Roots that run deep

In 1991, Peter passed the business to his daughter Victoria and her husband Kyriacos. Under their stewardship, the once-humble corner shop expanded to three times its size and took up the row of retail spaces at 82 Riccarton Rd where it’s located today. Now, after decades of service by their aunt and uncle, it’s time for the next official generational handover. As of this month, Theo’s Fisheries Ltd is under new leadership, with Yotti and Yanni as co-owners itching to lead their own evolution. “We’re the fourth generation,” Yotti says. “We have our own ideas, our own energy – and we’re desperate to put our stamp on the business, just like those before us. “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” Yotti says. “We want to modernise while keeping our core values strong and maintaining the high standards that define us, which is that our responsibility to our customers is paramount.” Their aunt and uncle, Victoria and Kyriacos, aren’t slowing down. They’re busy with the upcoming launch of their newest venture, The Mayor of Ale, opening soon at the old Trevinos restaurant site on the corner of Riccarton Rd and Mona Vale Ave. “They’ve always got things going on – property, hospitality, you name it,” he says.

DON’T JUST LOOK: BOOK!

Theo’s has stood strong through the worst of times – earthquakes, pandemics, and industry shifts. It was the community, however, that made survival possible. “The support from Christchurch was amazing. Generations of loyal customers just kept showing up. That’s what got us through. We’ve had people coming here for 30 years. They say, ‘I used to come here when I was at Boys’ High and fish and chips cost two shillings…’ and it’s lovely, I love it, we all love it. That kind of loyalty is humbling – and it’s our lifeblood,” Yotti says.

Sustainability and the future

While honouring the past, Yotti is also looking to shape a business that can tackle challenges of the future such as sustainability of the fishing industry. “After university, I felt a duty to learn as much as I could about the fishing industry because my family had made a living off fish. I went to work for the Ministry of Fisheries. I was a government observer – yes, a ‘government nark’ – going out on fishing vessels recording everything. It gave me real insight. Thankfully, New Zealand has one of the most protected fisheries on the planet. Our quota management system, whatever faults it may or may not have, is comprehensive. “We’ve got more to lose than anybody from overfishing and climate change. So we buy from local boats and reward sustainable fishing practices by paying better prices. Line-caught and well-handled fish not only last longer, they taste better. So we pay more for that. As well, customers are asking the right questions these days, and we’re more than happy to answer them.” Looking ahead, the brothers’ vision is clear: protect the past, meet the moment, and pave the way for their children. “Each generation has taken this already beautiful thing and evolved it,” says Yotti. “That’s the kind of innovation and energy that Yanni and I are going to bring to the business now that we are officially at the helm – which became official on 3 June – you’re going to know that Yanni and Yotti had Theo’s. “I

feel him here with me every day, so does my brother, Yanni,” says Yotti Ioannou, one half of the latest generation to take the reins at Theo’s Fisheries, one of Christchurch’s most enduring businesses. He’s speaking of his late grandfather Peter, who ran the iconic local business for 40 years. Peter took it over from the original founder, his Uncle Theo, in 1964. Now in its fourth generation, Theo’s Fisheries is a Christchurch institution, with a reputation as rich as its history. This isn’t just a shop – it’s a legacy, shaped by the hard graft of Cypriot immigrant Theo Papageorge who came to New Zealand in 1949 looking for a better life, post WWII, after time in a concentration camp. In 1950, Theo bought a butchery on Riccarton Rd. He switched it from meat to fish and through a deep commitment to quality and customers, lay the foundations of an enduring family business. For Yanni and Yotti, who grew up peeling potatoes, scaling fish “and doing heaps and heaps of cleaning” during school holidays from the age of about 12, the shop is the family’s heritage. “It’s the reason why we have everything that we have today. It’s the reason our family is who we are today. It’s all because of this place here and that is not lost on us,” Yotti says. “Yanni and I grew up in the business. My grandfather Peter, he taught us everything. “It starts with that old-school work ethic, the immigrant attitude. He came to New Zealand from a village in Cyprus with no English to work under his uncle Theo. He took every opportunity and so me and Yanni, we are Kiwis, yes, that’s who we are, but we’ve also got this rich vein of that immigrant attitude and character that we hold on to, which came from my grandfather. We’re willing to die here,” says Yotti. “That’s how passionate we are about the business. That’s how important it is.”

Autonomy over routine

The biggest motivator? None of them wanted to go back to a 9-to-5 once their kids started school. Ideas ranged from importing spas to launching greeting cards. The vision to focus on scarves came from a casual shop visit. “A saleswoman mentioned how hard it was to find really good scarves,” recalls Amie. “That was a defining moment,” Amanda adds. Scarves were the perfect product – lightweight for posting, great for gifting (Amie’s obsession), and ripe for design storytelling. Their first collection launched in October 2019 with five designs and 200 units each; with Merivale’s Treasure Box by Biani as their debut retailer. The first sale? A Cashmere-modal scarf called The Hunter – still a customer favourite. Today, Dark Hampton is stocked in more than 50 stores across New Zealand, including leading department stores. The name Dark Hampton came from a brainstorm of evocative words. Amanda had recently visited the Hamptons, a place that symbolised elegance and aspiration.

What makes Dark Hampton truly unique is the dynamic trio behind it. Amanda, the design perfectionist, ensures every detail meets her exacting standards. Amie and Kate bring a pragmatic, action-focused energy that drives the business forward. “I’m naturally a perfectionist,” Amanda admits. “But Amie and Kate remind me, ‘finished is better than perfect.’ That mantra keeps us moving.” With three decision-makers, disagreements are rare and easily resolved. “There’s always a tie-break, which is handy,” Kate laughs. “More importantly, we trust each other completely.” Their close friendship is the glue holding the brand together.

Meet Amie Bingham, Amanda Barker, and Kate Brown, the trio behind Dark Hampton, the Kiwi company whose scarves are becoming a staple in stylish wardrobes across Aotearoa – and increasingly, Australia. Born from creative curiosity, entrepreneurial drive, and genuine friendship, Dark Hampton is more than a brand. It’s a story of three women who leaned into their individual strengths, trusted each other, and built something elegant and meaningful. “We first connected over kindergarten drop-offs,” Amanda remembers. “We saw each other daily and just started talking.” “Our friendship was easy,” continues Amie. So we did coffees and we had play dates with the children. Then the children got closer to age five and we thought, ‘how do we get to hang out together once our children are at school?’” The trio became running and dog-walking buddies, and soon, business ideas started flowing. “We realised we had complementary skill sets,” says Amie. “I came from sales, Kate had logistics and marketing, and Amanda brought design expertise.”

“We’re a package deal,” Amie says. “Clients don’t just buy scarves – they buy into all three of us.” The women have also carved out a niche in corporate gifting, creating bespoke, co-branded scarves for companies looking for something authentic. “We only partner with brands that align with our values,” Kate says. “It’s about building lasting relationships, not just quick sales.” “We don’t chase influencers or viral trends,” Amanda explains. “We want genuine advocates – people who truly love our scarves.” Instagram helps build community and brand awareness, but sales come from trust and connection, not marketing gimmicks.

Scarves with substance

For Amie, Amanda, and Kate, success is defined by joy and sustainability. “If our scarves make someone happy, that’s a win,” Amanda says. “We want to create pieces that bring colour and meaning to everyday life.” The focus has always been on steady growth. “We believe in 0.001% improvement every day,” Amie says. “Small, consistent steps build something lasting.” The trio also prioritises community involvement, regularly participating in events like the Pink Ribbon Breakfast, reinforcing their commitment to causes close to their hearts. Their advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is straightforward: “Just start. Start before you feel ready. “Waiting for perfection just slows you down.” Amie adds, “Find partners who complement your skills – whether that’s creativity, business, or execution.” And resilience is key. “Every ‘no’ is just a step closer to a ‘yes’.” Looking ahead, Dark Hampton aims to expand into the Australian market while maintaining the lifestyle balance that keeps them grounded. Collaborations with female artists and creative brands will continue to inspire new collections. Mānawatia a Matariki Māori New Year is a time for reﬂecting, reconnecting, and looking to the stars.

s winter deepens in Canterbury, the rising of Matariki, which is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster, marks a significant and spiritual moment in Aotearoa’s calendar. Matariki 2025 is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and set intentions for the future. Following the Māori lunar calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar, Matariki’s dates change every year. In 2025, we celebrate Matariki from 19 to 22 June – the national public holiday falling on 20 June.

A cultural New Year

Matariki, the Māori New Year, or Te Mātahi o te Tau, begins with the midwinter appearance of nine visible stars in the pre-dawn sky, according to leading Māori astronomer Dr Rangi Matamua. Each star holds a certain significance over our wellbeing and environment as seen from the Māori view of the world. They represent an element such as food, weather, and water. This year’s theme, Matariki and Water, acknowledges the importance of wai (water) in our lives, spiritually, physically, and environmentally. It highlights three of the nine Matariki cluster stars: Waitī (freshwater), Waitā (saltwater), and Waipuna-ā-rangi (rain).

Celebrations across the country

From dawn ceremonies and stargazing to storytelling, shared kai, and environmental cleanups, communities are marking Matariki with a renewed sense of connection. It’s also a chance to honour those who have passed, spend time with loved ones, and plan for the year ahead.

How to see Matariki

Rise early and look east to see Matariki. First, find Orion’s Belt (Tautoru), then trace left to a triangle of stars (Te Kokotā). Just beyond that lies Matariki, shimmering with meaning and promise.

old onto your gumboots, Christchurch, everyone’s favourite cheeky little pig is bringing her snorts, snickers, and snuffles to the Isaac Theatre Royal this July. “Peppa Pig’s Fun Day Out is skipping onto the stage in a live theatrical adventure packed with songs, games, giggles and muddy puddles (imaginary ones, don’t worry – no splash zone in the stalls),” marketing and development manager Bianca Lindstrom says. Peppa, George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig are all heading down under for a joyful sing-along escapade, and your little ones are invited to join the fun. The Metropol team were lucky enough to nab an exclusive ‘oink-terview’ and the pink icon had a lot to say. “Oink! I can’t wait to see all my friends in Christchurch, especially the little ones who love jumping up and down in muddy puddles as much as I do! I’m also hoping to try a hokey pokey ice cream… and maybe meet a real sheep,” says Peppa. So what can fans expect from her stage show? “Lots of singing, dancing, and silly fun. We’re going on a big day out – with stops at the zoo, the beach, and even a picnic – but things don’t quite go to plan. Luckily, I have my friends and family to help me… and some very clever children in the audience too,” adds Peppa. Her message to Kiwi kids is simple: “Bring your biggest giggles, your wiggliest dancing feet, and get ready for a snortingly good time. Christchurch might be cooling down, but that’s no reason to hit pause on your daily walk.

The temperature drop often leads to a drop in activity, but staying active is crucial to both physical and mental health in the colder months when daylight is limited. Lack of sun exposure can lead to vitamin D deficiency and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). The NZ Heart Foundation recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity daily. As winter settles over Canterbury, shorter days, limited sunlight, and more time indoors increase the risk of vitamin D deﬁciency.

ften called the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, immune support, and mood regulation. The sun’s UVB rays, needed for vitamin D production, are weaker in winter and often absent altogether. Environmental Health Intelligence NZ estimates one in 20 adults are vitamin D deficient, with higher risk in the South Island. From August to October, deficiency is over three times more common here than in the North Island. Symptoms of deficiency include tiredness, low mood, frequent illness, aches, hair loss, pale skin, poor appetite, and slow healing. Long-term deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, where bones become thin and brittle.

Boost vitamin D: • Get outside daily for 15 to 30 minutes with your face and arms exposed. Sunscreen use won’t block vitamin D production.

• Eat vitamin D-rich foods, though diet alone is usually insufficient. Good sources include oily fish, egg yolks, full-fat milk, and butter.

• Consider supplements, especially in winter. Certified nutritionist John Arts of Abundant Health suggests a combination D3/K2 supplement with 1000 international units (IU) of D3 and 60mcg of K2. K2 helps direct calcium to bones and away from arteries, supporting both bone and heart health. John says that while NZ regulations cap vitamin D supplements at 1000IU, some experts suggest up to 5000IU for winter or specific health needs. However, too much can cause hypercalcaemia, so balance is key. Understand the importance of vitamin D and stay well this winter.

How to take back control when you’re caught in a whirlwind.

s women, most of us at some point find ourselves caught in a whirlwind. I’d like to say ‘swept up in a whirlwind romance’ but this time it’s a different kind of whirlwind. Time is one of our most precious resources, yet it can so easily slip unnoticed through our fingers. It’s consumed by obligations, expectations, and a chorus of ‘yes’ when we often want to say ‘no’. Why? We don’t want to let anyone down, so we leave little space for ourselves. That can make you feel that life has a way of sweeping you up in its whirlwind. We can find ourselves juggling multiple roles, feeling as though we are stretched too thin or literally in the circus performing a balancing act. In the midst of all of this, we can lose sight of our own direction, aspirations, what we truly want and who we really are. I use a simple yet empowering practice to take a step back, reassessing and refocusing. It helps reclaim my energy and sense of self as well as engage my sometimes forgotten personal aspirations. Reclaiming your power is protecting your energy. I know that courage plays a big part in setting boundaries and prioritising what matters. Courage is needed to say ‘no’ - it’s the only way to say goodbye to overcommitting. It isn’t selfish, it’s an act of self-preservation. I urge you to try it in a thoughtful way. Reclaim what sets you on fire. Bring your dreams to the front of the line, they are essential for your personal happiness, growth and destiny. It’s a journey, not a destination. Fisherman’s hash Looking for something a bit special to eat with loved ones for a Matariki brunch? You can’t go wrong with this delicious dish.

eflecting this year’s Matariki theme of celebrating the waters and oceans, this fish dish is also a great weekend lunch or light dinner. A poached egg on top is a nice touch, if you feel like it. The hash mix will easily keep for a day or two in the fridge, if you want to prepare in advance.

INGREDIENTS For the avocado smash

• 2 ripe avocados • 1/ lemon, juiced 2 • Flaky sea salt • Black pepper, freshly ground

For the fish hash

• 300g white fish, diced (any NZ-caught • • • • • • • •

white fish will do – hoki, ling, snapper, gurnard, tarakihi, hoki, or blue cod.) 3 medium potatoes, grated 3 spring onions, finely chopped 50g chorizo, finely chopped 2 Tbsp rice flour Flaky sea salt Black pepper, freshly ground 2 eggs, beaten 3 Tbsp oil

Instructions

1. Open the avocados, remove the stones and scoop out the flesh into a bowl. 2. Mash the avocado to a smooth consistency. Add the lemon juice and season well with salt and pepper. Mix well and set aside.

3. Finely dice the fish into small pieces and place in a large mixing bowl. 4. Grate the potatoes with a cheese grater. Squeeze out all the excess water

from the potatoes once grated (use a clean tea towel to do this if you need to). Add to the fish, along with the chorizo, spring onion, and rice flour. Season with salt and pepper. 5. Add the beaten eggs to the fish mix and fold through, making sure all ingredients are well combined. 6. Place a large heavy-based frying pan on medium-high heat. Add the oil. When the pan has reached temperature, add small handfuls of fish hash mix to the pan. Flatten the cakes in the pan using the back of a spoon or spatula. 7. Fry hash cakes 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown, taking care when turning. The bigger the hash the longer it will take to cook. 8. Remove from the pan when done and place on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Set aside in a warm oven, until needed, if you’re frying in batches. 9. Assemble the hash cakes 2 to 3 cakes per person adding a dollop of avocado smash on top.

ow do you launch a business on a shoestring? Dandelion and Clover founder Jenny Swift credits a small team of supporters for the treasure her West Melton café has become. In just seven months, the café has established itself for the community, by the community – a venue where all are welcome to enjoy classic country hospitality and feel-good food. “Arrive as a guest and leave as a friend,” Jenny says. Her 35 years of combined international experience in hotels and hospitality form the other side of the coin, yet Jenny still says “it’s taken a village”, and only considers herself the owner when it’s time to pay the wages. “Otherwise, I’m just one of the girls,” she says. n judging projects this year, we observed a recurring pattern of strong collaboration between architects and clients, leading to exceptional projects that skilfully addressed challenges like topography, budget, and timeline,” says jury convenor and architect Jorgen Andersen from Arthouse Architects. Joining Jorgen on the jury of the 2025 Canterbury Architecture Awards was Ben Lloyd (Lloyd Hartley), Jessica Glen (Jessica Glen Architects), Nic Owen (Nic Owen Architects) and lay juror Sarah Rowlands. Organised by Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, local awards are held nationwide to celebrate and promote the best architecture of that year. Here we look at some of the stand-out Canterbury homes and buildings from this year’s awards: Three Sixty Architecture’s Merino Jacket (left) cleverly utilises standard construction elements and allows for future adaptability without compromising on the wellbeing of its inhabitants in the short term, reads the judges citation. Clearly articulated spaces have been designed around a young family and showcase the stunning views while still providing small intimate areas for gathering. Thoughtful design flows through from project to project, RHR House by Three Sixty Architecture, nestled within Christchurch’s rugged Southshore Spit and featured on Metropol’s cover, redefines architectural principles, prioritising people, place, and emotion. Design elements consider and mitigate the risks of natural hazards, while the dematerialised aesthetic creates a calming atmosphere and a concrete, steel and timber palette evokes the home’s coastal environment.

Celebrated for its thoughful composition, Redcliffs House, Te Rae Kura by MAP Architects is anchored to its site through the use of excavated volcanic rock. Intentionally concealed on arrival, the view then reveals itself through a central staircase separating living, sleeping, and service areas. The restrained material palette and purposeful planning results in elegant living spaces that lead to seamless indoor outdoor flow – a slice of holidaylike paradise in Redcliffs. Go ahead – browse some of the winners and discover inspiration for your next home or architectural project.

ach generation has seen its fair share of changes, with different power trains and even more technology thrown into the mix. This leads us to the latest M5 G90, an M5 yet not as we know it. For the first time, the M5 has plug-in hybrid capability with an 18.6kWh battery pack and electric motor, accompanying the M5’s hefty 4.4L TwinPower turbo V8 petrol engine. To combine these would create a ludicrous power output – a combined 535kW and staggering 1000Nm of torque. The G90 allows you to travel 67km on electric power alone. Add the battery pack and electric motor and the latest M5 packs on the pounds over the previous generation with a kerb weight of 2500kg. At 5096mm long and 1970mm wide, the M5 G90 is one big car and dead serious at that. The LED Matrix headlights scowl at you while every bulge and carbon covered spoiler and duct flexes like a steroid addict during a workout. It means business and doesn’t care about subtlety. Inside things are even less subtle. Everything from the red M5 embossed heated and ventilated sports leather seats to the M-sport coloured ambient lighting screams performance. You feel cosseted and everything is driver-focused and easy to reach. Find every kind of convenience imaginable for a car that costs close to $250,000, though some of the switchgear does feel slightly second rate. On start up, it defaults to hybrid mode which sees some silent running at suburban pace. Press M Mode 1 and this becomes Dynamic which speeds up the gear changes, increases the bellowing V8 soundtrack and stiffens up the suspension. Press M Mode 2 and you enter Dynamic Plus – everything is dialled up entirely – turning the M5 into a maniacal automotive adrenaline pump. The extra instant torque of the batteries offers savage acceleration with no turbo lag. Keep your foot mashed into the firewall and it doesn’t let up, allowing you to reach 100kph 3.5 seconds later from stationary. An extra 10 seconds of boost can be added by holding down the downshift paddle for the 8-speed M-Steptronic gear box. Despite its girth and weight, the M5 shrinks around you when you start truly moving. With its xDrive AWD system and Adaptive M-Suspension, it’s a point and shoot car of the highest order. Cornering hard with immense grip on offer, devour bendy bits completely flat before charging out with that electrically assisted twinturbo V8 on full song. Dial back the exuberance and the M5 is still as docile a daily driver as you would want it to be. Sporting a considerable price tag, the new BMW M5 is completely mad, nuts, even outrageous – yet somehow still completely wonderful.

This month in the Essence office it’s been all go with our new advertising consultant, Tracy Pope. It was great to see that local Karikaas Dairy have been recognised in the NZ Champions of Cheese Awards for 2025. We caught up with the team at Blackwell’s Department Store in Kaiapoi to find out all about the upcoming winter festival. Here’s what they told us.

Blackwell’s Winter Festival returns on Saturday 12 July 2025, inviting families to revel in the magic of the season. Held in conjunction with The Kaiapoi Art Expo it promises to be a wonderful day. Sculptor Victor Cagayat will once again dazzle audiences with his breathtaking ice sculpting, enchanting all from 2.00 to 4.00 PM in the car park of Blackwell’s Department Store. We are thrilled to welcome back the Serendipity Circus from 3.00 to 7.00 PM, where Freya, Dan, Sam, Tyla, and their talented troupe will mesmerise you with their extraordinary skills. Throughout the afternoon, prepare to be spellbound by roaming stilt walkers, captivating hand balancing acts, aerial duo performances, and a plethora of other delights. For our younger guests, there’s face painting, balloon twisting, and opportunities to try your hand at circus and aerial workshops. As twilight descends, the evening will come alive with captivating LED hula hoop acts, luminous jugglers, and stilt walkers adorned in glowing costumes, culminating in a breathtaking LED light show. A large part of Kaiapoi’s community was once dominated by the town’s wool mill. The Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company started in the late 1800s in what was once the site of a flax mill. The company aimed to produce quality products and sell them around the world. They recruited experienced workers from England, who had skills in spinning and weaving. They also kept up to date with new developments in the industry. At one time the woollen mill was one of the biggest employers in the town, weathering two world wars and the Great Depression. However, as new synthetic fabrics started to appear and cheaper alternatives became available, the business struggled and in the early 1970s was bought by Mosgiel Woollens Ltd. It was the start of the end for the woollen mill. However, one of the many items the mill produced was pure woollen blankets. With cheerful colour checks, plaids and a range of colours and patterns – they were very popular and came in all sorts of sizes and designs. Today vintage woollen blankets from Kaiapoi can still be bought online from individuals and retro/vintage sellers – look out for those with original labels intact. You can also head along to Kaiapoi Museum to see a sample of some of the colourful, quality blankets made back in the day.

Kaiapoi Food Forest Inspires The Kaiapoi Food Forest is now well established on its Cass Street site in Kaiapoi, but it’s also inspiring others. Food forest founder and councillor, Brent Cairns, was approached by a residents group in Pines Beach who were keen to set up a similar forest in their area. They secured some land provided by the TKT trust, jointly owned by the local council and Ngai Tahu. “I designed the Pines Beach food forest after an approach from the residents group who are really active,” says Brent. The Pines Beach site, on land provided by TKT trust (jointly owned by the council and Ngai Tahu) is already being planted. In May, a group of residents got together to plant over 150 trees. Mulch and cardboard have been donated and a local nursery provided many plants and trees. Kaiapoi High School students have also been working on planting out the sand dunes behind the food forest.

The History of the

BNZ BUILDING

The original BNZ in Kaiapoi was built in 1862 – entirely out of timber. In the late 1880’s new plans were drawn up by a Christchurch architect and the two-storey building was reconstructed out of more permanent materials. Back then, it was normal for the bank manager to live on site so the building was designed to house the bank manager as well as the bank. The official entrance to the bank premises was on Charles St whilst round the corner, on Williams St, the entrance was residential in style– for the bank manager to come and go from his home. The building contained the main bank, the manager’s office, a stationary room fitted in under the staircase, and a strong room. As well as the dining room with its bay window on the ground floor, the manager was provided with a kitchen, scullery and pantry downstairs, five bedrooms, a drawing room, and bathroom upstairs. Later, the bank expanded to take up this residential space for business. At the time of its opening, it was the only banking institution in Kaiapoi and one of very few buildings in town made from brick and stone. In 1988 BNZ moved to new premises, and the building was used as offices, a doctor’s surgery and a funeral directors. The earthquakes put a stop to that and the building required some serious restoration work. Luckily a local developer decided to do just that and in 2022, the building was reopened with Paper Plus and the NZ Post agency as downstairs tenants. Upstairs there is luxury accommodation for short and long stay visitors. It is wonderful to see buildings like this preserved. The old BNZ building is a real asset to this riverside town.

CARELESS PEOPLE By Sarah Wynn Williams “We’re in the middle of an archeological ruin somewhere on the Panamanian coast. Author Sarah Wynn Williams, originally from Christchurch, worked as a diplomat before pitching Facebook for a job back in 2009. She was taken on as Manager of Global Public Policy and her starry-eyed optimism soon bumped up against some unpleasant realities. This is a gorgeously ‘gossipy’ book and Sarah writes a good story. Find plenty of self-deprecating humour and an eye for detail – like the mystified reaction of German ministers on seeing the exposed air ducts and graffiti of the Facebook office. To them it looks like a building code violation. Laughs aside this is really about the huge power of Facebook and how that power is used. Not in a good way, it turn outs. According to many news sources, Meta (previously Facebook) won an emergency ruling in the US earlier this year to temporarily stop Sarah from promoting or further distributing copies of her book.
