The development officially named The Arc, is a key element of the new community facilities being developed by Homes England within Brookleigh at Burgess Hill. The new outdoor sports centre has been delivered by Mid Sussex District Council and their development partner Alliance Leisure, procured via the UK Leisure Framework (managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd). The wider project team also included The Sports Consultancy, AtkinsRealis, Hadron Consulting, S&C Slatters and White Horse Contracting.
At the heart of the development sits a net-zero timber-frame changing pavilion, designed and built by modular construction specialist TG Escapes. It features four Sport England compliant changing rooms, officials’ changing facilities, kit stores, accessible WC’s and a reception area. The changing facility, designed with sustainability at heart, utilises modern construction methods, a timber frame system, eco-friendly materials, and cutting-edge technology to create a warm, inviting space that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings.
The Arc brings a range of first-class sporting facilities, delivered by S&C Slatters, to the heart of Burgess Hill, while also serving communities and clubs across Mid Sussex. The Arc is being managed by Places Leisure, who also manage the nearby Triangle. The facilities include:
• A floodlit artificial football pitch
• A floodlit artificial rugby pitch
• Three junior natural turf football pitches
• A full-sized natural turf football pitch
• An artificial cricket wicket with a turf outfield
• Car park, landscaping and play area
The newly developed centre represents an investment in health, wellbeing and community connection in Burgess Hill. The design of the facility has been refined over three years through extensive community engagement, consultation and data analysis, and has been purpose-built to complement the district’s existing sports infrastructure.
Located on an 8.6-hectare site, The Arc is part of the Brookleigh
development, providing 3,500 homes (30% affordable), public spaces, infrastructure and community facilities in Mid Sussex.
The outdoor sporting facility has been funded in part through developer contributions (Section 106), ensuring that the new community centre is directly supported by local development, building meaningful connections with the community and a sense of shared ownership from the very beginning.
Designed with a focus on sustainability, the carefully planned site has been built to the highest environmental standards and developed to complement the local environment.

Despite a year of challenging weather, Bristol Golf Club has seen a remarkable improvement in its playing surfaces and overall visitor experience thanks to innovative seed solutions from DLF. The team, led by Course Manager Dave Taylor, introduced Johnsons J 4Turf 50 across all 27 tees in early 2025 which has gone on to demonstrate outstanding resilience and strong performance, coping with the pressures of a busy championship course.
With far reaching views across the Severn Estuary into Wales, Bristol Golf Club boasts an 18-hole Championship Course, a 9-hole Par 3 and 18-bay driving range alongside a whole host of other practice facilities and corporate grounds. Seeking to deliver lasting improvements on and off the course for the last eight years is Dave Taylor who turned to DLF Regional Technical Manager Ian Barnett to tackle some particularly problematic areas prone to wear, disease and drought.
“We’re an incredibly busy site, with high levels of foot traffic on the tees which also don’t all have the benefit of full irrigation” Dave explains. “Because of this I spoke with Ian about a harder-wearing mix, that would germinate quickly and tolerate the challenges of footfall and less than ideal weather conditions.” The solution came in the form of J 4Turf 50 from the Johnsons Sports Seed range. The 50/50 blend of diploid perennial and tetraploid perennial ryegrass ensures rapid establishment even under low soil temperatures and creates a deeprooting, disease-resistant sward.
“Even in the extreme weather, the results we’ve seen have been outstanding” Dave says. “It germinated quickly and, what small amount of dormant seed we had, kicked straight into action as soon as the rain returned in early September. The recovery, density and wear tolerance on all of our tees has been exceptional.” He adds, “Not only have we not had to do any additional autumn overseeding on the tees, we’ve also not seen any

Dollar Spot this year which means we’ve saved time and money by not having to apply any fungicides.”
Beyond course playability, Dave has also worked with DLF to create a strong first impression for members and visitors with the introduction of a new wildflower area at the club entrance. Created with Carnival from DLF’s Colour Boost collection, the vibrant display of bright and bold annuals in the spring became quite the talking point. “Because we host weddings and corporate events alongside the golf, these visual touches make a big difference.”
The return of the rain has meant new waves of colour are now emerging, with plans in place to expand the trial to new planting areas across the course in 2026. “The flowers don’t just deliver visual impact, they help us to enhance biodiversity –creating environments to encourage and support all types of insects and wildlife.”

Leading sports surfaces specialist, SIS Pitches, has reported a 44% yearon-year increase in hybrid pitch installations, driven by demand from Premier League football clubs.
The growth in demand for durable, high-performance playing surfaces among football’s elite in preparation for the current season has meant that SIS stitched hybrid playing surfaces for half of the clubs in the Premier League this summer to help them prepare for the current season. The growing adoption of SIS Grass Hybrid at stadiums and training facilities has also been seen abroad, especially across Europe, the Middle East and in North America.
In the past six months alone, SIS Pitches has stitched hybrid surfaces at stadiums or training grounds for the likes of Aston Villa, Chelsea,
Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.
Notable among its list of successful projects this summer was the stitching of the new hybrid pitch at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The state-of-the-art playing surface was installed alongside a SIS Air AquaCycle aeration and water management system, making it one of the most advanced playing surfaces in the world.
SIS’ impact is equally felt across the Championship, League One, and League Two. Clubs such as Birmingham City, Wrexham, Derby County, Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage, Mansfield, Colchester United, Swindon Town, Notts County and Stockport County have all benefited from SIS Grass Hybrid or SIS Synthetic artificial surfaces.
Notably, Stockport County’s SIS Grass Hybrid pitch at its Edgeley Park stadium contributed to the club winning the EFL’s Grounds Team of the Season award two years running.
Non-league clubs are also embracing the latest hybrid pitch technology, recognising the performance and durability benefits seen at higher levels. Hednesford Town is one such example, having invested in a new SIS Grass Hybrid surface at its Keys Park home with the same aeration, vacuum drainage and water recycling and management system installed at Everton’s new world-class sporting, music and entertainment arena.
Earlier this summer, the leading sports surfaces specialist made a multi-million-pound investment in a new fleet of 16 hybrid pitch stitching machines, which allow
faster installations and greater configurability for its global customer base. This investment also eases operational pressure for groundspeople working at multi-use stadia, whose narrowing timeframes to install hybrid grass pitches between matches and non-sporting events represents a major challenge. This need for speed and flexibility – without compromising quality - has been driven by clubs and franchises around the world seeking to maximise stadium revenue by hosting concerts, exhibitions and fixtures spanning multiple sports.
Ivo Lamot, CEO at SIS Pitches said: “Demand for our elite-level hybrid pitch technology has never been greater, not just among clubs in the Premier League but many others around the world.
“The rise of the multi-use stadium and the revenue it can generate means many forward-thinking clubs are looking to install or replace their playing surface in a much tighter timeframe than before. Having invested significantly in our advanced stitching capabilities, we’re best placed to meet those needs, which is resulting in an increase in projects from new and existing clients.
“Furthermore, with the recent launch of our new Game-Ready Hybrid pre-stitched turf product, means we can harvest and transport turf with the hybrid fibres already within the profile. This means a ready-to-play, reinforced surface can be installed in an exceptionally quick timeframe.
“One of the best things about hybrid pitch technology is its accessibility at all levels of competition. We’re seeing an increase in interest from clubs further down their respective countries’ football pyramids, eager to benefit from the consistency and durability it brings. We’re fully expecting this growth trajectory to continue well into next year and beyond.”

Fifteen MJ71-400 mowers boost efficiency, cut maintenance costs and deliver a cleaner finish across parks, verges and green spaces.
Like most major city councils, Leeds City Council takes responsibility for the management of significant areas of city parks, green spaces, roundabouts and roadside verges as part of its services commitment to the local community. They have some local school sport contracts and operate totally within the Leeds City boundary. Leeds is the third largest City in England covering an
area of just over 43 square miles. A recent acquisition of fifteen Major MJ71-400 3PL Roller Mowers, offered under tender through their local dealer, GGM of Colne, Lancashire saw the replacement of the council’s previously installed gang mowers and older Major rotary mowers, purely as a need to update to more efficient operations while replacing older machines that had reached their useful life expectancy.
According to Stephen Whiteside, Workshop Engineering Manager for Leeds City Council, “We changed
out our old machines at around five years because they had reached the end of their lifecycle. We were also looking at reducing maintenance costs to keep the fleet operating with minimal expenditure. When we send out tenders, we review each machine or brand’s warranty offering, expected delivery time, after-sales service and lifetime expectancy and overall cost. These elements are all percentage weighted, but the biggest deciding factor is cost.”
Leeds City Council’s choice of Major MJ71-400 3PL Roller Mower which
comes with a comprehensive three-year warranty, means not only are they choosing machines that are highly competitive in price, but because they have previously used Major rotary mowers, they have gained first-hand experience at the durability of these mowers in virtually everyday use. Additionally, they also bring a number of performance benefits to the jobs they undertake.
For example, residents will have noticed previously that clippings had been left after they had cut the grass in the parks and on verges, particularly after gang mowers. The latest Major MJ71-400 Roller Mower is designed to pulverise the grass clippings and forced them back into the turf, therefore avoiding unsightly clumps of grass clippings. With a 4.0m working width and folding wings offering a transport width of just 1.90 metres, the MJ71400 will cover the ground quickly at up to 11.4 acres an hour, and with its six rotors and 12 blades, traveling
at 75 metres/second, grass clippings don’t stand much of a chance. Like all Major mowers, the MJ71 Roller Mower is built using Strenx 700 MC, which is a high performance, light weight steel, much stronger than ordinary mowers. Likewise they are hot-dip galvanised so will give long-life with anti-corrosion benefits.
By upgrading to the Major MJ71-400 Roller Mowers, Leeds City Council has not only modernised its fleet but also ensured long-term efficiency, durability and cost savings. With their robust build, advanced cutting performance and low-maintenance design, these machines will help the council continue delivering highquality green space management for the community, while maximising value from their investment.

The clients sought to extend and transform their period property in Altrincham with a bold, contemporary aesthetic. The project involved a significant remodelling of the rear elevation, including an extension to the main house and the creation of an annex at the rear of the garage. Their vision was for a garden that seamlessly extends the interior spaces, creating a luxurious, modern environment inspired by contemporary designs seen in West Coast USA, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Scandinavia. A key challenge was designing a central courtyard that functions as both an outdoor living area and a visual continuation of the interiors.
Tsiantar Architects delivered a subtle, contemporary design that
respects the original architecture while embracing modern luxury. The interior spaces of both the main house and annex are contemporary, allowing the garden to serve as an extension of this aesthetic. The central courtyard acts as a fluid inside-out space: a large Pratic bioclimatic pergola from Skye Outdoor Living shelters a central outdoor living room with Tribu sofas, while a raised hardwood deck incorporates a sunken hot tub and a striking living wall. Complementing these features are a cantilevered cream Schellevis floating bench and a backlit disc of liquid metal, both supported by a hidden steel frame. At the rear of the annex, a minimalist outdoor kitchen sits beneath a cantilevered steel and timber pergola that echoes the design of the central structure.
Schellevis Materials
Choosing the right surface material was key to achieving the desired oversized, chunky, contemporary look. Schellevis large-format slabs were the perfect solution. With thicknesses up to 120mm and lengths up to 2.4m, they create a robust, tactile surface without the need for costly porcelain fabrication or complex, weather-dependent concrete works. The availability of a cream-colored variant—unusual for a product that is normally grey—was another significant advantage, complementing the warm, modern palette. Durability and low maintenance were equally important: Schellevis slabs weather beautifully over time, developing subtle character with moss or patina, something porcelain cannot replicate.
The bioclimatic pergola was chosen to ensure the central courtyard could be used year-round, providing shelter without overwhelming the period architecture. The floating bench and liquid metal disc address the limited planting space in the courtyard and the proposed brick wall connecting house and annex. The living wall maximises vertical space, softening the hardscape while creating a dramatic backdrop visible from inside and across the garden. Bronze finishes, specified by the interior and kitchen designers, informed the creation of the liquid metal disc, which contrasts with the planting and strengthens the connection to the home, enhancing the inside-out flow. The floating concrete bench continues the material dialogue with the wider garden and provides a contemplative seating area by the hot tub.
Inside, two types of sandy beige porcelain with different textures had been specified. Rather than
attempting to blend these directly in the courtyard, a bridging material was needed. Slimline limestone pavers provided subtle texture while remaining smooth underfoot, harmonising with the interior tones. The Schellevis cream slabs introduced an additional texture with their pitted concrete effect, while the large format links visually to the interior porcelain tiles, completing the material palette. The overall palette—earthy beiges through warm greys and greige tones—creates a light, airy atmosphere. Subtle variations in finish and texture add visual interest without cluttering the design. Black steel elements and floating Schellevis features provide an industrial edge, with shadow gaps and stark contrasts juxtaposed elegantly against the sinuous lawns and lush, naturalistic planting of the wider garden.
The result is a warm, contemporary garden where oversized Schellevis slabs, limestone, porcelain, steel, and planting work in harmony. The space

offers a fluid connection between interior and exterior, combining luxury, practicality, and striking visual impact.

Garden rooms are a dream addition to any home. But while many are drawn to the idea, the cost of hiring professionals can quickly turn that dream into a pricey reality.
One thrifty couple from Solihull took matters into their own hands and built their dream garden room from scratch — saving tens of thousands in the process.

Louise Peer, 46, is mum to a 6-yearold and works full-time. After two years of working from home from a tiny desk in a dark bedroom, Louise and her husband, Ewan, 41, set out to create a multi-functional garden room designed for home working, relaxing, and entertaining.
She told Factory Direct Flooring:
“We had a bad experience with builders when we renovated our home a few years ago. They told us an extension would take eight weeks, and six months later it still wasn’t done. So when it was time for a garden room, we didn’t want to face a similar experience and decided to project-manage and build everything ourselves.
“We’re completely self-taught; my husband has always been really handy by nature, and watched
YouTube videos for anything he didn’t know how to do. The only things we called professionals in for were the electrics and plastering — literally everything else was DIY. Even with a more complicated herringbone design, laying our flooring was easy and took less than a day, thanks to clear instructions. We chose LVT because it’s water resistant, robust, and less sensitive to temperature variations.”
Had Louise and Ewan gone down the professional route, they estimate it would have cost them £35,000+ to build the garden room to the same high specification they’ve achieved, and that’s before they decorated and furnished the interior. All in, they estimate they spent £18k, saving around 50%.
Louise explained she waited until Black Friday to make the most of discounts on interiors, like 20% off bar stools and a slashed price tag on her sit-stand desk. She shopped around too, and found bargain prices for things like her ‘living wall’ of faux plants, which she bought from eBay for £30 per square metre (half the price of other retailers she considered), and a reduced herringbone LVT floor from Factory Direct Flooring.
The finished garden room is primarily used by Louise for remote work, and doubles as a space for entertaining friends:
“It has made such a difference. It’s so nice to walk out of my back door and go to work in my garden. The bedroom I used to work in was so

dark and cramped in comparison, and now I have so much more natural daylight in there thanks to big bi-fold doors and a full-length window. It’s been a game-changer for my day-to-day work. Before, I’d reach the weekend with peak cabin fever, but thanks to the physical separation of my work and home space, I feel that a lot less often now.
“Aside from work, whenever my friends and I are down the pub, we often come back here — there have been a few times where the school mums and I have been dancing in our garden room ‘til late! Everyone who sees it says ‘oh my God!’ and is in awe of the finish, even more so when they find out we did it ourselves. I love that it’s separate from the house too because we can tackle the mess from parties the

• Louise, 46, desperately wanted a separate home office and entertaining space
• She was put off hiring professionals after a bad experience with rogue builders
• Louise and her husband Ewan decided to DIY the whole project
• They kitted it out with Black Friday deals and bargain buys from eBay, Amazon, and Dunelm
• Couple estimates they saved £17,000 doing the project themselves

next day, and it’s insulated well to keep noise low.”
When asked about challenges they encountered during the project, Louise said: “One of the biggest roadblocks was British weather! The rain was so awful — our lawn turned into a bog in the process because that’s where we received deliveries and did the work in situ, so we had to re-seed the garden afterwards.”
Louise told Factory Direct Flooring that they see the garden room as an investment: “We researched our options and found that a garden room can improve property value by 5-10%, and after weighing this up against costs to do the project ourselves, it was a no brainer. We didn’t have to sacrifice much outside space either, because where the garden room now sits was just bushes at first. After clearing it all out, we were thrilled to find more space than we thought we had to fit the garden room, leaving a decently sized lawn and massive play area for my son.”
While the couple have no immediate intentions to sell their home, it’s clear Louise and Ewan relish a project: “There’s nothing I’d change about the garden room; we’re so pleased with how it turned out. It was great to have the vision for something that we were able to bring to life ourselves. We didn’t have to rely on anyone else and at the end of the project it was amazing to see the work we’d done. We’ve still got at least one more house renovation in us, but for now we’re going to enjoy what we’ve done.”
Paul Hambidge, Founder at Factory Direct Flooring, said: “DIY is increasingly popular, not just because of the cost savings, but for personal satisfaction too. It’s encouraging to see homeowners like Louise and Ewan taking on ambitious projects themselves, and I hope it inspires confidence in others with similar goals for their home. We’ve put together 20 jargon-free installation guides for anyone who needs a helping hand in DIYing their floors.”
As standard, Factory Direct Flooring is up to 60% cheaper than the high street and offers a price match guarantee. That’s because they source directly from manufacturers at competitive prices and pass these benefits directly onto customers.

A hotel in Euston, London, has transformed a former garage into a rare community-first green space, now open to the public.
Launched in July, the new garden at The Wesley Euston demonstrates how urban areas can be repurposed to reduce waste, support biodiversity and bring people together. The initiative forms part of The Wesley’s wider commitment to sustainability and responsible hospitality.
Conceived by the hotel’s Green Team, the garden transforms a concreteheavy corner into a welcoming, multi-use space. The project is supported by the HS2 rail network’s environmental and community programme, which has created temporary community gardens on land awaiting construction. Plants from these sites will be donated to the hotel’s new garden, to be enjoyed by locals, guests and staff long after those sites close.
Speaking on the opening, James Barr, General Manager at The Wesley, said: “Green space is essential for wellbeing, especially in a busy part of London like Euston, where it’s often hard to find a quiet moment. We wanted to create somewhere that feels open and accessible to everyone – whether it’s staff on a break, a guest enjoying a coffee or a local resident looking for a calm spot to take a breather. We’ve also worked closely with local charities, youth groups and community organisations to make sure the garden’s genuinely useful to the local area. Overall, it shows how even a small space can make a big difference to people’s daily lives.”
Artificial plants have been replaced with living greenery chosen to support biodiversity and attract pollinators. Bamboo, photinia, ferns and ivy have been planted alongside composting systems and seasonal
rotation to reduce waste and support the hotel’s net zero targets.
Timber planters double as seating, a circular central planter creates a focal point and hanging baskets have been added to soften the surrounding walls.
Alongside the garden, the hotel continues to support Camden Foodbank as a trusted donation point for non-perishable items - a joint effort with The Wesley Euston’s sister hotel, The Wesley Camden - reinforcing its long-term commitment to supporting the local community.
Plans are underway to host sustainability workshops, wellbeing sessions and events, utilising the garden as a hub for social connection and learning.

Readyhedge hedging plants, like the mixed native hedging shown here, are container-grown in the UK and fully acclimatised to UK conditions. With over 20 years’ experience, Readyhedge delivers hedging to rely on, wherever you are.

Native Mix Hedges are the perfect hedging option for a natural look, as they contain plants that are all native to the UK and as such emulate traditional country hedgerows found throughout Britain.
Top 5 features of Mixed Native Hedges
1. Seasonal year-round interest
2. Natural windbreak and noise reduction
3. Thrives in all but the coldest or waterlogged locations
4. Increased security; such hedges have kept livestock in check for centuries
5. Attractive to all kinds of wildlife
Mixed Native hedges create a natural look and contain a variety of colours and textures which provide a rich living collage for excellent seasonal interest. From the structural beauty of bare winter twigs, early spring blossom and lush
summer foliage, while the autumn brings fruits, berries and wonderful golden colours.
All kinds of wildlife will be attracted to these native hedges, which provide food, shelter and nesting places for birds, mammals and invertebrates.
Native hedging, by its very nature, will thrive on most soil types and can be planted in all but the deepest of shade. It will tend to grow quite quickly at some 20 – 40 cm per year and will require pruning once a year. It can also be left un-pruned, when it will prove even more wildlife friendly.
Our Practical Native Mix generally contains the following species:
• Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)
• Field Maple (Acer campestre)
• Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus)
• Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)
• Hazel (Corylus avellana)
• Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)
• Privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium)

The Bristol landscape offers opportunities for truly arresting garden builds. Here, with a breathtaking view across the Avon Gorge, sleek modern architecture made one of our most popular porcelain paving colours a perfect fit for this multifunctional design.
The finished project is by Artisan Landscapes Bristol, using Florence Grey porcelain paving in combination with clay pavers.
A plot with a drop of 30m from the top of the drive to the bottom of the garden, on a steep-sided river gorge, would make some landscapers think twice. Artisan Landscapes stepped up to the mark. “No machinery access and question marks over the existing construction were just two of the many hurdles,” explains Will Cooke,
founder and managing director.
“But I trusted our design team to create something special and our experienced landscaper to deliver. And they did.”
When the client moved in to this beautiful view of the Avon Gorge, the patio was just decking and artificial grass, with no safety railings.
The young couple who had moved in with their children knew how unsuitable their outdoor areas were.
“The site was unusable,” says Will. “They wanted a multi-functional space to cook outside, use as a family, to entertain other families and groups of friends and children, and enjoy themselves.” Instead, they had a very sterile space, with no plants
at all and, frighteningly, a 7m drop from an unfenced edge.
With no machinery access, everything had to be hand-dug and portered.
With no machinery possible on site, it was fortunate that the existing “garden”, put in place by the developer, comprised only artificial grass and decking and was simple to remove. However, great care was needed over the construction, as the position obviously made it of the utmost importance that the base was rock-solid. Once everything was dug out by hand, behind the alreadyexisting huge retaining wall, concrete was pumped in from a lorry at the top of the drive. A wire balustrade finally ensured the space was safe to use.
Why Florence Grey porcelain paving?
Florence Grey porcelain paving is a high-quality material that gives a luxury appearance to this modern build by Artisan Landscapes.
“We’ve used Florence Grey porcelain paving many times before,” says Will. “We’re very confident in it as a product.” This confidence is a result of its lasting quality. “Porcelain has an applied finish,” he adds, “so it’s down to how well it’s applied, as to how long the finish lasts. There’s also the manufacturing quality—we can cut Florence without risk of chipping and it responds well to being worked.”
On top of this, it was important to use a porcelain paving that matched the quality of the high-spec architecture and blended with the palette of the house. Which it does. Perfectly!
Mitre-cut Florence Grey porcelain slabs double up as cladding on the wall that separates the seating area from the barbecue, where it makes an easy-to-clean, robust splashback.
It’s also a great match for the clay pavers which Will chose to tone with the porcelain paving. Combining porcelain and clay pavers is becoming a classic design choice, as colours can be easily matched while creating an interesting contrast between the texture and finish of traditional and modern materials.
All our porcelain paving carries a 10-year Guarantee, so whatever you choose, you can rest assured of its quality.
The result
The different textures of clay pavers and porcelain paving add character to the patio.
Now the outdoor space has a coherence that makes it a truly family space. The different levels are connected with stainless steel steps, in keeping with the construction materials of the house, and at the bottom of the garden is a level lawn which gives space for children to play.
From the space being an ecological desert, there is now plenty of planting to encourage insects and soften the hard landscaping.
The heart of the design, though, is the patio. The level threshold from the house to patio creates an open-plan feel indoors and out with, as Will says, “no step disconnect.”
A discreet cooking area is set behind the seating area, with Florence Grey porcelain used to clad the wall.
Clever detailing is an important element in the luxury feel of this design. Florence Grey has the natural look of limestone and Artisan Landscapes used slabs as cladding to continue the colour flow across the space. Corners were mitred and grouted with matching resin

to create the effect of a solid stone block. Elsewhere, planting pits were lined with the porcelain to minimise the visual impact of slight changes in level.
The next step
Artisan Landscapes are no stranger to London Stone products and keen followers of landscape design may remember their APL-award winning garden in Somerset which featured a steep 5.5m fall. Are all their gardens steeply sloped? “Welcome to Bristol!” laughs Will. For more information on what Will and his team can do for your garden, see Artisan Landscapes’ website.
Will’s main point of contact was Nick Rixton, one of our team of Landscape Consultants, based in our local Bristol showroom. “Nick is fantastic,” said Will. “He always goes the extra mile, is very quick to deal with things and a huge help on the project.”
For a comprehensive idea of the colours and materials that London Stone can supply for your garden project, why not pop along to one of our showrooms around the country, where you’ll find helpful staff, (including Nick!) and free refreshments? We look forward to seeing you there!

There’s something about a mature hedge that brings a sense of comfort to a garden during the cooler months of the year. They create that sense of being sheltered, protected and immersed in nature. Which is something that can never be replicated by austere fencing.
At the time of writing (October) the hedgerows being cultivated by Elveden Instant Hedge are looking particularly resplendent. The colourful foliage and jewel-like berries of our native species hedges are a joy to behold. Whilst the architectural shaping of the evergreens brings an aura of comforting regularity to the nursery. Winter pruning is currently being carried out to the tune of birdsong whilst a few late season butterflies can be seen flitting around in the wildflower margins.
Winter in the garden should never feel joyless. Even when the glorious colours of autumn have faded, outside spaces can, and should, offer a sense of wellbeing. And not just for humans, for all forms of plants and wildlife too.
A mature winter hedgerow can be a place of shelter for birds, small mammals and overwintering insects. Some species of hedge will also provide a valuable source of food for wildlife in the form of berries or fruits.
As well as sheltering creatures, a hedge can create a microclimate within an outdoor space. These natural marvels make effective windbreaks and help to protect the plants on their leeward side. This, of course also means that hedges can be used to create intimate seating areas where the sights and sounds of the winter garden can be enjoyed in relative comfort.
The answer to the question of which plant species make the best winter hedgerows can be found firstly by assessing the conditions on site. And secondly by considering the personal taste of those using the garden.
Any well trimmed hedge brings form and structure to the winter garden and can be used in conjunction with focal points to create a journey around the space. You may decide that an evergreen hedge would be best for all year round colour. Or you may prefer a deciduous hedge to highlight and celebrate seasonal changes in the garden. Perhaps your decision will be based on ecological criteria such as providing habitat for particular species. Whatever your reasoning, Elveden Instant Hedge offers a speedy solution to the problem you need to solve.
When we say “Instant” we mean Instant. Our fully mature hedges can be installed in a matter of hours with the minimum of fuss. There are no gaps between plants, these hedgerows are already knitted together and will be delivered to you with a simple numbering

system to ensure they can planted in the same order they were harvested.
At Elveden Instant Hedge, there are 17 different types of mature hedge to choose from. And each type is available in three different heights. Our team of experts are always on hand to help you make the best possible choice for your project. Even to the extent of developing a bespoke grown hedge to meet your exact needs. These amazing hedges can be installed at any time of year, which means that now is as good as time as any. Visit our website to discover more. Or better yet, contact our team to arrange a guided tour of the nursery to see for yourself the majesty of our hedgerows in autumn and winter.

Waterscapes Ltd shares critical seasonal care guidelines as UK landscapes face debris and temperature challenges.
As autumn conditions intensify across the UK, water feature specialists are sharing essential maintenance steps to prevent costly winter damage and protect landscape infrastructure investments. The combination of falling leaves, dropping temperatures, and changing water chemistry creates unique challenges that demand immediate attention from facilities managers and landscape contractors.
“Autumn represents a critical transition period for water features,” said Ed Harwood, Maintenance Contracts Manager of water feature specialists Waterscapes Ltd. “Left unmanaged, this season’s combination of organic debris and cooling water can trigger equipment failures, structural damage, and costly water quality issues that become apparent too late to prevent.”

The guidance comes as property managers prepare outdoor spaces for winter, when inadequate seasonal maintenance can compromise valuable landscape amenities and lead to expensive emergency repairs.
Critical Autumn Challenges
According to Waterscapes, leaf fall presents the most immediate challenge for water features. Decomposing organic matter affects water quality, clogs filtration systems, and can damage pumps if left unmanaged. Physical barriers such as netting provide essential protection, but require regular inspection and clearing during peak leaf fall periods.
“Even small amounts of debris create problems when they settle and break down,” explains Ed. “Professional maintenance schedules typically increase frequency during autumn, with some features requiring attention several times weekly to prevent filtration system damage.”

About Waterscapes Ltd
Waterscapes Ltd specialises in irrigation and bespoke water feature solutions for complex landscapes. The company provides technically reliable, sustainability-led water management systems for landscape architects, urban designers, and infrastructure teams across the UK.

The opening of the Garden, the first new green space in Midtown in decades, comes as Olayan completes the repositioning of the iconic 550 Madison Avenue office tower, New York City’s youngest landmark. Snøhetta served as design architect for the repositioning of the tower as well as landscape architect for the new Garden.
Designed by Snøhetta, the Garden is located adjacent to 550 Madison in the location of a formerly enclosed mid-block passageway. The garden is substantially larger than other local public spaces, and welcomes area workers, residents, and visitors with abundant seating, 48 trees, 200 shrubs, 6,300 bulb plants, 10,000 herbaceous understory plants, gender inclusive public restrooms, and three kiosks with food and beverage offerings
Craig Dykers, Snøhetta Founding Partner, said, “550 Madison builds
on a series of projects in Midtown, including our work in Times Square and the observatory we designed at One Vanderbilt, that infuse the public realm with a sense of openness, wonder, and freedom. Like many New Yorkers, we yearn to connect with the outdoors, and this collaboration with Olayan offered our team an opportunity to reposition the heroic 550 Madison tower for a new age while reestablishing how the tower meets the city.” “Snøhetta’s design for the new garden transforms the streets surrounding the iconic 550 Madison building into an accessible, lavishly vegetated, and highly visible public space. A new lobby window and redesigned storefronts honor Philip Johnson’s original design. We are honored to help return this important part of Midtown to its visitors while contributing to the celebrated vibrancy of New York City,” added Michelle Delk, Partner and Landscape Architect, Snøhetta.
“The half-acre Garden at 550 Madison is a welcoming new green space, offering a lush and elegant environment at the center of New York City,” explained Erik Horvat, Managing Director of Real Estate at Olayan America. “The garden’s cutting-edge design and meticulous maintenance positions it among the most beautiful public spaces in the city, while providing a dynamic amenity to tenants of 550 Madison.”
Built around a tranquil water feature and five sections centered on different focal structures, the 21,300-square-foot garden is nearly twice the size of a previous public space in the same location. The garden’s bloom calendar is carefully timed for plant species to offer a wide range of colorful hues, from pink to purple, blue, and yellow, at different blooming dates from February to October each year.
Distinct “upland,” “lowland,” and “sheltered” garden sections feature tree-filled backdrops and shrub skirts, drawing inspiration from Northeastern mountain vegetation ranging from fine-textured and airy to thick, luxuriant foliage. Mountain Rosebay, Smooth Hydrangea, and Bottlebrush Buckeye fill the garden’s shrub skirt, with a tree assortment including Yellowwood, Sweetbay Magnolia, and River Birch. Planters host a diversity of regional native species, from Solomon’s Seal, Goatsbeard, and Black Cohosh to Coral Bell and Sword Fern. Working alongside Snøhetta on the garden was a team of leading landscape and horticulture companies, including Phyto, The Dirt Company, SiteWorks, Arup, and Adamson Associates Architects.
The 41-story, 850,000-square-foot 550 Madison began as a single-tenant headquarters for AT&T when it opened in 1984. The building’s new garden is part of a six-year effort by Olayan to reimagine the high-rise –New York City’s youngest historic landmark – with wellness initiatives, sustainability programs, and more than 30,000 square feet of luxury amenities. In addition to the garden, building improvements include a Rockwell Group-designed clublevel amenity space that promotes collaboration and creativity, including a concierge overseeing the Grand Hall, the Library, the Hearth Room, the Screening Room, and the Pool Room. The club level also includes multiple dining offerings and kitchens for events.
The state-of-the-art fitness center at 550 Madison exceeds those of many luxurious private wellness and athletic clubs, with elegant space for health classes and workouts. And a new Gensler-designed lobby creates a cathedral-like experience, full of sunlight, bronze mesh materials, rust-colored leather, and a greyscale terrazzo floor. Sunshine from a soaring 65-foot archedglass window spills light onto the building’s centerpiece artwork, “Solid Sky,” by the artist Alicja Kwade.
The 1.2-billion-year-old, 24-ton spherical installation is made of Azul do Macaubas quartzite that was quarried in Brazil before being suspended by chains from 550 Madison’s vaulted, triple-height ceiling.

Leading plumbing and drainage manufacturer Wavin has expanded its range of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) with the launch of TreeTank and PolderRoof. Designed to help cities manage surface water more effectively, the new solutions build on Wavin’s established portfolio, which already includes its AquaCell NG attenuation tanks and its end-to-end single-source stormwater management service, StormForce.
Wavin’s TreeTank system, which makes it easier to plant and grow
healthy trees in urban centres, will be on show for the first time at Public Spaces Expo in London (7th –8th October).
Lightweight and fully modular, TreeTank is installed around a planting void filled with uncompacted soil and features built-in pipework for irrigation and ventilation. The system gives roots consistent access to water, air, and nutrients while guiding growth away from roads, pavements, and underground services. It helps trees to establish faster,
supports biodiversity, and prevents costly damage to surrounding infrastructure.
Launching alongside it this Autumn, Wavin’s new PolderRoof system transforms flat underutilised rooftops into smart, water-managing green spaces.
Rainfall is captured in a horizontal attenuation layer, with sensors and connected weather data determining when to retain, reuse or safely release water. The closed-loop approach helps reduce pressure on
drainage systems, while creating valuable green roofs that improve insulation and boost biodiversity.
Martin Lambley, Senior Product Manager for Urban Climate Resilience at Wavin, said: “Extreme weather is placing our cities under growing pressure - from intense rainfall to prolonged drought. Combined with rapid urbanisation and an ageing drainage system that is no longer fit for purpose, urban areas are increasingly vulnerable to flooding and surface water risks.
“At Wavin, we are developing innovative, practical solutions that
help cities adapt. We are combining smart water management with green infrastructure to create healthier, resilient urban environments which support biodiversity. Our next-generation SuDS approach mitigates flooding and surface water risks while supporting regulation, including Biodiversity Net Gain, helping the wider built environment contribute to national sustainability goals.
“We are constantly striving to turn innovation into real-world impact. Solutions like TreeTank and PolderRoof demonstrate how practical, scalable systems can
manage water efficiently, protect infrastructure, and enhance urban green spaces - ensuring cities are better prepared for the challenges of extreme weather.”
To learn more about TreeTank and PolderRoof you can visit Wavin’s stand (P71) at the upcoming Public Spaces Expo at Excel London (7th –8th October).

For over 60 years, Civic Trees has been at the forefront of tree relocation across the UK. From introducing Europe’s first Vermeer tree spade to designing the globally renowned Newman Frame, we have consistently led the way in innovation, combining technical expertise with a genuine passion for preserving nature.
Why Relocate a Tree?
Because every tree matters. Relocating a tree isn’t simply moving it—it’s about preserving life. By saving a tree from being cut down, we protect the environment, support sustainable urban growth, and maintain the natural beauty of our surroundings. In a world where sustainability has never been more important, tree relocation is a practical and responsible way to make a lasting difference for future generations. Each tree we relocate continues to provide shade, clean air, and aesthetic value, contributing to healthier, more vibrant communities.
At Civic Trees, every relocation begins with a thorough assessment of the tree’s health, size, and root system. Our team carries out a detailed site-specific risk assessment to ensure the entire operation is carried out safely and efficiently. Using specialist equipment, we carefully lift the tree with minimal disturbance to its roots, transport it securely, and replant it in its new location. From the moment a tree is uprooted to the ongoing care it receives after replanting, our skilled team ensures it adapts successfully and thrives for many years to come.
We believe that a tree is only as healthy as the care it receives. Through meticulous handling, expert planting techniques, and dedicated aftercare, Civic Trees safeguards every tree as if it were our own.

Our unwavering commitment to staff training, safety, and technical excellence means our clients can trust that every relocation is performed to the highest standards.
By choosing to relocate rather than remove trees, we preserve nature’s beauty while supporting sustainable growth in urban and rural communities alike. At Civic Trees, we
take pride in treating every tree as the most prized asset it is, ensuring it continues to enhance landscapes and enrich lives for generations.

As Scotland’s eighth newest city (2022), Dunfermline was the birthplace of King Charles 1 and once served as the ancient capital of Scotland. Over recent years the city has become more popular with house prices increasing and investment in new residential developments.
As part of the Dunfermline Eastern Expansion, Taylor Wimpey have built around a hundred homes, a mix of 3, 4, and 5-bedroom houses, as well as affordable housing units, situated around Macpherson and MacCallum Avenues.
Although Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is not mandatory in Scotland just yet, the National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4), focuses on ‘significant biodiversity enhancements’ for major developments. And any urban greening, particularly street trees, plays a vital role.
Although new developments have modern storm drains and sewers, unlike the old, woefully inadequate Victorian-era systems in the city centres, it is still important to attenuate rainwater, and subsequent runoff, diverting it from gushing straight down the drains. Trees are highly efficient at doing this, both through their root network, and leaf canopy. Add to this their ability to store carbon, capture airborne particulates, and provide habitat for birds and insects, and the value of trees to our neighbourhoods cannot be denied.
Green-tech Involvement
Advance Construction (Scotland) have been offering groundworks and civil engineering expertise throughout Scotland for over

twenty-five years. They have worked with Green-tech for over ten of those years across various projects. ACS approached Green-tech to price up twenty-one tree pits throughout the new Taylor-Wimpey development, using the TreeParker® tree pit support system.
Having been used in mainland Europe for the past twelve years or more, on high-profile projects such as the pavements around the Eiffel Tower, and Rotterdam’s main boulevard, Coolsingle, TreeParker® works by supporting the paving above a tree pit, whether used for pedestrian or vehicular traffic. In doing this, it protects the soil within the tree pit from becoming compacted. This enables the landscaper to use a soft, friable, organic topsoil for the tree to grow in, rather than having to make do with a less organic, structural tree sand.
Unlike similar systems, it has several distinct advantages. The heavy-duty, reinforced legs are available in six height options from the factory: 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, and 1500mm. This gives a previously unheard-of adaptability with depth options. From a contractor’s point of view, it means there is never any need to stack two units to achieve a depth over 600mm, saving installation time and money. The other major advantage is that
there are no side walls to get in the way of utilities, new or existing. By having smooth, rounded legs rather than side walls, the units can easily straddle or work around service pipes and lines.
There was a mix of tree pits across the site, mostly single trees, but also three double tree pits in the central section of MacCallum Avenue. To finish off the installations, Greentech supplied cast-iron Newdale tree grilles, along with Wharfdale tree guards, to protect the trees from any vehicular contact. Grilles are an ideal way to give a smart, longlasting finish to a tree pit, whilst allowing air and water access into the rooting area.
In total, twenty-one TreeParker® tree pits were installed, each having Mona Relief irrigation rings and cast aluminium filler caps, as well as underground anchor systems. With it being vital to the health of any tree or planting scheme, Green-tech delivered a total of 260 tonnes of Green-tree British Standard subsoil and Geocell topsoil to site over a staggered period as required.
Stuart Mcneill, Managing Quantity Surveyor for Advance Construction (Scotland) comments, “We have always found Green-tech to provide excellent service. They deliver what they say, when they say they will.

We found the TreeParker® system to be surprisingly quick and simple to install, and we look forward to working with it again.”

“Like the fictive wall in front of the stage serving as a separation between the actors and the audience, the installation aims to arouse the public’s curiosity through the implementation of a monumental mesh playing on the perception of space.”
An immersive and monumental installation takes over Place ClaudeLéveillée. The Fourth Wall, the third landmark of the Métamorphoses créatives initiative, offers a unique experience that blurs the lines between art, architecture, and public space. Designed to spark curiosity, this dynamic structure invites passersby to become active participants in a collective, yearround experience.
Launched in 2019 by the City of Laval, the Métamorphoses créatives initiative aims to transform the Montmorency district into a major cultural hub by integrating art, architecture, and design into urban development.
Taking inspiration from both theatre and the street performance, NÓS presents an installation that references the famous “fourth
wall” that traditionally separates performers from the audience. Here, that wall becomes an open, curved, and dynamic structure designed to stimulate curiosity, encourage interaction, and transform the public square into a living stage.
Designed as a modular structure with interchangeable components, the system consists of steel masts and curved rails from which translucent orange vinyl strips are suspended. Commonly used in commercial and industrial settings for their cold-shielding properties, these strips also serve as effective barriers against noise and dust, particularly relevant in areas near upcoming construction sites.
Conceived as a space for gathering, observation, and spontaneous expression, the installation serves as a true artistic and community meeting point, rooted in the heart of a transforming neighborhood. Its modular system offers a sustainable solution, adaptable to the site’s evolving needs, or reusable for future installations.
Within this immersive structure, raw-wood urban furniture completes the layout: wooden beams painted bright orange at their base are transformed into warm, convivial seats. The orange color, part of Métamorphoses créatives’ visual identity, reinforces the association between culture, nature, and urban transformation.
This striking curtain filters the space, reflects the movements of passersby, hosts public performances, and transforms the site through shifting perspectives and evolving uses. This dynamic structure sparks curiosity, nurtures creativity, and invites the public to become active participants in a shared, year-round experience.
The Fourth Wall is a temporary yet symbolic artwork: it accompanies the renewal of downtown Laval, while offering a vibrant public space for the next 4 to 6 years where everyone can be either a spectator or a performer in a collective scene open to the imagination.

In November 2015, Heavitree Brewery redeveloped the old George & Dragon pub in Dartmouth, to a new destination venue, including a large (~200m2) paved beer garden, with Black Limestone slabs and Granite setts for the main entrance & drop kerb to the road.
Following issues requiring extensive underpinning of the rear building elevation, the project was significantly delayed, but the brewery still wanted to hold the VIP Opening in November, ahead of the busy Christmas period. As a result, they needed to complete the paving jointing within just 2 days to allow access. Fortunately, NCC Streetscape had the solution, and they selected the unique GftK vdw 850plus paving jointing mortar for two key reasons:
• Fast installation - the only truly wet-weather paving jointing and can be applied quickly and easily in the cold and wet November weather, even in the pouring rain!
• Performance and Durabilityhardens quickly to a tough, durable joint that can accommodate frequent heavy pedestrian traffic, frequent spillages of food and drinks, as well as being fully resistant to de-icing salts in Winter, and frequent jet-washing, daily in Summer!
By using GftK vdw 850plus, the jointing was applied, completed and surfaces cleaned, despite the weather, and in less than 4 hours. It then hardened overnight, ready for the VIP Opening Night. Now, ~10 years later in Summer 2025, the daily jet-washing cleaning continues, with the joints still looking good, proving that GftK vdw 850plus is a very durable and sustainable choice.

• Keep jointing in cold (> 3oC)
• Keep jointing in wet weather
• No delays - No waiting to joint
• No concerns over water in joints
• No waiting to clean off
• No washboy required
• No haze & No efflorescence +
• Easy wet-slurry application
• Very high flow & self-compacting
• No tooling or finishing required
• Fast curing & hardening +
• No shrinkage cracks
• Highest joint performance
• Optimum strengths & flexibility
• Fully resistant to traffic, de-icing salts, and jet-washing

Pictorial Meadows are committed to increasing biodiversity in gardens and urban communities. They believe embracing the beauty of wildflower meadows is not just about creating an aestheticallypleasing environment, but also about fostering a lasting and harmonious coexistence with nature.
Pictorial Meadows Difference
With over 20 years of dedicated research and development in partnership with the University of Sheffield, Pictorial Meadows are committed to creating naturebased solutions that are proven and reliable. Recognising that societal acceptance is crucial for the longterm success of such planting styles, their goal is to make biodiversityrich wildflower meadows accessible and appealing to all.
Pictorial Meadows’ annual seed mixes are an excellent starting point when wanting to increase biodiversity in projects. Not only are they affordable and easy to implement, but they yield quickwins and vibrant results. The burst
of colour is often a talking point for people whilst also acting as a magnet for insects and pollinators, enriching the local ecosystem. These annual seed-sown meadows can be a very rewarding introduction into the world of colour and biodiversity, paving the way for more extensive and longer-term planting practices.
If you want to remove the complexity of growing from seed, Pictorial Meadows’ pre-grown wildflower turf simplifies this process as all the professional horticultural growing has been done in advance, providing an instant and long-term planting solution. But it doesn’t have to be a distinct choice between perennial seed and turf – a combination of both can be employed by carefully thinking about sightlines and planting densities. Strategically placing wildflower turf front-of-view in a planting area whilst allowing perennial seed to establish behind will give quicker and higher flower densities in the foreground, and slower and lower densities at the rear.
For those seeking the highest levels of biodiversity with minimal effort and instant results, Pictorial Meadows’ perennial turf range is the go-to solution. Offering various mixes tailored to different location requirements, this product contains over thirty different species that boast long-season flowering and exceptional winter interest. The ease of implementation, coupled with the visual spectacle and ecological benefits, makes their perennial turf an ideal choice for all types of projects. Even over winter, biodiversity is being supported; leaving the dead flower heads standing over winter benefits not just biodiversity in the garden, but also local wildlife by providing a habitat for invertebrates and a resource of oil-rich seeds for winterfeeding birds.
In addition to having won awards for sustainability and biodiversity, Pictorial Meadows’ customers are delighted with results. After installing the ‘Classic’ mix at Clumber Park, Head Gardener Dene Wood talked about how the increase in pollinator numbers was not only evident to visitors, but also celebrated. He humorously remarked, “If only those extra visitors (bees and insects) counted in our visitor numbers.”
Pictorial Meadows is part of The Green Estate Community Interest Company and offers a range of designer meadow seed mixes and turf, alongside a professional meadow creation, management and consultation service. To find out more, visit www.pictorialmeadows.co.uk

Lawn scarifying is the process of removing thatch and moss - the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris that builds up on your lawn. Over time, this layer blocks water, air, and nutrients from reaching the soil and roots, leading to poor lawn health.
Using a scarifier helps aerate the soil, stimulate new grass growth, and improve overall lawn drainage and resilience.
When should you scarify your lawn?
The best time to scarify a lawn is during periods of active growth:
• Spring (April to May)
• Autumn (September to October)
• Avoid scarifying in summer (especially during droughts) or winter when grass is dormant
How to scarify
Follow these steps to get the best results when scarifying your lawn:
• Mow the grass short
• Set up your scarifier
• Scarify in two directions
• Adjust blade depth as needed
• Collect debris
Your lawn might look rough - but it will recover quickly if you follow up with the right care:
• Rake thoroughly and remove all debris
• Overseed and apply grass seed to bare patches for even regrowth
• Top dress by spreading a thin layer of compost or topsoil
• Water well and keep the lawn moist to support new seed growth
• Fertilise by applying a balanced lawn feed to speed up recovery

Best scarifying equipment
Manual rakes can work for small patches, but for best results, use a scarifier.

In an industry dedicated to creating and maintaining green spaces, it’s time we look beneath the surface — literally. For years, plastic netting has been a standard in turf and wildflower production, used to stabilise rolls during growth and handling. Yet these nets, while practical, do not biodegrade. They linger in soil for decades, fragmenting into microplastics and threaten the very environments we aim to enhance.
At Lindum Turf, sustainability isn’t a buzzword; it’s a principle that guides everything we do. Our turf is entirely plastic-free, consisting purely of roots and soil, ensuring a natural and environmentally friendly product. For our wildflower products, we use innovative plant-based mats, also 100% plastic free, that provide the same structural integrity and ease of handling that landscapers rely on
but break down harmlessly in the soil once established. The result is healthy grass or wildflowers, strong root systems, and no lingering plastic waste.
Transitioning to plastic-free turf hasn’t been without challenges. Researching, testing, and implementing new materials requires time and investment. But as the landscaping sector increasingly values ecological responsibility, this innovation is essential. Clients, contractors, and specifiers now expect environmentally conscious solutions at every stage of a project, and plastic-free turf offers both ecological benefits and a competitive edge.
We see this as part of a broader movement toward sustainable landscaping. From plant pots to protective materials, every choice we make has lasting consequences

for soil health and the wider environment. By removing plastic netting, Lindum Turf is demonstrating that it’s possible to combine performance with sustainability, creating products that meet professional standards while reducing environmental impact.
True sustainability goes beyond the surface. It requires careful thought, innovation, and accountability from every player in the industry.
At Lindum Turf, we’re proud to be taking steps that help landscapers, clients, and communities enjoy beautiful, resilient green spaces without compromising the health of the soil beneath them.

Our Species-Rich Turf is a harmonious blend of wildflowers and grasses, the 80/20 mix is carefully cultivated into a plastic-free, moisture-retentive mat, creating an instant biodiverse haven. This unique turf can be maintained like a traditional lawn with regular mowing, or left to grow naturally to encourage the flourishing of diverse plant species.

SB Plant Fix Energises the soil with beneficial Bacillus strains to build stronger roots, improve nutrient uptake, and enhance natural turf resilience.
SB Naturamin Plus Boosts recovery with amino acids and peptides that energise roots, extend microbial activity, and keep turf performing under stress.
Together they naturally help turf stay greener, tougher, and quicker to recover all winter long and beyond.

Flower Power was a concept that emerged during the late 1960s and early 1970s associated with a nonviolent, peaceful approach to social and political change.
Meadowmat Birds & Bees has been all about the power of flowers for the last ten years. It is ten years since we introduced it to the landscaping world.
It is a key part of our BNG offering and can be seen as part of a peaceful approach in horticulture emphasising greater harmony with nature, supporting pollinators and offering an alternative to traditional lawns and groundcover.
It was introduced because our countryside has suffered a dramatic reduction in wild flowers which has had a knock-on effect for insects, birds and pollinators.
Meadowmat Birds & Bees was and is, one of the ways we try to redress the balance.

Corten Steel has become a defining material in contemporary landscape and architectural design, admired for its strength, resilience, and distinct visual character. Also known as weathering steel, Corten refers to a family of steels that develop a stable, self-protective rust layer (patina) when left exposed outdoors. This natural oxidation process prevents further corrosion and creates the material’s rich, earthy finish, which continues to evolve with time.
The history of Corten Steel dates back over a century. Research in the 1910s explored alloying steel with copper to improve weather resistance, and by 1933, the United States Steel Corporation had patented Cor-Ten®, named for its corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Originally used in industrial and structural applications, Corten Steel’s unique combination of durability and
organic appeal soon captured the attention of designers and architects seeking to bring its natural texture and warmth into public and private spaces alike.
Today, Corten Steel is celebrated for its ability to harmonise with materials such as wood, concrete, glass, and planting — making it an increasingly popular choice in contemporary landscape design. Its evolving tones provide contrast and balance, bridging the gap between the built and natural environment. Building on this legacy, Lumena Lights introduces two exceptional Corten Steel lighting solutions: Ember and Litecharga. The Ember is a striking 0.6m 240V bollard light with a distinctive ‘rusty’ effect appearance. Crafted from genuine Corten Steel, its patina forms a protective, self-healing layer that enhances durability while delivering a timeless, weathered aesthetic. The Ember’s warm
industrial look complements both modern and natural landscapes, adding character and depth to any outdoor setting.
Its larger, solar-powered counterpart, the Litecharga Corten Steel, stands at 0.8m and shares the same robust construction and rustic finish. Combining sustainable design with high performance, this bollard features a CCT switch for selecting between warm or daylight white light, offering up to 24 hours of illumination from full charge. With an IP65 rating, the Litecharga is fully protected against dust and water ingress - ideal for residential and commercial landscapes.
Together, the Ember and Litecharga embody the perfect balance of artistry, innovation, and sustainability. By pairing the timeless appeal of Corten Steel with modern lighting technology, Lumena Lights continues to illuminate outdoor spaces with solutions as enduring as they are beautiful.

Located in Ratho, just 25 minutes from Edinburgh city centre, Lost Shore is the world’s first inland surf resort and home to Europe’s largest wave pool.
Lighting played a sensitive role in shaping the resort’s identity. It needed to enhance the natural landscape, complement the architecture, and create a safe, welcoming atmosphere after dark. Engaged by landscape architect HarrisonStevens, Thorn Lighting delivered a scheme that balances performance, aesthetics and sustainability.
A key challenge was proximity to Edinburgh Airport, demanding rigorous control of upward light to avoid interference with flight paths. The woodland setting also required dark-sky sensitivity, preserving the night environment while revealing key architectural and landscape elements.
Thorn specified a tailored palette to meet these constraints. Caelon S RGBW Bluetooth spotlights illuminate the dramatic quarry faces surrounding the lagoon. Typically used for bridge and façade applications, these aimable
luminaires highlight the rugged rock formations with tight optical control to minimise spill and glare— important for night surfers and nearby habitats.
In arrivals and parking areas, Urba lanterns (IDA Dark Sky Approved, 3000 K) provide comfortable, uniform illumination with minimal uplight, aligning with the resort’s sustainability goals.
Across multi-use zones, Contrast floodlights on multi-head columns provide Bluetooth-controlled flexibility. Scene setting enables

different lighting moods for events and quieter evening periods, keeping the resort visually dynamic while maintaining agreed illumination envelopes.
This approach: precise optics, targeted distribution and smart control, reduces energy use by trimming output where full illumination isn’t needed and by limiting spill light. The result supports the wider environmental strategy at Lost Shore, which prioritises habitat creation and a strong dark-sky ethos across the country-park setting.

Debbie Harrison, Associate Director at HarrisonStevens, said: “Lighting the Lost Shore Surf Resort was both exciting and challenging. Its proximity to Edinburgh Airport and situation within a country park setting were the key factors which informed the lighting solutions. The resulting design is compliant and respectful of its surroundings. Thorn worked with our brief, the client’s budget and the design team requirements to create an atmospheric and sustainable scheme.”

As the first inland surf resort of its kind, Lost Shore is set to become a major tourism and sporting destination. Thorn’s scheme helps define the resort’s character— enhancing safety and atmosphere while supporting long-term sustainability.

With the launch of the Kress KR237E, robotic mowing technology has taken a bold step forward, bringing a professional-grade solution to the world of golf courses and large sports turf fields. This next-generation mower is designed not just to automate turf maintenance but to elevate its quality, efficiency, and consistency.
The KR237E boasts a top mowing speed of 1.0 m/s—significantly faster than typical robotic mowers—allowing it to cover expansive grounds quickly without compromising precision. Its enhanced 110W cutting motor, a 60% increase in power, enables it to slice cleanly through dense, heavy turf, maintaining immaculate playing conditions even in the most demanding areas.
Where this machine truly shines is in its adaptability. With a cutting height range of 10 to 60mm, the KR237E is versatile enough to manage both manicured fairways and tougher roughs with ease. Its improved cutting height adjustment system eliminates jamming issues, ensuring uninterrupted operation and consistent results throughout its run.
What sets the KR237E apart is its all-in-one capability—one machine is powerful and versatile enough to mow an entire golf hole, from fairway to rough, without the need for a separate fairway kit. This reduces the need for multiple machines and streamlines turf maintenance logistics.
The KR237E isn’t just a new mower— it’s a smart investment in efficiency and turf health. For golf course superintendents and sports turf managers, it offers a reliable, highperformance solution that meets the evolving demands of modern groundskeeping. With Kress’s latest innovation, the future of large-scale robotic mowing is not just arriving— it’s already here.
