Physician Follows in Father’s Footsteps By Rebecca Carpenter, McCarty & Associates “a marketing firm”
He was going to be an engineer.
“My dad is a doc and I didn’t want to do what he did,” explained Alford Vassall, Jr., M.D., chuckling at the irony. He completed his undergraduate degree in engineering in Canada, only to discover he really did want to be a doctor, after all. Though he liked the math and physics of engineering, that field just wasn’t rewarding enough for him. “I need to have people around,” he realized. So he enrolled in Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He is originally from Jamaica. Now Dr. Vassall has been working as a boardcertified obstetrician and gynecologist at Mountain View Women’s Health Clinic in Shelton since July of 2009. “I like taking care of pregnant women. I like being around babies,” he said. Dr. Vassall also enjoys sharing in the whole delivery process. He also appreciates working at the women’s clinic, especially because of its high quality office staff, out-patient services, and follow-up care available. He works with colleagues, Dr. Lystra Wilson-Celestine and Dr. Nkem Nwosa. “I think that we offer a sophisticated level of prenatal care, what I would call, medium risk,” he said. Recently, the clinic extended its office hours until 7 p.m. for two days a week. A father himself, Dr. Vassall has two sons, one of whom wants to attend medical school, too.

Digital Mammo Funding Completed

ason General Hospital Foundation (MGHF) completed its funding of the new Digital Mammography equipment by meeting a goal of $475,000 in 2010. Facility Master Update
The Hospital District is continuing to move forward with the facility master plan improvements. I want to thank the physicians and staff for taking the time needed to continually give input as we keep working with those departments upon which the construction project will have the most impact. As we work on the plans for the emergency department and surgery we will conduct site visits with other hospitals to ensure that we are abreast of future trends and changes. Our goal is to make important changes throughout our facility that will address present and future organizational and patient needs while allowing the District to plan for future utilization and changes in healthcare. The District has hired an owner’s representative construction manager who will be our link and intermediary between the hospital and contractors. We will also work with consultants who will assist the District with financing for this project. Why is this happening now? There are four factors that have contributed to making this the appropriate time to begin this construction project: • Construction costs are low. • Borrowing rates are favorable. • A steady financial position allows us to borrow money and make it possible for us to fund a part of the construction costs. • We have been spending money annually to make improvements to our facility. This annual allocation will enable us to leverage dollars and fund a much larger project. Why are improvements needed in patient rooms and public areas? Part of the need arises from the fact that the hospital is now 50 years old and has not had a major upgrade since 1968. But other reasons are important, too. Hospital services have changed dramatically in the past quarter of a century. More of our patients arrive for outpatient procedures or short stays. Often, family members accompany patients and wait while procedures are being done. These changes require different kinds of patient and waiting rooms.

It’s difficult to exercise when you’re feeling pain and stiffness in your knees or hips. Doctors often recommend weight loss plus lower impact activities such as swimming and cycling. For walking, shoes with a padded heel can lower the impact by 50 percent, according to one study. A knee brace may also help, taking pressure off the joint. For sore knees, exercises that strengthen the quadriceps muscles in the front of the thigh are important. These include forward and side lunges, with or without weights, and certain types of squats.

Obesity Now Greatest Health Risk As the number of smokers declines, obesity has now emerged as an equal health risk. In a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine [February 2010], researchers concluded that QualityAdjusted Life Years (QALYs) lost because of obesity, “is now equal to, if not greater than, those lost due to smoking.” The calculations were based on data from the 1993-2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. During this period, the proportion of smokers in the United States declined 18.5 percent while the proportion of obese persons increased 8.5 percent. While smoking was more likely to result in death; obesity had a greater impact on illness, including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Biggest Loser Competition Winners

ecky Penoyar (second place), Nancy Samples and Tish Jordan (tied for first place), and Alicia Beach (third place) hold their prizes for placing in the top three for Mason General Hospital’s Biggest Loser Competition that was held from October to January. Of the 54 contestants who completed the 12-week challenge, both first-place winners earned a Nintendo Wii game player for losing 13.3 percent of their body weight. Second and third place finishers won Nintendo Wii Fit video games. Participants included employees from 21 hospital departments, a physician, and the staff at Shelton Family Medicine. They lost a total of 415.3 pounds.

Unvaccinated Children Face Risk Chickenpox shots offer protection from a disease that sent 10,000 children to the hospital each year before a vaccine was introduced in 1995. A study of 87,000 members of the Kaiser Permanente health plan found 133 confirmed cases of chickenpox in 2009. Among this group, children who had not been vaccinated were nine times more likely to contract the disease. A previous study found that children not given the vaccine for pertussis (whooping cough) were 23 times more likely than other children to get the disease. Does Running Cause Arthritis? If you’re a runner who has been repeatedly warned (usually by sedentary friends) that running will lead to arthritis, tell them that you know better. The Framingham Offspring Cohort study, following 1,279 subjects for 12 years, found that those who worked out – running, jogging, walking, cycling – had the same risk of osteoarthritis of the knee as those who didn’t work out. Another study, comparing 284 dedicated long distance runners with 156 non-runners found that runners not only had a 39 percent lower mortality rate but had less muscle and joint disability than the non-runners. Yet another study found that former varsity runners were no more likely to develop arthritis in their legs than swimmers or non-athletes. (far right), MGH house supervisor, while he served a second tour of duty with the Washington National Guard in Iraq. In addition, Steve wrote in his nomination of Melissa, “Ms. Clark, along with several other key employees of MGH, (center l-r) Claudia Hawley, Kelly Micas and Trina Gustafson (not pictured), did an outstanding job of keeping in touch with me while I was in Iraq, and for putting out news about me as I served. y now you have heard that the 2010 Census is here! It is not too late to get your census form returned in the mail. If you receive residential postal service, your census should have arrived in the mail. If you receive postal service through the post office box system, you need to pick up a census form at any one of a number of “Be Counted” sites. The Mason County website has an updated listing of the “Be Counted” sites (www.mason.wa.us) throughout the county. Why is the Census important? First, congressional representation is based upon census data. IT is how we ensure our voices are heard in Washington D.C. Second, funds for more than 140 federal programs are based upon census data. Many of our healthcare programs rely on these federal dollars. They include medical assistance and the children’s state health insurance program. Most of our healthcare and

he Heart Healthy Club, a support group for patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), was recently presented with a check for $1,000 by the Mason General Hospital Foundation. The donation will be used to purchase weight scales and pill boxes for CHF patients who are not able to purchase their own. Monitoring one’s weight while having CHF is important to self-management of this chronic condition. Employee Focus: Live, Learn, Work at MGH Joyce Anaya, certified surgery technician, surgery dept. Joyce Anaya has been at MGH for the past five years. She has been a certified surgery technician for 12 years – working in the big cities of Seattle and Kirkland. However, she perfected her skills as a trauma surgery technician in New Mexico. “I assisted in many trauma surgeries that required a lot of stamina and knowledge,” said Joyce. She has spent a lot of time working in Joyce Anaya, Surgery big hospitals, but puts MGH at the top of the list as one of the best places to work. “We have such a great facility and team in our operating room,” she added. “We all work so well together; we are like family.”

Los niños que no están vacunados corren riesgo Las vacunas de la varicela ofrecen protección contra una enfermedad que ha enviado al hospital a 10,000 niños cada año, antes que la vacuna de la varicela fuera introducida en 1995. Un estudio en 87,000 miembros del plan de salud de Kaiser Permanente encontró 133 casos confirmados de varicela en 2009.
