ARCHI-TECTONICS’ LONDON SOLAR HOUSE DELIVERS COMPACT

RICHNESS AS A PROTOTYPE FOR HIGH-DENSITY URBAN LIVING

Archi-Tectonics expanded a century-old brick townhouse in the heart of London into a modern home that is double its original size for a family of four. The New York design firm turned the unique historic character of the existing 2-story solid masonry structure, as well as its compact neighborhood setting, into a design opportunity.

The 2,250 square-feet London Solar House is designed with the notion that ‘small is beautiful’, something that can be traced back to the early modernists of Europe and America who used this as a premise in their search for the most ergonomic and frugal housing unit. While their solutions leaned towards what is just enough to live comfortably, Archi-Tectonics have maximized richness and complexity to create a 4-dimensional interplay of spaces linked across two eras in time and intricately crafted with shifts in movement, perspective, and materiality. The house’s manifold attachments to the adjacent structures and surrounding vegetation

served as the guide to the proposed volumetric extrusions that establish an otherness within the existing context.

The original structure is left intact to maintain the largely opaque building edges and serve as the foundational base for the new intervention. It is treated as the structural core, off of which a multifaceted roof extension enveloping an additional story and other hovering projections emerges. The intersection between the folded zinc-and-glass envelope and the densely packed program within generates several distinctly-formed apertures

such as the pyramidal skylight in the kitchen, a glass slit in the living room exposing what used to be a narrow rear yard, and a fully glazed window revealing the panoramic view of the streetscape below, framed by an old-growth tree. The terrace at the roof level extends the kitchen and dining room toward the exterior and offers a moment of outdoor respite amidst the surrounding foliage and neighborhood roofscape. The roof is lined with fully integrated PV panels that provide the almost offthe-grid building with baseline electricity sufficient to run heat pumps, hot water supply, lighting, as well as a 13kW Tesla battery to charge an electric car.

At the heart of the building is a custom-built, winding stair that connects the entrance floor with the double-height living area above and the open kitchen-and-dining on the topmost level. The organic and fluid geometry of this solid-steel helix form connects all public areas of the house in one continuous sweep, thus creating a sculptural vortex of daylit space. Here, density and richness condense together to create a singular object that is both extremely efficient and strikingly beautiful. This stair embodies Archi-Tectonics’ unique sensibility as architects to marry design intelligence, manufacturing expertise, and dynamic formoptimization to go beyond mere problem-solving.

The sculptural corporality and rich textures of the interiors are a deliberate departure from the typically rationalist and frugal effect of compact dwellings. High-contrast black raw wood cladding and cabinetry, textured stone surfaces, and brass mosaics are highlighted by soft glowing light coves. Precious glass pendants elevate the atmosphere indoors, while complementing the organically shaped wood furniture and natural wool rugs.

FIRE TESTING AND THE ROAD FROM BS TO EN

In recent years, the UK construction sector has moved from historic British Standards (BS) toward European (EN) test methods and classification systems as part of the process to strengthen fire performance standards and legislation. This transition creates a more structured framework for demonstrating performance, with clearer links between what is tested in the laboratory and what is ultimately installed on site. True assurance depends not only on how products are tested, but on how results are interpreted and how far those results can legitimately be applied.

TRANSITIONING FROM SINGLE TEST RESULTS TO DEFINED APPLICATIONS

Historically, fire testing has been conducted as a oneoff event: build a sample system, test it, record the result. The difficulty came when applying that result to products of different sizes or configurations. The boundaries were not always obvious.

The transition from historic BS 476 methods to BS EN test standards and classification systems addresses this. It builds rules for practical application directly into the framework of standards, so performance can be fully defined and traceable.

The results of a fire resistance test such as BS EN 1364-1 (which replaces BS 476-22) determines the tested system performance to BS EN 13501-2 (for example EI 240 – 240 minutes integrity and 240 minutes insulation fire resistance). However, this classification is just the start.

DIRECT FIELD OF APPLICATION (DIAP).

DIAP rules are written directly into the test standard. They define specific, limited variations that are automatically covered by the test result without further assessment. Depending on the standard and construction, DIAP may permit defined adjustments such as reductions in size, increases in certain component thicknesses, or dimensional changes permitted by the test standard. DIAP provides a clearly defined starting point. It ensures that every test comes with an inherent, published scope of application.

EXTENDED APPLICATION (EXAP).

EXAP standards provide a structured, rulesbased method for extending fire test results using recognised technical principles. EXAP is carried out in accordance with the relevant EXAP standard, which may be supported by:

• EN extended application standards

• EN product standards

• European Assessment Documents (EADs)

• Relevant European Commission Decisions or delegated acts

• EN 13238 (conditioning procedures)

• CEN/TS 15117 and other sector-specific technical specifications

The process typically follows one of several recognised methods:

1. Direct reference to product technical specifications where extension rules are already defined

2. Relationship-based assessment, demonstrating how performance varies with defined parameters

3. Experimental or empirical programmes, using additional test evidence to map performance changes

4. Recognised calculation methods where validated models are available

The objective is to ensure that any extension remains technically justified and consistent with established European methodology.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE?

The vast majority of leaks in toilets are caused by a faulty flush valve; due to its design (having a joint below the water line) over time most flush valves will leak due to debris or limescale building up under the sealing washer, preventing it from sealing properly & causing water to trickle into the pan. This is in stark contrast to a toilet syphon that will NOT leak even in failure mode.

Since 2001 when the Water Regulations were

changed to allow flush valves into the UK for the first time, sales of flush valves have been on the increase, this is in part due to its button operated mechanism that many users prefer ascetically over a handle that activates a syphon.

SWIMMING POOL GLAZING IN NORTH YORKSHIRE

Old High Mill is a private leisure wing and pool hall extension to an existing home near Bedale that showcases swimming pool glazing in North Yorkshire.

The new glazed wing brings together slim sliding openings to the terrace, large-format structural glass walls, a series of frameless rooflights and carefully detailed aluminium windows to create a bright, durable and low-maintenance pool environment finished in RAL 7021.

The main pool elevation uses ultra-slim sliding doors to give wide, easy access for poolside circulation and summer ventilation. Selected assemblies were specified with a marine grade coating to withstand the corrosive atmosphere typical of chlorinated spaces. Thresholds, drainage and perimeter details were coordinated to keep lines clean while managing splash water.

Beyond the sliding openings, fixed structural glazing creates expansive picture windows with crisp glass-to-glass junctions that align with the roof geometry so the pool hall reads as a single, clear volume. Vertical panes are tied into the roof glazing with silicone jointed connections, maintaining an uninterrupted sightline from water level up into the sky, for this swimming pool glazing in North Yorkshire.

Daylight is brought deep into the plan by a ribbon of frameless rooflights arranged as single and multi pane runs. The roof glazing was detailed for pool specific performance, with warm edge spacers, robust perimeter seals and concealed support to

manage humidity and reduce condensation risk while keeping the interior evenly daylit.

Elsewhere, Sieger HD aluminium windows provide controlled ventilation and emergency escape where required. Hardware and hinges were selected for resistance to chlorine, and opening lights incorporate trickle ventilation and cills to suit the pool specification without adding visual clutter to the elevations.

Quality and durability measures were built into the package. Key oversized panes were heat soak tested to reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage, and crane lifts were used to place units safely without compromising edge quality. All visible aluminium was finished in RAL 7021 for a coherent exterior that complements the mill context and surrounding landscape. The finished pool hall is a clear example of swimming pool glazing in North Yorkshire, combining transparency, resilience and precise detailing.

CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK LAUNCHES NEW INSTALLATION SERIES: ‘DESIGN INTERVENTIONS’ AND EXPANDED CDW AWARDS

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) is pleased to announce it will be returning to London’s EC1 on the 19 – 21 May 2026. Marking the 15th anniversary of this global design festival, a new curated series of large-scale installations will be launched called Design Interventions.

Following a call-out from CDW to emerging and established designers and architects for ideas for innovative structures, the strongest submissions will be installed across Clerkenwell. These will encourage interaction and spark conversations about materials and the built environment, while activating EC1 with striking, immersive moments throughout the festival.

In addition, a major highlight this year will be the expanded CDW Awards, presented with the digital design magazine Design Milk. The CDW Awards will not only celebrate the best new products and innovations but also the disruptors, dreamers and ‘doers of design’.

DESIGN INTERVENTIONS: AN OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT AND CONNECT

These site-specific, interactive installations, created by the design and architecture community, will

appear in the parks, streets and green spaces of Clerkenwell, as well as in the festival’s venues. Many of these pop-up structures will provide a place to sit, reflect and connect with others while exploring structural and material concepts.

One of the many Design Interventions selected for this year will be on Clerkenwell Green. The Fountain of Technicolour Beads (pictured above), has been created by Hong Kong-based multi-disciplinary studio One Bite Design. This immersive terrazzo installation integrates spatial design with social awareness by focusing on Colour Vision Deficiency (CVD). And next to St James’ Church, The CrinkleCrankle Bench (pictured above) will take pride of place. This series of half crescent benches crafted from natural stone bricks is designed by architectural practice StudioFolk.

EXPANDED CDW AWARDS AND NEW VENUES

Haberdashers’ Hall, will be a new addition to CDW’s list of spectacular venues. Known as The Luxury Edit during the show, this new venue will be hosting the CDW Awards ceremony on Tuesday 19th May, presented in partnership with Design Milk. Following a strong debut last year, the awards will once again celebrate furniture, lighting, materials and interior solutions that are shaping the future of design. New categories will focus on the individuals, teams and ideas challenging conventions and celebrating the creatives driving design forward today. In addition, as well as being home to a cluster of high-end Italian design brands, The Luxury Edit will host the talks series Design Meets featuring industry bodies, leading brands and industry experts.

A ‘living’ outdoor installation, The Pulse of Becoming, will animate the space outside The Luxury Edit. This Design Intervention, created by recent graduates Musab Umair, Amruta Ramesh Pullawar and Sharath Binu John who are based in Portsmouth, explores the cyclical nature of death, rebirth and life. Chia seeds embedded in two opposing crescent shells will sprout during the festival, turning bare surfaces green.

The Museum of the Order of St John above St John’s Gate (originally built in 1504) is one of the great hidden historical treasures of London and is another new venue for the festival. The atmospheric space, steeped in history, will be the temporary home to INTERIORS FROM SPAIN, a striking platform for contemporary Spanish design produced by Londonbased design journal Disegno.

Material Source Studio, which showcases products and materials for architects, interior designers and property professionals, and Workplace on the Square outside The Zetter hotel, a platform for design brands catering to offices, are two new additions to CDW’s wide range of venues for 2026. Office design brands will also be exhibiting at Workplace at Goldsmiths’ at The Goldsmiths’ Centre which returns as a festival venue this year.

RETURNING VENUES, NEW INSTALLATIONS

St Bartholomew the Great once again becomes the Church of Design, this year’s venue for the coveted Conversations at Clerkenwell programme curated by PR and Brand Consultant Katie Richardson, which will include discussions with leading and emerging designers on topical subjects. Dulux, this year’s sponsor for Conversations at Clerkenwell, is launching a student-focused competition to design the backdrop of the talks stage using a palette of ontrend colours.

Roche Bobois, DEDON and MAGIS Spa are among the many leading international brands exhibiting at the Church of Design, and CONFLUENCE (pictured above), a monumental origami-inspired installation by Fung+Bedford, will be suspended from the ceiling of the 900-year-old Grade I listed medieval church.

The House of Detention returns as the host of Light, showcasing a selection of exciting local and global lighting brands. Visitors will be greeted at the entrance with Loom Light, a 3D-printed light

sculpture drawing on the optical language of Op Art, designed by MIMStudios, AI Build and SEAM Design. [d]arc thoughts, an enlightening series of talks curated by [d]arc media, also returns.

A HIDDEN CENTRAL LONDON SANCTUARY

This striking maisonette apartment in Fulham was reimagined from the ground up by interior and architectural design studio, Pfeiffer Design. A spacepacked with potential, the original layout lacked both flow and functionality.

The knowledgeable design team reconfigured the interior to optimise light, space and everyday living, as well as adding a new upper floor leading to a hidden rooftop terrace – a rare find in the heart of the city.

A beautiful representation of how bespoke design works best in tight spaces, the team centred on intelligent spatial planning by moving the staircase, streamlining each room and creating valuable square footage throughout. The result is a home that is perfectly suited to the needs of the homeowner, with quality craftsmanship and premium materials at the forefront.

KITCHEN

The kitchen is a warm and light-filled heart of the home, where craftsmanship and quiet luxury come together beautifully. Hand-finished frameless wood cabinetry forms the backbone of the design, enhanced with fluted detailing that adds texture and interest. The premium stone splashback and

waterfall worktop on the island is a truly unique design element, drawing the eye in but also providing space for bar stools.

Carefully integrated in-built wall storage provides additional space for crockery and a breakfast nook – without encroaching on the room – paired with glass-front cabinetry which helps with the feeling of openness. The warm wood cabinetry is complemented by modern oak chevron flooring, allowing the kitchen to seamlessly flow into the open-plan living area.

OPEN-PLAN LIVING AREA

A versatile and layered space, the open-plan living area balances openness with moments of retreat. A bespoke sliding barn door between the living area and the kitchen offers the homeowner the flexibility to connect the spaces for entertaining or close them off for a more intimate setting. A custom-made media unit provides generous storage and the dining area is thoughtfully positioned within the large bay widow to make the most of the light.

Tucked quietly off the main living space, a compact home office offers a practical yet refined workspace with plenty of bespoke storage and natural light. Throughout, the warm wood tones

of the flooring and kitchen are echoed in the media and office areas to ensure visual continuity and softness – while tailored window treatments introduce an additional layer of softness.

BEDROOMS

The two bedrooms are calm, restorative sanctuaries, united by a shared palette of soft neutrals warmed with subtle undertones of cream and greige. Gentle accents of pink and blue are layered through colourful accessories and soft furnishings, while bespoke wardrobe storage in each bedroom provides generous, tailored space for clothing –ensuring elegant and uncluttered living. In the main bedroom, the team transformed a small corner into a dedicated vanity area, complete with a floating tabletop and stool.

BATHROOMS

Serene and spa-like, the bathrooms combine a neutral palette with rich, statement detailing that create a sense of quiet indulgence. Soft whites and layered stone surfaces with dramatic veining form a timeless backdrop, complemented with fluted elements across both wall tiles, a statement sink and a sculptural bath. Dark bronze and matt black finishes introduce contrasting depth and sophistication, giving a contemporary edge to the interiors.

The result feels both calming and refined, balancing subtle luxury with enduring elegance.

PRIVATE ROOFTOP

The defining feature of this project is the addition of the private rooftop terrace which sits above the London skyline. After the challenging task of gaining planning permission, the creation of this new upper floor included an automated roof hatch accessed via a newly stacked staircase which elegantly connects the outdoor to the indoor. Combining timber decking, a comfortable lounge area and lush greenery, the result is a versatile and generous space for hosting all year round.

Working with a trusted team of architects, structural engineers, contractors, specialist trades and experts in bespoke joinery and upholstery, Pfeiffer Design managed the entire project from planning to execution – ensuring a seamless experience for the homeowner.

A PERMEABLE DRIVEWAY DESIGNED FOR A FLOOD-SENSITIVE RIVERSIDE HOME IN DEVON

Beauxfort’s Gravelrings were specified by VESP Architects for the driveway at Stipperstones, a contemporary home set on the banks of the River Exe in Devon.

Designed to sit lightly within its landscape, the project required a permeable gravel driveway solution that could deliver SuDS-compliant performance while maintaining a natural, design-led finish suited to its sensitive riverside setting. As the first point of arrival, the driveway plays a key role in setting the tone for the wider scheme, defined by a calm, natural materiality that reflects the surrounding landscape.

The Stipperstones home is a modern bungalow elevated on stilts, carefully positioned to maximise views across the River Exe while minimising its impact on the surrounding landscape. Within this context, the driveway formed a key part of the external works, both functionally and visually.

Given the site’s flood-sensitive conditions, a permeable surface was essential to support sustainable drainage. At the same time, the material palette was carefully considered to reflect the tones and textures of the local environment. The driveway needed to sit comfortably within this palette, complementing the architecture and its natural surroundings, while creating a sense of ease on approach.

Gravelrings were selected to provide a load-bearing, permeable gravel driveway solution suitable for residential use. The system stabilises loose

aggregate, preventing movement and rutting while allowing water to drain naturally through the surface. This creates a firm, dependable surface for day-to-day use, without losing the character of a gravel finish.

Installed with a warm golden 14–20mm gravel, the driveway aligns with the project’s wider material palette, echoing the natural hues of the surrounding landscape. This creates a cohesive and understated finish, ensuring the driveway integrates seamlessly with both the house and its setting.

The completed driveway delivers a robust and visually consistent surface that responds directly to the challenges of the site. It provides effective surface water management in a flood-sensitive location, while maintaining the long-term stability required for vehicular access.

Just as importantly, the natural appearance of the gravel allows the driveway to sit comfortably within its surroundings, reinforcing the overall design approach. The result is a solution that performs reliably while sitting naturally within the landscape, creating a composed and welcoming arrival to the home.

FLAT PLATE SWITCHES IN OLD PROPERTIES WHEN YOU DON’T WANT TO DIG OUT THE WALLS

Upgrading electrics in older properties often presents a familiar challenge: shallow back boxes concealed behind thick plaster, solid masonry or uneven walls. For owners of characterful homes, cutting deeper into original fabric is rarely appealing and often impractical.

Traditionally, shallow back boxes have meant compromise. Homeowners and specifiers are frequently pushed toward raised plate switches, even when a more refined aesthetic would better suit the space. Digging out walls to deepen back boxes is technically possible, but it can be disruptive, costly and at odds with the careful restoration of period interiors.

SCULPTURAL CEILING LIGHTING: REDEFINING LIGHT, FORM, AND SPACE

Northern Lights unveils its 2026 Ceiling Collection - a series of sculptural lighting designs where light, material, and form converge to redefine luxury interiors. Precision-designed and handcrafted in Derbyshire, each piece balances technical mastery with authentic British craftsmanship, offering designers a palette of materials, textures, and configurations to realise one-of-a-kind compositions.

Purposeful irregularity guides many of the collection’s forms. Asymmetry inspired by natural crystals, cut gemstones, and flowing organic shapes imbues pieces with a living, dynamic presence, while other designs explore architectural clarity, geometry, and compositional precision. Together, ten new ceiling designs create a language of sculptural identity, capable of shaping atmosphere, defining space, and anchoring interiors with vertical drama.

At the heart of the collection is a commitment to experimentation with materiality. Traditional glass techniques, including hand-slumping, kilnfusing, and meticulous layering of hand-cut panels, sit alongside custom moulding and precision metalwork. Natural alabaster, brass, and intricate metalwork provide a rich material palette, optimised to interact with light, accentuate texture, and reveal subtle variations in colour, translucency, and form.

Veil casts a delicate cascade of hand-formed glass leaves, each precision-cut, slumped, and partially frosted to create layered depth. Light projected from the integrated ceiling plate interacts with the leaves, producing a soft, shimmering glow.

Jewel is inspired by cut gemstones, using multifaceted, coloured glass anchored by solid brass, to capture and reflect light across its surfaces.

Link, available as both linear pendant and chandelier, showcases interlinked metal rings,

merging architectural scale with refined technical sophistication.

Ember celebrates traditional kiln-fused glass techniques, layering coloured pieces and fusing to form unique panels, in a subtle nod to Northern Lights’ roots in glasswork.

Solace combines sculpted alabaster with an ambertinted glass tube, creating two distinct layers of balanced illumination, while brass framing and subtle veining in the stone add texture and refinement.

“At the heart of this launch is a focus on material behaviour and design experimentation,” explains Michael Jackson, Head of Design. “Each piece emerged from hands-on exploration of light and material interaction. We pushed glass, alabaster, and metal to reveal their full potential, shaping forms that create visually rich narratives and distinct spatial identities.”

Customisation is integral, not an afterthought. Scale, proportions, materials, tiers, drops, and finishes can all be adapted, enabling designers to craft unique lighting solutions that respond to the architecture and interior concept. The collection moves beyond decorative lighting into spatial definition, shaping layered, tactile atmospheres that captivate the eye and heighten the drama of every space it inhabits.

CUPACLAD ® 101 LOGIC PROVIDES AN ECO-FRIENDLY SOLUTION FOR THREE PROPERTIES IN HERTFORDSHIRE

CUPACLAD® 101 Logic has been specified for the upper façade of three newly built houses located within the Metropolitan Green Belt of the Broxbourne District in Hertfordshire.

Installed by Roof Brothers, and carefully chosen to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, the slate provides a timeless finish, whilst remaining compliant with the client’s sustainability requirements.

Squared Architects designed three properties at Rosebury Farm in total: the first to become the client’s own home, along with two others on the neighbouring land for the client to eventually sell. Whilst sharing the same architectural style and material palette, the properties were designed to have some visible distinctions. Each building offers visual interest, with stepped facades helping to mitigate and soften their overall structures.

“From the outset, we wanted the project to be

characterised by modern, minimal geometries, while employing traditional materials, rather than synthetic façade cladding,” commented Simone Demurtas, Director of Squared Architects. “As such, we specified natural slate to ensure the building’s design reflected the local heritage and fostered a harmonious connection with the landscape. This was our first project using CUPACLAD®, and we found it to be significantly better than the other options available, as it offers a beautiful, almost metallic finish that creates a stunning effect in the daylight.”

To align with the architect’s sustainability ambitions to use materials with low environmental impact as well as the necessary aesthetic requirements, CUPACLAD® 101 Logic was recommended by the

project’s developer, Roof Brothers. The product was then installed on the upper half of the building façade on each of the new build homes constructed at Rosebury Farm.

Victor Wakefield, Company Director at Roof Brothers commented: “We have used the system numerous times before this project, so for us it was the obvious choice. The installation process is straightforward and well thought through. The horizontal CUPACLAD® profiles fix directly onto the timber subframe, which allows you to build up the façade quickly and accurately. The pre-holed slates and dedicated CUPACLAD® 101 screws make positioning and fixing clean and consistent, saving time on site.

On this project, we had large window openings to work around, but the system is flexible enough to accommodate that without issue. The slates can be trimmed precisely where needed, and details such as powder coated aluminium window flashings and lead junctions integrate neatly with the façade.”

CUPACLAD® is a fully BBA approved, Class A1 noncombustible, back ventilated and drained façade system that provides architects and specifiers with a myriad of design options, from traditional to

The fire-resistant qualities of the Magply boards saved the day. We had utilised Magply as a render-backer on a number of projects before being awarded the contract to apply K-Rend to the half dozen homes here and have always been very pleased with the performance. It is an easy board to cut and fix, while we can now definitely confirm to clients that it fully complies with the fire requirements for domestic and commercial buildings.
