O
ver the past year, Mason Health has remained committed to offering patients the best possible care in alignment with our mission of United Community, Empowered People, Exceptional Health. In addition to the District’s efforts to provide exceptional health care amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, the opening of Mason Clinic has given patients a more seamless, integrated health care experience.

“Mason Clinic has offered my patients larger exam rooms and more convenient access to the Laboratory and Diagnostic Imaging,” said Amie Mower, DO. “My patients have also commented on how beautiful the new building is. I am very grateful for the investment Mason Health made in continuing to provide the best care to our patients by opening Mason Clinic.” Providers have also shared that they love the proximity of their workspaces to the patient rooms and the enhanced collaboration they now have with one another.
“The process of checking in, having the patient be seen, rescheduled for a next visit and having access to the lab is very fluid,” said Jenny Johnston, ARNP. “The building is set Jenny Johnston, ARNP up in a way that allows for collaboration and teamwork amongst fellow staff.” Mason Health also prioritizes the integration of behavioral health providers into primary care. Behavioral Health provider Amber Carlson, LICSW, has been at Mason Clinic since the clinic’s grand opening in February 2020. “Transitioning to Mason Clinic has been amazing,” Carlson said. “My office space is larger and much more comfortable for my Amber Carlson, LICSW patients. I love having the local Mason County areas highlighted throughout the building. It reminds me of why I am so lucky to live in Mason County.” In June of this year, Amber Carlson accepted the role of the Director of Behavioral Health Services at Mason Health.

Mason Health welcomes two new specialty providers C
ontinuing Mason Health’s Vision of Providing the Best PatientCentered Care in the Pacific Northwest, this summer, Mason Health welcomed two new specialty providers to our health care teams. Danielle Blood, MD, joins Mason Health’s Women’s Health service line, and Robert Cavaliere, DPM, will offer Podiatry services at Mason Clinic. They both started in July. Dr. Blood joins Mason Health as more families choose Mason General Hospital’s Birth Center to deliver their children, with a record number of 344 babies born in 2020. Dr. Blood Danielle Blood, MD will practice obstetrics and gynecology at Mt. View Women’s Health, with hospital privileges at Mason General Hospital. She joins Andrea Martin, MD, and Carey Martens, DO, as well as Carley Jacobs, PA-C, in providing Women’s Health’s Services to the community. Dr. Blood brings with her a 20-year career in medicine, first in the nursing field. She grew up in Vancouver, Wash., and from an early age knew that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. In high school, she participated in a program that allowed her to take community college courses, so she obtained an associate degree in nursing shortly after high school. “It’s hard to know you want to be a doctor when you’re 19,” she said. “Once I became a nurse, it was always my intent to go back to medical school when I felt more mature. That was put on pause. I had four children. I did go back to school and in the long run, this path benefitted me.”

Dr. Blood attained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Phoenix in 2009. She worked in the Valley Hospital system in Arizona and also as a registered nurse for Providence Medical Center in Portland, Ore., in the cardiac unit. Most recently, she worked for the Legacy Oregon Burn Center. “I’ve worked in ER and burn units, but I didn’t want that forever,” she said. “I never worked in Labor & Delivery, but I have always had an interest in women’s health, especially after my own experiences. In women’s health, you can really follow a woman from beginning to end.” Dr. Blood’s husband, Kevin, worked in banking, but after the market crashed in 2009, the family pivoted and focused on Dr. Blood’s career. She took pre-requisite courses and then in 2013 started medical school. “It took a long time,” she said. “I was a working mom. It wasn’t easy. It’s not the easy way to do it, but you can do it.” Dr. Blood attended St. George’s University – School of Medicine in Grenada, which was quite an adventure for her family. “We sold everything we owned in Vancouver and every kid got a duffle bag,” she said. “We lived in the Caribbean for two years. It was nervewracking at first.” Her children went from wearing swimsuits every day at the beach to living the city life when they moved to Brooklyn, New York City, for Dr. Blood’s clinical rotations in medical school. “This whole experience has been amazing for my kids,” she said. “They’re always up for an adventure. That’s the gift I’ve given them.”
“I’m not a big city girl,” she said. “I love the Northwest and my family is here, including a close cousin in Olympia. I wanted to live in a community that I feel like I am benefitting and giving it something that it needs. I want to live in a community and be a part of it.”
Dr. Cavaliere grew up in Long Island, New York, and started off as a math major at Farmingdale State College in New York.

Math, however, was not his passion. His father had always encouraged him to work with his hands, whether that be repairing things around the house, raking leaves or doing other yardwork.
“I knew I didn’t want to crunch numbers behind a desk all day,” he said. “It wasn’t something I could see myself doing for the rest of my life. I have an uncle, Raymond Cavaliere, who was a podiatrist, so I shadowed him at his practice in Manhattan. The stars aligned.” In 2014, Dr. Cavaliere began podiatry school at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. After four years, he began his three-year residency at Highlands/Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, where he met fellow resident Dr. Woods. Dr. Woods finished his residency in 2019 and joined Mason Health’s team later that summer. In residency, Dr. Cavaliere saw a high surgical volume in a diverse array of cases, from toenail procedures to total ankle arthroscopy. He was also expected to review 10 to 12 articles weekly, attend X-Ray conferences monthly and give lectures to 10 to 100 people each month. Many of his cases revolved around trauma, such as ankle fractures, but many came from long-standing deformities, such as a clubfoot that doesn’t present issues until 30 years after birth. “Many of our patients came to us with pain,” Dr. Cavaliere reflected. “It doesn’t really matter what the case is, whether large or small, as long as the patient comes out without pain, it’s rewarding. We focused on reconstructive surgery and deformity corrections.” Dr. Cavaliere has authored several papers, as well as a chapter in a textbook on regenerative medicine for plantar fasciitis. When it came time to look for work after residency, he and his wife, Rachel, knew they wanted to move to Washington. Reaching out to Dr. Woods, Dr. Cavaliere had no idea that there would be an open position at Mason Health.
The family then moved to Buffalo, New York, where Dr. Blood completed her residency in OB/GYN. Now, she’s excited to put down roots back in Washington.
“I got really lucky,” he said. “We’re very excited. For a month during my fourth year at Temple, I had an externship at a Franciscan hospital in Federal Way, Washington, for two months.”
As an “older” doctor with experience having four children, Dr. Blood said she hopes patients will find her relatable.
Dr. Cavaliere’s best friend from childhood also works as an ophthalmologist in Tacoma, so he was even more excited about moving to the area.
“I have had the epidural birth, I have had the birth without medication,” she said. “I’ve been where the mom is in the bed. I know what it’s like. It also is a benefit that I was a nurse for so long.” Mason Health appealed to Dr. Blood because of how closely the clinics work within the system and Mason General Hospital. “I really like the model that Mason Health employs, with Mason Clinic being right there with a lot of varied specialties,” she said. “Everyone I met has been very warm and inviting. Dr. Martin and Dr. Martens have a lot of great experience, so I know they’ll be great resources.”

When she’s not working or studying, Dr. Blood is an avid reader and loves to do anything outdoors with her family, such as kayaking and hiking. She has three sons (17, 14 and 11) and one daughter (9).

Terri Grosshans, PA-C, sees patients at Mason Clinic twice a month on the first Wednesday of the month 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and third Wednesday of the month 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. She holds a Master of Clinical Health Services from the University of Washington MEDEX program and a Bachelor of Science in Health Science from Kaplan University.
She has extensive experience in orthopedics in surgical and non-surgical settings. She works directly with Ryan Halpin, MD, providing follow-up care to his patients after they have surgery.

Joining Anderegg at Mason Clinic are Terri Grosshans, PA-C, and Richard Lamour, MD. Richard Lamour, MD, sees patients at Mason Clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of the month. Dr. Lamour is a dual fellowshiptrained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive and non-surgical treatment of sports-related injuries of the knee, foot and ankle. Dr. Lamour obtained his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Miami. “My years of medical training have provided me a deep understanding of the wide range of foot and ankle injuries and conditions and their treatments,” he said. “I take pride in seeing my patients return to the activities they love at the level of function they strive for.”

Bradley Christ, MD, is a fellowship-trained sports medicine surgeon who specializes in treating injuries of the ankle, hip, knee and shoulder, as well as joint replacement. He also has a background in bioengineering and graduated with his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of University of Southern California. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at UC San Francisco – Fresno.
“For each of my patients, I will ensure that all conservative treatment methods are exhausted before recommending surgery,” he said. “I love getting to know my patients and enjoy working with them to help get them back to an active lifestyle.” Ryan Halpin, MD, is an Olympia native and a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon who specializes in treatment of the back, neck, spine and neurological injuries and conditions.

Mason Health launches Domain Northwest – The First of Its Kind for Cerner and the Health Care Sector M
ason Health’s new Cerner Community Works domain, Domain Northwest, launched in June, paving the way for an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system that staff can more easily tailor to their needs and the needs of patients. This domain is owned and governed by Mason Health, in collaboration with other health care organizations who will join the domain. It is the first of its kind for Cerner and represents a move to localize control of EMRs. “With the new solution provided by Cerner, Mason Health will share the Domain Northwest with 11 other ‘like-minded’ hospitals, of the same size and infrastructure,” said Chief Medical Officer Dean Gushee, MD. “This gives us an advantage of managing health care information more efficiently.” Domain Northwest will be managed by local IT specialists but will also have access to national and international IT support systems. “The less providers have to worry about the electronic medical record, the more time they can devote to providing a better service and care to our Mason Health patients,” Gushee said. The upgrade to the electronic medical record system started on Monday, June 28, 2021. Please note, Mason Health’s clinics and services are operating, however, you may experience delays and longer wait times. You will be asked to provide information that has been collected in the past as we are converting to the new system. The provision of service may take a bit longer as we launch the system upgrade. cuidado orientado a pacientes en el Noroeste del Pacífico, este verano, Mason Health dio la bienvenida a dos nuevos proveedores de especialidades a nuestros equipos de cuidados de salud. Danielle Blood, Doctora Especialista, se une a la línea de servicios de salud para la mujer de Mason Health, mientras que Robert Cavaliere, Doctor en Medicina Podiátrica, ofrecerá servicios de podiatría en Mason Clinic. Ambos comenzaron en julio. La Dra. Blood llega a Mason Health en un momento en el cual más familias optan por tener a sus hijos en el Centro de Parto de Mason General Hospital, con un número record de 344 bebés nacidos en 2020. La Dra. Blood ejercerá la obstetricia y ginecología en Mt. View Women’s Health, con privilegios hospitalarios en Mason General Hospital. Se Danielle Blood, MD une a Andrea Martin, Doctora Especialista, y a Carey Martens, Doctor en Osteopatía, así como también a Carley Jobs, Auxiliar Médico quien presta servicios de salud para la mujer en la comunidad. La Dra. Blood aporta con una carrera de 20 años en medicina, inicialmente en el campo de la enfermería. Creció en Vancouver, Washington, y desde una temprana edad supo que quería seguir la carrera de medicina. En la secundaria, ella participó en un programa que le permitía tomar cursos de institutos superiores, de modo que obtuvo un título universitario en enfermería muy poco después de la secundaria. “Es difícil saber que quieres ser doctor cuando tienes 19 años”, dijo ella. “Una vez que me convertí en enfermera, siempre fue mi intención volver a la escuela de medicina una vez que fuese más madura. Esto quedó en pausa. Tuve cuatro hijos. Regresé a la escuela y en el largo plazo, tomar este camino me benefició.” La Dra. Blood obtuvo su licenciatura en enfermería de la Universidad de Phoenix en 2009. Trabajó en el sistema del Valley Hospital en Arizona y fue además enfermera certificada para el Providence Medical Center en Portland, Oregon, en la unidad de cardiología. Recientemente, trabajó para el Legacy Oregon Burn Center. “He trabajado en la sala de emergencias y unidades de quemaduras, pero no quise eso de manera permanente,” dijo ella. “Nunca trabajé en parto y nacimientos, pero siempre tuve un interés en la salud de la mujer, especialmente después de mis propias experiencias. En la salud de la mujer, uno realmente puede seguir a una mujer de principio a fin.”
“Vendimos todo lo que teníamos en Vancouver y cada uno de mis hijos tenía un bolso de mano,” dijo. “Vivimos en el Caribe por dos años. Nos ponía los nervios de punta al principio.” Sus hijos pasaron de pasar todo el día con traje de baño en la playa a vivir la vida de la ciudad cuando se mudaron a Brooklyn, New York City, para la rotación clínica de la Dra. Blood en la escuela de medicina. “Toda esa experiencia ha sido increíble para mis hijos,” afirmó ella. “Siempre están listos para una aventura. Es el regalo que les he dado.”
Posteriormente la familia se mudó a Buffalo, New York, en donde la Dra. Blood culminó su residencia en obstetricia y ginecología. Ahora está muy emocionada de echar raíces en Washington nuevamente.
“No soy una chica citadina,” dijo ella. “Me encanta el Noroeste y mi familia está aquí, incluyendo un primo cercano en Olympia. Quería vivir en una comunidad en la cual sintiera que estaba beneficiando y dando algo que se necesita. Quiero vivir en una comunidad y ser parte de la misma.” Siendo una doctora “de más edad” con experiencia y con cuatro hijos, la Dra. Blood espera que sus pacientes la encuentren divertida. “He tenido un parto con epidural, y he tenido un parto sin medicación,” dijo ella. “He estado ahí donde las madres guardan reposo. Sé lo que es. También es un beneficio que haya sido enfermera durante tanto tiempo.” Mason Health apeló a la Dra. Blood debido a lo cerca que trabajan las clínicas dentro del sistema y Mason General Hospital. “Realmente me gusta el modelo que utiliza Mason Health, teniendo a la mano a Mason Clinic con tantas especialidades variadas,” afirmó. “Todos a quienes conocí han sido muy cálidos y acogedores. Tengo un tío, Raymond Cavaliere, que es podiatra, por lo que seguí su práctica en Manhattan. Los planetas parecían alinearse.”

En 2014, el Dr. Cavaliere comenzó la escuela de podiatría en Temple University, Facultad de Medicina Podiátrica en Philadelphia. Después de cuatro años, comenzó su residencia de tres años en el Centro Médico Highlands/Presbyterian St. Luke en Denver, Colorado, en donde conoció a su compañero residente el Dr. Woods. Woods terminó su residencia en 2019 y se unió al equipo de Mason Health en ese verano. En la residencia, el Dr. Cavaliere observó un alto volumen quirúrgico en una amplia gama de casos, desde procedimientos en la uña del pie hasta una artroscopia del tobillo. Se esperaba además que revisara de 10 a 12 artículos semanalmente, asistiera a conferencias mensuales de rayos X y diera lecturas a grupos de 10 hasta 100 personas cada mes. Muchos de sus casos se generaron en torno a traumas, como por ejemplo fracturas del tobillo, pero muchos vinieron por deformidades de hace mucho tiempo, como por ejemplo un pie zambo que no presenta problemas hasta 30 años después del nacimiento. “Muchos de nuestros pacientes acudieron a nosotros por dolores,” reflexionó el Dr. Cavaliere. “Realmente no importa de qué caso se trate, ya sea simple o complejo, siempre y cuando el paciente salga sin dolor, es realmente una gratificación. Nos enfocamos en cirugía reconstructiva y correcciones de deformidades.” El Dr. Cavaliere ha sido autor de varios documentos, así como también de un capítulo en un texto sobre medicina regenerativa para fascitis plantar. Cuando llegó el momento de buscar trabajo después de la residencia, el Dr. Cavaliere y su esposa Rachel, sabían que querían mudarse a Washington. Al ponerse en contacto con el Dr. Woods, el Dr. Cavaliere no tenía idea de que habría un puesto disponible en Mason Health. “Realmente tuve suerte,” dijo. “Estamos muy entusiasmados. Durante mi cuarto año en Temple, tuve una pasantía externa por un mes en un hospital franciscano en Federal Way, Washington, por dos meses.”
