In response to rapid urbanisation in Kochi, eight key urban strategies were developed to address issues such as suburbanisation, increased vehicular traffic, mental and lifestyle illnesses, ecological degradation, climate change and flooding, food security, and social inequalities.
Kochi’s population growth has led to urban expansion into floodplains and greenfields, resulting in various social, mobility, ecological, and economic challenges. Rather than reacting to these problems, the studio envisioned a liveable and sustainable Kochi.
These urban strategies aimed to tackle local issues with a global perspective, employing systems thinking and scientific modelling to understand the complex relationships between the city’s physical form and its social, environmental, economic, and institutional subsystems.
