Reggiana Riduttori has enhanced its offering with a new W Series catalog of planetary winch drives that will help the company provide more and better solutions for various industries. The new series increases the range of sizes and gear ratios, provides better delivery rates and ensures high-quality performance and durability, regardless of the application.
In early 2021, Reggiana introduced its W Series catalog for the mining, marine and construction sectors. The synergy between compact planetary technology and high lifting performance is the main feature of this new series. The expanded range of sizes bring the planetary winch up to 12 and improves the gear ratios, increasing the flexibility of Reggiana’s products.
While the new smart-design concept is based on the major markets and internal optimization logistics, the components themselves are standardized so assembly times are reduced to the benefit of delivery and after-sales service. Furthermore, the W Series has been designed to be competitive and capable of meeting the highest quality standards. DNV, ABS and ATEX certification can be requested for the whole range.
The winning features of the W Series are compactness and modularity, as well as the special composition and treatment of the oil seals that provide greater protection against external agents, ensuring easy maintenance. Planetary winch drives offer a wide range of applications, from small truck-mounted cranes to large ship winches with hydraulic or electric motors, offering the same quality of performance and durability.
Reggiana is among the market leaders for planetary winch drives, thanks to its investments in research and development, technical product knowledge and experience in specific sectors that allow it to meet specific customer needs. To deliver the best possible response, Reggiana listens to its clients to understand their concerns and their vision of the project.
For Reggiana, personal relationships, experience, and communication are as important as product quality. “We have to think globally but act locally. We must be close to the customer, understand their needs and determine what improvements can be made, find optimal package solutions for the customer’s products and be cost-effective. Knowledge is crucial in that equation,” said Peter Kristensen, International Sales Director.
For almost 50 years, Reggiana Riduttori has been producing planetary and wheel gears that are made entirely in Italy for a wide range of applications in different industries, such as mining, agriculture, marine and mobility. The company was founded in 1965 and thanks to its business plan and high-quality products, it has become a global company with a presence on four continents.

With an ever-growing focus on productivity, the sugar industry is transitioning to high-efficiency pinion-less planetary drives to achieve efficient milling amid increased competition. The solution reduces energy consumption, maintenance costs, stress on mill components and extends component life.
Significantly, the change represents a shift away from conventional steam turbines with open gears to foot-mounted planetary gears. A key actor in this transition has been Reggiana Riduttori. The company specializes in the design and construction of planetary gearboxes for industrial machinery applications and played an important role in developing shaft-mounted planetary drives that reduce energy consumption during extraction and improve milling performance at crushing, extraction and maintenance rates.
Sugar cane milling plays a fundamental step in the production of sugar. It is the process that consumes the greatest amount of energy. Over the years, there have been innovations like footmounted technology that have improved flexibility and reduced power consumption. However, it still represented a great loss of power due to the crown pinion, coupling and stress on the headstock.
Sugar cane milling plays a fundamental step in the production of sugar. It is the process that consumes the greatest amount of energy. Over the years, there have been innovations like foot-mounted technology that have improved flexibility and reduced power consumption.
Foot-mounted mill gearboxes are attached to the mill via a rope coupling or a tail rod. The rope coupling allows better flexibility in the event of misalignment and they are better transmitters than tail bars. This has drastically reduced energy consumption, in addition to reducing maintenance operations. However, the crown pinion transmission is less efficient and generates a significant stress impact on the headstocks. In foot-mounted single-gear systems, a gearbox takes all the load and inertia, causing slower performance and high inertia that increases the stress on the gears. In addition, there are limitations on the size of motors and gearboxes, making it difficult to find them and their spare parts.
Reggiana Riduttori saw this problem as an opportunity to develop more efficient, easy-to-maintain and low-cost milling solutions. In the cement industry, shaft-mounted gearbox technology has been used for 20-25 years with positive results.
The company decided to introduce the same idea in the sugar industry, especially the shaft-mounted technology for cane milling. What makes the Reggiana Riduttori offering unique and functional is that it requires no foundation, pinions or couplings.

Q: As Reggiana Riduttori works to broaden its footprint in the Mexican sugar market, what differentiates the company?
A: What we have been doing and will continue to do is propose placing the sugar mill’s transmission drive system directly on the mill, which results in 50 percent energy savings. Another factor is that our system offers differentials in terms of speed because we put one drive on each roller. This generates more liquid from the sugar cane, producing more sugar. The waste from the cane can be dryer and burning in the boiler is more efficient. The end result is that we provide a great deal more energy savings and increased production.
Our global experience is also among our most valuable differentiators. This includes all the installations we have done worldwide. Our sales totals are 10 times greater than all of our competitors. The new technology we offer is bolstered by an expert team. We have more references than our competitors and we guarantee our clients will have a team that will be able to solve any difficulty they face.
Q: What opportunities do you see in Mexico in terms of the sugar business?
A: We have not been in Mexico as long as we have been in other regions, such as South America and Asia. However, in Mexico specifically, along with our sister company Transtecno Mexico, we are building up our sales and finding opportunities to improve our business.
Our goal is to enter one of the five main sugar groups to create relationships and to cooperate on technology. If we succeed with one group, it will be easier to develop business relationships with the other four groups. It is a gradual process. We already have some groups in mind, but we need to continue growing our business before choosing one specifically.
Q: What has been the greatest challenge you have faced regarding your business ambitions in Mexico?
A: The most significant challenge has been finding the right people within the sector. Another is the resistance to change, specifically, when it comes to technology, that is prevalent in Mexico. People in the industry do not want to adopt new technologies because they are already used to the technology they have, even though others could provide greater benefits to their operations. Also, there is a fear of being the first to try new technology because no one wants to take the risk. To address this, we demonstrate the capacity of our equipment, showing potential clients what we can do for them. We illustrate our solutions with our success cases around the world, in regions such as Asia, Africa and Central America. We are looking for clients who are open to trying this new technology but it has been difficult to break that barrier.
Q: In which part of the sugar processing line do you see the biggest opportunity?
A: The milling section provides 50 percent of the business we are developing. Another 30 percent is in mill preparation and 20 percent is in the processing house. Our main focus is on the mill but we can supply an entire factory with our systems.
