke. “The layout and landscape are stunning, but the course needed some TLC when I arrived. My goal has been to raise standards and get Crowborough Beacon recognised again among the best in the country – which we’re now achieving.”

Luke’s journey in greenkeeping began at just 16 when he joined Shooters Hill Golf Club in south-east London as an apprentice. He quickly rose to deputy, later taking on head roles at Woodlands

PURE PERFORMANCE

Eurograss Pro Range – New exclusive range created by top breeder DSV

High performance grass mixtures specially selected for professional sports surfaces.

Manor and deputy at Royal Wimbledon, before moving to Crowborough Beacon.

A big part of that success, Luke says, comes down to using the right seed mixtures.

“On the tees, we use PRO Summer Sport, which gives us quick germination and excellent wear tolerance,” he explains. “We’re repairing divots every day, and because our tees are small, I need grass to be growing within a week. The DSV mix establishes really fast, gives great colour, and stands up to heavy play.”

For the fairways, Luke relies on PRO Rye Fairway, a 70/30 blend of fescue and ryegrass that balances strength with a natural fescue finish.

THE PICTORIAL MEADOWS ® SUCCESSIONAL FLOWERING SOLUTION:

MAXIMISING IMPACT WITH MINIMAL MAINTENANCE

As landscape professionals, we are driven by a passion for creating spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful. Our goal? To design environments that are sustainable, visually captivating and responsive to the needs of both people and nature.

One of the most significant challenges is delivering landscapes that remain visually appealing across multiple months without constant intervention. This is where a successional flowering meadow offers a practical and highly effective solution.

Successional Flowering: The

Backbone of Pictorial Meadows® Products

Successional flowering is the art of designing plant communities where different species bloom in a carefully planned sequence, creating dynamic and evolving displays of colour and texture throughout the growing season. This approach can offer yearround appeal, ecological benefits and reduced maintenance. Successional flowering is core to the design of all our meadow products: annual seed mixes, perennial seed mixes and perennial meadow turf.

Pictorial Meadows® has perfected this concept through meticulous research, understanding not only the timing of each bloom, but also

how plants interact. Our expertly designed annual seed mixes, such as Classic and Pastel, ensure seamless transitions between flowering stages. The Classic mix begins with low-growing blooms like Moroccan toadflax and California poppy, followed by mid-height poppies and cornflowers, culminating with warm hues of tickseed in autumn. Each flowering stage is slightly taller, concealing the spent wildflowers of the previous one. The Pastel mix, by contrast, offers a gentler palette, starting with lace-like bishop’s flower with pale pink poppies, and finishing with late-season pink and white cosmos. Both annual seed mixes extend the flowering season from early spring to late autumn, and even into December in milder climates.

Practical Benefits for Landscape Professionals

For landscape professionals, successional flowering meadows provide the perfect balance of low maintenance and high impact, making them an ideal choice. The Classic and Pastel mixes establish quickly, with germination visible within 7–10 days and flowers appearing as early as six weeks after sowing. The carefully orchestrated progression of taller flowering stems throughout the season naturally suppresses weeds by shading and masking them, minimising the need

for time-consuming weeding and maintenance.

At the end of the season, management is straightforward. For annuals, the wildflower meadow can simply be cut down and left as a surface mulch. For perennials from wildflower seed or turf, cut and rake off. Leaving the wildflower meadow standing over winter provides ecological benefits such as seed-rich food for birds and shelter for insects, adding another layer of value for clients focused on sustainability.

Choosing a successional flowering meadow not only ensures an evolving display of colour and texture but also reduces the workload by freeing up time and resources while delivering outstanding results.

SPRING RESTART: THE VALUE OF PROFESSIONAL IRRIGATION RECOMMISSIONING

Spring brings new challenges and opportunities for facilities managers and estates teams. As irrigation systems come back online after months of winter shutdown, the risks of hidden faults, leaks, or blockages are high. A thorough, professional recommissioning process is crucial to protect your landscape investment and ensure compliance with ever-tightening water regulations.

A rushed or DIY restart often leads to avoidable problems. Burst pipes, uneven watering, controller failures, and undetected leaks can all result in wasted water, costly repairs, and reputational harm. The sector now expects clear evidence of preventative maintenance, water efficiency, and

regulatory compliance as standard practice. Falling short can mean not just operational setbacks, but also negative audits or insurance complications.

At Waterscapes, we manage every stage of irrigation system recommissioning. Our process starts with a full site and asset review, identifying any issues before activation. Professional cleaning and flushing remove debris and maintain water quality. Technical diagnostics, using specialist equipment, uncover hidden faults that could cause midseason breakdowns. Compliance and safety checks are performed in line with current regulations, with all work documented for future reference. Performance benchmarking provides a reliable

baseline for ongoing maintenance and planning.

This comprehensive approach protects valuable plant stock, reduces water waste, and gives facilities managers peace of mind. Our clients benefit from clear inspection reports and ongoing support, knowing their systems are operational and ready for the season ahead.

Spring is also the ideal time to review water-saving upgrades. Weather-based controllers, drip irrigation, and smart sensors can improve efficiency, support sustainability goals, and help meet regulatory requirements. Waterscapes can advise on the best enhancements for your site and handle installation as part of the recommissioning process.

What sets Waterscapes apart is our long-standing experience with complex commercial sites and our commitment to practical, transparent communication. We work closely with estates and facilities teams to tailor our approach, ensuring every recommissioning is completed efficiently and with minimal disruption. Our aim is to build lasting partnerships that support your operational needs year after year.

Demand for expert support rises sharply each spring, so early booking is essential. Waterscapes works in partnership with estates and facilities teams to deliver reliable, compliant irrigation restarts and ongoing support throughout the growing season.

HOW A WATER FEATURE HAS THE POWER TO REDEFINE EVERYTHING AROUND IT

OTTERBINE’S RANGE OF GIANT FOUNTAINS RESHAPE THE LANDSCAPE

When it comes to domestic garden and soft landscaping construction, categories that won big at the 2025 BALI Awards, the design statement that levels up and redefines how we think about exterior design is a fountain.

And when considering the options for what will comfortably fill the space at a country house, stately home or contemporary build, Otterbine has something big enough for every location and situation. The multi-tiered, multi-dimensional designs of Otterbine’s Giant Fountain range, including the Aqua Star, Aries, Equinox, Mystic, Polaris, Super Nova, and Triad fountains, fulfil the toughest of briefs, bringing the right balance, dimension, impact and texture to complement the landscape.

Robert Jackson, Division Manager at Reesink Hydro-Scapes, Otterbine’s UK distributor, says: “The size, shape, and design of Otterbine’s giant range commands attention in a way that rivals a five-star resort. It makes a first impression that resonates, upgrading curb appeal to new heights. We find this is what our high-end customers are looking for, a stylish and impactful welcome to their home for themselves and their guests.”

Now for the technical considerations, Otterbine’s Giant fountains range in power from 10 to 25 horsepower and suit shallow operating depths – a minimum of one metre of water. The floats for each fountain allow for easy height adjustment via a water

intake which minimises the visibility of the float and assists in keeping it level in the water.

They are designed for ease of handling – the large wheels on the frames of the unit can be moved around the lake eliminating, in most cases, the need for hoists and cranes.

When choosing Otterbine, customers make the decision to choose quality and quantity at a competitive price point.

MANSFIELD SAND PROVES TO BE A VALUABLE INVESTMENT AT WARWICKSHIRE GOLF CLUB

With 45 holes to maintain and a membership base of around 850 golfers, Warwickshire Golf Club presents no shortage of challenges for its greenkeeping team. From irrigation headaches to the sheer scale of day-to-day maintenance, Course Manager Matt Morris and Deputy Course Manager Joe Clifford need reliable products that deliver results. For them, Mansfield Sand has proven to be just that.

Matt, who first joined the club as a summer worker 23 years ago, explained how Mansfield Sand has become a long-standing part of their maintenance programme.

“It probably goes back about 10 years when the previous Course Manager, was using them,” he said. “I’ve just carried it on because they’ve always been good – from the products to customer service.”

Today, the team relies on Mansfield Sand’s MM40 for the greens and approaches, and a Divot Mix for the tees – both of which are producing strong results.

Used across the greens and approaches, MM40 has proven to be both consistent and kind to Warwickshire’s cutting units.

“The MM40 has given us good results,” said Matt. “It seems to be good on the machines as well – it’s not too aggressive on the mowers when we’re cutting so it isn’t destroying the bottom blades or cylinders. We’re not constantly grinding all the time, which is one of the biggest things for me. Plus, we don’t get any disease reaction either.”

For Joe, the consistency of the sand is just as important as the performance.

“Every load is the same – no debris, no stones, no contamination. It’s always good quality sand, which is a big winner.”

The club’s tees are treated with Mansfield Sand’s Divot Mix, which has made a

noticeable difference in recovery and growth, even during challenging weather conditions.

“We’re getting good results with that,” said Joe. “We’ve changed seed as well, and we’re divotting tees every day, but we’re still getting good growth and quick turnaround.”

Matt agreed, noting how the tees now recover far more quickly.

“With the combination of the seed and the Divot Mix, it’s made a big difference. The tees are recovering a lot quicker now.”

“It’s been a pleasure really – they’re always on time,” said Matt.

With deliveries timed around their two main maintenance periods in February and October, plus additional loads as needed, the team is able to manage stock efficiently across its three storage bays.

For Matt and Joe, Mansfield Sand has become a key part of keeping Warwickshire Golf Club in top condition, and they would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

“It’s just quality sand really,” Matt concluded. “Easy to order, good price, and consistent every time. For us, it’s been a really good investment.”

RESPONSIBLE ILLUMINATION: WILDLIFE-CONSCIOUS LIGHTING IN LANDSCAPE PROJECTS

In sensitive landscapes, light must be installed responsibly with consideration to natural surroundings. As awareness grows around bat roosts and ecologically sensitive sites, landscapers are often required to specify fittings that minimise upward light, reduce glare and limit disturbance. At Lumena Lights, wildlife-conscious design sits at the heart of our 12V, 240V and solar ranges, helping you create safe, compliant and beautifully considered landscapes.

For existing 50mm fittings such as our AlvaLED (available in both 12V and 240V), a simple yet effective adaptation is the addition of a 50mm frosted glass lens. By diffusing and softening the beam, the frosted lens reduces harsh glare and contrast. This is particularly beneficial for bats and owls, as a more even spread of light lessens visual disruption along flight paths and feeding routes. Reduced glare also limits sharp shadow lines, helping maintain natural orientation cues. Insects benefit

too; softer, warmer and diffused light is generally less attractive and less disorientating than intense, exposed point sources. For further control, a honeycomb filter narrows and directs the beam, reducing spill light and improving light placement without increasing output.

Low-level guidance lighting is equally important. Eyelite (12V and 240V) and Monolite (240V) step lights provide discreet illumination for safe navigation while keeping light directed to the ground. Designs such as the Charleston Spreadlight eliminate upward glare with a broad shade, casting light downwards only. For pathways and commercial sites, our 12V Mini Walkway and 240V Marina (316 stainless steel) and Fortress bollards are engineered for minimal to no uplight, with optional 180º Glare Shields for Ledifice, Lighthouse and Parabola models to further reduce spill.

Our Pro Solar range offers a truly hassle-free solution. With integrated light receptors, fittings such as the Halopost (0% upward light),

Lava, Eccentrica, Bastion, Arc, Cresta, Endura and Hiway deliver controlled, warm illumination –many between 2500K and 2700K –without trenching or mains cabling. PIR and photocell sensors, available across most 12V and 240V fittings, ensure light is used only when required.

Wildlife is not an afterthought; it is a responsibility. At Lumena Lights, we combine considered optics, warmer colour temperatures (including 1800K amber options across our Pro Bollard range) and robust, highquality materials to deliver lighting that respects its surroundings. Share your plans with us, and our team will assist with layout, cabling distances and product specification – helping you achieve a scheme that is both beautifully lit and ecologically sound. ACROSPIRE DELIVERS SEAMLESS HERITAGE LIGHTING UPGRADE ON BATH’S NORTH PARADE BRIDGE

Acrospire has supported Bath & North East Somerset Council in retrofitting heritage lighting on the Grade II listed North Parade Bridge, one of the city’s historic gateways. The upgrade forms part of a wider programme to modernise lighting assets across the World Heritage Site, improving energy efficiency and enabling CMS connectivity while preserving the bridge’s original character.

Located just downstream of Pulteney Bridge, North Parade Bridge was constructed in the 1830s and plays an important role in connecting Bath’s Georgian centre with the sports fields and riverside walks of Bathwick. Its four cast iron lanterns, restored in 2013 after decades of inactivity, were still using traditional high-pressure sodium lamps and had become due for an upgrade.

With the bridge’s listed status and highly sensitive visual setting, the challenge was to deliver a low-

glare lighting solution that blended in seamlessly and preserved the historic character of the structure.

Working with Bath & North East Somerset Council, Acrospire refurbished the four heritage-style lanterns, restoring the original housings and integrating new 40W 2700K COB (Chip on Board) LED units with T3 optics. Each lantern was finished in black with a traditional gold finial, ensuring the appearance remained in keeping with the bridge’s historic context and Bath’s wider heritage lighting scheme.

The solution was also designed with sustainability in mind. By refurbishing and reusing the original lanterns rather than replacing them entirely, the project supports circular economy principles, extending the lifespan of existing assets, reducing material waste, and preserving the unique character of the site.

In addition, the lanterns were made fully compatible with the council’s Central Management System (CMS), allowing for dimming schedules that reduce light levels during off-peak times. This approach cuts energy use while maintaining safety and visual comfort for pedestrians.

The result is an upgrade so subtle, most people haven’t noticed the difference — except when it comes to reduced energy consumption.

The Client commented, “Everyone at Acrospire is really helpful and will do whatever it takes to get the job done properly. It’s such a good job that no one’s noticed the difference since the switch, apart from the energy savings, which is always the best result in my books”.

Many operations are unaware of the benefits of LED Lighting set against Traditional Discharge light sources (SON & Metal Halide) which are now in principle banned in the UK / EU. Upgrading is a necessity.

All our exterior flood lights installed at height are of European Manufacture including certification and suitable for all Sporting Facilities. Attention is paid when sourcing luminaires – we ensure they are future proof with regard to after sales service, and spares are available for a minimum of 10 Years following installation.

Challenger ensures all cable ways are upgraded to the latest specifications with regard to above ground level / supporting columns including incoming mains connections. 5 Year on site guarantees apply. Surveys are carried out without obligation at zero cost to the Customer.

The installation illustrated below reduced energy consumption by 9,300 KWh per Year with increased light levels to circa 60%. The annual cost saving was £2,400 PA based on circa 840 hours PA. Full details of the scheme are available in detail.

HELMINGHAM ESTATE REVEALS PLANS FOR NEW WOODLAND ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND

Woven within a stunning four-acre wood in the grounds of Helmingham Estate, Guildenacre will be an immersive new play experience featuring four themed areas, designed and created by worldclass playground designers CAP.CO (Creating Adventurous Places).

Children of all ages can embark on a magical adventure into nature as they step into a world where a glimmer of gold hints at tales untold and join four special guardians who protect the forest with the help of the magical Whispering Oak Tree.

Each of the playground areas is themed around one of the guardian animals and their habitat – whether that’s burrowing into the ground or soaring high up into the trees. Alongside adventurous play, there’s also an educational aspect with different themed activities, including stamp stations, to complete an accompanying trail sheet.

Edward Tollemache, custodian of Helmingham and co-founder of Guildenacre with his wife Sophie said: “This meticulously considered

new addition to the Helmingham Estate will be an exciting mix of challenge, discovery and intrigue for all its visitors, both young and the young at heart. Inspired by the estate’s beautiful surroundings and the animals you would expect to find in the neighbouring habitats, you will see references to our family’s coat of arms in the form of a magical flying Pegasus which we hope our visitors will enjoy discovering too.”

With unmistakable badger stripes covering the top of the turrets, the

first play area to discover will be Flint’s Hollow, home to Flint the Badger - full of tunnels, burrows and two-storey lookout spots. Children can weave up to the highest point and soar back down through a covered, twisty slide.

Woven high up into the trees is Eira the Owl’s Canopy Keep, where you can journey up the wooden walkway or climb the rope ladder to the stargazing deck to scour the skies or send secret messages to your fellow explorers with the Keep’s talking tubes.

The largest of the structures is the Elderglade, looked after by Atlas the Stag, where children can enjoy climbing walls, tunnels, ladders, multi-level walkways, bridges and several impressive slides to race down.

Featuring an adrenaline-fuelled zip line and another designed for younger explorers, as well as a racing slide, ground-level play trails and balance beams, Vex the Vixen’s, the Ember Den, is the fourth area within Guildenacre which encourages explorative play and is ideal for older children.

All four play areas will be linked with bark pathways suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs as well as a den building zone for children to build their own dens and hideouts. There will also be refreshments and toilets within the wood itself.

Celia Deeley, estates director for Helmingham said: “Construction of the playground is being carefully managed to cause minimal disruption to the estate’s woodland, to preserve habitats and to ensure that ancient trees are undamaged during the build.

“We’ll be using estate materials as much as possible and have chosen a wood-themed design to complement and blend into the surroundings, so that our visitors feel even more immersed in nature.”

Alongside the adventure playground, Helmingham will be creating modest refreshment and retail facilities at the Grade II listed Wades Barn which will be the entry point for visitors as they get ready to embark on their magical experience at Guildenacre.

Edward added: “With the introduction of our new playground, visitors will have even more to experience during a day out at Helmingham. Guildenacre will be a

wonderful accompaniment to our Grade I listed gardens, 400-acre deer park, shops and seasonal events.”

The new adventure playground’s build schedule, which also includes a separate car park, will continue throughout the start of 2026 ahead of the planned opening this summer.
